The Waterfront is a shopping center that is located close to the city, contains several dozen businesses, and looks nicer than most other shopping centers. As of the time of this review, options for foods and drinks include a Giant Eagle grocery store, a Fine Wine & Good Spirits, and about 20 restaurants (e.g., Burgatory, Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, Crazy Mason, Eat 'n Park, Jimmy John's, Longhorn, Storming Crab, and Yokoso). I enjoy many of the restaurants. Retail stores present a good number of options for clothing (e.g., Dick's Sporting Goods, LOFT, and Rally House), footwear (e.g., DSW and Shoe Fly), home goods (e.g., Costco, Lowe's, Michael's, Mattress Firm, and Petco), and health and beauty products (e.g., Bath & Body Works, GNC, and Ulta). Current entertainment includes AMC movie theater, Barnes & Noble bookstore, Dave & Buster's, Improv comedy club, Paint Monkey, and Urban Air Adventure Park. Other current businesses are a few banks, a few hotels, some cell-phone stores, a gym, and healthcare providers (e.g., dental and vision). As you can see, this shopping center has numerous options for different types of customers to eat a meal, go shopping, and be entertained. This shopping center does not contain all of my favorite stores, but I like it more than most other shopping centers in the Pittsburgh area. I even have a friend who drives two hours one-way to shop here. read more

Great shopping area and all kinds of food, shops, and stores. Located outside of Pittsburgh this is a newer, modern, trendy outdoor shopping plaza with all sorts of options. It is a cool trendy place and I had fun walking around and taking it all in. I looked it up and it sits on the old U.S. Steel's Homestead Steel Works plant and there are some smokestacks and other artistic elements still visible. I grabbed a coffee at Starbucks, shopped at Ultra Beauty, Target, and at Lunch Mexican restaurant. Would recommend the area. read more

Was in town for a few nights and staff at our hotel recommended checking out the Waterfront. It's great to see towns reinvent themselves. In this case taking an old steel mill location and creating a fun outdoor and shopping area for everyone. The trails along the river are awesome and you wouldn't know what the area had been before redevelopment. There's plenty of restaurants, shopping,hotels and other services. Plenty of free parking is also a nice bonus. I would definitely go on a regular basis if I lived in the area. read more

I love the Waterfront concept and its location is so conducive to my shopping here. There are many restaurants that appeal to me (especially Uno's and TGIF) and some discount type shops I love (Marshall's). However, significant stores and restaurants are leaving. Macy's has already left and Best Buy and Mitchell's Fish Market are on the list to vacate. AMC Lowe's for movies is the biggest draw for me next to restaurants on the GAP rail trail for after biking food. I have to admit that the shops in the courtyard I hardly ever frequent, though I did have occasion to visit Verizon and Xfinity the other day, as well as Loft (which I determined too expensive for what I wanted). Without Macy's I cannot say this is a one-stop shopping experience. read more

Came to PA to see a comedian I really like and decided to do some shopping. This was located right across from our hotel. It's an outdoor mall with various stores filled with the latest fashions, accessories, home dècor and more. The shopping plaza is very walkable with sidewalks for you to get around to the shops. There are several eateries and quick grab snack shops for you to enjoy in the midst of your shopping spree. We traveled here in November so it was colder being on water front, however I imagine the summer time is a great way to spend a day here. There's also a movie theater if you want to take a break from shopping and catch the latest movies. The grounds around this area were very clean and well maintained. We didn't notice any garbage or waste laying around. Also there is plenty of free parking so that's another plus. read more

Like most shopping centers this location is filled with store you'd find in your local hometown, however, what makes this place a bit different is that not only are they all clumped into one location this location is designed to be shopper friendly. The walkways and common area are beautiful and we just happened to be here as they decorated for the holidays. There are hopscotch paths painted for kids to have fun, even and adult or two can join in. Seating for parents to relax while their kids run around in the green grass of the center common area. If I lived closer I'd shop here more frequently. read more

