I love this place. It is so nice to have a dependable and reasonable restaurant/bar near by. Menu is solid and cocktails are great.

First time visiting The Whistling Duck - greeted as soon as we walked in with a "how many in party" and then "we need your phone #". I questioned why and were advised so they could sign us up for promotions. Ah, no thank you. let me try you 1st.... Parking lot was rather full, but dining room was not and we were promptly seated. We advised our server this was our first visit and were curious as to the house specialities. Server replied "we only have a daily soup special" so we tried a different question approach and said what are the more popular dishes. We then asked about what meals to stay away from and unbelievably our server actually mentioned 2 that people didn't like (while I appreciate the honesty, not the right location for that type of answer). We ordered drinks and when our server came back with them, placed our food order - fish & chips and a salmon bowl. No complimentary bread or any type of nibbles were brought and after inquiring later in the meal, learned they don't do that - there is a bread & jam on the appetizer menu. Our meals came and they were very good. Large portions and flavorful. Would have like the chips (fries) a bit more crunchy and there was a heat spice in the street corn with the salmon bowl that was a bit strong for the diner, but tolerable. The only item we really didn't like was the WD coleslaw - seemed like an oil & vinegar dressing to it. The gm stopped by and we spoke with her for a bit and she seemed to appreciate our feedback of our evening. We indicated that we'd probably be back in the future. We had a marvelous dinner. I ordered a NY Strip, medium rare, a Caesar salad and fries. Also had an incredible piece of cornbread. The presentation was beautiful. Steak cooked to perfection. The Caesar salad even had cornbread croutons which were an unusually tasty surprise. The service was excellent with a smiling and attentive Meagan. The GM, Ernie also spent time at our table. This was our first time back to what was formerly the Candler golf club restaurant, now The Whistling Duck. The ambience and decor has a fresh feel of low-country Carolina. We were greeted and seated right away as it was not very busy. The menu had enough variety for our party of three with each of us finding things we want when we return. Our server, Darcie, was prompt and attentive. She gave honest answers to our menu questions. Prices are reasonable as our check was under $50, with no alcohol. I'm looking forward to returning for the cornbread, Duck Puppies, and fried green tomatoes. read more

This was our first time into the new restaurant at OTOW that replaced "The Club at Candler Hills". We were greeted promptly by staff and seated in the (new) comfortable chairs! Nice change from the old ones! The staff was 100% on tonight (10/30) and took great care of us. Food came out in a timely manner and there was an appropriate pause between courses. All the food we ordered came out hot and very tasty. Looking forward to our return to try out the other menu options! read more

We had a great meal at the newly refurbished Whistling Duck at On Top of The World this evening. The service was on point and the new meals were delicious. We started out with the Pretzel (no pics as were starving and thus we dug right in). In came with a cheese sauce and a mustard sauce for dipping. Next was a cheese burger that was huge and my wife had to cut it half to bring the rest home. It was accompanied with skinny fries. I had the BLT, where the B was pecan smoked bacon, the T was a green fried tomato and I also added a fried egg. This was a very delicious sandwich and I paired it with the duck fat fries. They had a slice of apple pie had took one home for later to enjoy! The improvements made are a welcome change and the ambiance is upscale, but approachable. They are planning on making more changes to the menu in the near future and I am looking forward to what they entail. If you haven't been in a while, it is worth a taste. read more

We came to the Whistling Duck for Sunday lunch at 11am. Service was very friendly. The atmosphere was pleasant, clean, and quiet. We started our meal with tasty fried tomatoes. They had a light, crispy crust and was accompanied by a tangy sauce and a sort of pickled relish. For our entrees I had fish and chips. The fish was a lightly breaded haddock that was delicious accompanied by a tangy tartar sauce and coleslaw. Mt wife had a Saturday Morning Waffle. It was good, but very sweet. She thought that the cooked apples that were served atop the waffle would have been better served on the side. Unlike other reviews that I've seen for the WD, the time from ordering to being served was no longer than average. No complaints there. Another plus was that the server and the manager who stopped by our table made us feel welcome and valued. We recommend the Whistling Duck. read more

