The service was outstanding, our server, Jason, was very attentive and very friendly. the food was delivered to the table surprisingly fast, the fried green tomatoes were amazing, the chicken was fried perfectly to top my waffles, my wife had the trout cooked beautifully, and we agreed that the collards were very close to my personal recipe. It is a little over an hour from our home, but talking with fellow diners, we were told they have the best scallops they had ever eaten, and this couple live 90 minutes from us. If they are willing to travel 2 1/2 hours to dine there, then we will definitely go back to try those scallops. read more

Had dinner here tonight for the first time. Excellent! Started with cornbread baked in a small cast iron skillet, dripping with butter and hot honey. Divided it up between the 4 of us to save room for the main course. Delish! I had their Trout with bacon green beans and a sweet potato as sides. Really good. Some of the best trout I've had in a long time. One of our group made the mistake of asking about the gooey cake and ice cream. OMG That's something that should be divided up and shared. Not sure of their secret but I've had southern grits all my life but these were great. Food was delicious, great service, easy to get to and park. For lunch I had the fried chicken sandwich (grilled) with a sweet potato. Both were delicious. Don't really understand the great reviews to be honest. First of all we waited 45 minutes to be seated. Second we had no idea they didn't have drinks so couldn't even get one while waiting. The dips were good but served with little packages of Wrapped saltines of all things. Very weird to not have nice pita chips or something? Then we waited forever for our food which was mediocre at best. $17 for a TINY piece of smoked trout. And Salmon was way overcooked. Maybe an off night but I just don't get it. read more

Really a gem of a relatively small restaurant. Although their menu is trout oriented, there are a variety of meat and chicken dishes that are either on the menu or listed as a daily special. I've had oysters, blackened salmon, scallops, and trout on different occasions and each has been excellent. The portions are reasonably sized and you get two sides with entrees. As locals to the area we are OBSESSED with this wonderful place! We love all the staff, and the menu is incredible. You will never have a better fry on anything. The breading is spectacular, the flavor is perfect! There have been other restaurants in this building but this one is by far our favorite. Totally blown away!! We chose The Tin Trout for dinner because it was so close by, and we absolutely fell in love. We came back for lunch the next day! All the food we tried (grilled trout, blackened salmon, fried chicken, grilled meatloaf) was truly special. Same with the desserts. The full parking lot was a dead giveaway that this would be a great meal. Our hotel recommended the Tin Trout, and we're so glad they did. We arrived in town late and headed to the restaurant pretty close to closing and they seated us without question. Cozy, quaint restaurant with terrific service and delicious food - highly recommend. We tried the Carolina poutine and it did not disappoint. Crunchy fries, lots of cheese and gravy...comfort food at its finest. My vege hummus pita was fresh and tasty; hubby said his burger and fries were very good too. Sadly we just couldn't do dessert...hopefully next time, and there will be a next time! read more

Cute little cafe. Super nice staff. BYOB for wine/beer. Has a good regular menu but usually has a good array of specials that they present to you on a blackboard at your table. There's also a blackboard for desserts of the day. Fish basket and coconut shrimp were very good, along with the homemade chips. Corn chowder was super thick. Prices are a little high, though, for lunch...we spent $60 for two people at lunch with just the two entrees and a soup. read more

Casual, very busy restaurant with really delicious food. We had smoked trout and fried shrimp. Both super yummy, cooked just right and seasoned to perfection. Only negative is that portions are fairly small. We got 6 smallish shrimp and the trout was a filet the size of my palm. Not a lot given that both were about $17 each. Be aware it's BYOB - they don't sell alcohol. Wait staff was courteous and attentive. Overall very yummy and we'll be back. Just don't come super hungry. read more

I have never had an unpleasant experience at The Tin Trout, but tonight was exceptional. I tried the Shrimp and Grits for the first time, only upon the endorsement of a fellow diner. Honestly, the name did not appease my senses, but I was ever so pleasantly surprised with the dish served before me. If 5 stars is the gold standard of excellence, this would certainly be rated a 10. Service was perfect, and the staff was ever so friendly and kind. Rest assured if I find my way back here from Texas, I will definitely return to this establishment. Great restaurant! read more

