We selected this restaurant based on the reviews and menu and were not in any way disappointment. Everything we ate was excellent. Started with the cheese plate and very much enjoyed the selection. I wish they would have provided more bread or crackers but that is because I'm a carb lover. Additionally, we had to clarify what one of the items on the cheese plate was because it tasted like alcohol to my husband. Looked like olives or cherries. It was indeed a type of cherry and had alcohol. I was grateful we had asked before trying myself at 8 months pregnant. My husband got the pressed 1/2 chicken and we both loved it. It had an incredible depth of flavor, great seasoning. I got the braised short ribs and enjoyed these as well. However, I wished they had been served with mashed potatoes instead of what I believe were grits. We ended our meal with the flourless chocolate cake which was the perfect cherry on top. Dinner for 6 here last night. Very pleasant dining room with a nice nighttime view of the shops across the street that were all lit up making for a festive atmosphere. Our waitress was very nice, but I thought she tried a little too hard to upsell us on a Pinot Noir to a bottle twice the price of what we asked for. We ordered 3 apps: sourdough bread, carrots, and the cheese plate. The latter was the big hit (pictured below) - we even had a guessing game to see who could figure out what the spice was in the pickled onions. I thought the bread was a little overpriced, as I expect a good restaurant to provide that gratis, but I guess this is Door County. I had the double burger which was cooked to perfection and really enjoyed it. The sauce on top reminded me a bit of a Big Mac, but nothing wrong with that. The beef patties had great flavor. The fries that came with it were perfectly cooked, but a little heavy on the salt. We had 2 vegans in our party, and the chefs did a wonderful job of making a chicken-less jerk chicken which looked truly beautiful. We all had a great time and enjoyed our meals. I love Fish Creek and TWS is right on the Main Street of their downtown. Perfect location for an easy walk to several restaurants and shops! The lobby is quaint and cozy. Very welcoming with leather seating and wood furniture giving a rustic beach vibe. The attached restaurant had the same vibe. We heard great things about the food as well but was not able to experience it due to it being closed the days we were there (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday). Typically continental breakfast is offered but with restrictions in place, we had to place our breakfast order the night before. Homemade muffins, delicious cheese biscuits, fruit and yogurt were some available options. Perfect and light! The reason for the three stars is the room. My number one complaint is the lack of attention to the details. The room/s (I'm assuming they are all similar) was in desperate need of some updating. I'm talking fresh paint, maybe some pictures/paintings on the wall, a bigger TV. See pics below. Room was fine for a couple of nights but I wouldn't stay for much longer than that. The best meal we had in DC! Staff was amazing...kind, helpful and fast service. Waiter knew we were splitting dinner between 4 of us so he beefed up the serving sizes, brought us extra plates, and checked on us often. I would not recommend this to anyone. The only great thing about this place was the nice in keeper, Jim. I found out from other vacationers that the owner of the Inn is from out of the country(Israel) and only bought the place as a tax deduction. Well, it shows. There is no effort to make this a potential 3 or even 4or5 star inn. At check in, there was no one at the front desk. But our key was waiting for us in an envelope. There was a coffee maker in the lobby, but no water in the coffee maker and no access to water in the lobby. We passed the restaurant on the way up stairs to our room and it was closed. As soon as we opened the room door, we got hit with a blast of warm air. My husband turned around to look for the thermostat and found a hole on the wall that was covered in duct tape where a thermostat controller use to be. We looked for a fridge to place some cheese and chocolate that we had bought on a tour, and there was no fridge in the room. We walked out into the hall to find ice for the ice bucket as a temporary solution until we depart, but there was no place to get ice. We went back downstairs and found the innkeeper who then welcomed us and stated that he is trying to fix the AC. The control for the entire inn was in the lobby. He finally did get it working. We asked hi m where can we get ice and he said nowhere but the restaurant which is clsed. He has access and went into the restaurant to get us some ice. This is the only way to get ice which is hit or miss since the in keeper is not available most of the time. There is no coffee maker in the room