The Union in downtown Helena is a superior dining experience and a welcome addition to the city's foodie culture. Its primary selling point is local--using beef from local ranches, encouraging Montanans to eat Montana raised products. All good. The interior is spacious, especially on the mezzanine. The airy feeling and subdued colors help to set a comfy vibe. All good. My group was there for dinner although locals claim lunch is better. It's difficult to see how that could be: the starters, a huge plate of lightly battered onions and mushrooms really went well with the curated list of beers and wines. The pea Ceasar salad was creative and oh so very good, and huge. My ribeye from Helmville was so tender, packed with flavor. Others raved over the sirloin. The sides were tasty and generous too--get the smashed Yukons. All Great. However, kitchen timing was terrible. We were just into the salads when the steaks arrived. Really. If you want to be upscale, hey manage your place. All Bad.

I don't understand the number of one star reviews. The Union is like The Bear if you've ever watched that show. Grill team and expo on display at the bar, great service as well. The steaks are incredibly reasonable and delicious. They are made in front of you on a wood fire grill. The chimichurri is out of the world. Fantastic apps.

What a way to close out my Montana adventure -- with one of the most memorable meals I've had in ages. This farm-to-table co-op experience was exactly what I didn't know I needed, but everything I was looking for. We kicked things off with a beef liver pâté appetizer that was as rich and velvety as a Montana sunset. Then came the spring ricotta cavatelli -- pillowy, delicate, and bursting with fresh, seasonal flavor. The golden beet and plum salad was a masterclass in balance: earthy, sweet, tangy, and stunning on the plate. And just when I thought I couldn't be more impressed... the locally raised, grain-finished rib eye hit the table. Juicy, flavorful, cooked to perfection -- a true love letter to Montana's ranching roots. From the moment I walked in, the staff made me feel like I was part of the family. The host was welcoming, the server attentive and kind -- it's rare to feel so genuinely taken care of. If you're in Montana and looking for a meal that reflects the land, the people, and the season -- run, don't walk. Highly, highly recommend.

Farm to table atmosphere. The tallow fried potatoes melt in your mouth, the roast beef was tender and the sour dough bread had that perfect crunch! Highly recommend checking out this place for lunch. I look forward to coming back.

Great spot for lunch! Fun atmosphere very bright and open! Plenty of seating for dining. Service was great. They have their selections of meat, sausage, and steak on display. Plenty of options to choose from and take home. We ordered their steak sandwich for lunch with the house chips. Steak was well seasoned.i love that their bread was soft, fresh tasting, and flavorful! Th fired onions were great and were served with a yummy sauce. They had Oktoberfest on draft which completed my meal.

Steak was tender and flavorful. Recommend getting it with the hen of the woods mushrooms and chimichurri. Wife got the shepherds pie which was awesome. Save room for the carrot cake or the pumpkin cheesecake!

Almost. Good but not quite great. Good friendly service. Great salad, decent portion, enough to share. Burger was disappointing. Not sure if it was the meat, the seasoning or the oil. Potato salad was a bit bland.

That was the best breakfast sandwich I've had. The service was excellent as always and they have added so much variety in their cases.

I popped in here a couple hours before, "Dinner" so I had to make orders of the tapa's menu. For those of you who don't know what a tapa is... it's basically, "finger foods". Sometimes you get main course kind of options as a tapa, but they'd be miniature. Think, sliders or finger sandwiches or whatever. Their tapas menu is a classic one. Basically, large portions of what you might have as a side. Let me say, I forget what they called them -- corn something. I want to say balls, but I know they're definitely not called cornballs. I'm from the south... we call them Hushpuppies, and these puppies are an ode-to-man. Phenomenal! Superb. Exquisite. Splendid. Or as our friends from the south would say, "fantastico". They drizzle some honey on them. Be careful. These puppies will slap your grandma. Enjoy

The ambiance was very minimalist, and the dining room was basically empty when we arrived. Again, the food looked better than it tasted. There was nothing objectively wrong with the food, it was just not great if that makes sense. The chicken on the chicken and waffles was crispy, hot, and fresh but the flavor just wasn't there. The breading was good but that is where the flavor stopped. The waffle was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and they even used real maple syrup! But again the flavor was just lacking for some reason. We ended up taking half of our food home with us which is NEVER a good sign. I might give this place another shot on a different day. Also, the coleslaw on the chicken sandwich had no flavor which made the sandwich even less impressive. Nothing to see here in my opinion.

She felt that was self-explanatory, so I took a chance & ordered it anyway. The second item I asked about was the Cafe Mocha, which is described as half coffee & half hot chocolate. Dawn repeated that to me; I went ahead & ordered it, because it's a nippy day outside, it sounded good, & Steve's prides itself on "whole bean Italian coffee". Dawn asked if I wanted whipped cream, & yes--that was the best part of this hot drink. It tasted like hot water with a bland chocolate flavor with no coffee flavor to be savored. Disappointment in a mug for $3.75. The Cafe Monte Cristo Sandwich looked promising when it arrived...but when I tasted it, the only thing which was flavorful was the bacon. The ham & turkey sliced deli meat was absolutely indistinguishable for any flavors of ham or turkey! ($14.95; scarcely any powdered sugar on the French Toast, either, which is a hallmark of a Monte Cristo...& no, it isn't deep-fried in any batter, but the French Toast is a clever substitution & departure from the original.) I ate half of it & boxed the other half...the French Toast was bland, too--very little flavor. My side item was something I always look forward to here, because so few restaurants serve onion rings anymore! These are a $2.00 up charge, & I told Dawn I like them on the light side, not too dark--& these came out close to being dark, & they must have sat in the grease, because they were tough on the outside...not the best onion rings by far. Disappointment again! I came here anticipating another great experience at Steve's Cafe, & it was completely disappointing until Alivia appeared: Alivia noticed I appeared to be waiting, & I was--because I saw on my check that the Cafe Mocha comes with ONE REFILL! Dawn never mentioned nor offered me a refill, but Alivia did--& yes, that's exactly how to spell her name, which is pronounced as "Olivia". Alivia gave me a to-go cup with a lid, & whipping cream & all, that excellent but of genuine "Customer Service" kept this review from being one star! Purely because of Alivia, I will return to Steve's Cafe the next time I'm in Helena, a 100+ miles from home! Thank you, Alivia, for saving the day for me: The next time, I'm asking for you as my server!

First, let's start with the positive notes. The place was clean, there dining room was big with plenty of open tables, our server was super nice and we were seated right away, the food was good for the most part. My over medium eggs were perfectly done, my lemon ricotta pancakes were delicious but the entire experience was ruined when the server brought out the bottle of TABLE SYRUP instead of maple syrup! I realize this is a small business but I haven't eaten Mrs Butterworth syrup since I was like a child. Anyway, the pancakes were fluffy, delicious and perfectly done, the sausage however had a soft mildly off-putting texture and the hash browns seemed old and had no flavor. I would come here again but not for the hash browns or table syrup.
