SouthSide Works is a mixed-use commercial area that has several office spaces, a town square, about a dozen restaurants, even more retail stores, a sports court, a dog park, riverfront parks and trails, and parking structures. Over the years, I have visited SouthSide Works mostly for its restaurants, which currently include The Cheesecake Factory, Qdoba Mexican Eats, Subway, Levity Brewing Company, Slice on Broadway, Pins Mechanical Company, The Speckled Egg, 1:11, Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, Commonplace Coffee, Taquitos, and Kura Revolving Sushi Bar. I appreciate the nearby parking garages and lots. The parking fees can be a bit high at certain hours, but I have experienced no problems. read more

What happened to the SSW? It used to be a clean and lovely place to hang out. It is now fithly, un kept looking and they put trailers in the town square area and everything seems to be coved in dog pee. How nice I get to sit outside at the cheesecake factory and look at trailers and smell dog pee. read more

Southside works deserves some updated reviews, so here I am . The area suffered a lot of closures a couple years ago but that's okay, because it's back and better than ever (minus the loss of the movie theater--RIP). I'm sure I'm leaving some things out but highlights include: hofbrauhaus German restaurant/brewing, levity brewing truck (located by the dog park and yes you can bring your beer in), shipping container permanent food trucks including delicious tacos and pizza, Cheesecake Factory, REI, pins mechanical (2 floors of fun games for all ages), the speckled egg and commonplace coffee, mix candle co, Kura revolving sushi bar, Jenis ice cream, CoHatch co-working... Not to mention you're steps away from our beautiful river trails. So, next time someone tells you there's "nothing to do" in Southside works, you can remind them they clearly haven't visited in a while ;) read more

This was my 1st visit to Southside Works as Im not from the area. I was primarily there for the Pittsburgh Tour Company butt really enjoyed the whole area. It's great to see what can be done to bring back old neighborhoods or in this case old industrial areas. Cool location to live with all the apartment and condo choices. The trails along the river are awesome. Looks like some of the stores have closed so hopefully this can be addressed. Currently the main options are Cheese Cake Factory, REI and Hofbrauhaus. There are also plenty of food and drink options just up the street on Carson. Definitely a fun area to explore. read more

Growing up in Pittsburgh I remember being so excited when the southside works were in development. However, the southside works is disappointing. While the center fountain area is cute in the summer the surrounding area is haunted with empty store fronts! American Eagle, White House Black Market, H & M, Clair's, BCBG, and Joseph Beth books to name a few. The main attractions are REI, Cheesecake Factory, and the movie theater. While these businesses are great, if your looking to hit up multiple establishments this shopping center probably isn't what your looking for. This space had so much potential but is not living up to it. read more

However, I walk my dog along the lower trail down by the marina and I pick up litter on my way only to find that the employee who empty the trash receptacles deposited the two overflowing cans into the river. Huge disappointment. The bags are still floating near the docks. read more

I remember literally going to SouthSide Works just to watch the original Pittsburgh Cheesecake Factory being built. I was so excited as the next closest location was over 2 hours away in Cleveland. Now it reminds me of a ghost town as a lot of store fronts are closed due to the high rent. Luckily they have places like the movie theater, Shop412, bd's Mongolian Grill, Hofbrauhaus Pittsburgh and McCormick & Schmick's to bring in some much needed life into a outdoor shopping district that without some help could easily be on life support. Parking is a problem too as there is metered parking on the street which is hard to come by as there are lots of apartments and offices in SouthSide Works. There are several nearby parking garages though which are expensive. I really don't see a real reason to come to SouthSide Works other than Shop412 and dining as most everything else here can be found in Ross Park Mall or somewhere on McKnight Road where parking is free and plentiful. Add something unique like a two floor Zara or something that is no where else in Pittsburgh and maybe lower the rent a bit to get those empty store fronts open again! If they're not careful SouthSide Works will be only apartments, offices and restaurants soon and will die a slow death just like Allegheny Center and Century III Mall. read more

