The fam and i were in monterey for the weekend and stumbled upon the village for a quick pit stop and who would have known we would have found this gem. I walked along the outside glass and saw that they had tito's vodka and liquor 43 so i decided to look @ the menu and boom there it was, a carajillo. For those who don't know it's pretty much the mother or father of the espresso martini and been around forever in latin american countries and throughout Spain, which consists of Liquor 43 x Espresso, shaken up generously and served over ice. I forget the girls names but they were so welcoming and had a bright smile from helping us and whoever else came in during the time we were there. The barista whipped up one the best carajillo i've had stateside which is rare because you can't really find them around here since most places don't carry liquor 43. I wish I could give a high rating because the pastries were excellent, especially the fig danish, which was so good that I came back the very next day. Unfortunately, my second visit left me feeling violated and unwelcome. I ordered an apricot danish and a cappuccino with oat milk. The coffee didn't taste quite right to me, so I politely asked the barista if I could have a little more oat milk added. I was told that I would have to be charged for a latte because adding more milk would change the drink ratio. I explained that I only wanted a small amount, not enough to turn it into a latte, but the request was still refused. What bothered me most was the next interaction with the same barista. I saw the self-service milk containers at the condiment station and mentioned that I would just add some myself, but they were empty. The barista said: "It's the same thing, I will have to charge you." When I asked what those complimentary milk condiments were for, the barista responded, "Those are for other people." As a paying customer (coffee and pastries), hearing that felt upsetting and dismissive. I left feeling embarrassed, singled-out and unwelcome over what should have been a simple customer service interaction for such a small request. I wish the owners would rectify the situation. The pastries were wonderful, but the customer service experience unfortunately overshadowed the visit. I would NEVER recommend this place to any of my friends nor family. read more

Beautiful beautiful little spot to stop by and grab a matcha and pastry ;) My matcha was exceptional. One of the best matchas I've had by far and even with trying macadamia milk as a whole milk substitute (which I have never done). I also tried their "mushroom" muffin cake and it was EXCELLENT. Sweetened to perfection by the mushrooms. My only complaint was the service - I was asking questions about the pastries in quest for the right one but the girls seemed rather irritated... the products were so good that I'll still be back! read more

Like many others, we miss Big Sur Bakery dearly and were saddened to learn both of the fire that burned their facilities but also the expected timeline for their potential return (2-3 years). The Village has stepped up to fill the void and is a gorgeous space that serves as an event and wedding venue, dining destination, but most recently, has opened to offer upscale coffee and pastries in the morning hours. The selection is more limited than Big Sur Bakery but includes a solid choice of coffee drinks and pastries before offering some hot kitchen items like a breakfast sandwich starting at 9:30. The vibes of the building and the indoor and outdoor seating space are top notch with manicured lawns, rustic wood tables and open spaces. The Village only Parking is plentiful and its adjacent to the convenient General Store for supplies and the River Inn for lodging. We ordered a sampling of their $9 lattes (Chai and Matcha) and coffee (espresso tonic) as well as several pastries. The highlight were the candy cap (mushroom) muffins and chocolate chip cookie although I also enjoyed the baguette sandwich. Credit cards are accepted and there's plentiful seating inside and outdoor. Judging by the crowds, The Village is a welcome fancier (albeit pricier) option for those who miss Big Sur Bakery. read more

