We brunched at Hudson Roastery twice on our winter getaway weekend to the Valley. In a word: it's a gem! The shop offers everything you want or need: comfy seating, warm environs, genuinely friendly and attentive service, delicious from-scratch foods and beverages, and good prices. The trays of homemade baked goods coming straight out of the kitchen looked and smelled wonderful, too. Hudson Roastery is really good at what it does. I highly recommend it! read more

Incredibly bummed, especially seeing all the positive press around the quality and the sourcing they claim to approach business with, that quite a lot of the food being served was from SYSCO or another large similar restaurant supply vendor, ordered by the case and baked from frozen. Now first off, don't get me wrong, buying in bulk or sacrificing the quality of some ingredients to large suppliers like this is definitely a reality when running a restaurant. Even moreso in this day and age when ingredient prices are exorbitant. That said, it needs to be reflected in the price point. Pastries are arranged beautifully under cloches in the display case, but I could spot the premade, ready-to-bake spinach feta bistro (https://www.chefswarehouse.com/products/QZ119984/) or ham and cheese croissant (https://www.chefswarehouse.com/products/99971/) from a mile away. The avocado spread on the preassembled breakfast sandwiches is definitely the pulp from the 3lb bag from Chef's Warehouse too. I know that taste! All of that said, they had a few items in the case that I'm sure weren't from one of these big vendors. Which was great to see. My (yes, unsolicited!) advice would be to pare down the menu. Offer just a bit less so you can focus on the quality. Try and tap into some local producers if you can! That's one of the best things about the Hudson Valley... how much all the purveyors and markets and cafes support each other. It's clear too how much they care about the community. They're dog friendly inside. No WiFi to encourage people to chat with one another. Fine. I really want to see this place continue to thrive, it's just a bit of a bummer that a significant part of the menu including things that really should be fresh, aren't. read more

I ordered a coffee in a to-go cup but wanted to sit down and drink some of it for a bit before I left, so I asked if that was ok. The person I asked seemed to think this was a bizarre question but ultimately decided it was fine, as long as I could find a seat. Her tone would indicate that this was a near impossible task despite the shop having a population of exactly 6, but I managed to find one since I can identify what several empty chairs look like. I found it strange that I was waiting there for about 10 minutes, especially since the coffee I ordered was iced, but found it far more concerning that I was dumb enough to wait an additional 10 minutes after that before investigating. It turns out that there had been a cup of coffee poured, placed at the counter far from my seat, and in a position that was completely obstructed from my vision. It appeared to be iced as well. I asked if it was my coffee (since no one called my name, and if they did they didn't call it a second time) and was given "yeah" as an answer, presented in the manner one might respond to someone if they asked if we live on Earth. I had already sat for far longer than I intended to so I left, and luckily I was outside at this point because the coffee sucked and I was able to spit it out. Great coffee place in the area! They're open super early at 7am, which is a life saver for grabbing high quality coffee before we left Hudson. The quality is always consistent and the place is super cozy with fresh flowers. The breakfast pastries looked so good and fresh. They were beautifully displayed and a huge temptation. read more

4.25 Really cute place for some breakfast. Chic vibe with really nice staff. We got the Belgian Sugar Waffle, Organic Egg Sandwich on Pullman, a caramel black coffee, and a double shot cappuccino. The waffle was really tasty--well-cooked, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, with nice bits of sugar. The berry compote and whipped cream added a pleasant sweetness. The sandwich was also good. It was basically a grilled cheese with egg and ham. Nice toast on the outside with a buttery taste and gooey cheese. Although everything was good, the portions are small, and it's a bit pricey. read more