What potential. The South Side Works is like that blind date you go on begrudgingly. You have minimal expectations and realize quickly that you're expectations are met but never proved to be wrong. The Works could be great but it just isn't. Originally, I believe this to be the premier place to shop in the city, however I was quickly mistaken by the types of establishments placed in the square. Upscale places are nice, but look around you. You've got drunk college students to your right and West Mifflin to your left I don't think either will be shopping at a Sur La Table anytime soon. I do enjoy having an H&M and Urban Outfitter so close to me, but that's truly about it. Can a local name more than 5 stores in the South Side Works? Probably not because there aren't that many down there. Sadly I'd say if you're looking to shop keep driving until you hit the Waterfront and then cool off with a refreshing dip in the pool at Sandcastle. read more

The only reason I was at this mall is because it's where the kiosk is located to buy tickets for the Pittsburgh tour bus, otherwise it's unlikely I would have come here at all as a tourist in Pittsburgh! It's not a shopping mall in the traditional American sense, cause it's more like a series of 1-storey buildings with tons of shops. The one standout building was this 1920s Art Deco place that is now a cinema theater. The stores themselves are an interesting mix. I saw a lot of chain stores mixed in with high end brands. In the middle of it all was a great green space with kids playing in the water feature and this space also had benches for seating options. It wasn't that busy with cars so that was good however the one disadvantage would be that there weren't public restrooms - I was advised to go to a local eatery which made me feel guilty and I ended up getting coffee I didn't want, just because I needed to use the loo!! This review is mostly for the Claire's and the Cheesecake Factory in the South Side Works. Claire's: This is an intimate and modest Claire's, but kind of charming. It doesn't have quite the selection of a mall based Claire's store, but it also doesn't feel mega cluttered when you walk in. The staff on my 2 visits in here were pleasant, not over-bearing or particularly concerned whether or not I was going to buy things, which is refreshing. I like this store far better than the mall locations. I feel like I can walk around looking at cheap cutesy jewelry without being stared at by a hoarde of 13-year-old girls. The Cheesecake Factory: It's a nice location, and it kind of feels like a palace inside. I've had very nice waitresses here and kind of neglectful, rude waitresses here; it all depends on when you go. Obviously going during peak hours means waitresses are going to be a bit over-loaded. the food is always on point though, which is the most important part! read more

I'm not sure exactly where SouthSide Works ends and South Side begins, so this review is about the new-build-stuff. That said, it's all chains. Sure, I like Cheesecake Factory. I love REI. But this movement is just not cohesive, and comes off as forced, or not done, or something I just don't see. There's huge potential. The location is great. They just need more stuff. read more

While I have found parking at times on Carson I usually end up just going to one of the parking lots named after something to do with steel making and I never forget to "take my ticket with me". This is a cool outdoor kind of shopping place not in the traditional sense like Waterfront but more of a community type residential/office/shopping/eating sort of community not far from the Carson Southside area in fact I guess it is incorporated into it sort of. Forgive me and my ignorance of all things Pittsburgh since I'm not a resident, just a fan that loves going to Pittsburgh because it is a very wonderful place to visit and enjoy the many things that make this city and Southside works is one of those places. There are big stores here like H&M, Forever21, and smaller stores like Sur La Table and Puma. To me it seems like the place really centers around the Cheesecake Factory being in the middle by the square it sort of stands out. I usually stop in to Caribou to pick up coffee for my friend as well. I've always wanted to go to Hofbrauhaus only because I'm very interested in the beer. There's a lot of places to eat here from fast food to places to drink too. I usually visit the Works when in town because it's a nice place. read more

Southside Works is the collective area of several establishments and around a lawn area. This past summer I attended the Pittsburgher! A burger festival held in Southside Works. I'm no stranger to eating more than the average person, but this event beat me down. It's was a combination of eating a lot this weekend. Drinking prior and during the event. Letting my stomach settle. And my biggest enemy of all the summer heat and sun. Still it was a good time. We arrived and started ordering a couple of beers from the tents. Then started making our rounds. I can consume a lot but as anyone knows, the more you wait between eating the harder it is to continue. You can eat a lot more without taking breaks. My friend didn't want to do so. So I obliged. Mistake on my part. There were some real scrumptious delights here. From burgers with lobster, to burgers done with general tsao's twist, one with gumbo one top, to others that were just really well made burgers. As I said the heat and sun was my biggest enemy. If I could offer advice I'd say they should give tents next year for the guests. If not, bring an umbrella to chill in. I was dying and that made it much harder to enjoy the food. I only got up to burger number seven. Didn't get to try the last five. I dishonored myself. Afterwards we decided to walk back to the hotel. We needed that walk. I may or may have thrown up along the way. I'm telling ya man, that heat was brutal. If you're around for this event next summer, sign up. Just make sure to plan accordingly. read more

