Yummy! Staying at the Southern Hotel in Covington is a treat. The staff recommended an upscale restaurant nearby but instead I chose this hole in the wall. I had wanted local flavor. I wasn't disappointed! A few members of the family say in back conversing quietly, and I ordered a shrimp po-boy and a cup of gumbo. Although the presentation wasn't eye-popping, what matters is the flavor, and I loved it and gobbled it up. Hit the spot and supercharged me for stroll around the quaint downtown of Covington, down to the Bogue Falaya Park and into the Trace, a beautifully converted 'rails to trails' walking path over a bridge to nearby communities. I had one night in Covington as I was passing by on my way back to Houston. I was determined to have the best poboy in town and Yelp took me to Vazquez. And I was not disappointed. I came in 30mins before they close and the place was rather empty. You can miss the restaurant as its in between two fairly bigger establishments. I'm really partial to Vasquez's, I ate their almost daily back in the early 80s when they were a grill working out of the back of their family grocery store in Gentilly on New Orleans. They operated out of the meat market area at the back of the store, there was a menu over the prep area on the back wall and the smells of cooking wonders roiling out of the kitchen. In those days there was no sit down, you ordered and carried out. I was stationed with a military unit at the Lakefront and come lunch time the place would empty out, most going over to Vasquez for a po-boy...at one time they even catered a lunch of military personnel from around the US at a meeting we had, quite a feat that became quite a fête. There were po-boys all around and everyone was very happy. Vasquesz, to me and my wife from Miami, was and is the quintessential place for a Cuban sandwich - why not, they were Cuban refugees- and still is. If their Cuban sandwiches were any more authentic they'd have a picture of Che stamped on them. Their po-boys have remained small-store quality right to today, even with a sea of latter day po-boy pretenders they stay right on top, their secret ingredient is quality. There isn't that any of that larger restaurant corner-cutting you can find at some eateries, you order fresh food and you get fresh food. If you are unhappy, they are unhappy and that hasn't changed over the decades - but then no one I know has been unhappy with their food. It retains its older and heavily bygone small, family restaurant feel and look, how we used to eat lunch in the 70s. The two Big Guys aren't in the back cutting french bread and chatting with the customers any more, neither Joe's 'home made hot sausage (killer stuff) or his wonderful in-house marinated Cuban pork, but any of their po-boys or that signature Cuban sandwich is guaranteed to make your meal. It's a family restaurant that specializes in great family food that, in over 40 years, ha never failed to please. We still drive some 60 miles one way to eat and reminisce and for my Miami ex-pat wife to have a have a great Cuban sandwich. read more

Rated a five because I got exactly what I expected. Came in for lunch and they were surprisingly empty, and ordered the Cuban sandwich and fries. We sat down and they brought the food to us... usually you pick it up at the counter. Our party of 3, all enjoyed our lunches, a gumbo, meatloaf plate, and my sandwich. Staying at a hotel nearby for a wedding and decided to try out this place. Very nice interior which reminds me of Poboy shops of old on the westbank. You know the kind, carpet floor, tables covered with checkered style tablecloth and those dang chairs. The food was good and exactly what I would expect of your local poboy shop. This restaurant serves daily specials consisting of good ole' home cooking--simple and delicious foods we all grew up eating--and sadly don't see a lot of anymore. I'm pretty sure they always serve red beans on Mondays... My husband and I decided to try it 3 weeks ago at dinner. We found parking around back. Decided on the hamburger steak with lima beans and rice and a Cuban sandwich. My husband liked the Cuban sandwich a lot. It was all good, but I was most delighted with the lima beans. I was expecting a side of little green lima beans, probably doctored from a can, and a side of rice. No! These were the huge, white limas that require soaking ahead and cooking all day to turn into a creamy, delicately-flavored, delicious, thick porridge that is then poured over a bed of rice. I love lima beans--and red beans and white beans, too--but just never make them anymore. These tasted very close to what I used to make, so made me feel warm and cozy with nostalgia. Husband stopped by for take-out last night on the way home from work. He chose shrimp creole for me and the hamburger steak with the side of lima's for himself. He probably won't do that again, because when he got home, I confiscated half of his limas and rice and took off! That shrmip creole looks very good, too, but it will have to wait. We love rich, gourmet, and ethnic foods...just not every day. So we're both very glad to have found Vazquez and plan to be regular customers. read more

It is owned by a Cuban family and run as a family restaurant to the point of kids helping out on the floor and the sweet older lady they call abuella. The menu is typical NOLA, poboys (all the usual suspects) daily specials, pasta, and a few Cuban favorites to include a good Cuban sandwich and excellent black beans and rice. Felt very unwelcome by the rude lady who was working the register and taking orders. She stated when I was placing our family's drink orders this was a bad time to do a birthday dinner party. Wow okay, I say well it's a very special family members of ours and we appreciate them being open and considerate, she was such a very condescending person. With every word she said, not pleasant whatsoever. We are all having our good days and bad but her attitude as a server/wait staff was the first I've ever witnessed in a restaurant ever, no excuse.. My sister and I wasn't even hungry. Especially with the bowl of salad and piece of tomato. Let the public know beforehand or just don't open at all, but put someone with some actual experience with people maybe? Perhaps someone more inviting when greeted at your restaurant? We called when they opened to inquire about their availability and if we should make a reservation. We were told To get there a little earlier which we made happen, but no reservations. No one told us about the limited menu either but that was understood at this time. 2 of us didn't get a dinner plate. The server lady insisted chicken strips were orderEd when it was supposed to be the catfish plates for others and just this was a DISASTER! Very local and very good. This place is located in the historic district of Covington. You need to park behind the building. There are several restaurants on the same block. This is the least expensive, but has the most personality and charm IMHO. The Cuban sandwich is classic. They serve a lot of the standard New Orleans neighborhood fare and I have never had a bad meal here. read more

When they were in Gentilly we used to go often. Then sadly tragedy struck, they close down, and move their business to Covington. But it's now 2020 and the Vazquez family has abandoned their old restaurant here in Gentilly and it's now is a constant blight in our neighborhood. I started eating at this restaurant as a child growing up in the Gentilly area of New Orleans. Their po-boys are always amazing. So when I moved to the Northshore I felt at home with Vazquez being right down the street. My favorite sandwich is the cuban lunch special. You get a small cuban sandwich that is UN-FREAKIN-BELIEVABLE, a side of black beans and fried plantains. OMGAWD I love it! The owner is always at the register and if you are lucky, a song she likes will be playing and she will belt it out for you. I think she was singing "if you like pinacolada" the other day at lunch. I've had their chicken parm as well and it is fantastic. But I really can't get passed the cuban. It is to die for. Parking is a PITA at lunch. Also you can bring a snap of your kid and they will hang it on the wall for you. It is a bit pricey for lunch but worth it to me. read more
