Our stay was wonderful and something she remembered with fondness for (sadly) the rest of her life. The handmade breakfasts felt to us like they were made exclusively for us and all were excellent. The suggestions for visiting the area homes of Frederick Church and Norman Rockwell was especially welcome to me as an artist as were a couple of other highlights of the trip. The Inn itself was immaculate, well appointed and felt period correct. I wish I had luggage large enough to take the purloin the Jacobean chest from my room and smuggle it back to Texas. If I lived in NYC, which I am glad I don't, I would figure out a way to spend many weekends here. I have traveled extensively through all 50 states in the last 50 years, stayed in cheap hotels and spectacular resorts so I think I know a thing or two about quality and The Inn at 34 is at the top of my list. I acknowledge that satisfaction is a relative thing depending on two things, the facility and you. I can only state that I give The Inn at 34 five very large stars. Given only five stars to choose from I cannot recommend it any higher.

Look, even when I went camping as a child with the girl scouts, we were in the Hamptons in platform tents (I slept with one eye open after I saw all the spiders in the tent) and once, a house. That ain't embracing nature. Really. This is much more my speed. And I know people hate the word "glamping," but I feel it was created for city types like yours, truly. Those of us who love the idea of the great outdoors, but need some of the comforts of home. Like running water, private toilets and heat! I'm getting there. Baby steps. These tents are no joke. They are super thick and zip tightly. It was so cold the night we stayed and our tent stayed toasty warm thanks to a space heater and the wood stove (don't worry, they help you with instructions or they will light it for you). I truly loved my experience here. It was a gift for my prenuptial celebration weekend. Yes, it's extremely expensive, but I think it's worth it. Look at it this way: you are getting the treatment of being in a lux hotel in a gloriously bucolic setting. You're out of the city. Put aside those expectations and just embrace your time here. My advice is to take advantage of things like drinking a glass of wine by the bonfire and under the stars. You can't put a price on that. And I know you aren't doing that in Williamsburg. We did pass on the arranged dinners and I can't vouch for how good they are or aren't, but the vegan version didn't seem all that appealing to me for the price. The lovely town of Hudson is minutes away with a plethora of dining options. What I loved: the hospitable staff, wine + bonfire, the sumptuous bed loaded with comfy linens and blankets, the wood burning stove making everything smell divine... pure hygge bliss (and finally, I've used that word in a review!)

Buyer beware! The staff is nice and gives lots of suggestions...I would say stay one or two nights and go into town for dinner!

I chose to stay at the Nautical Nest for my second trip to Hudson, NY. I liked that it was closer…read moreto shops, galleries, and restaurants on the west side of Warren St that I had missed during a previous visit. The Nautical Nest is the second property of the owners of Nest Hudson. Of the four units, I booked a second floor room with a balcony after researching details on several third party websites. As the name suggests, the room had a nautical theme with a well-chosen decor and nice finishes. It included a king-sized bed (very comfortable mattress), chest of drawers topped with a beverage station, and a desk. The bathroom was bright, with great quality towels and strong shower pressure. Nest Hudson shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner were provided. My favorite feature, however, was the Nespresso coffeemaker in the room! This was very convenient, and I was happy to have a high quality coffee everyday. I also enjoyed the balcony for morning coffee and to relax later in the day. An outdoor patio is next to the building. There is also a communal kitchen with a small fridge, microwave, and tea kettle that some guests seemed to use quite often. Individually wrapped snacks and tea are located there, and replenished every few days. A few tips: 1. The Nautical Nest listings on multiple third party websites state that there is "free parking." In reality, it is free STREET parking. Fortunately, I visited during a less busy week, so I was able to secure parking on the same street as the hotel, City Hall Pl, most days. However, parking is not allowed there from 9pm Wednesday to 8am Thursday, so I moved my car to the nearby Union St. Unfortunately, Union St is subject to alternate street parking rules. There is no signage to indicate which is an "even" vs "odd" side of the street, so a ticket will be issued if you park on the wrong side of the street. I was unaware of this parking issue prior to booking my reservation. I notified the owners to update their third party website listings. They may also want to arrange parking for guests in a nearby municipal lot as some other hotels on Warren St have done. 2. The Nautical Nest is an older building, so floors and stairs are creaky. You will hear anyone who is up and about early, including housekeeping. If your room has a window A/C unit, street noise will be quite audible (road construction, back up truck alarms, etc). I purchased ear plugs after waking up to the sound of a jack hammer the first morning of my stay. Prior to my arrival, I also received two requests to "keep noise at a minimum" and "be mindful of other guests" in informational emails from management. I also received an additional reminder when notified that my room was ready for check in. Although I understand the intent, I thought this was a bit much. Overall, the Nautical Nest is a quality boutique hotel. I enjoyed my room as it was quite spacious and comfortable. Although I was stressed about the parking situation, other guests may be less concerned. If you are a "morning person," the sounds inside and outside of the building may not be bothersome.

