My sister in law and her husband reside not far from this restaurant. We went there after visiting them and decided to spring for dinner somewhere they recommended. Sounded like a good choice, so off we went for what turned out to be quite a disaster! Now I'm not one to really ever give a bad review unless there were so many ridiculous unforgiveable mistakes and completely insane things done during a visit that made me quite angry enough to vent. THIS WAS ONE OF THOSE. My husband ordered the fish & shrimp dinner with steak fries done extra crispy, I ordered the beer cheese burger (before I knew how runny the beer cheese was) but with onion rings (an upcharge, but I don't really care for fries), my sister in law got the prime rib 8oz & ordered it medium well with a baked potato, my brother in law ordered a bowl of the broccoli cheese soup, a side order of mashed potatoes and one of macaroni & cheese (he recently had dental surgery and cannot chew well so needed soft food). The pretzel arrived we had ordered as an appetizer. It was barely warm, but we didn't care since we were starving! Time passed slowly, another 20 minutes went by. They cleared our pretzel hanger with the cups of dip that were pretty inedible and then another 10-15 minutes went by. I was just starting to get really anxious when finally our meals arrived. The waitress carried out the tray with our meals on it and starts to hand them out...and I notice there's no onion rings with my burger and no bowl of soup for my brother in law..."ummmm...what happened to the rest of our meal?" I ask. The waitress says "oh yeah...we're out of onion rings". "What?" I ask. "Can't you get something else?" the waitress asks me...not, WOULD you like something in its place, no, CAN'T was the word she used. "No, there's nothing else I really want." *I sigh and close the menu* "just give me the fries that normally come with the burger I guess", I say, knowing I'll never eat them. "But what about his soup?" I ask pointing to my brother in law. "We're out of the broccoli cheese right now, they'd have to fix a new batch and I would hate to make you wait for longer than you already have", she says to him "how about the tomato dill?", she asks him."No. I hate tomato soup", he says. "But I hear it's really good" she continues. *now he's getting angry* "NO" he says louder to her. "I don't LIKE TOMATO SOUP!" he insists. She turns on her heel and leaves. We're lucky she comes back with silverware and more than the little black drink napkins this time. We look at our plates closely, only to notice the food we'd been so looking forward to had obviously died in the window from sitting so long. The prime rib looks like it had been sitting there for almost a half hour and was rare, nowhere remotely CLOSE to medium well. My bottom bun is soggy from the watery beer cheese while sitting and the burger is cold. My husband's shrimp and fish, fried and steamed veggies are ice cold and look pathetic. The breading is claggy and mushy from oil and from sitting so long. My sister in law's baked potato is so stone cold that the butter won't even melt! Two little bowls (cups) of sides were all my brother in law got in the end. Both were cold. When we finally flagged the waitress down and told her this, she said it wasn't her fault, that she brought us the meals as soon as she was given them. She said she'd go get the manager for us, who arrived several minutes later. He said he'd take some percentage off our meals and was sorry; but here's the catch. I NEVER got my premium side of onion rings. I ended up with fries. That's what normally COMES WITH THE BURGER anyways. The burger and fries meal is listed as $13.00 and the premium sides are an extra $5.50. My burger with onion rings on the bill was $18.00, BUT I NEVER GOT THE ONION RINGS. They never took them off the bill. And the bowl of soup my brother in law never got? Still on the bill. The manager gave us a discount of $27 and change. But wait a minute. $14 worth of that bill was items we never received! So in actuality, he only gave us $13 and change off of a almost $100 bill for horribly greasy, cold food. What a rip off! When a customer asks you for a to-go box and you leave and come back without it and they remind you again, then you leave the second time and come back without it AGAIN...DON'T SNAP AT THEM when they AGAIN say "we really need a to-go box!". It's your tip on the line. Don't turn to me and say loudly,"I just got it and set it on the counter in the kitchen! I have to get it, so give me a minute please!!". I've asked you three times for one so don't go snapping at ME! Our first and last impression of Horse and Hounds Restaurant? Horrible customer service, terrible food, extremely high prices that do not match the food in quality NOR quantity. 2/10 definitely do not recommend and we will never go back. read more

