We had a group of 18 traveling to Richmond from Michigan for a Thanksgiving field hockey tournament. I had one of the best dining experiences of my life at The Wooden Spoon. This restaurant is located off Paterson near a few other small business. Although small this place is filled with charm. The restaurant has an enchanting warmth and coziness to it that just makes you feel at home. On Saturday nights they make Paella from 5-8 and it's delicious!! I had the pleasure of living in Spain for a few years and could taste the authenticity of my meal. Each bite took me to a sweet memory from many years ago. Oddly enough the owner had family members from the same region in Spain that I lived in. The staff enhanced made my already delicious dinner with their sincerity and great conversations. Lightly sprinkled with powdered sugar and with maple syrup and an incredible berry compote on the side!! Magical! But that's not all folks, this breakfast also comes with two organic eggs, meaty bacon, or other protein choice, and house potatoes! I stopped into the Wooden Spoon last month for lunch for the first time. All I can say is that it won't be my last visit. There was one server and one chef handling all diners and take-out orders. And they were hustling! We had to wait a pretty long time, but the little cafe has such a calming and welcoming vibe that we didn't mind much. I started with a latte, which was delicious. For my meal, I was a little startled by the $17 price tag but still opted for the Bocata Iberico sandwich. The description sounded too good to pass up. It arrived open-faced with Spanish ham and manchego cheese (love!) on crusty bread rubbed in olive oil. Oh my goodness. What an elegant sandwich. The salad it came with was also quite tasty. This place is very charming and serves quality food and wine. The menu is authentic and well thought out. The ingredients are definitely fresh. The downside is that the website is a little contradictory in that it reads "by reservation only" and right below enthusiastically states, "walkins welcome!" Turns out you need a reservation to order paella or other main entre, which I assume they have even though I didn't have access to the main course menu. You can only order tapas without a reservation. The tapas were just as I remembered them in Spain. However, they were expensive for what they were. A tortilla (potatoes, onions, and eggs) was $18 and a small bowl of patatas bravas (fried potatoes with mayo-based sauce) was $16. Finally got to try the Wooden Spoon after going to Spain for the first time. I've been missing paella so much. If you want good paella, check this place out. Husband and I wandered in here on a Wednesday evening when we were in Libbie area of RVA and looking for a happy hour/light dinner fare. The service was impeccable and the owner/chef is so sweet and invested in your experience. We had the zucchini carpaccio app which was delicious. Got to check this place out last month and it was DELICIOUS!!! Decided to check this place out during my lunch break with a coworker and have no regrets (I'm actually planning on coming here again today for another lunch date haha). Okay, so I don't normally leave reviews, because normally even "good" restaurants don't make me want to take the time to write a review. This one does. If I could give 10 starts instead of 5, I would. I cannot give enough praise to The Wooden Spoon and the people who have so clearly devoted their whole selves to it. My fiancé and I arrived there not knowing if we would be able to sit down because it was reservation only on a Friday, but we were met personally by the chef, Yvette, and the waitress, Erin. It is a very intimate restaurant that makes you feel at home immediately. We chatted with Yvette and Erin most of the night, and it was truly one of the better restaurant experiences that have ever had. I haven't even gotten to the food yet. Oh my GOSH. When I say the food is out of this world... So normally, I have a very sensitive stomsch. I am easily agitated by food with aggressive spices, and unfortunately often upset by Spanish food (Americanized Spanish food, I should clarify). Almost all of the ingredients at this restaurant are imported from Spain, and when I say they were delicious and did not upset my stomach in the least, I mean it. All the reviews rave that if you want an authentic paella that you should come here and we agree! *Paella must be ordered in advance since it's not a fast dish to make, good things take time. It was so easy and simple to place the reservation; she has a quick template for you to follow on her website. Our server Luis was great and started us off with some fresh bread and dip, it was focaccia I believe. We all loved it, even my kids devoured it. We tried the mixta paella (seafood, chicken and vegetables) it was so delicious, I'm not a even huge fan of squid (my husband is) but I ended up eating them! And it's served with a homemade aioli that I wish I could put on everything. It was lemony and garlicky, just amazing. Tapas was beautifully prepared - which does not require a reservation - we tried the tortilla espanola, a Spanish potato and onion omelette (very filling, so save some room if you ordered paella which is comes at the end) served with an addictive homemade brava sauce! Not too spicy but it's got a kick to it. My in laws loved the patatas bravas. Chef Yvette even came out to check on us, told us a bit of her story and explained some of her sauces. We had a lovely dinner here last weekend. The small, quaint interior and menu made us feel like we were in a bistro in Costa Brava. My husband doesn't eat paella, so we decided to make a meal out of tapas. Everything we tried was fresh and well-prepared. We had the shrimp ajillo, zucchini ajillo, patatas brava and steak board. The potatoes and smoky sauce were outstanding, and my husband could have drank the chimichurri sauce that was with served with the steak. Today my bf and I went for brunch in attempt to give this place a second shot. The first time we went (last month) was not the best experience but it was more due to the service. 1. The server never brought our ordered drinks. 