A cozy feel at home cafe, I mean the booths to the sit down bar felt like you were at home enjoying a coffee or tea. The Arnold Palmer was pretty good, although it could sweeter and had more lemonade mixed, since it was a 90% tea- 10% lemonade, the apple streusel was perfect, fresh apples and really sweet, not too cinnamon heavy. Following a breathtaking and informative tour of Olana State Historic Site--built by and home to legendary 19th century landscape artist Frederic Church--we made the short drive into Hudson for lunch at Hudson Roastery (4 Park Place). We ordered two freshly-made iced black teas to start. My wife ordered the Moroccan Chickpea Salad--with arugula, dried currants, almonds, and pepitas with a classic preserved lemon dressing. I ordered the Organic Egg Salad with Pullman toast points, dressed with Lemon Gribiche and just a touch of smoked Paprika. You order, pay, and your drinks and food are brought out by a staff member when ready. Our drinks came rather quickly and you could really tell that these black teas were freshly brewed, delicious. The lunches arrived shortly thereafter and were excellent, fresh and full of flavor. After I finished savoring my egg salad I went back up and ordered a piece of just baked apple strudel--after-all, it is apple season--with a dollop of whipped cream (thinking of my wife here who ever have strudel without some cream on the side). We shared, it was rich and apple-licious, though I did think the outer crust was not quite as crispy as I might have preferred, but that's a nitpick. We talked about what we had seen at Olana while finishing our teas and then departed. We would definitely return to enjoy a mid-morning coffee--as they do roast their own coffee beans and even offer hour-long "roasting experiences" by appointment. Walked here on a chilly morning in Hudson. The ambiance is 10/10. The customer service is unmatched. - some of the friendliest people I met while in Hudson and seemed so genuine, which to me adds a lot to the atmosphere and vibe of a place. But the reason for the lack of stars was unfortunately the coffee itself. I'm not sure if we had a bad batch or it was burnt by accident but it was not good... my boyfriend, who will literally eat or drink anything, ordered a cappuccino with maple flavor and eventually after walking a few blocks and forcing himself to take a few sips, threw it away. Something I have NEVER seen him do. Like, ever. I ordered a butter pecan(?) latte and the flavor was WEIRD. (I did go outside of my usual on that one so maybe that's on me.) I went to Hudson back in the summertime with my boyfriend, but this was one of the best meals I ate there. The caesar salad dressing was to perfection and the lobster roll was so packed and fresh. I love the open space of the cafe and I can feel the difference of friendliness of the locals and employees versus in the city. (2/5) I want to support Hudson Cafe, but the last visit was disappointing. Our food came out cold, which made it seem pre-made rather than freshly heated. I ordered the quiche Lorraine and asked if it could be warmed, unfortunately it appeared to be microwaved, which left it soggy and watery. The flavor was also off; it honestly tasted like there was curry in it. On top of that, the pricing felt steep for what we got: one sandwich, one quiche, one soup, and two iced teas came to about $50. I also asked for the Wi-Fi password and was told they don't offer Wi-Fi for customers, which was frustrating since my texts wouldn't go through and I needed basic connectivity. The staff was kind and accommodating, and I appreciate their attitude. But for the price point, I expect properly heated, fresh food, reasonable portions, and basic customer amenities. This is the best expresso and bakery in Hudson. On our short visit to Hudson, we enjoyed lattes, pastries, and shakshuka breakfasts. The service was better than great! The owner was wonderful and she made us excessively welcome. In addition , since we happen to be dog people , they allowed seating away from the food counter for folks with dogs !! They were one of the only businesses open at 7am and had some very nice pastries and brunch options too. I had a spinach and feta croissant and my husband had a beautiful looking and tasty egg sandwich. Plenty of room for seating in the early hours and it was busy but not noisy. Talk about a great getaway spot. Also, their coffee is incredible! After walking around town all day, this was a welcome respite. Smooth jazz playing in the background, beautiful interior that reminded me of Paris, fresh flowers on every table. A man behind the counter slicing dry aged meat for a charcuterie board all wonderful sights to take in while you're relaxing. I ordered the purple rain which is pretty much a lavender latte with little drops of real lavender to coat your drink; excellent. They also specialize in wines, and I saw plenty of people enjoying mostly reds and prosecco's, it all looked great. This place was so cute and is a great cafe/breakfast spot! They have a huge selection of coffee options and all were delicious including the dirty chai. We got the shakshuka and egg sandwich which were very tasty and the avocado toast was good but nothing special. Their pastries were delicious including the spinach pastry and croissants. This should be your first stop in Hudson. The owner was tremendously nice and welcoming, and his passion for his menu was