Decided on Horses and Hounds in Ocala for our weekend lunch adventure, after spending time attending the home and garden exposition at the World Equestrian Center. Once at the restaurant, we experienced an initial wait to be seated (10 minutes) Then after being seated, we had to exchange menu's for some reason, and there was some confusion as to who or whom would be our waiter/ waitress? We finally got our waiter "Chris" he was prompt, mater of fact, and professional. I ordered the spinach salad and a grilled chicken breast on the side, while Dawn ordered the fish and chips. The restaurant is clean with ample lighting over the booths and track lighting through out. I got to see a co-worker (friend) and her family which was pretty cool. The wait for service after our order was placed wasn't too long. The spinach salad was worth the wait and outstanding! The chicken was grilled to perfection and Dawn said her Fish and Chips with smashed peas were delicious. Our waiter, Chris made several trips to our table and made sure we were good to go. Overall, after a little minor and humorous amount of confusion; The meal and service turned out to be excellent. The price is about normal for the area, and just a little pricey for everyday dining. Very disappointed, had high hopes but the food was not authentic British/Irish pub food. Shepherd's pie was awful, had no HP brown sauce or English mustard neither of which the server ever heard of. The garlic bread on the side of the shepherds pie was cold. The fish and chips was Basa fish, not cod or haddock. Food was tasteless, the bread for my sandwich was burnt. I hate to leave a bad review, but this was my second order in a row where something was forgotten. this time the shrimp I added to my salad was forgotten. I had checked the bag after I left while waiting at a light. I didn't get to check the rest of the order till I got home. The farmhouse beef was missing the glaze, and the wings were missing the blue cheese (we ordered extra). The food is always good but people don't want to be missing anything from their. Order. Yes mistakes happen, but this is the second order in the past 3 weeks. So this is obviously something that happens often. I shouldn't have to check my bag. That doesn't change the fact that they forget things. I'll give them one more shot. read more

I found this place when searching for a prime rib place in Ocala (which my son wanted for his birthday lunch yesterday). It did NOT disappoint. When I called yesterday (Monday), Trace answered and said that they did offer prime rib every day and that they had a special on it on Monday. We arrived at lunch and our waiter Paul was stellar. He was very personable and made a recommendation of not only their prime rib (wonderful and served with house made creamy horseradish sauce) but also delicious sweet potato fries served with some marshmallow cream on the side. Even the vegetables (squash, zucchini and red onions) served with our entree were delicious! My husband loved the BLT (bacon fried to perfection) and said that the coleslaw was the best he's had in a long time. Paul offered my son a complimentary dessert since it was his birthday and he chose Key Lime Pie. Wow. This one was how it used to be made in old Key West when you used to buy the pies from that region (since Miami is my hometown) and the tartness was perfect as were the graham cracker crust... out of this world and made with love. This will be our ONLY go-to place for prime rib going forward. We even had the manager Mike check in on us. I just don't see that anymore except in fine dining restaurants. Well done, Horse and Hounds! We'll be repeat customers going forward and yes, it's worth the devil from Crystal River (about 1 hour away - our new hometown). We ended up at Horse & Hounds after going to the equestrian center in Ocala. The food and service was pretty good. Our group ordered buffalo shrimp, pretzel, a kids meal with mac and cheese, and two different types of fish, and some type of prime rib or steak dish. The fish was good, and our friend said his prime rib was good, but "nothing to write home about." The standouts were the appetizers and the kids mac and cheese. I was happy with my meal, but I'll probably try another restaurant next time I'm in Ocala. read more

