I've been itching to take a jewelry making class at Amalgam ever since seeing a Groupon deal for…read moreit, and I finally got to go this weekend! I took the 4 hour workshop which was mostly metal working. It was an amazing experience. Wendy is an awesome teacher and explained each step of the process thoroughly. She made herself available to the students and did a lot of one-on-one work. Although we all made the same project (a ring), Wendy made sure there were many opportunities to customize it. You determine the band size of your ring, decide to have a patterned or smooth band, whether or not to have a stone set in the ring, and the color and shape of the stone. I left Amalgam with a beautiful handmade and custom ring! The 10am class went until 2pm with many opportunities for snacks and bathroom breaks in between. The way the class works is Wendy explains each step as you go along and floats around the room to help people complete that step. For the complicated steps (i.e. Soldering), Wendy works with students one by one to ensure safety and correctness. When you're waiting for your turn or letting your ring sit in the "pickling solution" as Wendy calls it, you can relax and do whatever. I snacked (bring food or buy it at the cafe right outside), socialized, and studied for an upcoming exam I had; so, bring things to do or not - just a heads up. Remember to wear close toed shoes, and be ready for an easy, relaxing Saturday at Amalgam if you take the 4 hour workshop, which I highly recommend. It's a fabulous activity for mom/dad and daughter/son dates, a girl/guy's day, or plain ol' self care. Location and parking: The studio is situated in a grouping of buildings that kind of look like bungalows. When pulling into the lot, you won't immediately see Amalgam. You will see a small cafe and a storefront with a big letter "D" on it. Amalgam is between those about 100 ft farther back. There's a small parking lot so if you're going to a class, I would highly recommend showing up early to nab a spot.

The parking was great and the tour of the studio was really cool to see and learn about the process. Then we got a ton of hands on time with the pottery, about an hour and a half, and then we got to pick from a wide selection of glazes which the artists will apply and then in about 6 weeks we will be able to pick up the pottery. I was blown away by the price of the class. I received it as a gift, but when I learned that it was only $65 per person for a 2 hour class and 2 pieces of pottery I was shocked. There was a couple ahead of us so we waited for a few seconds and then approached the counter. We advised that we were scheduled for the 5 PM class. The staff checked us in, pointed us in the right direction, and also informed us that we could roam around and check out their gallery before our class started, since we were a little early. I would say initially there were a bunch of people milling around. I was not sure if they were staff members or other patrons, but we did not initially get a very welcoming feel. Not a lot of eye contact or warm smiles. We roamed around checking the gallery until our class started. We approached the training area as it got close to our scheduled start time. Our instructor. Zoe greeted us warmly and told us she would get things started soon. Before class, she conducted an official tour that led us around the whole property. She clearly explained how the whole process would flow. Then she did a full demo before we even started. She led us through the process, and we were able to create three different creations, but she let us know that we were only able to keep two. Zoe was a star; very informative, patient and knowledgeable about the whole process. She expertly stepped in and helped us whenever we had questions. We washed up, picked out final colors for our creations and checked out. She advised that it would take 6 to 8 weeks for the whole creation to be baked and ready for pick up. For some reason, I thought we would be able to take our creations with us that day. Overall, we really enjoyed our first time at Mudfire.

It is the first glass blowing…read morecollective I've ever been to and it happens to be in East Decatur not that far from where I live. I first learned about Atlanta Hot Glass through the Emory Alumni Association, as strange as that may sound. I'm an alum of Emory (in case the comment above didn't make it obvious) and when I received the latest newsletter about upcoming events and goings on, an event about an interactive glass blowing night caught my attention. Fast forward two weeks and my boyfriend and I showed up at Atlanta Hot Glass, owned by Emory alum Susan Chin, and were introduced to the fascinating world of glass blowing. Let me tell you, it's harder than it looks, but lucky for all of us (there were about 20 people there in all), the instructors were fantastic. In addition to helping us make our own blown glass ornaments, they showed us some awesome examples of what you can make once you've gotten more skilled at it. We learned how hot the glass has to be to be malleable (it's kept in a 2050 degree furnace), how hot the 'glory holes' are that melt the glass shards and color the glass (2200 degrees), how glass sculptures are molded and shaped and transferred to the oven to cool down, etc. It was incredible and eye-opening and really fun. I thoroughly enjoyed myself since everyone was so friendly and willing to answer questions and assist us. Susan's cousin was great because he explained to us what was happening as the instructors were demonstrating making different pieces and when I was making my own blown glass ornament, my instructor (whose name escapes me), talked me through each step and why we did it. Atlanta Hot Glass also offers classes, studio time and opens itself up to the public like it did for Emory that night, which is great. Even if you're not sure that's your thing, you can take a course or a couple individual classes to figure out if it might be. A big kudos to the Emory Alumni Association for organizing this event and to Susan for kindly opening her studio to us. It was a fantastic and unique way to spend a Thursday.

After visiting the website, I called and spoke with Susan. She was extremely helpful and gave me lots of information. I chose the "Hands on Experience" for nine people. The process for payment and scheduling was very smooth and professional. Upon arriving, our team was greeted by the instructors, Lee and Jeremy. We were given safety tips and general information about glass blowing. Then we jumped right in. We had a blast! We each created a glass piece (paperweights and ornaments) and had a true "hands-on experience". I highly suggest this activity to large groups and small! For large groups I suggest keeping the pieces simple to allow time for your entire group to have a chance.

But, it didn't work for me at all. Then, don't get me started on how small & unsafe this place is for the children. During nap time all of the children in the whole daycare sleeps in the hallway that's so unsanitary & weird to me. And not to mention that she didn't pay me for those days I worked which was to be $19 a hour. So when I resigned a couple days after I reached out to her about the process of me to get paid. She ignored me because she was out of town living her best life. But then she replied she asked me for a mailing address for my check which she received. Then I waited a few more days to see if it would be in the mailbox but it wasn't so I reached out to her again. Then in her words she said "The check will be sent 30 days after your resignation date since we did not receive ample notice. The training check will be received by Aug. 4." So, I waited again at this point I'm being very patient with her. It's August 11th & still haven't received a check!!!!! She will not reply to me & it's very inconsiderate. But the moral of the story is don't work here or send your child here.