Best trout I've ever had-also best collards too. They really know how to cook a southern meal. The desserts are delicious; highly recommend any of them. My family and I split 4-all of them rivaled each other. Ambiance is very quaint and cozy-it gives very much "hidden gem" vibes (I hope it stays a little hidden for the local's sake!). As for the service, Joe is the best waiter I've ever had (ever). He is so attentive, kind, funny, and just an all around charmer. His people skills are through the roof-I've never met someone who can talk to anyone the way he can. He puts everyone at ease and just makes an already great dining experience phenomenal. We're staying in Blowing Rock and decided to look on yelp to find a new place to eat...wow, the drive down the road to the Tin Roof in Linville was so worth it. The service was excellent, and our waitress the friendliest. The food was great. We had a delicious Fried green tomato appetizer. , We each ordered one of the lunch specials...Trout with two sides. As a local, I really really want to love The Tin Trout. We have eaten here now at least 10 times the past several months and have tried a variety of items. I always say will give it another try but sadly it keeps disappointing both my husband and I. The food itself is rather bland and the portions are small plus they have run out of items on the menu so at times the menu is limited. For the amount of food you get, it's also rather on the spendy side. I don't mind paying for good food, I'm not a cheapskate but I've always left feeling unfulfilled and overcharged. Service has always been good and I really like the atmosphere, just wish the food was better overall as I would gladly eat there on a regular basis. Ate there last night! I got the crispy fried catfish, cabbage and mac & cheese. Another guest got the grilled trout with greens and Mediterranean orzo salad. Both meals were amazing! The catfish had a red eye gravy that I wasn't sure I would like, but it was fabulous! Service was great and we received our food fast despite the restaurant being quite full. I've just had another wonderful lunch at the Tin Trout. The fried oysters and fried green tomatoes were outstanding. The oysters were luscious and fresh and the fried green tomatoes were drizzled with hot honey that was delicious. I've also had the poutine and it was exceptional. The shrimp and grits are a wonderful treat and I'm really impressed with the quality of the food. When I first sat down, a customer at another table came over and said you have to start with the desserts. He was part of a table of six and said the desserts were sooooo good. It's impossible to understand how a restaurant doesn't know when to change their fry oil that's rancid. It ruins what would have been a good dinner but the after taste of oil that's broken down being used too long leaves an oil slick in your mouth. You buy your desserts, which have artificial whipped "topping" on them. 1st you're eating an industrial piece of dessert, then you don't have the $3.37? to buy a pint of cream, whip it & add some sugar? The green beans really throw everyone off, because people expect southern green beans or gourmet Al dente green beans but the menu doesn't say, extra spicy green beans. The wait staff doesn't mention. The 2? little blackboards you carry around as menus, the oddest idea ever, gives 0 description of anything. We have so few places to choose from & Morels was so nice, you'd think their daughter would know oil only has a few goes before it needs REPLACING, Google it. It's OFTEN when 1/2 your menu is fried food. You'd think having come from a French food background of her parents she'd know what whipping or heavy cream is & how to stabilize it so it doesn't "fall". Any experienced "cook" or "chef" does. The inconsistency of the quality of the food is the #1 thing that will kill a business. The hours & days are impossible to keep up with. Spending a lot on dinner & eating rancid oil ruined the meal for 3 people that had food cooked in it. Yet you dare say anything & the owner is defensive & unaware something is truly wrong. I hope the quality can improve & they can afford real cream vs the cheap taste of artificial on desserts she says she doesn't have time to make in house. The parking lot is empty when most restaurants employee parking lots are full prepping for meals. Often even at 4 no employees are there. Maybe you could make your own desserts like other restaurants if someone came in in the morning to make them. And another employee could be on fryer cleaning & oil refreshing duty. It isn't rocket science even for a home cook. A waste of $ for our dinner & dessert. You're only open dinner & don't offer decaf coffee? Again, not rocket science or difficult or hard to comprehend people at night May want decaf. Maybe some changes will come about. read more