Everyone sounded like an elephant stampeding past the door. I was glad we were on the second floor and hope we didn't disturb those below us too much --No coffee! Please add coffee service. A Keurig machine, some milk in the fridge, some little sugar packets go a long hospitable way! They did have an espresso machine, but we are not in Italy. I need my good old American coffee to start the day - please don't send me out into the cold to get it!

But it would also be a superb choice for a solo or couples' vacation--I'd love to return someday with my spouse--or a corporate or extended-family retreat, if you reserved the entire property. It's important to understand what The Amelia is and isn't (in light of some of the other reviews). It isn't a full-service hotel--there isn't 24/7 staffing--and it isn't a bed and breakfast (so there's no hot breakfast, or even a restaurant). That said, if you need anything, the staff is super-responsive by text, and they do offer daily housekeeping if you want it. Instead, think of The Amelia as a private home, owned by a wealthy friend with impeccable taste, and you have the run of it. And the lack of full-time staff gives you even more privacy (aside from other guests, but when I was there, we didn't bother each other). There are multiple beautiful public rooms on the first floor--perfect for lounging with friends, reading, or working--and a gorgeous area in the back with a 35-foot-long pool, patio, and fire pit. And you get to enjoy it all. My room (#6) was fabulous. It's spacious and at the top of the house, so it feels secluded, and it has what I'm guessing is the best view in the house, overlooking the pool and backyard. The serenity is great for working, reading, or sleeping. There's a giant walk-in closet (which I didn't avail myself of, but it's there). My bed was incredibly comfortable, of what I consider ideal firmness (a pretty firm mattress). There's a desk in the corner that's excellent for working. The windowed bathroom has a huge shower with a rainfall showerhead and great water pressure (weak pressure is a pet peeve of mine). The location can't be beaten. It's on Allen Street, which is pretty and quiet (and has lots of parking--but there are also multiple spots behind the house, on the property itself, and they never got filled up during my stay). At the same time, it's a short walk to Warren Street, the main thoroughfare in Hudson, and all that it has to offer--including restaurants, cafés, galleries, and shops. (Some recommendations: Feast and Floret, for a nice meal; Isaan Thai Star, for a casual meal; Mel the Bakery, for incredible pastries; and Culture Cream, for creative flavors of scrumptious ice cream.) In short, I LOVE The Amelia. I've stayed at some great hotels and resorts over the years, but this is a personal favorite. It overflows with understated luxury, while at the same time abounding in character and charm. I can't wait to return, as either a solo traveler--maybe I'll make this "writing retreat" an annual event--or with my spouse!

It's a walkable tiny town with some nice restaurants and shops very conveniently located with a minute or two of the hotel, and a whole lot more in the region. No food service at the hotel, but there is a coffee station in the common area and a shared mini fridge as well. The bagel shop located literally across the street is open nice and early, though, and the tokens for the fancier coffee shop nearby are a nice touch. The setup for traveling with kids is also great - my kid loved the crib and the cozy lounge room with toys and books was a much-appreciated play space.

My boyfriend and I spent the weekend here for our anniversary, figured a nice quiet 'country' escape from NYC/Long Island was up our alley. We couldn't have chosen a better place - even despite the rainy/misty/over cast weather. We arrived late on Friday - I called ahead and Mary let me know we're welcome to stroll in at any time. She gave us tips for finding the place so late at night and let us know she left all the lights on in our Eco Cottage so we'd have no trouble finding it. Once we pulled in the driveway, we walked around the main house to find the cottage ready for our arrival - and with fresh cookies to boot! From what Mary has told us, the Eco Cottage is fairly new - I honestly didn't find many images online except for on their blog. But it was the perfect size for two, had a sink, hot plate/tea kettle thing for hot water/coffee, old school radio, blow dryer, fan, AC, heater, and place to hang up and store clothing. The bathroom had an odor free composting toilet and shower (with walls made of chalk boards from a school across the river!). Also handmade soap and eco friendly shampoo and conditioner. Each morning we had a delicious, hearty breakfast prepared with fresh eggs/produce/etc. straight from their farm. On Saturday, Mary asked if we had plans for the day (which honestly due to the weather, all of my initial thoughts went out the window) and then suggested several things in the area we should check out. Ended up going to nearby Chatham for their October Feast and finished the day at the Hudson-Chatham Winery with a wine tasting. For dinner, we went to Wm Farmer and Sons in Hudson, due to their specialty in mixology (highly recommend), however another couple this weekend suggested Local 111, 5 minutes away in Philmont. Sunday morning we went to go see the pig, chickens and cows on property, practically next to the house, and met Mary's two dogs Cree and Mr. Shivers - super friendly, small, adorable. Enjoyed another amazing breakfast, packed up our things, and headed out. For anyone looking for a true, home away from home experience - I highly recommend Thyme in the Country. Mary was a fantastic host, our room was perfect, the whole weekend was peaceful and quaint. Really looking forward to coming back in warmer weather to make use of their pool! Note: there is no refrigerator in the Eco Cottage, we had purchased cheese while in Chatham - asked Mary and she had no problem putting our cheese in the fridge in the main house for us.