Dear South Side Works, You just keep sinking lower and lower into the black hole of empty store fronts! Our first and ONLY Steve Madden store in the Pittsburgh area, CLOSED. Now I see Nine West has shut their doors too. And Tusca....looked pretty closed for biznas (must have been those pesky rat droppings). Geez, get your act together! They're definitely not doing something right. Will it be redeemed somehow or will it just fade into empty storefront oblivion? The original South Side, on Carson St. is still hustlin' and bustlin' with cool restaurants, unique shops and bars. I say they just bulldoze the works and keep with the original Carson St theme! Easy....right?! The ONLY hope I see at this point is the LA Fitness coming into the old Joseph Beth store in December. As a Mt. W resident, this is awesome news considering there's no close gyms with easy parking. We'll see though...can a gym solve all of SSW problems? Kinda doubt it. read more

Who the hell shoehorned Epcot Center into the formerly scrappy, character-laden South Side? Personally, aside from their first-rate movie theater (which I have reviewed), I've never been comfortable with South Side Works, in theory and practice. It just doesn't feel as if it belongs where it is. SSW is a suburban strip mall/shopping center that teleported to Beverly Hills, got a gaudy makeover, missed Fox Chapel by a few miles, and landed in Sahs Syde instead. Expensive chains I have little desire to shop or eat in litter this artificial sub-neighborhood like a gaggle of mean, popular, pampered seniors in a high school hallway. Whenever I have walked around SSW, I felt like it was all temporary, like a movie set, like it would all be gone a month later. I wish someone would in fact pack it all up and take it. Besides, why wander around SSW when a Carson Street promenade is blocks away and has so much more substance? Why do many people oppose gentrification with a passion? South Side Works is just one of many reasons. It's overdone and just doesn't work. read more

My back yard..... literally. I come here often, mostly just for a walk whether it's just myself or more recently my dog tags along since we recently just got her. I don't normally shop here because I do like malls.. I get more in the shopping mood. They have an American Eagle, Aerie, Claire's, forever 21, REI (it has a climbing wall.. cool!), Urban Outfitters.. There are more I just can't think right now. Restaurants include BD's Mongolian grill, Hofbrahaus (!!!), McCormick & Schmicks, cheesecake factory, coffee shop, yogurt shop, Sake plus a few others I'm also forgetting. I love heading down to the park in the summer and walking by the giant chess board. The movie theater is my favorite part of the Works. We come to south side works basically to go on a little walk and see what's going on. It's a little different scenery than the normal e. carson street. read more

I love visiting this area in the summer. There's a Cheesecake Factory with a small park. In the summer bands play there. There a movie theater and some clothing stores. There are others restaurants like the Irish Claddagh, the German Hofbraus, a Mongolian barbecue, A Tapas bar, LA Fitness, Rei, a coffee shop and more around the corner. They also have a marina and walkway by the water and the rest are upscale condos and hotels. Definitely a must see! read more

Coming from Canada we researched and found this cool outdoor mall that looked like a great place to go. Its beautiful and the concept is great, they just need to fill it with more retailers, or parks, or other things to do. The Cheesecake Factory is the highlight and its worth checking it out to say you have been there, but it needs some improvements to keep people down there longer. read more

SouthSide Works - Shopping Centers Near Me - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

When my mother and I both have a day off, the SouthSide Works is also up top of our places to go list. They have a large variety of stores that her and I both can enjoy: Sur La Table, Urban Outfitters, H&M, 412.. etc. Also, the dining here is pretty hip and exciting. Yes, the restaurants are fancier and mostly chain-like, but I do enjoy the entertainment that is the Hofbrauhaus and the delicious desserts and full menu that are the Cheesecake Factory. If you have a free day, and the weather is nice, you should come check this center out. It is pretty beautiful. read more

