My wife didn't want to leave a review because she's too nice, but I'm writing it anyway because lying isn't the right way to do business. The owner of this store sold my wife a new Tonies box that was just released. The owner blatantly lied, saying that she was the only store that carries the newer boxes. She had my wife believing that she couldn't buy them anywhere else. I saw the same ones at Target that same day. I don't know why a business owner would intentionally deceive customers, especially about something that was easily proven wrong. We try to support small businesses as much as we can, and this kind of dishonesty hurts, and is what I'd expect from a big box toy store. This is like the Amazon of toy stores! There are so many toys here, many new toys that you cannot find anywhere else. They have a large selection of Legos. Also, puzzles, stuffed animals, craft kits and more. This is a great toy store for people of all ages to enjoy. I like how there is also sort of a seasonal section with summer items (goggles, pool floats, etc) and camp items (journals, postcard). The prices seem very reasonable. The store is quite large and clean despite so much merchandise. The employees were very friendly and went around asking if anyone needed assistance more than once. Spring in Dallas sure beats spring in Chicago so I would have preferred to spent our entire long weekend there outdoors, but if it was up to my children they would have opted for every spare moment at The Toy Maven. I myself was impressed to see that The Toy Maven had all of my children's absolute favorite toys- everything from Thomas the train, Calico Critters, all sorts of Star Wars toys, arts & crafts galore and so on. My 5 and 3 yr olds went around the store picking out their bday gifts for the next 89 years. I didn't have the heart to tell them they'd be over toys in the next 3-5 years unless of course they take after their dad who still has an impressive collection of Star Wars toys. He too was impressed w/ The Toy Maven. While toy shopping is always fun, you can actually play there too. My Thomas obsessed boy was in heaven w/ their 2 impressive train tables (one Brio and the other Thomas). He was having train table withdrawl while visiting his grandparents so felt right at home here. Perhaps he felt a bit too much at home since he refused to share the toys and our last trip there ended w/ us carrying out a tantruming 3 yr old. Something tells me not the first (or last) tantrum to be thrown at The Toy Maven. My 5 yr old girl was happy w/ the calico critter table and a giant bean bag chair in front of the books where she happily read and looked at toys. A quick comparison found that the toys here are a bit more expensive than what you'll find at the nearby Toys R Us or online on amazon, but to be expected at any local toy store. And the experience (tantrum or not) of shopping at this lovely store is worth a bit more. read more

