They also had mocktail options for those that don't drink alcohol. I loved the way everything was laid out and how it was so fun and interactive to follow along. We even had a game inside our name tags to help us get to know our tablemates better. Additionally, they had food catered, which was delicious - we had mushroom bruschetta, pasta salad, BBQ pork sliders, meatballs, and waffle-coated chicken bites. And they even had a delicious biscoff cake for dessert! We were given a QR code to take with us with all the drink recipes an we got to keep the shaker too. Woodburning + Charcuterie Board Class: I've been wanting to take this class for a while and so happy I could make the date. I took my mom to celebrate her birthday. We chose our designs prior to class and were presented them when we arrived. Just like the last class, everything was laid out and the live step-by-step instructions are easy to follow. It was so fun to see our creations come to life! They partnered with "If These Boards Could Talk" who guided us through making a charcuterie board while we followed along with the ingredients provided. And because there were 2 people celebrating a birthday, L&L even had a cake at the end! Vibe: LaToya and Linda of L&L really make you feel like family coming into their events. I took the 4 hour workshop which was mostly metal working. It was an amazing experience. Wendy is an awesome teacher and explained each step of the process thoroughly. She made herself available to the students and did a lot of one-on-one work. Although we all made the same project (a ring), Wendy made sure there were many opportunities to customize it. You determine the band size of your ring, decide to have a patterned or smooth band, whether or not to have a stone set in the ring, and the color and shape of the stone. I left Amalgam with a beautiful handmade and custom ring! The 10am class went until 2pm with many opportunities for snacks and bathroom breaks in between. The way the class works is Wendy explains each step as you go along and floats around the room to help people complete that step. For the complicated steps (i.e. Soldering), Wendy works with students one by one to ensure safety and correctness. When you're waiting for your turn or letting your ring sit in the "pickling solution" as Wendy calls it, you can relax and do whatever. I snacked (bring food or buy it at the cafe right outside), socialized, and studied for an upcoming exam I had; so, bring things to do or not - just a heads up. Remember to wear close toed shoes, and be ready for an easy, relaxing Saturday at Amalgam if you take the 4 hour workshop, which I highly recommend. It's a fabulous activity for mom/dad and daughter/son dates, a girl/guy's day, or plain ol' self care. Location and parking: The studio is situated in a grouping of buildings that kind of look like bungalows. When pulling into the lot, you won't immediately see Amalgam. You will see a small cafe and a storefront with a big letter "D" on it. Amalgam is between those about 100 ft farther back. My teacher (Alejandro Pelaez) was very detailed in his explanations and gave us plenty of opportunities to learn and grow. I then moved on to the one on one tutoring which helped me understand the complexities of the language. I still have a long way to go until fluency but The Latin American Association really laid a great framework for me to learn Spanish. The programs were great and all the staff was very helpful. The prices for 1 on 1 tutoring were a little too much for the average worker in my opinion thats why i gave 4 instead of 5 stars. If they decrease the price i know they will quickly obtain more students. Overall i loved my experience and will take another 1 on 1 tutoring in the near future. *** PS: for anyone trying to learn a language there is no one program or class that will get you to fluency. I was successful in my classes because i immersed myself in the language as much as possible outside of class (apps, spanish radio/tv everyday, etc.) The Latin American Association helped bring it all together and was a valuable resource in learning the grammatical ways of the language.
