I also tried the seafood gumbo, which could've used a bit more seasoning, but it was still enjoyable. They've got plenty of fried options on the menu. I was hoping to try the grilled fish, but unfortunately they were out that day, which was a little disappointing. The atmosphere is laid back and casual. Kinda thin, and meed another minute or so in the fryer (just for a little more crunch and GBD - golden brown deliciousness). The shrimp po-boy is really good with fresh tasting shrimp and crusty New Orleans style bread (toasted, too) The real star of our meal was the Buffalo Nickel Chicken sandwich. I am sure there are other reasons one would travel to The Triple Nickel to eat, but I have always found myself stopping in on my way back from nearby Pelican Park. From the looks of the clientele, I would wager that on weekends a large majority of folks eating here had also come from kid's sporting events. The restaurant is simple. Order at the counter, pay, get a number and fill your drinks from the soda fountain. The kitchen is open and you can watch the chefs prepare your food if you're so inclined. The menu is also simple. Burgers, sandwiches and salads make up the majority of the items. My favorites are the cheese fries, burgers, club sandwich and buffalo chicken sandwich. The club is particularly good with crispy bacon and fresh turkey and ham. Prices are on par with the other counter order type restaurants in the area. Since it is the spot to eat after visiting the park, it can get crowded, but the staff does a good job handling the crowds. Your longest wait will be in line ordering. If you need to kill time while waiting for your food there are a couple of video games towards the front door that your kids are likely to pester you for quarters to play. I stopped into the Triple Nickel Grill in Mandeville on August 19, 2023 because several of my friends mentioned they use to get good tasty burgers there. I decided to give them a try and boy was I completely unimpressed with my burger and fries. When my burger came out my fries were cold and the fries were terrible. I complained to the manager and she asked me if I wanted more fries to which I told her no. I also thought my burger was mediocre at best and the hamburger bun was one of the worst hamburger buns I have ever tasted. I have tried the Barley Oak restaurant on the lake several times and their burger and fries are far superior to the Triple Nickels burger and fries. My wife and I sonetimes split meals when we go out to eat since we have gotten older. We just dont eat that much amymore. Well today, we were charged an extra fee for splitting our meal at the Triple Nickle. No other restaurant has ever done that. It's not the amount of the extra charge that irks me.
