The Black Soul Experience show at The Groove was the highlight of an excellent trip to New York! Our reservations were easily recognized and we were seated right away. The room is small so all seats get good views and sound. My chicken pesto sandwich arrived quickly and was delicious. The fries were thin, hot, and crisp! I washed the meal down with a French 75. Excellent! I remember when Cafe Wha was THE party. Sadly, that isn't true anymore. I'm happy to say that the party is alive and well, and living at the Black Soul Experience at The Groove, led by entertainer extraordinaire Antwon Robinson. He and the band will make you dance 'till you sweat and sing 'till you're hoarse! This show is a great time hearing live music by talented, energetic musicians. They played pop, R&B, soul, rap, go-go, and reggae! Something more special than good music happened. Antwon shouted out Trinity's birthday and congratulated her onstage along with several other birthdays. He asked where people were visiting from. At first I was bored by all of the shoutouts, but over the course of the evening Antwon built community among strangers. As we left we wished each other Happy Birthday and safe travels back to our hometowns. The beauty of community is much needed in these times and I credit Antwon with creating a wave of kindness and human recognition. Go see this show! I highly recommend! read more

Love coming here on a Thursday or Friday to see live music. There is such variety in talent that no matter what you like, there will be a show for you!! Loved it here! I stopped in to see my friend's show. It was on a week night and it wasn't too crowded. We ordered pina coladas and truffle fries while we were here. I highly recommend both of these options. The acoustics inside were great. Even though it's a smaller space, it's a great place to see/hear a show. No matter where you sit, you'd have a great view. It seems like most people end up here while waiting for their show at Comedy Central (as we were as well). Inside is a dark and moody space with live performances. We sat at the bar and had a drink or two. They do offer some great happy hour deals though, but I had a Spicy Margarita ($17), which tasted more sour than spicy to me. The fiance also had a Jack and Coke ($16), which is definitely pricey. My suggestion is to stick to the happy hour menu. read more

