This is the second time I've been to Roots. Both times were equally amazing. Two years ago, my buddy recommended it. He's a regular visitor to Door County and he and his family count this among their favorite places to eat. I can see why. It's so good. The majority of their menu happens to be vegan, but whether you are a meat eater or not (I am), it doesn't matter -- the food is excellent. This most recent time, I got a Rice Bowl that had crispy shredded tofu...it was delicious. There's an awesome deck on the back side for outdoor seating, and a few seats out front too. Both times I've visited, we sat outside. It's in my top tier of places to eat in Door County. Like I said, if you are not a vegan or vegetarian, don't be scared off by the fact that most of the menu is meatless -- with flavors like this, it doesn't matter. read more

Such a unique and lovely hidden gem in Door County! This place is tucked away in a quiet corner right outside the usual chaos of Sister Bay. We came for lunch and were seated on the patio out back. The inside was a super cozy, rustic vibe, decorated beautifully. Their menu is small and mostly vegan. Thoigh, they do have a brat special that changes weekly (can also be made vegan). They have new specials every week, which is what I ordered. It was a curry wrap with sweet potatoes, raisins, apples, and more delicious fillings I can't quite remember. It was tasty and unique. I got the vegan kale Caesar on the side which was perfectly made. The person I was with ordered the walnut tacos and absolutely loved them, they looked delicious. read more

My husband and I stopped on our way to the Washington Island ferry. We are mostly vegetarian and eat local catch fish when in the area. Most places are very.meat heavy,but this was mentioned on a door county page. So we wanted to give it a try. We were very happy with the very veggie friendly menu. I had the asian tacos, and my husband had the local brat. We had a great time, great music, good beers on tap, and a very friendly local vibe. Usually with service this slow, I would give a 2 or 3 star rating but the delicious food made up for it! There were many people waiting, we ordered at the counter, and then waited for 30-40 minutes before approaching the counter and asking about the status of our food. Apparently it had been done for 20 minutes and was now cold but no one notified us that it was done. While i'm not too pleased with the service, I'm very happy there is a vegan restaurant in door county and their menu is great. I got the vegan Mac n cheese waffle and I still dream about it! So good! By a show of hands, how many of you are vegetarian and/or gluten free have a difficult time finding plentiful fresh, flavorful, high quality options at a single restaurant? Usually these are an afterthought, and intended to appease that one person in your party who doesn't eat what most people do. Well get ready to be happy. Even my wife, who does eat meat and would order deep fried gluten if they served it exclusively on a stick, loved it here as much as I did. We had almost everything on the menu during our visit. Broccoli wings, walnut tacos, mac and cheese waffles, and vegan Parmesan truffle chips. All outstanding. Whether you are gluten free, vegan, or the exact opposite, this place is fantastic. We are vegans from out of state, and we struggled to find good places to eat that had more than just a Beyond burger and fries, etc. A local shop owner recommended Roots Inn, and this was hands down one of the best vegan meals I've had out in YEARS. Everything was fresh and delicious, and the service was quick and friendly. My daughter and my niece were also blown away by the food! My friend and I stayed at Roots Inn for a 3 day trip to Door County and had an absolute blast. The innkeepers Collin and Sara are phenomenal at accommodating your needs, making delicious breakfasts, and giving great advice and recommendations for anything you want to do while there. Visiting Door County will forever go down in history as one of our favorite vacations, and the Roots Inn played a huge part in that. We stayed at the Inn for 2 nights, and wish we could have stayed longer. Each morning they served a delicious breakfast (accompanied by the best coffee ever.) and either Collin or Sara would sit down with us and help us map out our day. That was one of the kindest things to me, that they truly cared about our stay in Door County and wanted to make it as fun and action-packed as possible. The Inn itself is in the perfect location, walking distance to the best parts of Sister Bay. The grounds and interior were so beautifully decorated. My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Roots Inn & Kitchen this August when we visited for our honeymoon. This was our first time in Door County and it did not disappoint! Upon arrival, we were greeted by Collin who was friendly and eager to help make our stay perfect. We stayed in the office which was so nicely decorated and made us feel at home. The rest of the Inn is equally as picturesque and so fun to stay at! Breakfast was absolutely fabulous, starting off with warm scones, and ending with a phenomenal breakfast taco made with local ingredients. Collin and Sara were extremely accommodating, offering alt times for breakfast if we couldn't make it during the 8:30 - 9:30 window, and offering to make customizations for any allergies. My wife and I decided to head out to Door County for a winter visit on short notice and stayed at Roots Inn & Kitchen. We had a great visit so I wanted to share our experience. The Inn: The Inn is a beautiful building built in the early 1900's. The owners, Collin and Sara, have owned the Inn for under a year and are currently adding their personal touch to all the rooms. Their renovated Restaurant is attached and is a fantastic place to enjoy your complimentary breakfast if you are a guest or just stop in for lunch or catch a Packer game if you are in town. Location: The location is a short walk to all the best that Sister Bay has to offer including Sister Bay Bowl, Husby's, Door County Creamery, Bier Zot, and Wild Tomato Pizza. The Owners One of the highlights of our trip was enjoying our delicious gourmet breakfasts and getting to know Collin and Sara. Great conversation and a breakfast that was way above and beyond anything I've ever had at a B&B stay. Their passion for what they are doing really shows. All in all, my wife and I learned two valuable things during our trip. First, that visiting Door County in winter is an absolute must for Cross Country Skiing, Hiking, and enjoying some great eats in a more peaceful atmosphere than you'll find during peak season. Secondly, that Roots Inn and Kitchen will be our go to place to stay when we make the trip. They truly care about their guests and really make your stay memorable. So relaxing and peaceful. My girlfriend and I spent a weekend here in April, (their first weekend to be reopened for the season) and it was great. Collin and Sara do an amazing job making you feel welcome and at home. The porch was ideal for reading and relaxing. The rooms are small but very comfortable and well done. The bed was perfect, no soft old mattresses here. And to top it off the breakfasts are delicious!!! Breakfast is served in the bar area and are definitely worth getting out of bed for.... They do a wonderful job creating interesting and tasty dishes each morning. I would highly recommend a weekend here. read more