Came for dinner for two at 5:45, there was only one four-top inside and a group table outside occupied. It took a little longer than I would like to be acknowledged by our server, but she was friendly and efficient after that. I had the Fish and chips and my wife had the country fried steak. They were both tasty and the portions were generous for the price. I had an Old Fashioned cocktail for $8, which was a bargain considering the price of drinks in restaurants these days. It also took a little longer to get our check than it should have considering the venue was nearly empty. All-in-all we will probably go back there to eat; it would be interesting to see how they do when the place is crowded. read more

Food is so-so, not a lot of choices on the menu. Recent renovations have improved the spaces ambiance. Their $48 steak is overpriced. Most of the wait staff work hard, but mismanagement and inconsistencies have haunted this dining spot for years. Staffing shortages, food variety and running out of food items are a regular occurrence. Changing the restaurants name, management company and in-house management staff over the past 10 years has not improved the overall rating of this dining spot. Went there after a Saturday show for drinks and appetizers. Beautiful evening so we chose outside seating. Not crowded as I expected for a weekend. We ordered cocktails. For appetizers several orders Bavarian Pretzel, Fried Green Tomatoes, Wings for our party of 7. Drinks came out quickly, Pretzel and Tomatoes later. The Wings took forever. One of the Pretzels was burned and hard like a rock. The Fried Green Tomatoes looked awful - small and not covered with batter. We thought they were Fried Pickles. Waitress apologized and said she wouldn't charge us. As for the Pretzel, she apologized for the chef and said he was having an "off" night. Wish I knew that before being seated. We would have gone elsewhere. Burned Pretzel was substituted with Shrimp Cocktail but it was awful - rubbery and hard to chew. Wings finally came out and they were good. Second round of cocktails ordered. Two of three drinks served quickly but another Martini took so long, member of our party cancelled her drink order. I figured only issue was the chef but again it took forever to get the check. Split party checks were incorrect and waitress had to go back twice to fix. I paid cash rather than credit just to get out of there. People a few weeks ago had a positive experience with indoor seating on a busier night. I won't return though. If chef and service inconsistent, they should just close. read more

Disappointed in the limited menu. For a golf course restaurant, in my opinion, there was too few small plates and share plates. We have been to the new Whistling Duck twice in the last two weeks. Both times we have had excellent service and the food was outstanding! The first time we had the fish and chips and the bacon wrapped meatloaf that came with mashed potatoes and collard greens. Both meals were excellent as was the portion size and price. Tonight we both had the smashed burgers and one had fries and the other a side salad. The burgers were excellent, and came out from the kitchen very quickly. The side salad was extremely fresh and crisp. Each time we have had excellent drinks from the bar and it's hard to beat these drink prices these days. The first evening we sat inside and tonight we had warmer weather allowing us to sit outside, which was very nice as well. As OTOW residents we will definitely be going back again! read more

This was our first time back since the restaurant was over Hauled and renamed. What a terrible disappointment! We waited for 30 minutes for our food. When it did come, it was cold and had to be sent back, which took another 10 minutes. We were told they were so so busy, but the parking lot wasn't full and there were no people waiting at the door. They were unable to attend the people outside on the patio. Why seat people when you're not capable of handling those with no reservations? Although the food was acceptable once it was delivered to the table hot, I would not recommend this restaurant at this time. read more

As I suspected with the restaurant being inside a 55+ community, the menu is tailored for the older pallet. The restaurant feels more like a 19th hole situation at the golf course. They had lots of sandwiches and handheld fair. We had dinner, and they had 4 or 5 entres. I felt like the sides were lacking. My daughter had a fillet. Which was going to be served with a side of succotash and a rice. My daughter did not want either of those, so she asked for sweet potato, and a side salad. When they served the meal, all she had on her plate was a steak. And The Lady said that she substituted both of the sides for the salad. Keep in mind the steak was $45. I had a pork chop with a fennel salad and sweet potato. And my wife had the fish of the day, with a fennel salad, and sweet potato. We did not substitute. So basically all dishes came with either sweet potato, rice, succotash, french fries, or fennel salad. That's all they had. The portions were small. Dinner for three. Was $130 plus tip. For a total of $150. The food was OK. We joked as we left that we were going to have to stop by at Burger King and pick something up because we were still hungry. read more

We celebrated Thanksgiving with a wonderful waitress, Nicole. I had the best Duck meal I ever had. Duck was cooked perfect, fell off the bone. So much flavor! My husband had a steak, he too enjoyed and stated the steak was perfect in flavor and cook. My husband too order his fries, half regular cook the other half duck oil cooked fries.
