The restaurant clearly thinks that their politics should be shoved in customers faces, as we were greeted at the front desk by a Trump 2024 sign, which immediately made my family and me feel unwelcome. Additionally, when we entered, we kindly asked what the wait time would be. The person working at the front desk impatiently told us that she did not know, and sternly told us to turn around and to write our names down, without a smile or any eye contact. Second time here after going to the Beacon Heights Trail. The food is mostly good. Their fruit option is straight out of a can. Portions are a little on the smaller side in my opinion. The service was okay but not great. The young man that checked us out wasn't pleasant at all. Seemed irritated. Very clearly ran and operated by Trump supporters. Stopped for lunch today. Service was good they were very pleasant. I had Reuben sandwich which was ok. The reason I say it was just ok is because they use spicy mustard instead of thousand island dressing and were very heavy handed with the spicy mustard. This is a very popular old school restaurant nestled outside at the crossroads of several parkways in the mountain region. It has a salad and soup bar as well as sandwiches served with a side. It gets very crowded especially for Sunday supper. Great spot! read more

I went to see a friend and this is the first restaurant he took me to. The service was fast and friendly and my food was cooked perfectly. I got the 2 eggs over medium, toast, hashbrowns and bacon. Bacon was nice and crispy. Potatoes could have been a little more crispy but I still ate it all. Unfortunately they only sell coffee by the jug thing, not by cup and because I don't drink coffee my friend didnt want to buy the whole thing for himself. Lol truly my bad. But I enjoyed it and the decor. And it seems like this is a local place for my friend to get Breakfast all the time so you will always have a regular customer there with him. read more

It takes some gumption to go after the Scottish food label, considering haggis. They seem to specialize in breakfast, though we were there for lunch. We each got the tomato basil pie which was ok if suspiciously identical. The fruit that came with it obviously came from a can. Apparently this is a favorite hot spot for locals and for the life of me, I'm at a loss as to why... As much of western NC was settled by Scots, it's common to find Scottish influence scattered about the mountains. The Tartan boasts an appropriated Scottish heritage theme, though completely unrelated I was told. The confusion of this place greets you as you walk in the door of The Tartan - there's literally a life-size British Queen's Guard soldier complete with grenadier headgear (with bonus 'Murican flag face mask)... It's as if folks don't know history, at all... Inside, I would describe the ambiance as greasy country chic. My lunch companion was just short of passing out so we bit the bullet and waited in line for this place while listening to locals both rave about the "best hamburger in the world" (spoiler alert: it was not) and talk shit about how the restaurant is critically short staffed because nobody wants to work & everybody would rather sit home and collect unemployment than work for starvation wages. (Uhm, ya think?) A very nice older gentleman waited on us. It was clear he was helping out and not a regular server. At first glance, the menu is chocked full of southern soul food options, however, the reality in my experience was overpriced poorly-executed low-quality, frozen, fried processed food. To be fair, there's also an open salad bar (in corona times) featuring iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, celery, & various fruits and vegetables out of cans, along with pudding & cottage cheese type things... Typical rural backwoods, processed, poor country salad bar food that I grew up unimpressed by. I ordered what I thought would be the safest thing on the menu, a loaded baked potato with cheese, chives, sour cream, & bacon instead of deli ham, for like $8 freakin' dollars... What I got was a large spud with a few chives and (I kid you not) a slice of American cheese melted on top. WTF? The server eventually brought the missing bacon, though I refused the spud. Ordered instead a fried fish sandwich - which was "meh" at best; did not finish it... The sweet potato fries were great and obviously frozen, so they got that going for them. My friend ordered the 'best burger in the world'; I tried it... I'm not sure what world the lady was talking about, but it's clearly (and thankfully) not the one I live in. So if you have any special dietary needs or if you just prefer to eat cleaner/healthier/consciously, you'll be hard-pressed to satiate yourself at The Tartan. The edible portion of my disappointing lunch here consisted of: 3 tiny thin overcooked strips of bacon, 2 bites of fish sandwich, half of the rest of the fish in said sandwich, and a handful of sweet potato fries... Indigestion was already setting in when we pulled into a farmer's market down the road for something wholesome to eat because I was starving and needed fresh fruit to revive my body. They took nothing off our bill. Pretty sure my friend (who paid) did not press the issue, as by the time of check out, we'd already wasted over 2 hours of our lives and just wanted out of there... Where do I start? We came in and were seated quickly and that's when our experience started going downhill. The service was terribly slow. We were seated with menus for 15 minutes before our order was taken. The coffee was very weak. We saw people that were seated after us get food before we did. I ordered the western omelet with fruit and a biscuit. The biscuit was not fully cooked inside. The omelet was very greasy with American cheese inside (disgusting) and the fruit side was straight from a can. The food wasn't just bad, it was also overpriced. Even my boyfriend who usually cleans his plate couldn't stomach more than three bites. In fact, this is the only time that I've left a restaurant with no appetite after barely touching my food. The most edible thing here was the toothpick on the way out. To top it off, they charge an additional 3% if you pay with a credit card. They are open till 2 pm. We were seated right away. Place is decorated like old country with plaid flags. We got Loch Ness ( fried flounder sandwich ) , the lasagna special of the day , and the MacLean ( pulled pork sandwich - yummy. My son got the Reuben and it upset his stomach. We accidentally ended up in Linwood Falls after a beautiful, snowy hike up Beacon Heights trail. What originally made us stop was the Highland store in front of the restaurant, but unfortunately it was closed. But, we were hungry and The Tartan was there. I am not sure what we were expecting, but it certainly wasn't a small town nondescript diner, which is exactly what greeted us. I am not complaining here, I am actually quite fond of these eatiers. As another reviewer posted, locals do seem to have noticeable preference when it comes to being noticed. We stood by the front door waiting to be seated for about 10 minutes. Granted, several of the wait staff made eye contact with us and said nothing. The wait kept getting longer as the guy at the register kept checking out customer, even those that got in line after we began waiting to be seated. At one point,we considered leaving. Towards the end, a guy finally informed us they would seat us shortly. Eventually, the guy at the register, albeit, very politely, handed us a couple of menus and told us to go seat in a booth near the back. Fortunately, that was the worst part of our experience, which in the grand scheme of things, it's not bad. We sat ourselves and the waitress came by almost immediately, was very polite, serviceable, and answered all our questions about the menu. The menu offers some traditional Southern fares and some Scottish themed dishes (In case you hadn't picked up on it yet, this is a Scottish-themed restaurant). While some of the "Scottish" dishes seemed interesting, ultimately they were just regular Southern dishes with Scottish names. I opted for the Reuben which was pretty good except that it got overly salty in some portions. For my side dish, I went with the potato salad which had way too much mayo, but otherwise was fine. I also went for the soup bar (although not unlimited, you only get 4 trips) and went for the chili every time. It was good, old fashioned, no bells or whistles chili. Perfect for the weather and a post snowy hike treat. My friend ordered the foot long and seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. This just feels like true home-cooking though, which is great! All in all, we had a good experience, and will definitely stop by again if I am in the area. read more

