Sprouts Farmers Market - Shrimp and garlic

When I got up early Thursday, there was a Sprouts bag with two high end chocolate bars, some special looking pure peanut butter plus three containers of TreeLine cashew cheese and a tray of spicy tuna sushi. The last items require refrigeration. But there wasn't any. No chemical ice packages. The bag was sitting in the sun. It was 74 degrees. There had been no notice that the bag arrived. How long had the food been out in the sun? I wasn't certain. Since the sushi and the cheese might have gone bad, I wasn't going to eat them. Instead, I called the nearest Sprouts store in Avenel, New Jersey. Melisha Webber, the head cashier, answered. From her first words, she was understanding. It was clear she wanted to help. Even though Instacart had made the errors - no refrigeration and lack of notice - she wanted to make it right. "Tell me what you had,": she said. "Please come here and we'll give you fresh items." She didn't know me. She didn't ask for proof. She just wanted to do the right thing. During a break in my schedule, I drove to Sprouts. When I asked for Melisha, two clerks already knew my name. "You must be Ron," one said with a smile. "We have some items for you in the refrigerator." Melisha took the items from me and immediately threw them away. She wasn't taking any chances. "Let me get you the fresh items," she said. "I hope you don't mind. I gave you two orders of sushi." This is what true customer service is. A person who doesn't look for blame. She just works on a solution. It was an honor to meet her.

I ended up getting the Lechon large plate instead and it was also so good! If I had to choose, I'd probably put the Half & Half jerk chicken & pork large plate above this one but it's a hard choice. To go I also ordered an order of their Mac & Cheese, the sample I got last week really had me hooked. I saw that they also had a new empanada - pineapple and cheese. Wow, that was also such a cool and tasty item. Would be good for the meatless eaters. Lastly, I had another one of the fresh juices. This time they had Soursop Kaffir Lime Tea, so unique and refreshing. I can't wait to go back again.

Jamaican-Filipino fusion might just be the most extraordinary combination out there, and we're incredibly lucky to have something this special in Metuchen--truly one of a kind. Such a welcoming space too, super cute. The meats are impossibly tender, literally falling off the bone, and the sauces are rich, vibrant, and deeply flavorful. Every bite was bold, perfectly balanced, and downright addictive. We ordered the jerk chicken, mango with plantains, and the cheese lumpia--and I'm still dreaming about it. I will absolutely be back. Please consider serving halal chicken so I can bring my parents along to experience this gem!! Also, the owners, Damion and Jeanne, are some of the most warm, genuine, and hardworking people you'll meet. There's something so special about connecting with the passionate artists behind such incredible food. Truly phenomenal all around.

The potato ball had a flavorful beef filling, but the potato itself was a little bland and slightly over-fried. 8/10. The Dominican Cuban sandwich was just okay for me. I wasn't a fan of the cabbage, it was a bit messy to eat, and the pork flavor seemed a little off. 7/10. The yuca fries were outstanding--crispy, delicious, and even better with both the signature pink sauce and the cilantro garlic sauce. 9.5/10. I also tried the chicken, pork, and cheese empanadas. At $4.75 each, they're generously stuffed and a good value. The chicken and pork were both tasty but a little dry, so I'd give each an 8/10. The cheese empanada was my favorite--gooey and delicious, though it could use a touch more salt. 9/10. Both dipping sauces were excellent. The pink sauce had a classic Dominican mayo-ketchup base with garlic and a nice tang, while the green cilantro garlic sauce was fresh and flavorful. 9/10 for both. The restaurant feels more like a takeout spot than a dine-in destination. There is seating available, but the décor is pretty minimal. Overall, I'd definitely come back for the empanadas, fries, and sauces, and I look forward to trying more of the menu.