SouthSide Works has unfortunately suffered from quite a bit of turnover lately, but it still retains its pleasant atmosphere. Err.. just not so much in the winter doldrum months. You know - those cold and blustery months that set in after Christmas is over and before the last snow pile has melted. Still, it can be an okay place to hang out. The movie theater is great, and the chain restaurants in the immediate area are nothing to complain about. I'd love to see some local stores or boutiques to take hold, but the rent is probably too high for that. Plus, most of the local color is more permanently ensconced a bit farther west down Carson Street. Enjoy it for what it is: a few blocks of gentrified , non-threatening shopping and dining that is more vomit-free, urine-free and drunk-free than the rest of the Southside. read more

This place would be a lot more vibrant and useful if parking were free or somehow comped. During its beginning a lot of the new store front attracted outsiders as we as local SS residents to walk the area, shop at the stores, and eat at the restaurants. Now ... it just doesn't seem to get over a rather nasty case of attrition. There's chains, chains, and more chains. I do highly recommend hitting places for happy hour specials, that's is something they do get right in the SSW. read more

Ooooh! I read several reviews, enough to know this place must have problems keeping businesses and some don't like the carnival-like atmosphere. Thought I should put in my 2 cents here, I'm new to Pittsburgh from Nashua, NH -- all of 2 months and I have to say that today, after landing in the SouthSide Works complex, I was ecstatic! I had found Nirvana! Please understand from my point of view. Been here 2 months as I said and live and work far away from any hub-bub or any simulation of activity (live in Penn Hills which I find pleasant enough) and work in Vandergrift. So surely you can understand my absolute delight by the whole South Side Flats neighborhood -- a mixture of new and old, activity galore, actual, real stores other than dollar stores and auto parts stores where I could purchase a trendy outfit for the nightclub or rough and tumble apparel for hiking or one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces, or gadgets for the kitchen that are quite fun and spontaneous. All this AND I can walk nearby to the local Goodwill store to see if I can find a treasure there, too. So, yes, yes, yes, count me in as a fan of SouthSide Works and its total concept that other downtowns are trying to accomplish -- a mixture of living/working/playing all at one's fingertips (or rather footsteps). I'm in love, I say. I can't take much more of the rural fare east of downtown Pittsburgh offers. Give me SouthSide Works and more of it! I think I'm gonna consider moving here and deal with an hour commute. That's how much I love it. Something else that was noteworthy? The entire area was clean and unlittered! South side works is great it's like the waterfront in a way but small skill. They have shopping stores, a few great places to eat, a movie theater. In the summer months when I've been here a few times they always have awesome performances going on like bands or stand up, clowns. It's a great place to go if your looking for something to do for a few hours! The only bad thing I can really say is parking is absolutely horrible and so hard to find somewhere close that's convenient. read more

I'm definitely partial to South Side Works -- I have been working in one of the office buildings here for 2 1/2 years -- but it's sad to hear about the shops that were once here and to see the shops that are continuing to close. Since I started working here, Nine West, Steve Madden, Joseph Beth Booksellers, and Tusca (wine and tapas restaurant) have closed. All of these closures were a blow to me. Tusca was an office happy hour favorite, and Joseph Beth Booksellers was a fantastic place to browse and pick up a last minute greeting card or present. I also like both Nine West and Steve Madden shoes, so having both of those shoe stores closing within months of one another was a major disappointment. I like getting out and about in SSW once or twice each week during my lunch breaks. They have three hot spot restaurants frequented by a lot of local employees - Qdoba, Pita Pit, and Subway, but I'm personally not a fan of any of these options. My favorite lunch spot is The Cheesecake Factory. I also like going to Claddagh and Hofbrauhaus for a drink and appetizer after work. Of course, SSW does still have a few shops left. REI is fantastic for winter apparel and for the outdoor enthusiast. I personally like shopping at Aerie, Urban Outfitters, and Forever XXI. This Aerie store is one of three full-sized stores in the city, with the other locations being Robinson and South Hills Village. I have been most impressed with the staff at this location compared to the service I've received in the other stores. I believe it's also the largest store of the three. This Urban Outfitters also seems to be a pretty large store. They do a good job of greeting customers while I'm normally ignored in other Urban Outfitters. Though this Forever XXI is on the small side, I always have good luck finding product here, while quickly becoming overwhelmed in huge locations while the one in Ross Park. Though a random spot for this store in my opinion, I have also grown to love Sur La Table. Yes, they're pricey, but they have great products that you can't find anywhere else. Overall, I enjoy SSW and am happy to work within walking distance of all of these shops and restaurants. However, if I didn't work here and have free parking at any time, I would be more likely to only rate this shopping area only 3 stars. read more

