I had high hopes due to the reviews. We ordered the shepherd pie and it was overkill with spice and undercooked vegetables. They took it back and agreed it was done properly. We then ordered the RIB. Yes it's one little square piece of meat that comes sitting on two bones. The salad was overly salted. We thought it was a half a order, but it was not and it was $28. We then tried the carrot cake. It was good but dry Nothing great. We ordered the onion appetizer which I would have that again with a glass of wine, but would not have dinner there. This was my favorite meal in Montana. Everything was delicious. We had a family of 5 so ordered a more family style dinner with lots of different dishes. They accommodated us with bringing lots of plates. The ambience was very bright and inviting. They added nice touches with the flower bouquets. My favorite dish was a curry appetizer they had. Went into what we thought was a higher end restaurant for breakfast. We had to wait in line to order at the register. Only two options for breakfast sandwiches. They were supposed to have scones but we were told they hadn't made them because they were missing an ingredient. Our change was In quarters because they didn't have bills. Our sandwiches came in cardboard takeout containers and our coffee in paper cups. The sandwiches were good. Not great but good. The people were pleasant. The place was nicely decorated and clean. We've not eaten a lunch or dinner there but I hope they are better than "breakfast". I won't be able to talk my husband to go there again. read more

My brother-in-law, who lives in Helena, recommended the Union. There were 8 of us (1 child). A bit of a downer to start when we discovered the Union does not serve whiskey - only wine and beer. We made do. Our server, Hilary, was very pleasant, but as we would discover, not very good at her job. The Hostess, Sasha, was a bundle of joy -she made our stay pleasant. The menu is a bit weird - The steaks just list "Rotating Butcher" or "Rotating Premium". I had to ask how do I order a Filet. The answer - You don't! They do not sell filet's. They do Ribeye and strip steaks. I ordered the Ribeye Premium - my son-in-law and grandsons ordered the strip Butcher. Their steak was so tough they could barely chew it. My ribeye was very tender, but overcooked - I like it medium-rare- it came out medium. The other thing I did not like is that they pre-slice the steaks - not good. The salads, side dishes and pasta were very good - these items must be what James Beard is looking at because it sure can't be the steaks. My wife ordered the Shepard's Pie - Irish lass that she is. One problem- our server, Hilary, forgot to tell the kitchen so my wife had no dinner. Hilary managed to show up at or table after everyone had finished their dinner with the Shepard's Pie - totally Pathetic! The final straw was when I paid the check and noted that Hilary added a 20% gratuity because we had 8 people. Paying her almost $80 for pathetic service did not set well with me. My advice to people visiting Helena - check out the Overland Express or the Silver Star Steak House - stay away from the Union. rg read more

"Second star for the Waitress."she had to keep a straight face while telling me the price of this. Okay let me start this off with the fact that I have cows grass feed cows. Now that's not a big deal but I know what it takes to raise beef, lean beef. I gotta be honest with you folks. we were warned that they where pricey. But nothing was to prepare us for $73.00 14oz Rib eye just cooked nothing special besides that mashed potatoes I think and if I got a $17 salad. Holy moly. And so you are aware. my company works on commercial restaurants and I will walk the heck out of a restaurant if I think it needs to happen. most of the time it would be because of the smell but certain orders mean a real nasty kitchen. So to be nice we stayed and thought we'll just see how it is, by getting something a little bit cheaper on the menu. Give the cook a chance anyway even though we were looking for a good steak. But that wasn't happening wow $73 bucks. Heck a table of 4 with drinks would have cost us just under $500 to eat good anyway? Right? and have a couple of beers anyway. So what we did was, my wife and I split a $34 pot roast of some sort, that no joke was more fat than beef. I even pointed it out to the Waitress she said she'd get me a discount which was super cool of her. $9.00 no joke I had three bites of meat I let my wife eat the rest of the meat it was okay really tender and I already planned on going to get burger later. The other couple both got the $21 shepherds pie total $42 for what should have been a portion for one thankfully they bought 2. We think the cook forgot how much Rosemary! is just a bit to much! And folks I like rosemary I use it in everything pretty much. And I got to say sometimes you need to be notified if you are going about business making mistakes of pricing to High when your just not there yet. Especially if your just starting out. I'm assuming this is a new endeavor for the company. Because I grow my own beef and I don't think my steaks would sell for much more than 35- maybe 40 bucks and I wouldn't serve a steak with out a choice of baked potatoes and a side salad. And I know what I feed mine and don't think there is any reason to leave that much fat on a cut. I won't be back and don't really see a lot of people going there for a steak. maybe the Wasewiller, or the silver star next time for that price. read more

