Very disappointing experience. We waited in line for over 45 minutes while staff kept saying the venue was at "max capacity," yet people who weren't even in line were being let in ahead of us. When the concern was brought up, the manager was dismissive and took no accountability. Poor crowd management and unprofessional handling of the situation. I have a fave booth and it's the corner under the TV speakers. Lol the interior decor is a little mysterious and intimate which I personally like. They also have an outdoor patio on the front & side of the restaurant for those hot sunny days. We really enjoy their taco Tuesdays & Thursday $9.95 burger days with purchase of a drink. Definitely amazing deals as you get quite a bit of food for the price. Their fish tacos has got to be one of fave and their classic burger is your classic American style burger. Ok let me start off by saying that the waverley has been a tried and trusted establishment over the years for a good time, if anyone knows Elgin street they know it's a fun place to be on a Saturday night so I would like my review to be caveated with that statement. But DO NOT EAT HERE. I have not been that disappointed by a meal in a very long time. I ordered the roasted red pepper hummus which was described to come with charred cauliflower, zucchini relish, crispy pitas, roasted chickpeas and grilled bread. As you can see from the pictures, that is not what I received. It was absolutely disgusting and weirdly wet?? I politely sent it back and the server was happy to oblige and even came back to tell me the staff tried it and agreed it was bad. What kind of a restaurant serves food that even the staff agree is terrible? I don't know what happened but the food did not used to be this bad. Considering the prices they are charging for such mediocre dishes it is a little unsettling. They were kind enough to comp my entire bill but needless to say I will never be going there again unless it's for tequila shots. read more

Looking for a nice dinner out near my wife's apartment, the Waverley came to mind when doing some research, having walked by it a few times on Elgin. When we strolled in on a Tuesday evening, it was pretty quiet with just a couple other tables occupied. Having our run of the place, we sat in one of their half-moon booths, which seemed quite cozy. The restaurant has a speakeasy vibe, with the cool wallpaper, funky metal frame light fixtures with Edison bulbs and the black and red palette. A couple things in the dining area seemed a little odd though, like a TV screen and what appeared to be a DJ booth, although I'm not sure where a dance floor would go in this place. Before ordering food, we got some drinks off their sizable drink menu. Seeing the whiskey sour there made it an easy choice. The drink had a nice egg white foam, but was unfortunately lacking on the sour. The menu had several interesting options, but I ended up going with the duck confit, and a house salad to start. I just can't say "no" to some mallard! Our salads came quickly, and were on the large side of the spectrum. Comprised of greens, julienned apple, radish and a tangy citrus vinaigrette, it was a nice start to the meal. Simple and tasty, these veggies did their job of making me feel less guilty about the confit duck that was to come. The duck came in a disproportionately large bowl, but what was inside was great. The Frenched duck drumstick and thigh were tender and moist, with all the rich duck flavour that you would expect. The rest of the dish balanced the duck nicely; the apple compote and its apple pie-like flavour added some seasonal sweetness, and the golden beets gave just a hint of tartness. I always enjoy some polenta, and this was no different, if not as memorable as the rest of the meal. Service was good, and you could tell our poor waitress wanted to keep us around for another drink or dessert on a slow night, but we were full and weren't feeling like staying out very late. The Waverley may not be uttered in the same breath as some of the city's more chic restaurants, but it was a solid meal in a nice atmosphere, and you can't ask for much more than that! read more

The Waverly A friend of mine told me about ladies night on Thursdays which consists of 1/2 price appetizers and $5 prosecco, so I decided to try it out! The interiors are really dark, even with the shades on the windows pulled up. It was quite cold inside and it was a rainy day, so bring a sweater to keep warm! What I tried: - Charcuterie board: For $21 at regular price, I was expecting more. There were 3 small wedges of cheese, and only 2 types of meat (literally 1 slice of sausage and 2 slices of a thicker prosciutto-like meat). The toasts were also REALLY hard...I mean toasts can be crunchy but BOTH of us had difficulty biting it. They should add more meat and cheese to the board. - Poutine: WAY too salty...this was the only dish that I didn't finish. Not enough curds. But the fries were thick cut which I prefer! - Mussels: the creamy sauce that went with them was amazing! I wanted to get bread and just mop it up, but it didn't come with any. The sauce is a bit thin, so I kept having to spoon it over the mussels. Probably my favourite dish out of the 4. - Calamari: although the sauce was nicely lemony and went well with the calamari, the batter got soft quickly and the calamari itself was quite chewy. Service was slow at first for the server to get to our table, but food came out in a reasonable amount of time. I would recommend the mussels and calamari, but not the poutine or charcuterie. Apparently their burgers are really good since they are made with chuck meat, so I will try that next time! Drinks are also supposed to be good based on reviews, but I only tried the prosecco. Overall, the apps are a hit or miss, so I guess stick with the burgers and drinks! read more