Stopped for a bite on my way through. Ordered a drink and a Rueben. My server was awesome! My sandwich right off was very soggy and I couldn't pick it up without it sliding apart. That was not my dissapointment with the food though. My disappointment was the fact that there was so much fat and gristle in the corned beef that I couldn't even eat probably about half of it. I had to take the sandwich apart to finish eating what I could.. There was no eating that.. I told the server and he said he would let the manager know and the manager didn't even have the decency to come over to the table to speak to me. A group of us from our neighborhood went there for lunch today and it was awful. We were sitting in the outdoor patio & waited over 1 HOUR PLUS to get our meals. 3 of us ordered fish & chips, 2 ordered fish tacos & 1 ordered salad. 2 people from our party went inside to find out what the issue was, asked to see a manager who BTW NEVER came to our table to talk to us. Clearly there was a communication problem in the kitchen & we were given some BS excuse by the waiter. It wasn't entirely his fault but he could have communicated better & perhaps tell us to order something else. It should not take almost 1 1/2 hours to get the meals we ordered. My fish was overcooked & the fries were cold- I ate it cause I was hungry & I didn't want to wait for another meal. UNACCEPTABLE. This is supposedly a family run business? They should be ashamed. We came from a little downstate going to the WEC to look at the Christmas decorations. We checked Yelp for a casual restaurant in the area and found Horse and Hounds and thought we would give it a try. What a great pick we really enjoyed our dinner, service was very good. Our dinners ranged from grilled chicken sandwich to the Reuben to the wings and the outstanding fish tacos recommended by our waitress (Emilia ). Drove an hour to see our daughter and take her to lunch. Found this jewel online. We sat outside and our server, Sara, was wonderful. She made suggestions regarding drinks and menu items that were spot on. The roast beef special, the 1/2 pound burger "cowboyed up" and the spinach salad were excellent. Service is attentive and friendly. We were also surprised by live music featuring Kenna Dee, a wonderful guitarist and singer. Tops the Yellow Pony at WEC. We stopped this past Sunday at Horse and Hounds after sitting for 10 minutes at elevation 89 with no acknowledgment whatsoever. So glad we stopped in!!We had the beer cheeseburger and the fish and chips, which were both excellent. Can't say the remodel a few years ago added anything, music was way loud but things got better. One friend ordered the beef stew, carrots were huge slices, but he said it was very good. Other friend and I got the fish tacos, one blackened, one not....delicious, both order a side of skinny fried, they were decadent! We decided to try out Horse and Hounds. Upon entrance it kinda smelled like a wet mop but we gave them the benefit of the doubt and sat down. It was not as cozy inside as I thought, per the website. I was just expecting a little more upscale based on website photos. We ordered a salad, wings and fries. Salad came out. It was just ok. Then 40 minutes later.....the waitress told us the order never got to the kitchen as they ran out of paper. We decided to just get our check and go at that point. It was just too long of a wait for 6 wings and a side of fries. Instead of apologizing, our waitress shouted back to the kitchen "they don't want their wings!". As if we did something wrong.. Then she said "you guys are fine, be safe out there". We didn't even know what that meant. Then she repeated "you're good to go, be safe out there. Sorry." We started out headed to Stirrups at the World Equestrian Center, but no reservation and a 2-hour wait even at the Yellow Pony, chased us down the street to Horse & Hounds. They were out of ribs so I settled on a NY Strip steak and my companions had Shepard's pie, French Dip sammich and the honey Bourbon salmon. We started off with baked Brie Everything was going great - the Brie was very tasty - until the entrees were brought out. Somehow the salmon was magically transformed into Mahi mahi. The server owned up to entering the wrong item. The French dip was good, the Shepard's pie was Uber filling and the steak was definitely one of the best I've had in a long time. Perfectly cooked, great flavor and I wasn't even tempted to ruin it with steak sauce. Again, the down side was two of us were done eating before the salmon entree ever made it to the table. The green beans were a little cold on the plate, but the salmon was hot and very flavorful. read more

I was at Horse & Hounds yesterday with a large group. My friend and I arrived at 5:25 together. We placed our dinner orders (I ordered the beef tips appetizer as my dinner) and we both ordered the house chardonnay. The food came and although mine was barely warm, I ate it since it was tasty and I'm not in the habit of sending food back. We both received our chardonnay (small portions), and later we each ordered another glass at the same time. When the bill came, my friends wine was charged as $5.50 ($11.00 total) a glass, and mine was 6.50 ($13.00 total) a glass. I pointed this out to our server, and she insisted that it was because of happy hour times, which was impossible, because we ordered at exactly the same time. I didn't want to make a big fuss because it's only $2.00, but I thought she would acknowledge her mistake which didn't happen. read more

We sat outside where it was a bit dark, My husband ordered the 9 oz, for $20.00 I ordered 6 oz, (no price shown on the menu) But I supposed it was less than 20. First the waitress brought us the wrong bill for 38.00 and we noticed because it had tacos and drinks. When she brought our bill it was for 49.00 and we were surprised and confused as to why so much. We were told the side dishes are extra. (The side of rice pilaf was super small, like kids size. We never knew this or were made aware of this. We each ordered 2 sides like we normally do, when she asked us if we wanted anything else. I can't imagine meat with no sides. On top of this, we were also charged for paying with a credit card!.
