You can never go wrong here! I've been going to The Whining Pig (Downtown Phoenix) since I moved here from NYC in 2021, and at this point it's basically part of my personality. This is my at-least-once-a-month spot for catching up with friends, popping in solo, or grabbing a "just one drink" that may or may not turn into two. The beer selection is massive, borderline intimidating, and the wine list rotates often, which I love. Pro tip: don't play beer roulette unless you enjoy surprises that might hurt your feelings. Instead, tell the bartender what you like and they'll work their magic, usually with a taste so you don't commit to something you regret. As a wine drinker, I especially appreciate when they suggest something I wouldn't normally order and absolutely nail it. The vibe is casual but a sort of kind of sexy (weird). The dim lighting, great energy, and zero pressure might be it. Bar seating up front, games if you're feeling social, and high tables in the back for groups or communal mingling. It's the kind of place where you can settle in... or pop in, pop out, and still feel satisfied without spending your rent money. They have small bites like grilled cheese and occasional cheese plates, but let's be honest, this is not a food destination, and that's perfectly fine. My beer-loving friends can happily sample half the menu while I sip a perfectly chilled Sauvignon Blanc and judge none of it. And finally, the real MVPs: the bartenders. Always friendly, always helpful, always down to chat, especially if you're there solo (hi, it's me again!). They'll listen to you ramble, offer great suggestions, and somehow make you feel like a regular even if you're just stopping in briefly. Reliable, fun, unpretentious, and consistently solid. Came here after a show at footprint center and it has great low-key hangout vibes. There are SO many drink options, albeit most are beer and I don't like beer but they have some other selections for people like me. My friend ordered for me while I held down our spot so I didn't see the entire menu but she came back with a glass of Moscato, it was so yummy and sweet. I believe I had like 3 glasses before we left. The only thing that made us a little sad was the jukebox didn't let us play anything since my friend had leftover credits from another bar for the same type of machine. My husband and I came here on a Sunday close to 1:00pm. Although Yelp says that they opened at 1:00pm, a bartender stated that on Sundays they open around 2pm due to the low traffic on this day and at this time. Loved all the games and various seating options, but be sure to arrive early because it can get crowded. Wine was good. Meat/cheese board was not impressive. Not bad, but far from special. Salami, ham, dried apricots, walnuts, crackers, two soft cheeses and one medium cheese, and olives. The problem was just the quality of ingredients. It was mediocre for $13 and their description as "artisan meats and cheeses" is just not accurate. You can definitely get all of these ingredients, at this quality, prepackaged at CVS (except the ham and cheese). One of the cheeses was pretty good (the medium one). The music was loud and not my vibe at all (it was like 2000's alternative rock or something is my best guess). It was a Tuesday night. There were like 4 people there. No idea why the music sounded like a kids dorm room. Service was not bad. No smiles or anything made me feel super comfortable but it was fine. I asked about food and she assumed I was a tourist I suggested majereles, ainsworth, or Blanco. Of those, Blanco is the only one I'd intentionally eat at haha but that's ok. It's subjective. They had shrek on the tv and then buffy the vampire slayer. I don't care either way but just fwiw. I can't think of any really compelling reason why I would go back. Oh, they have board games. If I had a friend over that liked games maybe it would be a good place for a wine and a game. But being so loud, not even sure about that. I still haven't found a great place downtown for wine and charcuterie. So far, the options on Roosevelt (a few blocks up the road) are much better. read more

The Whining Pig is our favorite bar in downtown Phoenix. Miguel and Anthony always make us feel welcome and ensure our glasses are never empty. We love the variety of beers, ciders and sours and love the upscale, dive-bar feel. The playlist is also generally on point. Love, Love this location! We happened upon it accidently! We go to the Whining Pig in Ahwatukee and heard about this location but had not gone to it. We were walking on our way back from dinner and saw it! Of course had to go. Anthony was the server on staff. Great knowledgeable bartender. They even have a chalkboard list of each of the bartenders favorite brews. On today's trip we decided to stick with wine. Randomly found this spot while wandering downtown on a Saturday afternoon, and wasn't disappointed! The interior I can describe is a rich bachelor's game room. It had quirky, fun details mixed with high end finishes. It was just fun to look around at! Penny countertops, chalk walls galore to draw on, tons of card and board games, sports on the TV, good music, and the most incredible selection of beers and wine. We took advantage of the brown bag special- $3 during happy hour got us a bottle or can of the bartender's choice, served as a surprise in a brown bag. Fun and a great value! This includes service, drinks, AND their brownie. This was my favorite wine and beer bar in Phoenix mainly because of the ambiance. Walking in I was hesitant because I'm not a big beer person and a sweet wine kind of person, I know, I know judge me all you want. I was excited to see that they had $8 beer flights because I'd have to like at least one of the ones I tried right? Right. My favorite was the Passion Fruit Nectar Mead. As for their wines, their red sangria is absolutely delicious! You know what else is delicious? Their brownie. Check in for a free brownie which looks unsuspecting but it is a delicious combination of peanut butter and brownie. What's better than beer/wine and board games?! This place has a ton of beer and wine selections and can please anyone from a beer amateur to a beer connoisseur. They have an awesome happy hour (1-8pm everyday) and have $2 off all drafts. They have $8 beer flights (5 3oz glasses) and $12 beer flights (4 3oz glasses). They have TONS of board games, from trivia pursuit, connect 4, jenga, cards against humanity, boggle, sorry, and a lot more. They also have retro two person controller games on a screen. The only thing is they don't serve liquor. I'm usually not a beer person but the atmosphere here is just awesome. All the employees are so nice and helpful as it was our first time. Also, if you check in you can get a free brownie which is actually AMAZING. I thought it'd be just some cheap brownie but it was delicious! Not great for big groups but it definitely is a great place to go to grab a quick drink. The food menu is limited so don't get greedy. This place is probably the best bar I've been to with such a great menu. There were more than 30 beers on tap with a good wine menu too. The atmosphere is nice with plenty of seats available. The bar tender was friendly and there was good service. Happy hour was until 8pm so that's def a plus especially if you're coming from work. There are 2 bathrooms that are unisex which could be a little cleaner. One of the bathrooms didn't have soap or paper towels. I tried a blueberry beer which was really good. It smelled like blue berry pancakes which made it taste even better. I got a brown bag beer for $3 after telling the bar tender what kinds I like and it was good! The California 2017 merlot was really good. I would def recommend you to try this or get a wine or beer flight. It's def worth your time checking this place out! read more

Normally, I don't venture off downtown near Washington because the parking is horrible. I had no clue where to go, but luckily ended up in a parking garage, still lost. Nonetheless, I made it to meet my friend. Aside from the parking and no clue which way the WPDT was, it was refreshing when I walked in. Immediately, I loved the decor and the bartender was very welcoming. He quickly greeted us and began to tell us about the specials. I love the whining pig. This was my 1st time coming to this location and I really liked it! I love the additional space they have compared to the other locations and the wood tables are beautiful! Service is always outstsnding, the food is good, the beers are great and the wine is delicious! I usually don't drink beer but I'm a big fan of Avery Brewery and they currently have their beers on tap! They are fantastic!