Saved me on my son's birthday. I couldn't figure out what to get my little guy for his birthday and toy stores are few and far between these days. Remember back in the day when there were 2-3 toy stores and 2-3 video game stores in every mall? Kinda sad how kids these days don't have those kinds of shops to browse around in anymore. Or maybe they're not interested in them like we used to be? I looked up toy stores on Yelp and found The Toy Maven. Thankfully it was on my way home and I was able to stop by for some gifts. They have a wonderful selection and I really liked how organized the store was. They definitely seem to focus more on toys that encourage imaginative play and activities. You aren't going to find a lot of action figures other than the imaginex line of toys, which is fine. If you're looking specifically for action figures there are several stores around dfw that specialize in that and you can find those in big name retail stores too. I really enjoyed my experience at this store despite it being very very busy that day. I highly recommend you check this place out. I think it would be a really fun place to visit with my kids soon and let them find something we can enjoy together. The store is nicely organized in sections. There's a corner for outdoor play, a section for STEM toys and activities, legos, playmobile, vehicles and construction toys, arts and crafts, board games, puzzles, and then a lot of fun miscellaneous items spread around the store on the displays between the sections. Looking forward to my next visit. Really glad I found this place. The staff was really nice and courteous and just made the experience that much better. Highly recommend. I came here to grab something for a two-year-old's birthday party. This was based on a friend's recommendation, and The Toy Maven did not disappoint. I only explored a small portion of the store, but have a huge selection of toys packed into the store so I guarantee you will find whatever you're looking for, and much more if you bring your child. It was all organized well into sections based on toy type, so I had no issue finding something to fit the gift type that I was thinking of. I know what you're saying. "Omigod! Puzzle Zoo is the best toy store ever!" but you, my friend, are so wrong! My suggestion to you is that the next time you're thinking about going to Puzzle Zoo, instead head a little further down the road to The Toy Maven at Preston and Royal. Sure, its not as well organized and it really doesn't have any ironic little action figures or Teddy Ruxbin collectibles; but that's because it's not some hipster novelty shop aimed at Millenials suffering from nostalgia. No, this is a real toy store. It's chaotic, a little cramped, and unabashedly childish. Exactly what a toy store should be. I would make a list of highlights but they really have a bit of everything here: Books, science kits, puzzles, craft kits, bath toys, and a huge wall of board games. And the staff was very nice and seemed eager to help, even though we were 3 grown men with no kids manhandling coloring books and finger puppets. Now that's customer service! If I could give more stars, I would. I had worked my last reserve Ravensburger 1000 jigsaw puzzle, and was hopeful to find a couple more at this neighborhood toy store. I took a chance and drove by the store on my way home from getting groceries. Here is what happened today: Of course, the store is in compliance with the governor's mandate regarding COVID 19, so at this moment, you cannot go in to shop. I was sitting in the parking lot calling the store to order when the sales associate came out to see how she could help. I was so impressed by her and by the safe protocol they have in place! We maintained 6 feet, she took my number and called me from inside, I pointed at the puzzles I needed, and she took my payment info over the phone. Even after the October 2019 tornadoes and the current pandemic, The Toy Maven is still well-supplied. Friends, they have plenty of puzzles - so many that I found two and could have found more! The prices of the brand new puzzles that I bought were less than used puzzles on eBay, and I did not have to wait for them. Even better, they currently have their puzzle selection displayed in the front window so you can shop from outside. This is an independent toy store in the heart of Preston Hollow with Preston Hollow prices. This store can get busy, but the employees are helpful, and the toy selection is impressive. The store is packed tight with merchandise. So if you have a wild-child, I would suggest strapping them to your chest instead of taking them in a stroller. I had a hard time wheeling in between all the piles of stuff and aisles. Honestly, this place is a bit too expensive for me to shop here very often, but I recently found out they donate a bunch of toys to children's charities here in the Dallas area, and that kinda makes me like them a bit more. They carry toys that you won't find in most big box retailers. It's not a massive store, but they definitely make sure of all their square footage. Great place to go to find gifts for kids that are unique. Everything is split by age for the most part, so it makes it real easy to find toys for birthdays. It's pretty much my default store to go to for toys and gifts. What also makes it great, they gift wrap for free. Well, it's probably built into the cost (admittedly, the store isn't the cheapest). The only downside is due to it being so tightly packed with toys, you may find yourself bumping into stuff and kids as you try to navigate through, but hey, it's a toy store, what do you expect? Great educational and instructional toys as well as fun stuff you wouldn't necessarily find in a Toys R Us. The customer service is great, the people running this store are very nice. You're greeted and checked-on as you walk around, but they're not obnoxious and trying to push stuff on you. I just got back from The Toy Maven. Looked online for a toy store that was not one of the big box stores like Toys-R-Us, Walmart, Target, etc., and The Toy Maven was the first store listed. After reading some reviews, I made the twenty minute motorcycle ride from work to the store and went in. They had exactly what I was looking for, which was stuff that isn't in every big box store. Browsed for awhile and then Nick helped me with suggestions. He turned me over to the cashier and, as she was ringing up my purchases, two young ladies were wrapping my gifts in paper and plastic bags with ribbons. I hate to give this review as I am a proponent of supporting locally owned, non-chain businesses. That being said, my first visit to this store was my first and last visit based on my one and only experience. I live in the north Dallas suburbs and the closest thing we have to Toy Maven was Learning Express, which unfortunately closed. I was conveniently in the Preston/Royal area to pick up party invitations at a nearby venue that I was hosting my child's birthday party at, in addition to making a grocery run at nearby Central Market. Was needing to knock out the errand of picking up a birthday gift for my child's friend and figured we'd check out Toy Maven. Having 3 kids with me, I knew to give my public service announcement to my children that that they could look, but that we wouldn't be buying anything except a gift for their friend. I was impressed that there's quite a good variety of quality toys, such as Melissa and Doug, Legos, Thomas train, etc. The price point here is a little higher than what you'd pay than Target or Amazon, but that is to be expected when you're at a small independent store. We were greeted by a middle-aged female store employee who asked us if we were looking for something in particular. She wasn't overly friendly, but I wasn't expecting the same level of enthusiasm that I'd hear from a Disney Store cast member either. I responded that we were look around to find a birthday gift. She didn't offer to suggest any ideas, and we figured we'd browse and find something. We spent about 15 minutes browsing in the store, and my kids were suggesting toys that weren't really great gift ideas. As much as I could have settled and just bought anything, I decided that there wasn't anything we needed to buy here, and I reasoned I would just buy a Barbie doll at Target and call it a day. After we left the store, we weren't even five steps away until I heard the store door abruptly open quickly. I turned around to look, and it was the employee who initially greeted us who poked her head out to stare at us. I waited to hear her ask or say something, but she didn't. She didn't say anything and then went inside, and closed the door. I believe in this day and age, you should have a right to browse a store and not buy anything if you don't want to make a purchase. Having lived in DFW for 20 years, I have never felt that feeling of being profiled until that day. I'm sure it's a great store, but I won't return. read more

This is a fantastic toy store! I love bringing my toddler here because there is usually an unboxed sample of each toy on the shelves so kiddos can play with what they are drawn too. It can sometimes be difficult buying a kid toys because I think one looks really awesome and he looks at it like "meh." Then he goes and plays with an empty water bottle for an hour. The store is very clean and obviously kid friendly. My guy loves to play with the train set they have out so now that he has liked it a few visits in a row of course, now we have a train set too. They also have a wide variety of toys for every kind of kid. Top notch! read more

Very nice toy store with good selection. That being said, buying a toy truck for my grandson ($130 and not our first purchase there) was asking just too much of their rude clerk, Veronica. My request to make sure the toy truck's lights and siren worked properly before leaving the store must have been just too burdensome for her. The store was also understaffed. I've been a loyal customer for years and have spent thousands of dollars on all three of my children, in addition to birthdays, etc. Toy Maven's owner does NOT reciprocate loyalty, however. When I recently attempted a return WITH a receipt, I was told there was nothing that could be done, despite providing a receipt and returning within the return window. The item didn't fit the space for which I bought it; but because the box was dented (the item was fine inside the box), she refused to return or even offer a credit. The owner, who knows my spending habits at her store, offered me nothing for my years of loyal patronage. In fact, she showed no remorse and offered no apparent desire to keep my business. She traded a $25 return for all my future purchases and the lost purchases from people I will have discouraged from shopping there. My advice...If she hasn't treated you this way yet, she will. It's only a matter of time...Caveat Emptor, Buyer Beware! read more
