I went to Trim Scene to get a hair cut and beard trim. There were three people ahead of me, but getting a haircut in Arcata can be challenging so I decided to wait it out. About 30 minutes passed. The people ahead of me eventually got their hair cut, now it was my turn...but the receptionist had left her desk. One of the barber's came over and read the next clients name, but it wasn't mine-he had accidentally skipped me. No big deal. I waited 10 more minutes after the receptionist came back, thinking she would catch the mistake, then another client ahead of me was called up. At that time, I needed to be somewhere else so I politely asked the receptionist to take my name off her list. She said "ok", looking confused, then figured out I had been skipped and apologized. Again, no big deal. One of the stylists came out to my car as I was leaving and offered to cut my hair, which was nice, but I had an appointment to make and couldn't take any more time out of my day at that point. Due to this and other numerous experiences, I've come to accept that service in Humboldt county is pretty bad. I lived in San Diego for years, which is a service economy town, and became accustomed to the high quality of customer service. I am lowering my standards in the hopes I won't keep getting disappointed. I will give Trim Scene another chance, mistakes happen. read more

Walked in and one of the stylists asked if I needed a haircut, I replied yes and was told to sign the clipboard. That exchange came with a tall order of curt and a side of stank- eye. I was about to walk out, but figured it was late in the day and everyone was probably ready to leave, and I was viewed as an impediment. Whatever, my buddy was there, so I figured I'd wait it out. About twenty minutes later, the same stylist came over after ringing up her customer and asked the individual to the left of me and the couple to the right of me if they wanted something to drink. I felt like the stylist was ignoring me, and if she wasn't I wasn't given an opportunity to respond anyway. Really disappointing because I have heard good things and I wanted this to be a backup, when I can't go to my regular stylist. Great prices and kind people! I had been looking for a place to get a fast haircut/trim where I could BRING MY BABY lol... was kinda intimidated but they were nothing but nice here. The wait looked like it might be long but with 4 stylists working, it wasn't bad at all (plus you could visit the taco truck, Richards Goat or V and N while you wait...) Very impressed with the service and prices here. $35 for a women's cut... I haven't had a haircut that cheap since I don't know when. I was ok with the end result once she was finish but then when i went homei saw a lot of details and my boy(he was the client) was not happy at all. I could tell that was not a professional work, was a messy work, she when so fast that not even look if the beard was symmetric, was not even in anyway, did not take the time to detail it. Not entirely sure the stylist who cut my girlfriends hair had any barbering education. Several chunks were taken out where they should not have been, and where there should have been a fade, there was random length chunks of hair. Stylist did not put anything around my girlfriends neck to keep hair from getting all over her clothing (though she did apply a gown) Stylist also went out of her way to be rude and then ignored me when I asked a question (I asked two, very politely. and I didn't react when ignored) I know how to cut hair, (not to a degree I find professional or acceptable. But to a degree that people keep asking me to do it. I lived with a couple of barbers for a few years. I understand way too much about it!) though they seemed to assume that given my gender and appearance I was clueless. Moving past the negatives. I liked a lot of stylistic choices she made, I just wish they had been done better. I felt her banter with other women was great, but to myself and the 3 other men who walked in, we all felt a tinge of hostility. There are so many great hairstylists in this town. I was growing my hair out to donate it. It had finally grown out enough, and I decided to give this place a try. It has a fun, trendy design as it's logo, and the interior is very hip. As for the hair cut I received, I am not very satisfied. I told the hair dresser to have creative freedom. All I asked was that it be pixie-like. She gave me a very creative, fun, asymmetrical look. The cut is fun, just how I like it! However, looking closely at it at home, I realized that the fade she gave me was very chunky and unfinished, and she left tufts of hair behind my ear and at my neckline. Not a terrible haircut with some great, creative ideas, and fixable thanks to my buzzer at home. I don't know a lot about cutting hair, but I've had enough experience from getting my own hair done by dozens of stylists to know that she seemed a bit clumsy with the buzzer. Aside from the haircut, the experience I had was decent. The stylists aren't the best at conversation, but that's something I'm sure they'll pick up on. Customer service isn't the easiest thing to pick up, and I get that. There were some little nit-picky things they can improve for the overall experience though. For instance, putting a hand towel underneath my gown to prevent hair going down my back. If not that, at least wiping away the hairs with a towel after my hair is done. Just something small like that could have improved my experience. Instead, I was left covered in itchy hairs, grumpy from not feeling listened to, and with a haircut that I had to fix up when I got home. Edit* I forgot to include that the person who did my hair didn't know much of anything about hair donations. They didn't have rubber bands in stock for that type of situation, so I had to take the chunks home and tie them up myself to get them to donation standards. She told me that it only had to be 6 inches, when it actually needs to be 8-10 inches, depending on where you go. Just... Unprofessional. All around unprofessional. For a thirty dollar haircut, this really wasn't worth it. I'd have been better off going to Mastercuts in Eureka. read more