Just had breakfast here Sunday morning. Food was cold. The hash tasteless and unseasoned. The potatoes felt like they came from a frozen bag. Way too oily. The coffee was a positive. The cheesesteak Benny was cooked well done (steak) and served cold. Just not pleasant. For 41 dollars I expect hot, tasty and memorable. Not dull, cold and drab. My wife had the salmon Croque Madame and it was cold and the bread tastes stale and overly sweet. One bit of the potatoes and she said "these are going to make me sick". BEWARE! Went here this past weekend and all though the bar was nice and drinks were good I was not impressed with my first experience. I arrived around 10:45pm with a group of about 6 and still had one more arriving later. At around 11:15pm the last member of our group showed up and got in the line that was only a handful people deep and was informed that the line was cut off for the line. She waited in hopes of someone leaving that she would be able to slide in. Inside we try talking to the very rude and cold bouncers when we saw people leave but we're given the same answer that the line was cut off for the night. Now this would have been fine if the line was truly cut off but my friend outside witnessed 20-30 people be let in ahead of her because "they knew a staff member inside" while she was continuously told it was full for the night or that bylaw had come in and gave them a warning. When my friend even mentioned to the bouncer that she had just gotten off work at a different establishment and understood it was busy; the bouncer rudely told her "she should do a better job planning her nights". I would strongly suggested taking your business elsewhere when thinking about this establishment. They care more about "their friends" getting in who are probably getting discounts than actually let in fully paying customers. The bouncers are extremely rude and judgmental and seem to think they have the power to speak to potential customers in a condescending tone. I for one will not be returning to the establishment purely for the reason of house they treat customers who aren't their friends. I was walking Elgin street looking for a place to invite me in. The Waverley won this night. The host was nice and recommended the lobster macaroni & cheese to me along with a drink. I got neither. Lol. The drinks were good and the bartender was friendly. He made good conversation and made me feel welcome. I had 2 different flavors of their wings along with the Black & Blue Burger. I came here last night (Saturday night at midnight) so like expected it was jumping and busy , awesome music at a good volume , drinks took awhile but like I said Saturday night that's expected. My lack of 5 stars is 110% this places bathroom, there are only 2 very very small stalls and it's probably +40 in there !!! If you're going to have such a high capacity put money into your gross bathroom. My friend and I stopped in for a drink after hearing so much about this place. I really like the ambience and decor, and the food menu looked pretty amazing. I felt underdressed, actually - it seems like a lot of white collar folks head there after work. The menu items are pretty expensive. I opted to get the drink special of the day, so my bill was very cheap, but my friend's mojito was $14. I know The Waverley refers to itself as a "dive bar" but those prices ain't divey! Was here on vacation and chose this place. I had the 1/4 chicken and was very happy with it. It was presented really nicely -- I thought it would just be chicken on a plate. The chicken was juicy and also had some nice crisp on the skin. The potatoes and corn on the cob with it were also very good. Something was definitely off that night. I cannot stress enough how horrible this was, we will definitely not be going back. I went with some friends for a girls night, with the intention of having a blast. We sat down and ordered drinks, which took a good ten minutes to arrive. We weren't very concerned. We ordered our mains, drinks were flowing. Upon receiving our mains, the Lobster Mac and Cheese was exceedingly bland with a weird tomato relish that threw off the whole dish. We sent it back and replaced it with gnocchi. A steak was ordered with goat cheese on top no goat cheese to be found. The worst of it was the dessert, a chocolate creme brulee. Upon cracking into it the most hideous scent of mold escaped from the dish. It was absolutely vile. We obviously sent it back, and received an explanation that the chocolate was just very 'aromatic'. I call BS. We also ordered two rounds of 'swedish berry' shots, but the first round was yellow, the second round was pink. What was going I do not know. When I told this to the bartender he tasted a strawful of the drink, asserted it was tonic (it was not) and proceeded to mansplain to me what tonic water tastes like?!?! Like obviously I know what it tastes like, I ordered it. Hella patronizing. Check out this bar if you're looking for a sausage party where most of the men are ~40 but trying SO hard to relive their 20s. The saving grace of the night was the DJ who, despite fairly crunchy transitions, was serving all the hits. I often drop in at this place later in the evening, the bartenders are friendly and prompt. The cocktails are great as well. As for dinner service, I do not recommend. Sat inside, the restaurant itself is very pleasant but the music is absolutely horrendous. I'm pretty sure Linkin Park and P.O.D came on, felt like a 14 year old from the 90's was leading the playlist. Appetizer was great but the mains were not great. I had a chicken burger and the bun was soaked, took 10 minutes to get a new bun. Another person at my table had a burger as well by waitress didn't check to see if hers was okay. The first time was for lunch and the food and service was good. The second time the manager said our food took too long so our drinks would be free. i said, i hadn't noticed and it was ok. He replied, that it wasn't acceptable to him. After mediocre food the bartender charged us for the drinks, and when we mentioned that they were supposed to be on the house, he replied very snidely that he had no idea why that would be. 5 of us went for dinner to try this place out on March 8th. The hand crafted drinks were great, I had a Negroni and an old fashioned. Service was pretty good. But then I ordered the Surf and Turf. I asked for my steak Medium rare and it was well done. I sent it back and was brought another one. This time it was Medium well. I didn't bother to send it back a third time as my friends already finished their meals before I got my second steak. How does a chef not know how to cook a steak? Twice?! My girlfriend had the fish and chips and the fish was pretty greasy and dripping with oil, fries were under cooked. Another friend also had the steak and ordered medium rare and his was well done and didn't bother to send it back and didn't even eat it. To my surprise the server didn't ask why he didn't eat his steak but I think he knew why. One of our other friends had a burger and she said it was great! But fries undercooked. But seriously, if a restaurant cant cook a burger you have bigger issues. My friends then waited for me to finish my meal before ordering desert (Kind of awkward and rushed as I do blame the Chef for making this experience ruined). We then ordered desert, 2 ordered the crème brulee because the server said there were only two left. How is this? Our reso was at 7pm on a Thursday and they only had two crème Brulee? The restaurant was only a quarter full. My girlfriend ordered the chocolate cake. When the deserts came my friends were disappointed that the crème brulee was ice cold running and the sugar on top was still granulated and not even torched. Crème brulee is suppose to crack when the spoon dives in and be warm. My girlfriends chocolate cake never came. The when we asked about the cake they had forgot so they then gave her the cake no charge(Nice). We all agreed that we would not return to the Waverly again in the future.