We went when they first opened and had a sandwich off the counter which was fine but nothing great. We went for lunch today and got seated. Their fryers weren't on and they were out of a few things. Daughter ordered Ribeye roast beef sandwich and bread was so hard that the roof of her mouth was torn up and the meat was flavorless but super fatty like if you ate a spoonful of crisco. I ordered beef and onion on focaccia. First bite sogged through bread and I had to use fork and knife to eat a couple more bites. Beef was unchewable and without taste. Potato salad bland and I think I found an eggshell in it. I never write reviews like this but two tiny inedible sandwiches cost us $40 and I just want to warn others. ill give the 2 because the waiter was great ( (bartender called in sick so he was doing both jobs). We were a party of 5. The $120 wine we liked ok but it certainly was nothing special. I has the mushroom with farro. The mushroom arrived lukewarm and the farro(risotto style) , was sweet. i inky could eat a few bites. My husband got the flatiron steak. He felt it was tough. My sister really enjoyed her sausage and cabbage. Nicely remodeled, very casual , much hyped local steakhouse. Friday night dinner; reserved front window seating but were seated in the back with no explanation. Newer server, very nice but a little confused about many things. Ordered the prime cuts ( flat iron and New York). Tried beef fat fried onions, beet salad, pea salad, and crispy Yukon potatoes. Steaks were perfectly cooked but much chewier than expected (especially the flat iron). Sides were interesting but the beet salad was pretty bland. Overall average food and average service, above average price. Not quite up to standard for a place that has been nominated for a James Beard award. Disappointing. Hope it improves! read more

This was a miserable experience. it took over 2 hours from sitting down to receiving our food. When it did eventually come it was cold and hard. When sent back they seemingly just put everything in a microwave and brought it back. For these prices this was fuckin stupid. Restaurant was highly recommended. We had reservations. We were seated on time. Service was good. We got to sit where we could watch them cook which was interesting. But that's as good as it gets. Their premium steak was a New York for $46. That price did not include anything else. The steak was horrible!!!!!! It was so tough I couldn't eat it. My sons was the same. Service was great, smelled lovely inside, staff were friendly. Stopped in and bought some Italian fennel sausage for dinner. Unfortunately they were very dry, mealy and had an unpleasant texture. Love this restaurant! I'm in Helena for several months (from Sonoma County) and The Union has been one of my go to spots since being here in Helena. It's a great spot to go in for a nice sit down meal with a friend/loved one. Sarah is a sweet gem of a server that has great recommendations from the food and wine menu! The hen of the woods, beet salad, and skewers/kebabs are a few of my fave options on the menu. I also go in regularly for a quick bite to eat or take out. I've sat at the bar and received impeccable, fun, and welcoming service from Austin! We came here for a Birthday and it was wonderful! The space is beautiful and all of us loved our dinners. I had the New York and my husband had the Strip steak, and they were both cooked perfectly. The remodel from what this place was is incredible. Helena is so fortunate to have this investment both in the beauty of the building and their dedication to local fare. Love how they bring in other local businesses for their flowers and baked goods. Came here for breakfast a different time and loved the Chorizo sandwich - couldn't believe how inexpensive it was considering the fresh local ingredients. Purchased a few things from the butcher shop and even my kids loved their salami and jerky, and they are not big meat eaters! Just what Helena needed! The Union has it all. The inside is beautiful, and food is the best in town. The food is perfect for dining with a group. The stunners for us were the fried onions, snap pea salad, smoked sausage with sheep's cheese, and the butcher's steak - all cooked to perfection! This is for Susan. My wife wouldn't let me write on the back of the receipt. We tipped you 12% and wanted to let you know why. While the restaurant running out of steak is not your fault we should have been told before we ordered drinks and appetizers. Steak is the only reason I came. We were not served any water until the 4th or 5th time you came to the table. We were not served our meat entrees with knives. You brought our entrees out while we were still eating our apps instead of staggering the order so the entrees sat there while we finished the apps. We named drinks that we wanted on the drink menu and you had to look at the menu to know what we were talking about. To the cook staff. The food was okay but the mashed and polenta were bland. The short rib was not very flavorful either and the pork shank was burned in some areas. We will be back to try again but as I've worked in restaurants for many years I always appreciate constructive criticism. read more