overwhelming. He was excited to have my friend and I try some new wines on the menu, and was extremely accommodating of our different tastes and palettes. We asked him to choose our pairing of cheese and meats for our charcuterie board and it came out beautifully prepared and tasted delicious. The staff was friendly and attentive as well. We are visiting Hudson for the first time so we had lots of questions and they humored us in some historical tidbits and gave us some great local recommendations. It could be said that the problem with reviews on a site like Yelp is that they're usually written only under exceptional circumstances: the guest was left with either a wonderful or revolting impression. This means that the standard fare of experiences are often excluded. In general, since beginning to frequent Hudson Roastery a few months ago, despite living in the area since the middle of 2023, I've found it to be a well-run cafe, with a positive dynamic between its employees, a pleasantly lit and arranged interior, and the best coffee on Warren Street. If I were coming here to aggregate those experiences, I'd leave Hudson Roastery with a strong four-star review. It's with frustration, then, that I'm leaving a negative review -- but my hope is that what I write will be taken into account by management. My partner and I stopped by to both get drinks and a meal. I ordered my meal, the egg sandwich with avocado and ham, earlier, and it was delicious. As usual, great coffee. We had settled into the newly added space on the armchairs, and after about five minutes were the only people occupying the room. We had come to get a little work done on our laptops, and so had been enjoying ourselves for about twenty minutes -- thirty minutes at most -- when the manager came in and started talking to us. She first asked if we were new to the area or visiting, and when we said that we'd lived here since last July, and that I'd been to Hudson Roastery multiple times, she seemed surprised. No matter! I figured she was just chatting -- until she segued into talking about how she envisioned the cafe as a place for "socializing", such that she wanted to discourage the use of laptops, and how prolonged laptop usage could get in the way of other guests sitting down. In other words, she was asking us to put our laptops away, and her question about whether or not we were local seemed to me to carry with it an implicit judgment, as if our attire and/or behavior indicated us being "outsiders." I am a person who makes efforts to view things from other people's perspectives, and I could understand the manager's request if these conditions were present: - There was at least one sign somewhere indicating a preference or rule for Hudson Roastery being a laptop-free zone - I had frequented Hudson Roastery before and seen other people using laptops being asked to put their computers away - The establishment was busy and people were looking for seating - My partner and I had been occupying the seats for a very long time and had only ordered drinks which we'd consumed long ago Not one of these conditions were present, however. This was a Wednesday afternoon, no one was in the room we were occupying, the place was not busy (there wasn't even a line of people), we had ordered meals (my partner was awaiting the shakshuka), and it couldn't even be said that the activities we were using our laptops for were trivial, such as viewing entertainment videos on YouTube. All of this combined to remind my partner and myself of an angering and alienating experience we had in 2022 when walking into Swoon, another location on Warren Street, and being demeaned by the receptionist because we weren't dressed as if we were ready to board our yacht. It was hard to not feel like the manager at Hudson Roastery would not have come by to talk to us if my partner were seated more "properly" in the armchair and were wearing more formal attire. Our experiences in Hudson have, overall, been positive since moving here a little more than a year ago, but it's impossible to miss the cultural aspects of classism which come out here and there, from the snobbish attitudes of certain higher-ups, to the shops which sell pieces of scrap-wood as cutting boards for $120. My partner and I, both people of very modest means, want to feel at home here, and this interaction, while delivered as civilly as possible, left me confused and my partner visibly upset. If you don't want people to use laptops, you need to make it into an explicit policy, and put a sign up. You can't cherry-pick how you enforce it, because that's bound to play into your visual prejudices about who is and who isn't a "legitimate" customer. I now find myself in a position where I'd like to return to the place with the best coffee in town, but I really don't feel comfortable coming back, and I'm just so weary of covert classism. My partner certainly will never return. What a shame! read more