One of my very favorite things is bearing witness to those who are great at what they do. Two people rocking their profession are Roots Inn hosts Sara and Collin. With rockstar culinary skills and warm, welcoming personalities, this duo makes you feel like you're visiting old friends. Staying at Roots Inn is a great way to experience a B&B without feeling like you're staying in granny's Victorian. The decor is creative and charming - a weathered ladder holds DVDs; an old suitcase houses Door County guidebooks; and original art graces the walls. The Woods room was very cozy and comfortable. But don't expect total silence at any B&B. The other guests' conversations didn't disturb us, but I did learn my neighbor in Room #2 is looking for love on Tinder so sending loads of luck her way. Remember those "rockstar culinary skills" I mentioned earlier? Well, today's breakfast consisted of AMAZING cinnamon scones; a puff pastry filled with homemade pesto, sautéed peppers and mozzarella; watermelon cubes with fresh mint; sausage from a local farm; and orange juice, tea, and coffee. You can't get that at the Day's Inn! If you want your Door County lodging experience to be as memorable as everything else you do while you're in town, stay at Roots. You won't be disappointed. read more

You stay here at the owners' convenience. You eat breakfast when it's convenient for them to "plate" it, which is promptly at 8 a.m. You show up at 8:30 or 8:45 and the kitchen will be locked. You get a complementary drink and homemade appetizer promptly at 4 p.m., unless there is a Packer or Badger game on, which is a time for the proprietors to socialize with their friends. If you show up at 4:15 or 4:20 the kitchen will be locked. Why can't there be a window? Why can't breakfast be from 8 to 9 and cocktail hour from 4 to 5? It seems rather pretentious to "plate" breakfast at 8 a.m. and expect your guests to simply be up for it. So if you are okay with the proprietors setting your schedule for you on your vacation, then the location is very convenient and the accommodations are above average. Are the rooms nice and bed comfortable? Yes. Is the food good (if you happen to get it)? Quite. Expect a place to sleep after enjoying Door County and nothing else. We showed up at 8:45 for breakfast on our first day of vacation hoping we could pick up a muffin, reheat leftovers, just anything to nibble on; the kitchen was locked. Other guests mentioned that this same thing happened to them as well. So we had to be awake and out of bed by 7:45 for the remainder of our stay just to get breakfast. On the final day of our stay, as we were leaving, we noticed the proprietors preparing breakfast at 9:15 for a couple who missed the 8 a.m. meal. I don't know why they were the exception, but it did feel like a "F*ck you!" from the proprietors. They seem like nice enough people, but my stay left me with nothing but contempt for them. read more

My husband and I stayed here for the second time last weekend. It was our first time staying at a bed and breakfast (other than when we stayed here over winter). We love it! We stayed two nights and wish we could have stayed longer. Collin and Sara are extremely welcoming and wonderful hosts. They are very friendly and enjoy making their guests comfortable while having a great time. The food is hands down delicious and creative. There is a restaurant/bar attached that we opted to eat from and spend time in more than around town. We have stayed here once in the dead of winter as a getaway and it was just as pleasant. Cozy, warm getaway that is relaxing and comfortable. We returned this summer with friends and it is a fun place for couples to stay together. We had a group of 4 couples and all really enjoyed the stay. Very clean rooms and clean private bathrooms. They have their own awesome smelling body wash and shampoo. Quiet at night and breakfast was hot and fresh every morning. Lovely private back patio area to eat and drink. Parking was easy as they have their own private lot. Located within seconds to minutes walking distance of everything in Sister Bay. We will definitely be returning in the summer or winter! Both trips were everything we had wanted plus more. Wow. Roots was a new surprise for us despite vacationing up here for the past 20 years. We had lunch today and the sandwich special (salami and home made pesto, peppers and light whipped feta and lemon) was great. As good as that was, the brat with corn and spicy pepper relish on a pretzel roll (with mustard) was great. Great wine and beer choices.
