I was in the area for a few days with my family. I had two GREAT meals. One was at the bar in the Tap Room. Cozy. Quiet. Just right for an adult conversation. The salmon on an open-face egg salad sandwich was just the ticket for this late lunch. The ambiance was so perfect I returned with my kids and two grandsons (5 and 7.) We got a warm and comfortable corner booth which was perfect. The menu was accommodating to adults and kids. I love a restaurant that is joyful and respectful of kids. Kids live up to the expectations! The mushroom soup was rich and worth every calorie. And the plate of salad greens was full of surprises - like tasty tarragon. I was jealous of my daughter who ordered the onion tart. I almost grabbed my son's fried fish sandwich of the day with slaw tumbling out of it. I can't say enough...except one more thing - the price was right!!! for a family! read more

Please note that this place is newly renovated this September so almost all the reviews here aren't relevant. And the one from a week ago I couldn't disagree more with. Right now, the tap room is the only eating place that's up and running, and we really enjoyed it. Fancy bar food is the way to describe it - we had the best fish and chips we've ever had - monkfish (!), and a very New Englandy apple crumble for dessert, but very nicely turned into a very interesting sweet. The fish and chips was done in an excellent batter - not oily at all, super puffy and crisp. We will go back to try this place again. And it should be extra cozy when it gets cold enough for them to set fires in the fireplaces. We recognized a few people who live in Salisbury (including the owner of another restaurant - the Country Bistro), so it looks to become the "in" place for locals who like food. read more

Despite the disappointing experience with the uncontrolled noise in the dining room, we've been back to the dining room and to the tap room several times since. The management was aware of the noise problem in the dining room - they've installed noise-dampening features, and it's much better now. The White Hart has really hit its stride: both in the dining room and the tap room, the food is consistently fine, uses high quality ingredients, and is creatively composed. The service is also consistent, and low key but helpful. The wine list is also notable: there are a lot of fine and not just mainstream wines on the list, and many of them aren't expensive. It's a very well-chosen list, and it doesn't send the message that the White Hart is trying to make a lot of money by selling overpriced wines. Keep up the good work, White Hart! read more

I've been staying here for years. It is by far the best option in the area. Interlaken and others​ have gone downhill​​l but this hotel constantly updates and keeps the building in great shape. Staff is friendly also. The restaurant is ok but nothing to write home about. If they got a 5 star dining experience​ onsite they would be top ten CT contenders. read more

This is for Provisions - the café attached to The White Hart. I came with a friend for coffee and a chat. There was one person ahead of us in the line who ordered a sandwich and a beverage. From the time we got in line to the time we got our coffee 25 MINUTES had passed (not an exaggeration). When my friend inquired politely about the wait, a staff member gave her a snarky comment (there were three people working behind the counter). I ordered an americano, which was very weak. On the plus side, my friend ordered a latte, which she reported to be delicious. I will not be returning to this place, as there are other coffee shops in the area that provide better service. read more

Recently went with a party of 4, none of us left happy. New renovations are beautiful. Annoyingly Pretentious menu. Dry Martini tasted like vermouth and water. Elk chili inedible, tasted like burnt noodles! Ravioli ghastly and served on a Japanese rimless platter! In fact most of the serving ware was inappropriate. Pizza with a gooey crust Fried Duck ... a disaster, nasty. No butter, but a weird spread instead, rolls similar to Wonder Bread! Came in to grab a cup of coffee and edit some pictures, the coffee was great and the vibe was positive. But then out of no where an older lady with blonde, shoulder length hair came out of no where and started raising her voice at another employee. The other employee tried to calm down the situation and requested to talk about what ever the disagreement was about but the blonde lady shut her attempt down and stormed off into what seemed like an office. Regardless of what the situation was about, NO ONE should have to deal with hostility like that at work. It was completely inappropriate behavior to the other employee and also inappropriate behavior infront of customers. Someone needs to be checked and learn to control her emotions. read more

My wife and I stayed at the Inn in February. It was wonderful. The room was immaculate, spacious, and nicely decorated. Every employee we ran into went out of their way to help make us feel at home - including stoking the fire place with fresh logs when they noticed us seated. I wouldn't hesitate a second to stay there again. Salisbury is very special town and having the White Hart Inn back in business, just feels right. read more

We had been told that the dining room would be open on Tuesday, December 26, and so we booked a table and a room at the White Hart for my husband's birthday. I called twice to confirm this and thought we were all set. After we checked into our very expensive room and went down to dinner, we found out that only the Pub and the "garden room" behind the bar were open. We could not have been more disappointed. We wanted a classy, romantic dinner with good food and we ended up with mediocre pub food in a room that looked like a big hall with bad lighting. The staff acted like we made the mistake. They gave us a free drink and a free dessert but it didn't make up for our disappointment and the food. Thanks for ruining my husband's birthday. read more

