I asked about the Parisian sandwich (all the sandwiches are pre made and disayed in the case), to be sure Jambon de Paris was used. The staff had NO clue what I was talking about, and rudely proclaimed "it's ham". Yes, I am aware its ham, but if it is not Jambon de Paris I want to know so I can chose something else. Luckily, the manager or owner overheard and confirmed it was Jambon de Paris. Staff began ringing my items when I indicated that I still wanted 2 more items. Sigh and eyeroll. There was no one else in line or waiting to order. All items were expensive and no receipt was provided which I did not realize till I got home. The sandwich was good, but needed more Jambon de Paris. The tarragon mustard gave a nice flavor, while the butter provided a smooth texture to compliment the crunchiness of the bread. The sourdough bread and the filled croissants were both delicious, but also quite pricey. Sandwiches are not made or order, there is no pricing on many of the items that I could see, this is a location with lots of traffic and not much parking. On top of all of that, feeling rushed and completely disrespected as a paying customer doesn't make me want to return or recommend. You only get one chance to make a good first impression.

2/5 Stars This review pains me to write because the food at The Whelk was genuinely excellent. The kitchen deserves praise. Unfortunately, the service experience was so disappointing that it completely overshadowed the meal. We asked to be seated outside on a brutally hot day that felt close to 100 degrees in direct sunlight. We politely asked if the umbrella could be adjusted slightly so our children wouldn't be sitting directly in the sun. The answer was simply no, with no attempt to accommodate us or offer alternatives. Watching your kids bake in the heat while staff seem completely indifferent is not exactly hospitality. Things only became more frustrating from there. We ordered lemonade for the children and asked if a few strawberries could be dropped in for flavor. Again, a flat refusal. Not because they were out of strawberries, not because there was some allergy concern, simply because they "couldn't." For a restaurant charging roughly $40 per entrée, this level of rigidity is baffling. Small requests that cost virtually nothing should be opportunities to create a memorable guest experience, not reasons to say no. And the hits just keep on coming. We ordered a cheeseburger for the kids and they forgot the cheese. When we pointed it out, they took the same burger back to the kitchen and returned it with what appeared to be reheated cheese, rather than preparing a fresh one. The final straw was when my wife ordered the $36 pasta primavera and asked to add shrimp, fully expecting and willing to pay an upcharge. We were told that they do not add proteins to their pasta dishes. That is honestly one of the most perplexing restaurant policies I've encountered. A restaurant should be in the business of accommodating reasonable guest preferences, especially at these prices. The overwhelming theme of the afternoon was simply this: "No." No flexibility. No accommodation. No effort. It's a real shame because the food was very good and we would have happily become repeat customers. Instead, we left feeling unwelcome and frustrated. Great restaurants are not defined solely by their food; they are defined by hospitality. Unfortunately, The Whelk failed miserably in that department. Excellent food. Abysmal service. If anyone in town starts bending your ear about how they miss DeRosas, the old school red sauce joint which was demo-ed to make way for the development that now houses The Whelk, one bite of Chef Taibe's food will stop them in their tracks. I love Le Farm, Bill Taibe's other venture in town, so it is no surprise I love The Whelk, too. Unlike Le Farm, the Whelk is darker, with a popular bar, a louder buzz, and a bent toward fish. It is the bistro to Le Farm's Cafe. Adventurous eating is rewarded, and the food is wonderful. I can't say enough about the food, so I will spare you and say only that it is world class. It is 4 stars ONLY in comparison to Le Farm, which doesn't feel so rushed and noisy. No surprise, then, that the place is slammed most nights (it is closed Sundays), which can lead to some confusion in the staff, and frustration amongst patrons. Waiting at the bar can be deeply unsatisfying, since it appears to be held up by regulars who don't appear to have homes. There are two outside tables that seem to turn over with a bit more regularity. Note there is no view of the river, which is a shame, but par for the course in town, where water views are rare (Splash, River House Bistro, and Positano). Lately the place has developed into a bit of a scene. The Whelk is, after all, walking distance to the train station, and just off I-95, so it draws quite a crowd. That is good and bad. The bar scene, and communal table scene, seems to be a mix of older singles and girls on gab-dates, which is fun if you are in that crowd, and annoying if you aren't. About the only substantive criticism I can mount is that the menu is nearly indecipherable. Not in content, but in organization. That is, it has none. Or none that I can figure out. No "Appetizers / Entrees", no "Starters/Firsts", no "Tapas/Mains", nothing that indicates the relative size or heartiness of a preparation. It's like the Barnes Collection of food - organized solely according to the owner's whimsy, and presented without explanation. The waitstaff has, on a few occaisions, seemed as confused as we were, which didn't help matters. This drives my wife mad, but I find it hard to complain when everything you order is so good. read more