Maybe this place is great. I don't drink - so I asked for the food menu. They said I have to order two items -- so I thought to order two sides of fries for $8, totaling $16. That would've been fine --- Then I saw a salmon dish for $26 that looked healthier. They said I'd still have to get a second item with the salmon, even though it was $10 cheaper than two orders of fries. This was confirmed by the manager. This policy infuriated me so I left. I had a great time here! We only stopped in for a short visit, which is the only reason I'm giving it four stars instead of five. I can't swear to the cover charge, but I feel like I gave them a 20 and got two fives back, so 10 dollars on a Tuesday night. Service was great, immediately greeted by the bartender. At first I thought that meant the actual performer, but I think that probably actually means James Brown, and the band was playing James Brown riffs. The band was still awesome though! (even if the saxophone player kept checking her phone). I'm ok with misleading statements and mediocre cocktails because this bar has a dark, low-key vibe, and appears to have great shows. Upcoming shows include tributes to the ladies of Motown, Daria Jones (apparently her shows have no cover, but item minimums). They also have an upcoming Stevie Wonder birthday tribute and a funk night. One night they also had some reggae, they have soul and maybe some folk? AMY WINEHOUSE TRIBUTE NIGHT!?! EASY CALL! Happy 40th queen. Came here STRAIGHT from my 4th ever vocal lesson in which I was attempting to sing "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt. Turns out, that's a really tough song to sing ahahahaha but lowkey I was finding my rhythm by the end of the session, don't sleep. We arrived after paying $27 each for premium seats and were sat 2 tables away from the stage. The Amy Winehouse tribute singer was fantastic, but the real star of the show was Kiki who was doing it ALL. She was on the keys, saxophone, and flute and had the crowd eating out of the palm of her hand on some of those sax solos ahahaha. THE FANS ARE RESTLESS FOR MORE KIKI! I needed to have my authentic NYC experience in a tight dark bar with live music and this place did not disappoint! The drinks were decent and not too shabby on the expected price point. We had just had dinner so we didn't have any food but from what we could tell it looked standard but delicious! Let's get into the vibe though... The vibe was top notch for that true NYC feel! I had an amazing time at Groove! I've now been here twice. The musicians are so talented and are so great at creating an amazing atmosphere with their music. A few notes about the space. You can make a reservation and this is the best so you can get a table. If you don't make a reservation you can walk in and stand in the back and at the bar. There is no cover but you do need to buy two items per person and they include gratuity. Regardless of how the managers have chosen to operate the place, the music is great! Nice bar with live music. Visited casually while we were on MacDougal. Best part is there was no cover charges for this bar. Ordered brooklyn lager and groove colada. The beer but I highly doubt if the colada even had a bit of rum because it was too sweet and I did not quite feel tipsy after two drinks too. I could have simply ordered any virgin drink. Live music was actually good. The band for 5 and 7 pm did not show up but the 9 pm one made it for all. Loved the vibe. They played tradition jazz music which set the bar on fire. This is a live music spot I used to enjoy. I have been here countless times for the band, a drink and some wings. I won't be coming back until they get a new manager. The current manager, the short guy with a mini afro, is extremely rude and abrasive. I came with a friend to have a drink. The hostess informed us there was standing room only and it would be one drink per person, we said no problem. We went to the bar but decided to use the restroom first as we had been walking through the city on a warm day hydrating with water before drinking alcohol. The manager guy blocks the stairs and says you have to order a drink before you can go to the bathroom. I told my friend we need to leave because was rude in assuming we were just in this establishment to use their bathroom. I say why would have a drink first if I need to go the bathroom as I'm heading out the door. He FOLLOWS behind me as and says you weren't going to buy a drink anyway. I told him his attitude is nasty! This is not the first time I encountered him and can only guess he has some unaddressed issues and shouldn't be in customer service. I think I would give Groove a 3.75! Overall it was a really cool experience! There was no cover charge but you had to buy two drinks per person. The drinks were about $14-$18. We didn't get food but they did have it. The performers were great and played a wide variety of songs in different genres. The bartenders were super helpful and quick as well. I have been here a few times and it got worse with each visit. First, the drinks are absolutely awful. The strawberry daiquiri and sangria were so watered down and didn't taste alcoholic. Second, the bouncer thought I was using a fake ID since I look young, but I was older than everyone I was with. He was very rude. Third, I was harassed for not drinking. They said everyone needs to order at least 2 drinks and I said I had to leave soon anyway to catch a train. He came back five minutes later and noticed I hadn't left and demanded I order a drink. I left right away. Fourth, you are not allowed to order from the bar. You must order from a waiter which takes forever and they want higher tips. I've been bringing friends to Groove for over 15 years(even had a party there once), but I won't ever come back after last night. Initially I planned on taking a group of friends to another bar of the block where I've also gone for 15 years. I should have gone there. We got to Grove with an hour left until closing. No charge at door. We heard band play 3 songs before they packed up. 1 Vodka(cheap) on the rocks 1 vodka (cheap) and cranberry 1 Tito's Vodka and tonic 1 tequila and Orange All four drinks came in small glasses. Total cost= $77 (The bartender says "just wanted to let you know, we already included gratuity") with credit card slide asking for amount we wanted to tip. yes. $77 bucks for 4 small watered down drinks that the bartender automatically put his gratuity to with the Credit Card slider asking how much more we wanted to tip . Of course I did t add a tip. After that round of drinks I decided to take my three friends to the bar less than a Minute away with better sounding music coming from the speakers. I bought Two rounds of drinks for my friends, tipped the Bartender and Still paid less than the $77 I paid at Groove for 4 drinks. I'll never go back to Groove again, and will make sure to tell friends about the way Groove does things now. They don't charge you at the door but the Drinks and Automatic Gratuity the Bartender puts on Tab will drain your pockets big time. read more

This place takes advantage of students/young adults. First round, we ordered three mixed drinks. All were filled with syrup and a drop of alcohol. Not worth close to $15 a drink. Next time I will send them back. Second round, we ordered 3 shots of Tito's Vodka. The server asked us if we wanted it "chilled" or "room temperature." We appropriately answered "chilled." Upon drinking all our shots, we were surprised to not feel any "effects" of the Vodka shots and immediately knew it was mostly water (60-75%). As a disgruntled customer, I approached our server/bartender whom immediately said because we asked for our shots "chilled" he added ice in our shots and the ice melted and thus diluted our shots. I've never heard of a bar admit that chilling our shots would mean we would essentially have water mixed with the vodka shots. Additionally, we got ripped off on pricing. I wanted to like this place. This spot caught my attention as I was walking by looking for some good music and a drink or 2. I was seated in a rather crowded spot but accepted as the whole venue was generally crowded. I sat, enjoyed a little of my drink, and listened to the lively band. As soon as the band wrapped up half the people had left so I requested a different seating arrangement so I could stretch a little. I set my drink down on the new table and was looking for my phone in my purse when my drink suddenly spilled on me, almost the entire drink.
