I've been to the Thirsty a million times now. It is one of those rare places that is able to appeal both to locals as a "hangout" and to tourists passing through. Why? Because the staff are committed to the best possible dining experience, using top-notch ingredients to expertly prepare each menu item and drink, and giving personal attention to every customer. It is just the right balance between fine dining and a comfortable tavern atmosphere. The place is busy but not rowdy, and the recently-added floor space offers lots of breathing room. My wife and I don't dine out often cuz she loves to cook as is really good at it. Hence, we are hard to please. But we stopped in the the Thirsty on our way home after kayaking the Sturgeon River. Another restaurant not as good as advertised. So close but just missing in a few ways. First things first, they were very busy and the bartender was slammed and also waiting tables? I think. She was way too busy to be leaving the full bar, let's put that on management. Service was so slow. By the time I finished a whole beer I had yet to even be asked if I wanted to see a menu, a local noticed my frustration and gave me a menu. I basically had to barge into someone else's order to get the bartenders attention. I ordered the white fish dip and so did the guy next to me at the same time. They came out at the same time but we had different crackers. The gentlemen joked that he got the better crackers and he was right. I had good ole buttered ritz like crackers. Bummed about that. Was difficult ordering dinner as well had to call for attention. I had the Chicken Frangelico and that was pretty good. I'd give the entree 4-stars and the overall experience 3. read more

This is a must visit spot when in or near Wolverine. We stopped by for the Perch Fish Fry on Friday nights (starts at 4:30PM). It was delicious. Fish was paired with asparagus and rice instead of the usual coleslaw and fries. Able to substitute for a small price. The Reuben bites appetizers were delicious. Staff is exceptionally friendly. My experience today was a letdown after so many great meals enjoyed here. There are not a lot of options for a family with picky kids in the area. My son's burger came out overcooked and dried out. By the time it was noticed we were ready to go and he had lost his appetite. It was taken away and I was told that $2.50 would be deducted from the bill, I thought great it was probably only $5-6 for a kids burger and chips. To find out that it was $9.50 so the discount left it at $7 was a joke! I didn't press it as we were all exhausted and ready to hit the road for home, but I got the feeling that they know they are they only game in town and don't have to provide great service to keep a decent level of business. Really great service. Outside seating with Kayla. Reuben balls were a pleasant surprise- filled with corned beef not a bunch of breading. The Thousand Island was excellent. We just had an excellent meal at a very reasonable price! They do now accept credit card payments without any surcharge if that's a worry. The restaurant is tucked back a bit off the road just North of Wolverine, quick and easy off I75. It is a big, open, clean restaurant with friendly and efficient waitstaff. I had the wedge salad and it was a huge portion of crisp, fresh lettuce with ample bacon, tomatoes, onions, blue cheese and dressing. Just what I was craving. My kids ordered off the children's menu and they both could not finish their meals. My daughter's pizza was amazing. I would order this next time as their crust was very good. It was a thick crust but buttery and flaky crisp at the edges. My son had the cheeseburger and it was served on a nice crusty bun not just a cheap sesame roll. His fries were the crisp batter fried type. Very yummy. Finally my husband had the specialty pork sandwich which was unique and flavorful on a bakery style hoagie bun. We were stuffed and carrying out to-go containers for $38 total. Overall, very pleased with the experience and impressed with the creative menu options and the fresh, hand-made cooking. We want to be sure to visit on Saturday next time as I hear the Prime rib is wonderful! read more

I have been here before and had a great experience. But my mother, my daughter and I went here last night and were very disappointed in our visit. My mom ordered a salad and a glass of wine with her burger and never received the wine or salad and had to ask for them to be taken off the bill. My burger was upside down, the sauce was on the bottom and the bacon was under the cheese, it didn't so much affect the taste, it was just unusual. I ordered a kids pepperoni pizza for my daughter and a cheese pizza was brought out. The pizza was on a huge, incredibly hot plate and placed directly in front of my 3 yr old! I had to ask for smaller extra plate in order to cool it down. Not kid friendly in the least. It was a bit busy and we waited for about 15 minutes even though there were plenty of tables open. My daughter is young and was loud for a few minutes as we settled in, I gave her things to color and played with her to get her to calm down. But we got so many angry looks from customers and servers that I became a bit alarmed and immediately gave my child my phone to play with. She quieted down very quickly, but I was still very aware that we might not be 100% welcome. The food was fine, nothing phenomenal like I've had there before. read more