The White Hart Inn has reopened after three years. The Inn looks wonderful. It has been tastefully redecorated and reconfigured and is now much more like it was before the former owners revamped it. It is now the new old White Hart again. On its first night the bar was hopping and the Tap Room was full. The new menu is wonderful and the food is too. Pretty simple tavern food but very well prepared and the prices are moderate. It is good to have this old stalwart back in town and better than ever. The food (and beer) has been great each time, the service good, the atmosphere wonderful. Prices are upper middle to high-end, at least for the area. My wife and I took our yearly foliage drive up to the Salisbury area and were pleasantly surprised to find the Inn open again. We stopped and had a wonderful lunch of potato and leek soup, a squash, caramelized onion, and goat cheese tart, and a cheeseburger with farm fresh lettuce, tomato and a side of tasty fries. The desserts were both delicious. Our choices were a chocolate and pumpkin creme brûlée and a chocolate tart. I highly recommend you stop and enjoy the Inn yourself. read more

My wife's and I had an amazing experience this weekend at The White Hart. We went in on Friday not expecting much but once my fried hen came to the table and my wife's fish taco we were moved by how amazing the food looked. Then when we began to eat we realized the food tasted even better then it looked. The hen was nice and crunchy on the outside but yet moist and juicy on the inside. The potato salad was out of this world. As for the house made hot sauce I wanted to take a bottle home with me. Highly recommend the white hart if you are looking for a place to eat. read more

The White Hart re-opened with new owners in the late summer of 2014 after an extensive 're-fit'. We visited it on a stormy, wet evening in June and were welcomed warmly before being invited to hang our wet rainwear in a convenient coat cubby and shown to a corner table just off the bar area. The atmosphere was warm and lively but not at all overwhelming, just enough to make us feel we were part of the congenial crowd. The positive initial impression was happily bolstered by our food, which, while obviously traditional in its inspiration, showed, by its flair, the care that had been put into its conception and preparation. It was cooked and presented beautifully but unfussily and served with little delay. We have been going since it opened and every member of our family loves it. For a more casual meal, there is seating available in the bar with cozy tables near a fireplace. I'll preface this review by paraphrasing something Jason Giambi once said after he had been booed mercilessly by Yankee fans after having a terrible few weeks at the plate: people boo because they want to cheer. Having read good things about the White Hart, we were excited to see for ourselves what the place was like. We'd heard the burger was great, the ambience cozy. We showed up on a Saturday night without a reservation and, even though there were several empty tables in both the dining room and tap room, we were told we'd have to wait an hour. No problem. We had a sitter for two+ hours, so we grabbed a beer from the bar and sat on the porch. After 45 minutes, we were shown to one of the tables that had been empty in the tap room when we got our beers. As we sat down, at 8pm, the folks at the table next to us were in the process of angrily leaving after waiting in vain for their food to come to the table. They said they'd waited for an hour and a half. Undaunted, we ordered our food: a burger and a steak. Long story short: we waited 1:15 for the food to come out, and were told by the waiter that they had accepted too many reservations and every walk-in, so there was a big back up. The waiter was apologetic, but that was the extent of it. He asked us if we wanted to order another round of drinks, and we declined; we didn't want to pay for waiting for our food. Meanwhile, the table across from us got dinner, drinks, dessert, more drinks, and the bill while we waited for our meal. I would be more sympathetic if they were really slammed, but having seen the dining room and tap room each with empty tables upon our arrival, we knew better. When the food came out, it was lukewarm. Clearly it had been sitting around a while. When our check came, the waiter said our drinks were comped. It would have been a nicer gesture had they mentioned the comped drinks as we waited for our food. It was pretty clear that they didn't care too much about their customers' experience. Bottom line: don't bother with this place unless you're prepared to wait a long time for lukewarm food and mediocre service. I know they have some big deal celebrity owners, but that's probably a good indication that no one's paying attention to quality or customer service. It's too bad because it's a cool building, there's some illustrious history, and the place has lots of potential. There are much better options in the immediate area. read more

We know we will have a satisfying meal and that there is something on the menu for everyone. I always order fish, either the tuna burger or fish and chips, but lately the chef has been turning out seasonal soups that are sensational. Desserts are consistently delicious. Tried going here twice this weekend and had bad experiences both times. Tried going for lunch yesterday and was told the kitchen closed at 2:00. It was 2:05 and my friend and I apparently were expected to sit while other guests were brought their lunch. I could understand if the restaurant was busy but there was hardly anyone there. Came back again today and all I can say is the attitude we for from the waitress was why are you bothering me. Completely non-friendly atmosphere. It's too bad because it's a great building and nice spot but if the employees continue to have an arrogant non-friendly attitude I don't see this place being around for very long. read more