My husband and I are in town for 3 months on a contract and the union has been our #1 go to! we love that they source their meat from local ranchers and have different style cuts every time we go! everything that we try is amazing and we are obsessed with the nectarine and beet salad. breakfast, lunch and dinner are fabulous. Worst Hostess ever! The guy (glasses, no facial hair) should find another industry! He must be the owner's son. Walked in on a whim at 4:40pm just to try it out. Hostess answers "Don't start til 5" after we inquire about eating there. WE ask if we can get a drink then. His response, "Go sit at the bar". We do. Get a wine, beer and the beef pate (very good pate). So about 5:30 we go to hostess station (2 couples are eating and 2 guys are at the bar), he's hanging out talking to staff by the open kitchen...finally saunters over. We'd like to eat please (there's 2 of us). Do you have a reservation? No...place is practically empty. Guy grabs menu and starts walking to back. I ask if we can get a booth. "No". I just said, not interested. We'll spend our money elsewhere. He say what? I told him his attitude sucks! He didn't believe me and said what? ATTITUDE! We left and had a wonderful dinner and fabulous waiter at On Broadway. Customer service matters! Oh - we also ordered our Xmas prime rib from there! Their premium cut of meat was the worst I've ever had. A good friend tried the same cut at a later date and same story. It was gristly and very poor quality. Fantastic location, very nice decor, but most importantly- delicious food! We thoroughly enjoyed everything we tried! We had the meat plate with the honey ham and cotto salami. They were both fantastic! The bread was also delicious. My husband had the beef shank which was very rich and savory. I had the premium steak of the night (a boneless ribeye) with the bone marrow butter on the side. WOW! Best steak I have had in Helena, without a doubt! I also really enjoyed the winter slaw. Wife ordered well done steak. Waitress said ok. Came out medium very red. I told them we ordered well done and the guy said we only cook up to medium well. And I said well this even isn't that done. He gave me a dirty look and took it away. They brought it back and had browned it a little. Still red and my wife would not eat it. They never mentioned it or asked if it was ok. Clearly they didn't care to make her happy. The appetizers our group ordered were fine. One lady with us asked if there were any serving silverware with it and she was told no, use what you have. Other than some beer and wine there wasn't much else for drink options. They had a few bottled sodas available but nothing diet. So a few of us had water because they didn't want to have alcohol. The water was in carafes with no ice in them. The service was not very fast and we had to ask to get our water carafes refilled. It was never offered. My steak was the "premium cut" which cost more and the type rotates daily. It was fine but it came out pre sliced. I would have preferred mine not sliced and wish it was listed on the menu or even explained by the waitress but it was not. We won't be back. read more

This is supposed to be a steak restaurant. There are two "mystery" steaks on the menu each sold by the ounce. The waitress will tell you that one is a sirloin and the other one is also a sirloin but that costs more. Though they're sold by the ounce, you can only get a 10 oz cut. We ordered one of each but learned 10 minutes later that they were out of the one that costs more so I took a chance on the braised short rib which turned out to be awful. My wife ordered her steak medium and it came out rare. She sent it back but the kitchen couldn't even get it to medium rare. We ordered three sides. The mashed potatoes had a fancy name but I'm pretty sure they were just rehydrated mashed potatoes. The pea salad was snap peas and radishes covered in mayonnaise. And grilled bread. Here's the order of how our food was delivered to the table over 15 minutes...potatoes, snap pea salad, steak (sent back), short ribs, steak (again), bread. Staff doesn't know how anything is prepared when you ask while ordering. Pretty sure these guys will be out of business soon. read more