I think the woman who cut my hair may have been the owner, she was very nice and gave me my first dry cut! the layers I got were a little more drastic than I expected but overall the cut was great and my hair grows fast so I wasn't worried about it! Very impressed with this place. The woman who cut my hair (Susanna, I think?) knew exactly what I wanted from my saying "Sort of like an undercut." She predicted the lengths I would like without needing too much input. They were playing bluegrass in the shop, and it had quite a nice aesthetic. They also offer complimentary beverages, though she forgot to offer one to me until I was already paying. No big deal, I didn't want a drink anyway. I love that they only take walk-ins, because booking far in advance doesn't really usually work for me as my schedule changes often. The price was good, $20 for a basic men's cut. Mid-downward dog in my yoga class this morning, I was dismayed to notice my hair had several split ends. I've been getting my hair cut in the Bay Area for the past 6 months since I moved here, but this was a hair emergency. I took a risk by going to a hairstylist without a personal recommendation, and it could not have turned out better! LOVED my haircut and blow-out! I came in January to get my thick, long, hair trimmed. I have been growing it out for years and years. It was down to my back. I told the stylist with short blonde hair that I just wanted a couple inches off, jut enough to get it healthy again because I was growing it longer. I made that very clear to her. It was still in good shape I just had some dead ends. Nothing a simple trim of 2-3 inches can't fix. Bad signs: I told her that my hair parts on the side naturally but she ignored me and parted in the middle and said "well so it will be even" (but that doesnt make sense because my hair is always parted on the side, naturally) I told her specifically how i like my hair length to all blend in with another, I'm not a fan of layers. I just wanted a trim. She did layers anyway. I told her I hated the choppy look and i just wanted long even hair. Towards the end of the cut she started mumbling "umm...whats that" "whats going on over there, oops" My hair was behind my back the whole time so I didnt see waht she was doing. My long beautiful hair that I always got compliments on...ended up all on the floor. I stood up at the end of the appointment and my hair was at my shoulders. I had two chunks of short layers taht went to my jawline then longer layers then short layers underneath those long layers. It was soooo uneven. I asked someones opinion immediately and everyone I saw didnt even humor me with "oh it looks fine" my friends just let me cry into their arms and I let them laugh at me for a bit because I knew it was so uneven and so bad. I literally had something like a mullet... I looked like Lord Farquad from Shrek. I cried for two weeks and I just felt so ugly because my hair had always been so long and I hae been working on growing it out for years. And it wasnt even a cute short cut, she butchered my hair so it was awkwardly uneven and alll thin in parts of it. I just asked for a trim! Ultimately, I understand accidents happen. Im just still really dissapointed because its months later and my hair is just so short, and it doesnt feel like me. I had a friend comment the other day on how they notice the strange layers in my hair throughout and when my hair is naturally wavy it looks good now since its grown, but if I let it hair dry or if I blow dry it it still looks super awkward. I know it was change that was thrusted upon me by the universe and there was a lesson learned and now my hair is definitely healthier.....but I'm still really missing my long hair. The layers are still pretty awkward and its just so short it doesnt feel liek me. Its going to be years to get to where it was in the begninng. She cut like 12 inches off and did a shitty, uneven job. I guess thats what I get for going to a salon named The Trim Scene, where there are no appintments and the first thing she did was offer me a beer. I went in to get my money back the next day. I was super polite and nice about it, I work in customer service after all as a waitress so I know how it is. I told him everything and he seemed kind of irritated with me and his only reply was "Well not every haircut can be a zinger" well i think 2 inches vs 10 inches and giving someone a bob cut when they are telling you they are trying to grow their hair out is a bit ridiculous, how does that even happen? read more

Nice ladies, chill place, but honestly, don't go here if you're not a dude or a hipster. My friend and I got the worst haircuts we've ever gotten, and they were NOT cheap, $30-$35 each, just for a simple cut, no washing etc. I have long straight hair and just wanted it trimmed, cut straight across, but it came out pretty crooked and uneven. A different lady did my friend's hair, she asked for a bob and oh-my-gawd it looks so bad that she is going to another salon to fix it asap. Some good points were the punch card, 10th haircut is free... its a nice clean place, and they have great vibes. It seems like maybe there are too many hair dressers there, and unless you find a favorite, you get a random one.. maybe they could have a list of their hair dressers with the hair styles they're good at and when they're available. read more

While I didn't have the worst experience ever, I definitely wont be going back. I asked for a very simple, traditional cut a "Contour" so to speak. What I got was some odd, asymmetrical hipster do up. the stylist was polite enough, but argued with me on the definition of what I wanted. what really pushed me over the edge was something I noticed other reviewers mentioning, and that is the chunky tufts of leftover hair. I requested a square neckline, which is just a straight line. and got this v shape instead. the sparse decoration was cute enough. but it was just... not that good a salon. read more

My husband and my kids get their hair cut here (ages 7, 10, 14, & 37) and they always do such a great job. They really listen to what the customer wants and give them quality cuts- not a rush job like you often see at other salons. The kids love the rock & roll atmosphere, and I love that it's walk in only. I never need to worry about appointments and can rely on great quality work. One time I wasn't super happy with the cut (really not her fault, the cut I thought we wanted just didn't look right on his face), and she redid it until we were happy with a great attitude.