either. In addition to no fridge, no ability to get ice readily, or water for coffee( we had to bring it ourselves from our water bottles that we purchased), there were no hangers to hang clothes. There is only a shower. No soaker tub or bathtub as you would expect for an inn that is trying to go for an authentic period from the 1800s. The windows in the hallways and in the rooms were quite filthy. They were filled with mosquitos and bugs. It looked liked they had not been cleaned since the inn was built. Our room was nice enough. It was clean. The furniture seemed like it was from a goodwill. I understand they were going for a distressed country decided, but it was more junky then anything. They do have a housekeeper because we ran into her on the second day and asked her for more ice. She was pleasant enough, but she did not clean or room once during our stay. The restaurant is not open on Mondays and is only open on weeknights. The menu is very expensive(which I do not mind). We did not eat there because locals told us that it was not worth the price. There is another inn down the block which is rated 4-5 stars, and that is where we will stay in the future. Like I said, the only great thing about the Whistling Swan Inn is the personable inn keeper when he is available. The owner being from out of the country shows no interest in making this place decent. If you do not mind dirty windows, no front desk person, no workable or controllable AC, no fridge, ice machines, hangers, bathtubs and no ability to make coffee in your room or in the common area, then this is the place for you. For me, not so much. @delta.com should be ashamed for having this place on their list of places to stay. read more

Reviewing the INN, not Restaurant: Better than sleeping in your car. Calling this Inn upscale is a plain lie. The restaurant may be upscale; I don't know because when we came down from our rooms and asked to be seated we were told they couldn't serve us as they were too busy. It was 7 PM on a Thursday with the restaurant closing at 8 but it was disappointing. When we arrived to check in there was no one at the desk, just an envelope with my name on it and a key inside. There is no maid service and you are required to stay two nights. The email we received didn't mention needing a reservation at the the restaurant. Breakfast is coffee, juice or water with muffins, fruit or donuts. Not really what I would expect from a place listed an upscale Bread and Breakfast. There was no option to purchase a full breakfast either. In the room there are no instructions for calling for the desk or whoever is on duty but not at the desk. I did find a sign giving that info at the desk when I went down but it wasn't there when I needed it. The room was small but the bed was nice. The TV is not much bigger than a laptop. The shower only has half a door by design which makes the water leak all over the floor. When the partially used roll of TP the room came with ran out I looked around for more. Then I looked around for someone at the desk to get a roll. Then I looked behind the desk. I did find one in a 1 toilet paper roll sized drawer in the bathroom I had overlooked. What would upscale mean? Fridge in the room with liquor to purchase? Nope. Complimentary coffee and tea in the room? Nope. Being greeted on arrival? Nope. A spacious room with a queen sized bed? Nope. A complimentary drink at the restaurant that is part of the Inn? Nope (I think they only serve wine). A large high definition TV? Nope. Decent parking? Yes. They have decent parking. If this is the only place with a vacancy book it but there are around 8 other places within a couple blocks. It was no more conveniently located than any of the others. Owners, please change your description to read "Cozy Inn with an upscale restaurant (reservations needed)" and significantly lower your price. read more

Stayed at the Inn and enjoyed our weekend but I feel like there were some things that I didn't see mentioned in the reviews that I would've liked to know prior to booking a room here. *The rooms have no curtains so if you face east, you basically have the sunrise shining directly in your face all morning. *There are small windows above the doors so the bright hallway light shines into your room all night. *The rooms are basically just small bedrooms off the hallway so you will hear the bar noise from downstairs and if your neighbors are noisy, you will hear it plain as day. *The wifi did not work in my room. At one point, it wasn't even showing up as an available network. *You can't adjust the thermostat in your own room because it affects the entire floor so you just have to deal with it. However, the bathrooms were nice and seemed recently renovated, shower was great. The parking was great and the walkability of the Inn is amazing for Fish Creek but I don't think I would be eager to stay here again for the price you pay and what you get. read more