Yesterday (07/26/2025), my husband and I stopped by The Village Bakery. It is a very cute little coffee shop with a few pastry.. My husband wanted a scone but I noticed a fly in the case with all the pastries. I kindly told the young lady " Oh there is a fly in the case." She barely tried to shew the fly away and closed the case. Then I noticed several other flies in the case but the young lady didn't seem to care. This coffee shop is so cute, after the recent burn down of the other amazing bakery, the drop-down windows, local barista owner who is very, VERY generous with the pastries. It was near closing time and like assholes we didn't check, but the owner cleared half her pastry trays and sent us on our way with an Americano and Matcha latte. They had a variety of milk alternatives. Yoga & healing studio right upstairs and a gorgeous restaurant in the connecting structure. Such a beautiful outdoor sitting area. Cute corner coffee store. The first day I got a chai latte with oat milk and my cousin got a matcha latte, both is really good. I also like to try different pastries in new areas and I came across this gluten free Meyer lemon peppercorn cupcake and it's a good balance of light and sweet. Cupcake is dense but light and the frosting is not overly sweet. And the best part is that it doesn't taste like gluten Our last day in town, we went back and I got the golden latte which is a turmeric latte and my cousin got the chai latte since I really liked mine the other day. It was pretty good. The only thing I was sad about the golden latte comes in a smaller size cup and I of course ordered the peppercorn cupcake again. The service here was probably the worst I've experienced at a coffee shop in a long time. Which is really sad given how great the reviews are. We arrived In the late morning when there was no line. The 2 girls at the front greeted us and then completely ignored us while they continued their conversation with another guy that was there. I'm assuming he had already ordered his drink because one of the other girls was already working on something. They were letting him sample different things and they just kept talking while we stood there. EVENTUALLY when he was done talking they FINALLY acknowledged us and took our order. We almost considered leaving but we were informed prior to our arrival by another person that Big Sur bakery had burned down which was our original plan. Plus we were dying for a coffee after hitting the road early. We placed our order and the prices were a little high for mediocre coffee that we did not enjoy. I would never return here based on service alone, but the prices and bitter coffee, will definitely guarantee a drive by next time we are in the area. read more

Both drinks were pretty awful. espresso shots were pulled poorly and had bad after taste, almost burnt ashtray like taste. i think they use regular sparkling water and not tonic water because it had 0 sweetness. Mo and I had a last minute change to our wedding weekend itinerary and needed to book a new venue for 18 adults and one child. We reached out to several different restaurants in the Big Sur area but we ended up booking with Cara here at The Village because their general menu offerings align with Mo and my normal taste. We had several pescatarians and a few who are lactose intolerant and The Village was easily able to accommodate all the dietary restrictions. Upon arriving our table was all setup and layed out so nicely with personalized menus from what we had agreed upon with Cara. They even had Mo and my name on them! It was a subtle touch that our guests enjoyed. The food itself was really delicious and everyone was happy at the end of the night. Offerings: Vegetable and Bean soup (Aromatic, tasty, vegetables were perfectly cooked) Little gem salad (Good, fresh, and light) Local Black Cod, confit tomato (Tender, perfectly cooked, light but tasty) Mushrooms & polenta (Creamy but totally dairy free! Mushrooms were delicious and I would definitely eat this again) Service overall was outstanding and even with this being a smaller restaurant our food still came out within an appropriate amount of time and conversation could pass between courses. Wow this was a little bit of a let down. I'm impressed pretty easily and I can say that this was overpriced bad tasting coffee . First the ambiance was 5/5. The poppyseed GF pastry was 5/5. The dirty matcha & dirty tumeric latte we got were a 0/5. For these three items it was $40. I know prices have gone up, but that is ridiculous. Honestly if the drinks were good I probably wouldn't complain, but we forced the drinks down. Maybe it was an off day... But if you go, maybe stay away from ordering these drinks? read more

I heard a buzz about this new restaurant in the heart of Big Sur, so my husband and I took a drive down the coast to give it a try. The Village vibe is modern, cool and relaxed and there were fresh local flowers on every table. The staff was welcoming and friendly and very knowledgeable about the food and wine. I was very interested to try the nut-based cheese board - I was blown away by the flavors, and the presentation was beautiful! We also ordered a watermelon salad and wild mushroom entree, which again, were incredibly tasty. All the food is thoughtfully sourced and fresh, with unexpected flavor combinations that are astonishing! I really can't wait to go back and taste more. read more

