It makes modest time demands on new members, but older members are free to do whatever they please. For the large majority, this is just visiting the attached gun ranges and blasting away all year. The shooters occasionally seem at odds with the conservationists, but everyone generally gets along. They have open socials every now and again, and host the yearly Thunder Valley Days, a shooting sports event where participants compete in Old West-style settings with period firearms. It's proven very popular over the years. They also host educational tours and lectures about conservation of trees, rainwater, etc. The location itself is a beautiful property up on Mullinix Mill Road, and they annually have a cut-your-own Christmas Tree sale. Membership is easily accomplished. The Walton League is probably best for individuals with a lot of free time, a strong desire to help the environment, a healthy and active interest in the shooting sports, and an outgoing, sociable personality.

The Liberty and Hutchinson Lodges comfortable slept 15 each, with plenty of areas to lounge and gather. The kitchens are an added bonus. In addition to the new main structure, they have Historical buildings and Summer camps.

Last Saturday, we visited the largest, permanent, model railroad display in the mid-Atlantic, owned…read moreby the Baltimore Society for Model Engineers. The Society was founded in March 1932 and is the oldest exclusively model railroad club in the United States. They maintain 2,500 square feet of model railroad displays of steam and diesel freight and passenger trains and trolleys, plus so much more. It was fun to see all the parts of the display - it really gives you a glimpse into the history of railroading. It is not easy to find, as the doorway is tucked into the left front center of the building and the society is located on the third floor with no elevator. The display is normally open on the second Sunday of each month, except May.
