What a very pleasant surprise while working in Somerset, KY this past week. I was checking Yelp for places to eat for breakfast and I came across The Whippoorwill Diner. My coworker and I were greeted by Charles the owner. He asked how we heard about the diner, I told him some friends told me about it. I told Charles I wasn't picked and I eat whatever he recommended for breakfast. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are huge! You will not leave hungry. The dining area is small but very welcoming and the chairs are very comfortable. Next time your in the area put this on your to eat list. Support local small businesses!!!! You won't regret it! This was an *excellent* little diner with homemade, southern food. It's a short distance off the highway and a nice alternative from fast food on a long trip. Plentiful breakfast and lunch options to choose from. My wife and I had the hot brown and a side of Mac-n-cheese and it was worth every penny. It is clear that this place takes great pride in preparing food that is well above the ordinary and made from scratch. We received great service and the owner/cook personally came out to check that everything was good. Although it is a bit out of the way, you will enjoy the drive and will be glad you went. This was the first time I had tried the Whipporwill's dining room, and I was so pleased. On a humid, stormy day, the rustic, cozy feeling was so appealing. I ordered the nachos as my meal, and the smoked chicken was the absolute king of that plate. The owner came and talked with us, and it made the whole experience feel super comfortable. I would say bottom line of my experience at the Whipporwill is that their smoked meats are extraordinary, and you won't regret the beautiful scenic drive to get out there. Some places "phone in" a few seasonings for meats, but the Whipporwill nails it-- all of the entrees I've tried there have set the bar for me at a new high. Honorable mention is that their cornbread and their in-house baked breads are excellent as well. After dinner, make sure to snag some of the flavored breads on the way out the door. When you serve it at dinner the next day, it'll boost whatever you're serving with it. read more

Good country cooking with unique flair. The Whippoorwill is one of Pulaski county's best hidden gems. It's new location is a good ways from town, but well worth the drive. I have been for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and never been let down. The owner, Charles, cooks most of the food and even remembers that my dad likes "extra gravy." read more

Visiting from Louisville and have heard so much about Whippoorwill! Loved it! Such a gem and I wish I could take it home with me. I had the Old Timer breakfast and the sausage and gravy were perfect. Tried this place for the first time today for breakfast. They had some nice things in the menu, but the chef told me ha had some cornmeal pancakes, which weren't on the menu yet. There breakfast is great , I have the cornmeal cakes and syrup with eggs bacon and home style potatoes with onions. My wife gets the biscuits and chocolate gravy . I think a lot of locals didn't have great food experiences from the previous tenets in this building. It took me a while to bring myself to step back in.... What a delight! Charles (the owner and chef) makes sure that you get your food the way you need it! It's basic home cooking but perfection on flavor and another level up/twist on southern soul cooking! The BEST omelets in the area! And don't forget to try the deviled eggs and a side of the cabbage - delish!! :) For those of you visiting the area in the summer and pulling boats; there is plenty of parking space. The atmosphere is warm, it's impeccable service, and a rarity of wholesome FRESH food. No (frozen food) truck pulling up at this diner. Amazing! We were a party of four. Everyone ordered different. Personally I went for a solid old times breakfast. I enjoy cooking, so I can be picky. Potatoes perfectly done firm to crispy edges and soft inside. The biscuit was clearly fresh made. I complain about sausage gravy every where else because it can be too peppery or its just gravy not sausage gravy. It was really good. Mike couldn't stop talking authentic corn bread was like his childhood. Katie his wife had wraps and grits she loved. Whipporwill is now our go to each time we are in town. read more

We recently moved to the Somerset area from a bigger city and were tired of the suburban franchise breakfast restaurants. What a delight to find the Whipporwill!!! Charles Wright, the owner, introduced himself to my family the first time we went. It's like going to a friend's house. He chums up to my kids like an uncle. The menu is completely unique and interesting. Charles throws a curveball even at his pancakes. The atmosphere is quirky, there's always somewhere to sit, the food is always hot and tastes great, and the people who eat there are always friendly. We now eat at the Whippoorwill weekly for so we can continue exploring the menu. read more