We just got back from the restaurant after one of the most enjoyable meals that I've had in a while. We decided to go on a whim since we were looking for a birthday dinner, Big Sur was our destination, and the Village looked like something we'd enjoy. Not only did exceed our expectations, I hope to start going here more frequently. We tried everything that they had on the menu, some x2, and loved everything we tried. Some highlights were the candied salmon "sushi" and the beetroot salad. The tamales were great, as were the sake bomb drinks we had to finish up the night. The tayberry sorbet on fruit compote was out of this world. The wait staff was phenomenal, and we even took some cashew based jalapeño cheese home with us! We'll be back soon, but you should really check this place out!! I'd give more stars if possible! read more

The food at the cafe was amazing! My BF was planning to go with a less healthy alternative at the store next door. He had his toast and I had the breakfast beet hash. He even had a little of mine. This was a great meal before our hike a Pfeiffer State Park. Sun Potion tonics, we both had the Adaptogenic Au Lait, it was good - expensive for a coffee but it had extra boosters so reasonable considering that. Also had a delicious Apple Pie Scone that was NOT made out of white refined flour. Very unique 'silver' ware and overall atmosphere. Biggest reason not 5 star, a little bit of 'East Coast' stick (price) shock on our parts. Would go back if we were in the area! read more

Came here last week while we were staying at the inn next door. Not only is it extremely inviting, the plants, the music , the smells but they are also so sweet! We were camping down the street and stumbled upon this dreamy little oasis while on a walk with our dog. They allowed dogs and went above and beyond to make us comfortable. The employees were so kind and even remembered our dog's name when we came back (3 more times to be exact). We brought our friends there the next day and they were just as impressed. They never rushed us, even when we just got drinks and played cards. My husband isn't into trendy hippy stuff, but he loved it too. Didn't think it was possible, but we love Big Sur a little more thanks to The Village. Dreaming of our next trip and drinking that village mocha. Finally, an organic cafe and restaurant in Big Sur! The space in itself is so beautifully designed. And the food, AMAZING! The owner drives all the way to Monterey's farmers markets just to get fresh and locally grown ingredients. Wish we found it sooner versus on the last day of our trip bc I would have come here every day if so. We got the smoothie bowl (pictured) and the adaptogenic latte! Spencer was our barista and made us a couple great coffees and gave us a tour of the grounds and shared some of the owners vision - thanks for spending the time! Whatever you're previous notions of vegan food is, you have to try The Village! The food is an amazing experience of presentation and flavor. I also enjoy non vegan dishes but I have to say the food was so impressive and delicious that I didn't miss having any meat or protein in my meal and I can't wait to come back and try the next dish. The warm snap pea salad was so delicious and the breakfast hash was amazing! We had a natural sparkling wine called Birichino Pet Nat that was also delicious. Cara and CJ are great hosts and make you feel so comfortable...and the vibe is so inviting! We heard about this place from my daughter, so we decided to drive to Big Sur today to experience the restaurant and it's wonderful menu. Eating vegan, I wanted to taste the cashew based cheese they serve. I had an extremely refreshing watermelon lemonade and a quinoa bowl with very fresh ingredients. Our group also enjoyed the grilled cheese and tomato soup and the omoletteand everyone was extremely happy with their pick. We added two cheese boards that contained a variety of cashew based cheese with figs, blackberries, plums and more. The presentation was lovely! You would think we would have skipped the dessert with all that food but we had to try another item because the food was so good. We split a sizable dessert of cashew based strawberry ice cream served with plums and crumbles. Vegans will absolutely love this place, but there are options for everyone! We have frequented all of the Big Sur restaurants...literally! We love Big Sur and we love to eat! We stumbled (again, literally as the signage isn't great) onto The Village Restaurant, not knowing the menu or atmosphere we decided to try it. Why not, we've eaten everywhere else. What a lovely experience!! The hosts were extremely friendly as were all of their staff. They were very knowledgeable of the products they were serving and were able to tell us where the ingredients came from, yes impressive! They made great suggestions for us including what type of beverage would accompany our food best. Oh, did I say that everything that we ordered was plant based, I'm not a picky eater and have never had a completely plant based meal, boy was I impressed. The prices are mid range which for Big Sur is very reasonable! I will totally come here again on our next visit and definitely telling friends!