We discovered Whistling Swan Restaurant a number of years ago while on vacation, always viewing it on a pedestal of fine dining--a northern retreat with creative food. We had stopped going for a time due to knowing the menu well and not wanting repeat entrees. Again, on return, the menu is new to us, fresh ideas with high culinary style. We had the roasted beet and apple salad (delightful) and the playfully name 'Ewe Calf to be Kidding' (blue cheese, fig jam and cracker). These introductions to our meal were perfect: fresh, local, creative--melds of good taste. Entrees: Trout for me. Duck for my partner. The preparation could not have been any more thoughtful or enjoyable. I can't say I memorized past wine lists, but the wine selections have not changed in terms of quality. So much was wrong I didn't know how to make a complaint. Appetizer over cooked, poor quality meat cuts, blackened prime rib did not have seasoned flavor. Fish was cold when brought to the table. Beef described as braised was at most pan fried, skipped the braising to tenderize. Rice overcooked, potatoes rubbery undercooked. The restaurant is beautiful the menu sounds great. The service was great. Please educate your cooking staff on how to deliver seasoned well prepared dishes. I think the owner/chef was in the dining room most of the time. Going to be reeeeal honest here: we drove five hours for a relaxing escape from the city and a change of environment. I wanted to catch up on my classes and enjoy the water and woods. Characteristic of a small town- most places were closed after 8. We found this restaurant in an inn and decided to try our luck. We came in (dressed in casual athletic wear) and were told only the bar was available and that they were booked through closing so a table would not become available. To note- my partner is an Indian man. Throughout the hours we were there, several groups came in who were walk ins and were seated. Even more so- we noticed a table that remained open for over an hour RIGHT BEHIND US. Overheard the server talking about how it was a 'waste' to visit Hawaii if you couldn't stay for at least a month... the food was good and the wine was great, but the service? Seemingly a bit prejudiced. We even tried to get a room to stay and while it said online there were available rooms, we were told there weren't any. Sad to see this kind of thing happen in a town that seems to believe itself progressive especially given how much we spent and tipped in our short three day visit. read more

We've eaten here on previous visits to Door County and were looking forward to another lovely meal. Due to a change in plans, we were not able to make our reservation - but I forgot to cancel it. When I called to apologize and to offer to pay a no-show fee, the staff were very understanding. This rating reflects not just previous wonderful meals at Whistling Swan, but also a recognition of their excellent customer service. It was very easy to make the reservation (a real person answered the phone right away), and I regret that the staff also had to extend grace to me for forgetting it. We booked our third stay at the Whistling Swan. We tried to stay other times but because of covid and a change in ownership, it was unavailable. When they reopened, we booked again for a visit to see a show at the Door County Auditorium. We had a medical emergency which precluded us from visiting. The auditorium gladly reserved our booking for a future show. The Whistling Swan refused any accommodation. They forced us to pay the full booking even thought we were struggling with an emergency that was unavoidable. Truly unempathetic. We will never stay there again. read more

When we started making plans for our door county trip, which was going to be in late May, we struggled finding a bed and breakfast that had less than a 3 night stay requirement, since we were staying with friends in sturgeon bay part of our time and wanting to hit the B&B option for 2 nights. Conveniently enough the whistling swan didn't have this requirement and was also one of the top rated Restaurants we planned to visit anyway! The website depicts the rooms exactly for what they are. We had a small 1-bedroom suite with a nice sized bathroom. The host's name is James and he's the most kick ass B&B host ever! He was absolutely hilarious, helpful, well respected and accommodating!! The food was off the charts (scallops were my favorite), and the morning breakfast was way more than we anticipated, and in a beautiful sun-room overlooking the fish creek strip. It's across the street from a great coffee shop and one of the most popular fish boils in all of door county, so I'd highly recommend to all.. read more