First of all I would like to start by saying for the previous reviewer Jon F, to say "almost all the reviews listed aren't relevant" I couldn't disagree with him more. On 9/19 a Friday evening I was there with a group of possible 15. We met and sat in a room I guess it would face route 44, It looked like a conference room with dinner tables. The acoustics's in this room was horrible! Of course you'd expect other dinner guest to complain because our party was too loud! It was a party!! Why put a group of people in this room? The walls were bare nothing stood out in the room. It was cold and uninviting! People in the group were served wine which looked to me- water glasses. Everyone's talking- and an announcement was made by the manager that we needed to order. Before his announcement I had to ask for a bar/appetizer menu- REALLY!! It's as if the Manager due to complaints, which were of their doing was rushing us out of the place. Now, my meal. I ordered a Caesar salad which was horrible! It didn't appear to have a Caesar sauce. The Parmesan was sliced not grated. I had an egg cut in half, and the Romaine lettuce wasn't cut up. I asked for medium rare steak and I received rare.Honestly I eat it both ways, however the meat was tasteless and I didn't have any Caesar sauce to mixed the steak in. Not a good meal at all! One of my friends had a salad -different-and her's she also mention it was horrible. Now Jon F spoke of the Fish and Chips a member of our group ordered the same and liked it .Hopefully, this isn't their only specialty! What disturbed me the most was when I left I had something caught in my throat. It took a slice of bread when I got home, to get what ever it was to go down. All I will say at this time-I will not go back! The warmth of the old Inn certainly wasn't there. Maybe its because you have people who own the place who don't have a lot of restaurant experience! The Tap Room at the White Hart has fantastic hamburgers, prepared rare if you ask; juicy and mouthwatering with a nicely toasted bun and roasted slice of onion. I also love the lamb burger and occasional swordfish burger. Sunday nights, there's something new: Sunday Night Roast. I had roast pork and roasted winter vegetables. Tender, flavorful, and comforting. Wednesday nights, they host a local band or guitar player, which adds a nice ambience. Winter the roaring fireplace crackles and summer the covered porch beckons. New England craft beers top it all off with my favorite beverage. I love Old Burnside Ten Penny Ale or Stony Creek Amber. I can't say much about the wines, but David, the bartender, would probably give you a taste and advice. He also makes an amazing spiked hot chocolate! Too good to pass up! The White Hart tries hard to please, and not just please New Yorkers... I live locally and feel welcome whenever I cross the door sill. Which is more and more often. read more

I must say the pub room is one of the most delightful spots. It has gastropub panache and feels quite authentic (I long ago tired of the contrived decor that seems to be so common in restaurants these days). A perfect refuge on a damp winters day. The food was terrific, but the table service quite spotty. For a simple lunch or drinks and apps - a real delight. Just ate at the bar on Nov 30th, Bartender, a female, had a great personality, served us all very well. Wish all places had such a great attitude working behind the bar. The White Hart has been a favorite of our family for decades. The recent renovation is expertly done: light, clean color pallette, beautiful hardwood flooring throughout the first floor, elegant well-appointed rooms, with lovely linens. We ate in the Tap Room twice - and enjoyed our meal each time. Don't miss the housemade chips with clam dip. The breakfast was quite minimal but tasty. The only real disappointment was the lack of coffee in the room - or anywhere in the hotel before 7 a.m. This early riser was climbing the walls by the time coffee was available downstairs. A simple single cup Keurig in each room would easily solve this omission. We look forward to returning to the White Hart, as we are in the area several times each year. read more

If you haven't been to the White Hart in a while be aware that it has been completely renovated and is now very elegant, very high end. The tap room is a gem and is unchanged. But the new dining rooms and menu are very elegant and refined. Most of the food is raised at the farm a few miles down the road owned by the inn...great, fresh ingredients. I've been twice and have enjoyed it both times....but again if you haven't been in a while be prepared it is TOTALLY different and very much more upscale than it was a year ago. read more

Absolutely delicious food! The new chef is SPOT on with the menu! It's a welcome addition to the area. We've eaten more than five times already since the new opening, and the food has been exceptional. The specials are always intriguing and done very well. Our first lunch we had the patty melt, which was done so well I dreamed about it for days. We had the pleasure of having the head chef prepare it the first time and I quickly realized we were spoiled. The only reason that I didn't give five stars is because, the consistency thereafter was subpar for the patty melt. They weren't cooked very well the next couple times and it turned us off how raw and sloppy it was prepared. (The only other minor criticism would be that the food could come out a bit hotter.) Anyway, EVERYTHING else we've ordered has been exceptional. We've enjoyed the bolognese preparation, the lamb burger, the lamb balls, the chicken liver mousse, duck shepherd's pie and the pork terrine. Oh, and my favorite is the black bean chili with melt in your mouth cornbread! Oh, and one more favorite of ours is the onion tart -- it's perfect! I'm particularly impressed with the beer list. Any list with two stouts and a porter is after my heart. We definitely give the White Hart four thumbs up! read more