2. My bf ordered the tomato soup and grilled cheese. When it arrived it was missing the soup. When he asked where the soup was, he was told they are all out. She offered the potato soup in its place to which he said ok, but the soup didn't arrive until after we both were done eating. I really enjoyed my meal. I had the veggie quiche with a pancake on the side. They were both AMAZING! Hence why I wanted to try it again. Today was another disappointing experience. The server let us know they were short handed and to bear with them, ok no big deal. Last time time the service was slower so expected it. My bf ordered the breakfast sandwich on a croissant, he was told they were out so a brioche bun was the only option. He's not picky so said ok and asked for a pancake on the side too. I ordered the quiche again, Lorraine this time. Our meal didn't take too long to arrive but when it did my quiche was cold af. Last time it was piping hot. But I was starving so ate it anyway. If the server had come back to ask how everything was, I would've told her and maybe have it heated but she didn't. Lastly, the side pancake was 1/2 the size as our last visit. Yvette catered our wedding of 160 people and did amazing! The paella was very affordable, dietary friendly (vegan and gluten free option) and beyond delicious. The serving process was extremely smooth (smoothest our day of coordinator has ever seen) and guests loved being able to watch the cooking process. It has been a month and our guests are still talking about how incredible the paella was and that they have never been so satisfied with wedding food before. Went to The Wooden Spoon last night to celebrate mine and my brother in-laws birthdays and I have to say it was wonderful! From the moment you walked in, you are transported to a small chic European restaurant. The AC was out but in my opinion it only added to the ambiance. Yvette and her staff were wonderful and attentive. I corresponded with her prior to make reservations and set up our pre- order for our paellas. We started with bread with an olive oil/ herb blend or aioli, all of which we're incredible. We ordered the Shrimp Ajillo, the Zucchini Carpaccio, the Tortilla Española, the toasted ravioli, and the patatas bravas as our tapa starters. The stars for me were the shrimp and the zucchini- both were fresh and delicious. The paella deserves it's own paragraph. As a Cuban- Miami native, I have had my fair share of paellas. So speaking from experience, we ordered the traditional mariscos paella and the langosta and mariscos paella and they we're both incredible. Really and truly one of the best paellas I've ever had. Rice was perfectly cooked, seafood was fresh and also cooked to perfection. I am already looking forward to returning just to have this again.. I would say one paella can feed about 3 hungry people. Finally, the most pleasant surprise- Yvette brought out 2 pound cakes- one with homemade chocolate bourbon sauce and one made with her homemade limoncello- all I can say was both we're BY FAR the BEST desserts I have had in a very very long time. Wow, what a lovely small family-run restaurant! My husband and I pre-ordered the paella negra and were greedy and had a couple of tapas too. This was a lot of food for two and we enjoyed it thoroughly, and took a little home for lunch! The garlic shrimp were so savory and plump, the honey-drizzled eggplant was delicious and like nothing we had tried before. I can be fussy with seafood paella but this was a perfect combination of textures and savory flavors, and not "fishy". Service was friendly and unobtrusive. The wonderful owner is of Spanish heritage and actually goes back and forth to the kitchen to cook and/or supervise the cooking. She will recommend things, she will tell you about what's good, what is and is not on the menu that day. This is a hidden gem with limited hours but what a delight. Sit at the bar, have a chat, have a glass of wine and some patatas bravas or another tapas offering. Don't expect speed - this is a small operation - but what you get is personal attention from a person who truly believes in what she's doing. She would rather serve something delicious and talk to her customers than compromise the ideal. The highlight on this menu (which I did not try) were the varied and extensive paella offerings. Even if you get them to go (this was the impressive part!) customers may take the paella in a casuela (the cast iron skillet) for a small deposit and it is returned when the casuela is returned. Wow! I had the pleasure of meeting Rachel and Carlos, two of the team's excellent folks who keep the place humming. As I discover new places, I tend to favor places which pay close attention to details surrounding the diner's experience. Everywhere you look is a delight - from the muted blue umbrellas to the distressed wall tableaus. Gentle low-volume music greets you as you enter the cafe and enhances your time there. Aromas of savory cooking, baking, strong coffee, and fresh pastry hint at what's to come. She told us that due to Covid, her priorities shifted and now she's going to do private dinners and turn half of her restaurant into a cute tapas, charcuterie and wine bar!! We met the owner/chef, Yvette, and the bartender/server Carlos....both were friendly and happy to answer our questions regarding the menu items and the specials. I ordered the 3 cheese grilled cheese sandwich...yum...and the homemade tomato soup....again....delicious. The server said that the soup contains like 23 items and spices.....it tasted like Thanksgiving/Christmas....and when I asked, found that it was the cloves and cinnamon that I was tasting! It was served nice and hot, along with salad and fresh fruit cup. My husband had the buffalo burger....again...delicious and cooked to order. His also came with salad and fruit. The atmosphere was very cherry and bright, nicely decorated, and very welcoming. They have various specials....this Saturday will be a paella bar, presented by a special guest chef. We will be returning this Friday, because Yvette is making homemade split pea soup....an absolute fav of my husbands! When we parked in the back of the restaurant, we were welcomed with the wonderful smells of pork belly on the smoker. This time I ordered the pancakes, which were delicious...not like the ones you find at IHOP for sure! My husband had the pork belly sandwich....he kept rolling his eyes in pure delight! He gave me a bite as I have never tasted pork belly before...ewe....but I honestly have to say I would order this any day of the week!!! WE WILL BE BACK SOON!!!! read more