I have always loved coming here, The ambience and food is stellar. However lately at brunch I've noticed a annoyance for me and probably others my age. The Whistling Swan sounds like a pretentious and stuffy restaurant with a dull menu. And that couldn't be farther from my experience! We ordered the Brussels sprouts to start - they are unexpectedly the best thing we ate all night. They were spicy, creamy, cheesy...simply put, they were everything. (And, I don't yammer on about bsprouts often.) In between the dishes we ordered, we were surprised to receive complementary biscuits, honey, and butter, and a cold cauliflower soup that were amazing. My partner and I got the ribeye and pork shank entrees - the portions were generous and every bite was delicious. The chef topped the night off with a complementary caramel bite. There are so many faux-fancy restaurants in Door County - but the Whistling Swan was a low-key, unexpected joy with the best food we've had in the area. Thank goodness Door County isn't all cherry pie and Swedish meatballs! Not that I don't appreciate these classic peninsula dishes, but sometimes you want to be pampered. The Whistling Swan in Fish Creek is the perfect place to flirt with a city vibe while maintaining a vacation feel. The setting is just divine; the classic and perfectly understated muted brown and cream color scheme adds to the casual lake side feel, but the modern stemware and plates indicate quality fare is on the horizon. My husband and I split a soft shell crab appetizer. The crab was perfectly cooked and artfully presented. It was served atop a bed of ridiculously fresh greens and finished with a sea salt foam. Okay, foams are not generally my thing, but in this case it really worked. I think it pulled the dish together because it evoked the sea in a sensible culinary manner. While I enjoyed my duck entree with lentils my husband's lamb entree left him slightly disappointed. The lamb loin was under-seasoned, but the Ratatouille had a nice flavor. The polenta, however, was a total failure and the only reason my rating was 4 instead of five stars. That aside I must say my dinner at the Whistling Swan was by far the best meal I have had in all of Door County...ever. read more

Great place to stay if you like air conditioners that make noise, toilets that can't flush more than 3 pieces of toilet paper, and furniture they call antique but is really just old and in need of paint and repair. The thing I love about DC and this restaurant is no exception is the friendly people and service I was in Napa last week and had some great food but the service wasn't half that of the restaurants in DC. We ended up having dinner here very "last minute," as we got back from our afternoon activities later than planned and didn't realize how late it was. We tried a few places closer to where we were staying, but many were either closed for the season, closed for the evening or not taking any more guests due to the later time. My wife called and was told if we could be there soon that we would be able to have dinner. I certainly wasn't expecting much, but the restaurant was very clean and definitely a bit more "upscale," than anywhere else we've eaten on our trip. We got a beautiful corner table and never felt rushed the entire time we were there, even though they were obviously finishing up for the evening. Our Server was very professional and went through the menu with us and made a few recommendations as well. For starters, we had a garden vegetable salad, which was rally nice - much better than I expected after eating around the area for the last week. We also had their interpretation of "Prosciutto & Melon," which was bette than any version I've had before, including the times I've had it in Italy. This version was served with fresh burrata cheese and was simply amazing. For entrées, one of my daughters had the vegetarian bucatini, which was awesome. I had the fish and chips, which was better than any I've had in quite a long time. My wife and one of my other daughters had the pork chop, which they both loved, and my youngest had a cheeseburger, which was really great as well. The presentation on everything was really great, down to the smallest details. For desserts, we had a homemade black raspberry sorbet that was really refreshing, but the best dessert was the chocolate cake, served with a creamy homemade caramel ice cream. When my wife commented on how good the cake was, our Server told us that her aunt owns a local bakery and makes the cakes for the Restaurant, which definitely makes sense - I bake a lot where I work back home, but getting a cake this moist layered as evenly as theirs isn't something you can achieve in most Restaurant Kitchens. As a professional chef of over twenty years, I was blown away, not only by the service and food, but also by how welcoming the entire staff was. From the moment we walked in to the second we left, everyone we interacted with was very friendly and extremely welcoming. Speaking from experience, I can tell you that late tables at the end of the night certainly aren't something