Wow it's so crazy to me to remember when this area converted to what it is today. Though not all that long ago, it's still long enough to make me feel old. The fact that so many pieces of history were left intact make it special. Smoke stacks and other artifacts. Sure it's an outdoor shopping mall with box stores and restaurants as well as housing. Contrary to most people, I cycle to the Waterfront more often than I drive here to visit. My favorite area of the Waterfront is the little-known park next to the Pump House (a small museum), where I like to sit and watch trains cross the bridge over the Mon. My second favorite area is the trail itself, both for its own beauty and the feral cat colony that lives along it. Needless to say, what most people come to the Waterfront for is the shopping, entertainment, and dining options. The Waterfront is the largest retail power center closest to Pittsburgh, and has at least one big box store from every major category. Target, Giant Eagle, Bed, Bath, and Beyond, Petco, Lowe's, etc., etc. In addition to this, there's a gym, a Dave and Buster's, and a Loew's movie theater that are major draws. I tend to get suckered into visiting when I go to see a current movie that isn't playing at the Manor. I've been to D&B's once--while it's fun, be sure to bring your credit card as it also gets pricey fast. For other stores, I tend to go to East Liberty/Shadyside, since it's a lot closer to where I live, and I can satisfy most of my daily needs there. There isn't an enclosed mall here--Robinson or Ross Park are similar places where you can find one of them. As for dining options, I generally pass on most of them, given that they're also mostly chains (TGI's, Uno, Rock Bottom, EnP, etc.). If you must dine at the Waterfront proper, I recommend Burgatory (get the NoWait app to get in line virtually, since the wait can be long and they don't accept reservations). Otherwise, I recommend crossing the RR tracks on Amity St. and checking out some of the local dining options available in Homestead (e.g., Dorothy 6, Blue Dust, Gran Agave). As others have mentioned, aside from its proximity to the East End and sheer size, the Waterfront's major advantage is its copious free parking availability. If you want to hit several big box stores in one trip and the lack of a mall doesn't bother you, it's worth checking out. And if you're like me and are more attracted by trails and parks than stores, the Waterfront is worth checking out for that reason, as well! 3.5 stars. read more

The Waterfront encompasses a vast array of shopping and dining experiences. On one side there is an AMC multiplex theater. They have a "central area" which has Starbucks in the middle of a diamond roundabout with various stores nestled all around it. A lot of the stores you can find elsewhere including some of the restaurants. Outside the central area you can drive to places like Mitchell's, Red Robin, Eat and Park, along with Target and other stores or dining. You need to know your way around to actually figure out that there is a long road that leads from Sandcastle to east Homestead. Nevertheless you can enter Homestead from various points of entry along the way. One of the biggest determent for me is the fact that if you want to enter the Homestead High level bridge then you are forced to turn right towards Squirrel Hill and then find someplace to turn around once you have crossed that bridge. Likewise on as you are coming from Squirrel Hill you can only turn right to ride down into the area. The 2nd is parking. It can be a madhouse if you come at the wrong time. People are always vying for spots but there is a large parking area near PF Changs and it goes as far as Macy's. There are a few stores here that you won't find elsewhere so I go here as I need to. It is decked out very well for the holidays. When this place opened years ago it was the in place to visit with a Dave and Buster's and they even had a diner where Bar Louie now stands. Still it is not going out of your way for unless you have a specific store in mind. read more