Dear Soffer Organization: When I was moving back to Pittsburgh and contacted your leasing department about the Flats at Southside Works, I could not even get a call back. Only when I called and told someone else that I had not yet gotten a call back after multiple calls and emails, did I get some sort of attention and was not treated so nicely (their marketing person pretty much said the spots are a hot commodity and when something pops up, they would contact me). Then 8 months later rolls around and I am living very nearby at the Carson St Commons, and something pops up... I am in the middle of determining if I am staying where I am at in a few months or going to move. I get an email from this same person at The Flats at SS Works... "this unit will be available closer to October but if you want it, you have until 5pm today".... UM..... NO THANKS! Your lack of customer service and generally business congeniality leaves me thinking living there would not be a good experience. I took my chances and stayed put and am happy with my choice as I get the basic amenities of SS Works being right there, and I have a much better parking situation and a more attentive office/staff at the complex. Despite the idea of SS Works being a great one, they need more tenants in there... STAT. I do not care if they are restaurants, shops, or whatever, but the vacant storefronts are depressing. The Cheesecake Factory is ALWAYS jamming though... so can you imagine that if we had a few additional yummy places in there? It could definitely becoming a more viable venue for shopping, movies, dining, etc. I think the idea of SS Works is great, we just need more places in there and if it means lessening the rents a tad, it should be done. The Steel City Mongolian BBQ place will be opening in Feb, but based on previous experience in another market, I do not see this bringing more life to the SS Works... but I wish it would. I dream of a PF Changs, or some other establishments like that coming there... or even an upscale grocer (Market District would be awesome, just saying). A lot of people reside at that end of Carson Street, and it would be nice to maximize the opportunities of this great space. With all of the closings in there, something needs to be done! read more

I remember many moons ago when the space that is now Southside Works was just fenced off ruble and debris. I would ride past it day and day out on my trip to Downtown. All I can say is wow, why can't more of our neighborhoods be developed so completely 2 thumbs up to Southside Works everything is awesome. read more

I can't give an overdeveloped new area such as this more than 3 stars. I cringe when I see a Cheesecake Factory plopped into the middle of such a city with incredible restaurants. Most of the shops and restaurants here are commercialized chains that should be found in suburbia. That being said, I can't say no to the theater, which has some great deals for college students in particular. I do enjoy some Urban and REI as well. Parking is not fun- therefore I would recommend just parking on the other side of Carson and walking over rather than the deck. read more

Southside Works Tunnel Apartments . Apartment building is not well managed .Have had to have them my fix rent for six Months in a row. They keep overcharging by $200. Doesn't faze them.Been there since November there have been at least six fire alarms in middle of night.The night man Mark is the best about building very helpful.The other staff seems not to care the only time I've seen them being helpful was when corporate was here a month ago. They made sure the whole building was spotless even trimmed shrubs.They act like there being helpful but nothing is ever done when you ask for help.The best thing about building is the outside area with pool.It's is what draws you in. read more

I would not recommend going to the cinemas at the South Side Works. My son went there this evening with 3 of his friends, choose to sit in the back row, as my family & I always do regardless if the cinema is full or not, there were several seats between the last child in his group & the next patron in another group, however due to some kids acting up in that row the whole row got ejected.. EVERY PATRON IN THAT BACK ROW WERE BLACK!!! The movie was only 30 min in I might add.. When my son & his friends took their seat, the movie hadn't even started yet, his friend pulled out his phone to text his mother to let her know he was there & safe, to only have the manager come directly up to him & rudely tell him to put his phone away.. after speaking to both managers on duty, it was confirmed that every patron in that back row was black & both police officers, 2 security guards & both managers were white.. the manager further stated she knew they all knew each other.. how would she know that? This does not sit well, I will NEVER go to that theater EVER & I WILL spread the word to everyone that will listen.. bottom line, my son was ejected from the cinema because of the color of his skin!! read more