Let's chalk it up to an off night. Have enjoyed many dinners at Whelk, last night was off in every way. Ordered the usual faves, the rice balls came out way too fast and were not hot, barely warm. Clearly was a re-heated dish (barely). I dream about the fondue, yet last night it was just average. It was served with a spoon (so it can be enjoyed family style according to our server) yet half of it wound up staying on my plate since it can be consumed with a fork. I asked the server if there was something missing (the term fondue made me thing there was something to dip) but she said a fork was the proper implement. Judging by the puddle left on my plate, I think not. Fried chix sandwich was as good as ever. Blackened fish sandwich was a tiny piece of fish (good tho) and an overpowering cold slaw (in amount and flavor). I have never thought twice about the bill at the end of a meal at Whelk, it is usually worth the price. Not last night. My husband and I recently celebrated our wedding anniversary here, and it was one of the best meals we ever had! Seafood is not my favorite, but my husband loves it; I heard great things about The Whelk, so decided to go there. We had 5 small plates, all that had seafood, and I absolutely loved it! Our entrees were also delicious and don't even get me started on the dessert. Cookies and Milk was to die for, the presentation was very nostalgic and playful. I have nothing bad to say about The Whelk except I don't make enough money to go here more than once a quarter. Not that it's so expensive but I have kids, for crying out loud. Do you know how much food my kids eat on a weekly basis? TONS. Anyway, The Whelk is great. It is somewhat loud when it is busy but if you don't like the noise a crowded restaurant produces then maybe you should eat in your kitchen? Alone? And maybe you should be eating a TV dinner because you are alone and in your kitchen so why would you cook a big meal to eat alone? That's wasteful! She was so inattentive that we had to ask the other waiter for things we needed. He was engaging, checked on us and we even chatted about his Jordanian heritage and my trip there back in December. Our actual waitress, however, checked on the table next to us 6 times (yes I counted) in between her checking on us. Even when I ordered a mocktail, I guess they didn't have the one I wanted so she brought me an entirely different drink without asking me. Then got upset when I didn't want it. The absolute audacity. As far as the food, we got the crab cake, lamb, whipped mashed potatoes and the bread. The food was good but the bread took it to another level. It should have been complimentary though but that's neither here nor there. Overall, loved the experience but wish we had another waitress. She didn't even acknowledge my friend's birthday. Sigh.

I got the Cioppino for my entree. Not much going on with the dish. Had a few mussels, maybe 4 SMALL pieces of chorizo chopped up, maybe 4 SMALL pieces of shrimp chopped up, a few slices of potato, and a piece of Monkfish on top. It's almost like they ran out of seafood!! They didn't skimp on onion though. The dish was swimming in flakes and flakes of onion. I can't really have onion so I was piling the onions on the side of my plate. They were excessive. There wasn't much there for $40. My boyfriend got the salmon per usual with the cauliflower risotto. He enjoyed. Not much to report there. I have heard good things about L'escale (restaurant at Delamar in Greenwich) so still went to check that out. Maybe it's just an Artisan thing I don't care for. We shall see. Parking is tricky here. Both times we got lucky and found a spot somewhat near the front, otherwise not sure where else you park.

Food was delicious with great portions. They offer Sunday brunch, however you have the option to order from their standard menu. My party ordered the eggs Benedict, the tuna bowl, and the California chicken wrap. Key things of note: The amount of parking available for the restaurant. Aside from its own lot to the side, there is an additional lot right in front with parking dedicated to the restaurant and gym next door. The restaurant is conveniently located right off the exit from i95, making it easy to find and a reliable place to stop and eat without going too out of the way. And my wife and I felt good about our dishes too: the ahi tuna sushi bowl and the miso salmon. All tasty and reliably good. Massive portions. We had to take some home. The ambiance is nice. The bar had the world Cup games on and the place was buzzing. The patio was filled to the brim too. All in all, a good little spot in Southport.

And I've been very happy with the service - on our first visit during summer we had an outdoor reservation, shortly after sitting down it became too buggy and they happily found us a spot inside, we really appreciated that. Just don't be late as they have a 5 minute grace period and you'll be charged per person for a missed reservation.