This area is slowly sliding into oblivion. It's sad that your anchor type stores have left. American Eagle Outfitters, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, Pac Sun, abercrombie, Cold Stone Creamery all gone. One restaurant space has gone through multiple tenants but cannot seem to land a permanent one. It is convenient to shop there with the strip of stores that vary in variety, Target, Giant Eagle, Dick's Sporting Goods, Petco, Marshall's, Old Navy, Best Buy, Lowe's all in a line, but a big empty two level space on the end. I remember the excitement of the Waterfront when it first opened and everyone flocked to the area to experience the open air shopping. I even remember working there, it was bustling. Now it seems to have fallen on hard times, much like Century III did when it opened. Maybe blame East Liberty's boom for retail or South Side Works. But something needs to be done to bring people back in, several shoe/clothing stores that can be found anywhere in Pittsburgh isn't going to draw as many people as it use to. The parking lots have kind of become an obstacle course to drive through. Resembling a Motor-cross track. The roads aren't much better. If it wasn't for the big box stores, shopping down there wouldn't be worth it. As malls go, this one is not one to visit. Dining however is much better with a pretty good variety from the Pittsburgh staple, Eat N Park to the quick drive thru of McDonald's. Other places to try: Red Robin, TGIFridays, Steak N Shake, Chic-Fil-A, Rock Bottom, Bar Louie, Bravo, P.F. Eh? I don't know what other kind of reaction to have about the Waterfront overall. I've made it clear in other reviews that I absolutely loathe the movie theater located here, so right away the Waterfront's biggest draw for most people is a dud for me. None of the shopping or food really stands out enough to make me want to come out here for a day of shopping, either. Everything here is a chain of some sort - chain restaurants, chain shopping stores, just...chains. All of the little shops that I used to love to duck into are gone. Really, there's nothing here that I can't find at any other shopping area or mall. The Waterfront's just more of a generic and convenient shopping center for the locals now, rather than the place to go with my girlfriends for a day out. It's certainly not going to be my favorite place for a movie night with friends any time soon, either. I will give 3 stars simply for the amazing amount of parking that was built into the place. I admit, that's a nice perk here, and it does keep the place from being rated any lower in my mind. But otherwise, the Waterfront overall is pretty meh, and there's nothing unique to find here. If you live nearby, have fun shopping! If you're like me and you don't live nearby, save yourself some gas money: go to the mall nearest to your house. You're not missing out, trust me. read more

Coming from a city that does not do well with reuse of old sites and structures, I love seeing what can be done with former industrial land. The Waterfront is a great place to visit for a meal, shopping and entertainment. There are a number of chain restaurants (Uno's, PF Changs, Red Robin, Eat N Park, Steak and Shake) and there are speciality restaurants as well (Japanese, a brewery and fish market). You can come for a meal and stay for a comedy show or dueling pianos. They also have a Dave and Busters which is fun for a date night, girls night out, etc. The mix of stores for shopping is interesting. There are some unique finds such as Hometown Sports (which has the typical Pittsburgh sports team merchandise) and a wine store chock full of wine decor, accessories and apparel. You can even sample wines from Heritage Wine Cellars. The rest of the stores are a mix of national chains. Bath and Body Works, Carters, Macty's, Ultima etc. Overall, a great destination for shopping and entertainment, but it is much better for the entertainment than the shopping. read more

As another reviewer mentioned, this former site of the U.S. Steel Homestead Plant has a bloody backstory involving a strike and union-busting orchestrated by industrialist viliain Henry Clay Frick. The ensuing Battle of Homestead would leave 16 dead and 23 injured in the summer of 1892. In the aftermath of the local steel industry's decline, this open-air mall's conception is probably the best thing that could have happened under the circumstances. Being a working-man myself, I'm not bitter about what this area has become. Certain remnants of the plant have been retained and have been integrated respectfully and tastefully with the businesses that populate this superior version of Southside Works or Settler's Ridge. Something had to be done with the dead space after all, and if there was a better idea for it, I'd be curious to know what it was (I once envisioned The Waterfront centering around a large concert venue which in turn would be orbited by restaurants). My only tangible complaint about The Waterfront is that it is chain-dominated with only a handful of independent businesses having staked a claim here. However, I do like that there is a comedy club on the "campus" (I should go sometime), and I rather enjoy its large Loews movie theater. Greenery, benches, olden lamp-posts, brick-laden sidewalks and overall tidiness (I saw absolutely no litter whatsoever) give The Waterfront such a cozy, suburban ambience that for several moments, I thought I was in Sewickley or Mt. Lebanon and forgot that the development is still fairly new (est. 1999). This city-within-a-city is laid out and cared for well -- its architecture impressive, its parking plentiful. If any depressed region deserved an economic boost, it's Homestead. Consider The Waterfront a small spot of sunshine amidst grey clouds that is slowly getting bigger and brighter. I may resent malls, but I don't mind The Waterfront. If nothing else it created some jobs and remains a pleasant destination in which to stroll around or bike to if the weather cooperates. read more

