I've been itching to take a jewelry making class at Amalgam ever since seeing a Groupon deal for…read moreit, and I finally got to go this weekend! I took the 4 hour workshop which was mostly metal working. It was an amazing experience. Wendy is an awesome teacher and explained each step of the process thoroughly. She made herself available to the students and did a lot of one-on-one work. Although we all made the same project (a ring), Wendy made sure there were many opportunities to customize it. You determine the band size of your ring, decide to have a patterned or smooth band, whether or not to have a stone set in the ring, and the color and shape of the stone. I left Amalgam with a beautiful handmade and custom ring! The 10am class went until 2pm with many opportunities for snacks and bathroom breaks in between. The way the class works is Wendy explains each step as you go along and floats around the room to help people complete that step. For the complicated steps (i.e. Soldering), Wendy works with students one by one to ensure safety and correctness. When you're waiting for your turn or letting your ring sit in the "pickling solution" as Wendy calls it, you can relax and do whatever. I snacked (bring food or buy it at the cafe right outside), socialized, and studied for an upcoming exam I had; so, bring things to do or not - just a heads up. Remember to wear close toed shoes, and be ready for an easy, relaxing Saturday at Amalgam if you take the 4 hour workshop, which I highly recommend. It's a fabulous activity for mom/dad and daughter/son dates, a girl/guy's day, or plain ol' self care. Location and parking: The studio is situated in a grouping of buildings that kind of look like bungalows. When pulling into the lot, you won't immediately see Amalgam. You will see a small cafe and a storefront with a big letter "D" on it. Amalgam is between those about 100 ft farther back. There's a small parking lot so if you're going to a class, I would highly recommend showing up early to nab a spot.

It was so much fun and such a cool way to get creative. The women working there were so sweet, helpful, and accommodating. We never felt rushed at all, which made the experience even better. We had plenty of time to play around with colors, get creative, and make our bears completely our own. I booked our experience through Viator, and one important thing to know ahead of time is that the bears need about 72 hours to fully dry before they can be picked up. We were visiting from out of town, so luckily we had a friend in the Atlanta area who was able to pick them up and ship them to us afterward. Definitely something to plan for if you're traveling! Such a fun memory for my son's 10th birthday and we got to bring home our own little works of art. I would absolutely recommend this for families, friends, a date, or honestly anyone who wants to do something different and creative while in Atlanta! 10/10 ! we had a blast!

Boots and full clothing coverage is provided. But no eye protection for those who wear glasses. We anticipated it to be more of a group experience so we were surprised it was only me and who I came in with. I suppose it is self-explanatory but I also am more of a visual learner and would have appreciated some more tips and tricks before starting. You are given the primary colors and then some to work with. Sparkles and glitter are also offered at the end. Overall, we had a good experience but I do feel as though some aspects are lacking in terms of more guidance on how to customize or achieve certain effects. Would come again if some kind of discount is offered since we were there for less than 15 minutes for two canvases.

Yoga, tai chi, rock climbing--all of these activities involve a certain body awareness and require a basic level of core strength and fitness, and they're usually fun enough so you're never really thinking about sets and reps and muscle groups. Last night, I encountered one the toughest but most-enjoyable workouts when I went to the Circus Arts Institute. Located in a loft complex near Dekalb Ave, I joined a number of students (I was one amongst four beginner students, in particular) for a 90-minute session consisting of a pretty strenuous warm-up and cool-down as well as activities including tightrope walking, rope climbing, and trapeze. I would find myself both wired and tired after the session, the excitement and fun of what we did clashing with the unexpected amount of exertion required. Everyone here is all smiles and encouraging, eager to see you succeed in anything that you might try.

So, yeah, the circus classes aren't necessarily related to my tassel and glitter endeavors. (Maybe it was sparked by Yvette calling me Cirque de Sadie and suggesting it should be my stage name.) Whatever. Every few months, we'd be at an event and there'd be girls up on a trapeze or in the, um, circle-thing. "Freakin' amazing!" I would say to myself. "I can totally do that." I looked into it, and bookmarked the Circus Arts Institute web site. Then another year passed, until a few of us were talking about pole dance classes. I'd like to give that a try, too, but first I had to put up and give the trapeze a go. I enrolled in May for a 12-week session. Carrie Heller, who runs - and lives in - the Institute, is really fascinating. She encourages everyone to do cardio outside of class; she talks about diet and nutrition; she has a degree in physiology, I think, as well. In the first class, I climbed the Spanish Web (the rope), got up on the trapeze, and attempted walking the tight wire and juggling. Not so good with the juggling. Next class, I tried rings and loved it... got totally hooked. For my birthday this year, Bryant got our friends to contribute to a gift certificate for a second session. Some of them came to the last night of the first session, which was a sort of show-off day. I did a rings routine; nothing too hard, but it certainly demonstrated what I had learned over the first couple of months. Now, my second session is halfway complete. I'm going to have to re-allocate some funding to continue with it. Circus/aerial training is the crack - highly recommended crack.

You can rent equipment, studio time, and even become a member and sell your art during their annual show. What's not to love!!! They give you some time to play around with clay and practice the depth you need to use with the impressions. Even with the practice, I still didn't use the proper depth, unfortunately. But my piece came out ok. You get to choose from two different glaze colors- I wish there had been more. And the color I chose didn't turn out exactly as I had expected. The staff there was really nice. My friend and I both left something there. Me- my folder of vouchers. My friend- her water bottle and a ring. They held on to the lost items for us. I am an English speaking who went to the Latin American Association with very little knowledge of…read moreSpanish. I took their level 1 Spanish class first and loved it! My teacher (Alejandro Pelaez) was very detailed in his explanations and gave us plenty of opportunities to learn and grow. I then moved on to the one on one tutoring which helped me understand the complexities of the language. I still have a long way to go until fluency but The Latin American Association really laid a great framework for me to learn Spanish. The programs were great and all the staff was very helpful. The prices for 1 on 1 tutoring were a little too much for the average worker in my opinion thats why i gave 4 instead of 5 stars. If they decrease the price i know they will quickly obtain more students. Overall i loved my experience and will take another 1 on 1 tutoring in the near future. *** PS: for anyone trying to learn a language there is no one program or class that will get you to fluency. I was successful in my classes because i immersed myself in the language as much as possible outside of class (apps, spanish radio/tv everyday, etc.) The Latin American Association helped bring it all together and was a valuable resource in learning the grammatical ways of the language.