Stopped here 2 years in a row after a golf outing with about 20 guys, and not a complaint from the group. Last year I had a pork tenderloin creation, it was awesome. This year I had the Asian Peanut Shrimp, and was not disappointed. It would hold up well against a similar dish from just about any Thai restaurant I've ever dined at. Is this place very good? Food for the most part was well prepared, had the surf and turf. One of our party only ordered a burger and it was severely undercooked. Wait time to be seated was unacceptable (we had a party of 6). Was told 35 minute wait, ended up being and hour and 10 mins and only then because we suggested they split our party up. Took another 10 mins to get our drinks and 20 more for our food. I stopped in here for the first time on my way back from a shopping trip to Gaylord. My husband and I ordered a pizza and some cheese bread. The atmosphere was nice and my waitress (Brandy) was excellent. She was very fast to wait on our table and checked in regularly without the annoying every five second check in. We passed this place while kayaking on the Sturgeon River and if we hadn't been paddling for our lives we would have stopped right then. Instead, we went back in for dinner after our kayak trip. Wow, what a great place! You would never expect to find a restaurant of this caliber here in tiny Wolverine, MI. This place has much more than bar food. We started with the appetizer of whitefish pate, and this is probably the best I've ever had. Just outstanding. The tater tot appetizer was just okay. Our dinners were very good, the burger was perfectly done as ordered, and they used local Plath's bacon on top. Our server told us they use local ingredients whenever possible, so a plus for not just buying everything from Gordon's Food Service. The Hawaiian pork loin and chicken quesadilla both got thumbs up. They have bottled and draft beers with some interesting local brews. The decor is great and the staff is very friendly. In fact, both servers we had seemed genuinely proud of this restaurant. I'd recommend this place highly. In fact, we made a special stop on our way downstate from Macinaw City just to sample more of their menu. I plan to make this a regular stop anytime I'm traveling this stretch of I-75. read more

Unfortunately was disappointed with their New Year's Eve "special" menu night! Special was 6-9 with reservations only. My reservation was for 8 and we arrived at 7:30 which was not a problem as we could have a drink while we waited. However that 1 blue moon was $5!!!! Thats crazy for a very average beer. Next was when we finally got our seat at 8:30 they told us they were out of 3 things on the "special" menu but we could order a pizza. So half hour wait with reservations only allowed and I can order a pizza? Maybe the worst pizza I've ever had as well! This was not my first time here but unfortunately will be my last. I only decided to go as I was excited to see what they offered for prime rib but when I found out it was gone I was kinda disappointed. This is a very average up north bar in a great location and really not much more! Nice staff but maybe next time they do a "special" event they will be better prepared! Our first visit was on a Sunday evening in October. We were surprised by a full parking lot and a 20 minute wait, but were seated within 10 minutes after ordering beers in the bar. We were happy to be seated in the large dining room that overlooks the lawn area adjacent to the river. The unfinished knotty pine interior creates a warm relaxed dining area. The first thing our waitress told us was there would be a 30 minute wait for food. Since we weren't ready to order but were very hungry we asked her to return in 2 minutes max. She did not return for over 10 minutes, only to inform us that the wait for food was now 40 minutes! We ordered an appetizer (20 minutes) along with our meals that took at least 40 minutes. We enjoyed our dinners of beef burgandy, whitefish sandwich, and bacon burger and the pricing was reasonable. Unfortunately, we ended up eating much later than planned which took away from the experience. They were obviously understaffed in the kitchen, resulting in a lot of waiting, hungry customers. I will go back but will probably wait until next year to see if they can improve the service. read more

Stopped in last night. I wasted my time driving there. Called ahead for reservations and they don't take them. Was told there was a 30 minute wait, we went anyway. Got there, the place is about half full. Four of us go inside and wait for hostess as the sign says. 10 minutes later I had to ask a waitress ( there were only two) where the hostess was. She said she was it and that it would be about 30 minutes before we could be seated (like I said, the place was half full.) I asked if we could sit at the bar. Sure but she says no one will wait on us for at least 10 minutes. Well, we waited a bit, and then decided to leave. The bar was filthy, couldn't sit there without other peoples leftovers all around, no bar tender, and the place was utter chaos. (Imagine that. A BAR that can't serve drinks.) You would think that a place that put a lot of dollars into an expansion would have a staff that could support it. Too bad. Customer Service is every bit as important as quality but the Thirsty Sturgeon has ZERO Customer Service. At least that was the case last night. read more