The Waterfront is a great addition to Pittsburgh shopping. There are many nice restaurants and shops and the Loew's theater is a gem. In peak hours it is difficult to park near the boutique stores. Some of the store choices are questionable but other establishments among the best in Pittsburgh. I particularly enjoy the Bar Louie, Barnes and Noble and many of the chain stores in the strip mall. The Giant Eagle location is the best in Pittsburgh. All in all this is a nice Mall with many top notch establishments but others that are mediocre. For people that shop and frequent these establishments it is annoying to have events that block the traffic flow and impede parking. Groups of rude kids from time to time spoil the day. The traffic flow through the circles is slow as people wait and wait and wait for parking spots to open. read more

Incredible accomplishment to bring that scale of development to Homestead...I still can't believe someone convinced so many Big Box retailers to invest millions into an old steel mill with technically the ghetto being right across the tracks..It's been roughly 12 years now and that place is absolutely packed on the weekends, and pulls a very strong crowd during the week also for the "open air shopping mall" In my opinion The Waterfront is an incredible place to spend a Friday or Saturday evening on a date, with many different cuisines to choose from---or to have a few drinks and enjoy a comedy show....The dueling pianos at Sing Sing is always a great time & of course Dave and Busters for the kid in all of us.... If your looking for the frat party atmosphere---GO TO THE SOUTH SIDE--- My only complaint about the Waterfront is not enough local businesses or smaller shops can afford the rent, so hopefully Homestead gets it's act together and cleans up 8th Ave (Kind of like how the South Side did 30 years ago when Carson St was the ghetto) read more

The Waterfront is one of my go-to destinations for dining, shopping, entertainment, and bike riding. There is so much here. Since I travel for work, there's no issue finding a clean restroom or a place to park and have lunch. My favorite establishments include Target, Chik Fil A, Loews movie theater, Bed Bath & Beyond, Old Navy, Marshalls, Yankee Candle, and Charming Charlie to name a few. Trains come through pretty consistently during the day which can temporarily back up traffic on both sides of Amity Street. read more

I am obviously bereft of taste." But that's really mean and I don't want to drink TOO much hater-aide. I have never: waited in line for popcorn at the mega theater, had to 'look' for a parking space in front of the Barnes and Noble, had anything but the best service at all the establishments. Jobs for locals are wonderful! It's just sad that they aren't at small/med sized businesses that are integral parts of the community. But real life kids, it's a mall. Ah, The Waterfront, hated and loved by all in Sq Hill, Greenfield and Homestead. As John B noted, getting there is a total crap shoot. Will it be 10 minutes, or will there be someone actually driving 25 mph over the bridge? Who knows! The Waterfront itself is fine, though overall not very walkable. If you took the bus there and have errands at Macy's and Best Buy, plan on a solid 30 - 45 minutes of walking to get back to the bus stop. There are plenty of stores and restaurants to keep you entertained, though. Some of my favorite stores are Ann Taylor Loft, Macy's, & TJ Maxx; and you can find good food at Gran Agave, Mitchell's and Long Horn. I suppose what I like most about The Waterfront is that once I get there, I can accomplish all my errands in that location. read more

As far as revitalizations go, it is nice, but I wish that they had done more than make it a suburban strip center paired with an exurban cluster of parking lots. Isn't the entire point of Urban Revitalization to bring in a more pedestrian friendly atmosphere? I always thought it was. It is not about creating more sprawl. Yes, the new Boxes that have been plopped down are nice due to the context within; but this is far from something to sings odes of joy about. We don't need any more glorified, "luxury" strip centers. I agree with Jean K's assessment of the situation entirely. This design was just plopped in place and the only local flavor is the bridge that was present. Where is the thought? Where is the design? We can see this Anywhere, USA. Having said that, though, I will return because the Waterfront does house certain big box retailers that you can't find in Pittsburgh Proper. I really wish they had created a less suburban scheme and more contextual and conceptual design. read more

Of course its all chains and it's starting to show its 15 years of age in spots but without the waterfront I think us east lenders would be a lot worse off. I did buy gift cards here a few times.