that we look forward to in the Kitchen. Not once during my meal did any of us feel rushed in any way. Next time we're back in Door County, we definitely plan on visiting this gem several times. This place deserves pages and pages of excellent reviews, why are there only three?! My husband and I went to Door County for the weekend and had heard good things about the Whistling Swan. I had called a few weeks in advance to make a reservation because I heard they were hard to come by. I left a message but no one ever called me back to confirm, and my reservation wasn't made. That, however, is my only criticism of this establishment. We were able to make a reservation for the night we called and were seated upon arrival at a charming window table on the enclosed porch. Our waiter was professional but warm - not at all the level of stuffiness you expect for the quality of food served. It was so nice not to be condescended to but a snooty waiter. He even came out with his guitar occasionally to serenade the diners with a verse or two of "Slow Hand." All of the waiters and staff were knowledgeable and personable. Despite not being the owners, the staff runs the place as if it were their own business, and you can tell they love what they do. The food was amazing. My husband and I split the beef potsticker appetizer and then I had pork tenderloin with polenta and 6-year sharp cheddar sauce. My husband had steak with an unusually stuffed pepper - I wish I could remember what was in it, but it was fantastic. We split a seasonal dessert and I had a glass of ice wine that I loved. We loved our experience here about a month ago. I realize I am a little belated in writing this review, but I didn't want to waste my good comments on friends only. Yelpers, check this place out. My wife and I went on a Thursday night a few weeks ago. Its Winter Season, which we love because all of the tourists aren't around and we had the place to ourselves (a few other couples in there). The food and the accommodations ROCKED. FOOD-- Awesome. I had the Cabbage Savoy and, being vegetarian, I was totally impressed with how much attention and love they put into this dish. To start we had the best gazpacho I ever had then came the main course: Roasted cabbage sprinkled with almonds on a bed of spelt pilaf with tomato sauce. Finally, surrounded by snow peas. The flavors brought a smile to my face and the extra crunch from the almonds and peas was WAY fun! It's clear that they have creativity in the kitchen. ROOM-- We reserved Suite #3: It was off the hiZZy awesome! Having the extra room was great, especially since we were there 4 nights. The bed was beyond comfortable so we enjoyed several naps in addition to very sound sleeping at night. We especially liked how quiet it was. SERVICE-- Everyone is there is ACES and made us feel WAY comfortable. Clean accommodation in a vintage property with every modern amenity. The am breakfast of local yogurt, berries, home-made muffins, boiled eggs, cereal and fresh squeezed juice was great. Leslie was kind and friendly and accommodating. My only personal observations were that our bed was a bit more firm that I'm used to and blackout shades could be a good idea for east facing rooms for those who want the option of sleeping past 6 am in the summer. The food was AMAZING! This was the best restaurant we went to during our weekend in Door County as far as just the food was concerned. I had the duck and it was cooked perfectly. So why 4 stars instead of 5? That's because of the service. More specifically, our waiter. He came off as very cocky and condescending and at times he was flat out rude. This is one of the most charming places for dinner. The fish and chips are beyond fabulous! We also had the chopped salad, frites, parsnip sunflower soup, steak & chocolate cake. Everything was wonderful. I highly recommend the basque cheesecake with medjool dates, maple syrup & cashews...unbelievable! Gretchen was so gracious and a ton of fun. If we came up here to Fish Creek more than once a year I would not review the Swan. We love this inn and restaurant so much that I am already hesitant to share it with any but close friends. I make our reservations each year six months in advance. Not because they require it, just to be sure. Sit at the bar for a bit, and enjoy a Hinterland beer on draught or explore the ever-changing wine list. Watch the hipster staff scamper around and banter with guests to a soundtrack that may be the Black Keys Pandora station. When you get around to eating, starters are creative and seasonal. The chef is a master of pairing cheese with a jam, honey, or other little "extra". Don't miss it. You'll also receive two little amuse bouche surprises - at beginning and end. I won't ruin it for you. If you don't suck, buy a round for the kitchen with your dessert. Don't worry, you'll want to. And finally, stay away from here over Labor Day weekend.