The staff was kind and prompt. But the food was not that great. I got the tomato basil pie. It was probably made onsite but hardly any basil, just tomato and lots of cheese. My fresh fruit was definitely mostly canned tropical fruit with a few fresh strawberry pieces cut into it and a few pieces of cantaloupe. Husband had the Western omelet with hash browns and toast. It wasn't bad, kind of just standard. He didn't catch ahead of time that they use American cheese inside the omelet, which isn't a very good ingredient. The decor was Scottish-themed but virtually nothing about the restaurant was connected at all to Scottish things. A disappointment for sure. read more

Hungry coming off Grandfather Mountain. Saw this and pulled in. I've been to Scotland and the Highland Games in CA, so figured this area supports that, maybe it's good. First off, saw most customers seated were an older crowd and it was lunch time and the place was not busy on a Saturday. That should of been my cue. If I could rate zero stars I would. We were there at 11:30 am on a Saturday in Christmas tree season. When we were waiting at the hostess stand, a party of six came out and told us they had been there more than an hour and a half. We were seated and the waiter told us it would be at least 45 minutes on food. Also that they were cutting off breakfast and only serving lunch going forward. We said OK and ordered quickly and waited for at least 45 minutes. During that time two other tables near us got up and left, having waited longer than we had at that point. A family with three kids were served food and told us they had been there for 90 minutes. The restaurant seemed well staffed. There were multiple bus boys and multiple waiters. But clearly something was going wrong in the kitchen and they just could not get food out for whatever reason. After 45 mins, we had been served drinks only at that point, so we dropped a $10 bill on the table and got up and left. Place could have done good business because lots of people were there but a kitchen train wreck made customers leave em masse. It's a shame because there aren't many other restaurants in the immediate area. read more

My wife and I ate there this morning, was told by the inn that we stayed at which was great place, was the best place to eat breakfast, I was over come when we first when we entered with political over tones of the Replicon party with American Flag and the selling of Trump T shirts! But we stayed and ordered a simple item 2 eggs scrambled, sausage patty, biscuit and hash brown casserole. We waited for a while then our meal come out. But waiter said biscuits would be out in a few minutes my wife finished her whole meal, but I held out cold eggs, cold sausage, still no biscuits! Waiter comes back to table and says biscuits are going to be at least five more minutes, do you want toast? I said yes, he went back to get toast and at least 4 minutes with undercooked toast! I love eating here. The food is always good and the service is great. Shad is the owner and she is always friendly. Her waiters and waitresses are always very polite and helpful. And best of all they have a sign taped to their front door that says leave your pets in the car. A great place to eat! Went for a casual breakfast with my mom. The wait staff was attentive and fast. My reason for such a low review is being served ROTTEN food. It smelled slightly off upon arriving to the table but we both ordered omelets one western and one with tomato and bacon. As soon as I took a bite I immediately spat it out, the foul smell was the rotten tomatoes they served both of us were to blame. The staff handled it the best they could, but how the heck do you miss this as someone who has worked in the restaurant industry this is so disgusting and disappointing. read more

It's ok. We've eaten here a few times but I can't think of anything really notable I would recommend. The one benefit is that the menu is varied enough that everyone in our group can find something they can eat. Salad bar is pretty good and one of the few in the area - I usually get that because the rest of the menu is fried or heavy on salt/sugar/mayonnaise. Great Sunday breakfast in a casual, friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Eggs, hash browns, bacon and biscuit were delicious, and the "Signature Tomato Basil Pie" was a comforting favorite.
