This is my third time here at Maidens Cafe. Pro's: Food is very fresh especially the salads. The salads come in a big plastic bowl which is so nice to mix in the salad dressing. A bit over priced for location It use to be a gas station converted to a cafe. It's a very comfortable cozy look they definitely put some thought in making it look pretty and updated. Small gem located on route 522. I have passed this many times and we stopped there today after my hairdresser HIGHLY recommended it. A few seats inside and some seating outside. Known for their sandwiches, they did not disappoint. Very fast service and when I pointed out the fountain drink of Coke Zero was out, they replenished RIGHT AWAY. I got the chicken salad combo that comes with a side, a drink and a cookie! The fries were perfect and the chicken salad comes on a buttery croissant. Highly recommend and we WILL be back! read more

First trip, on a recommendation. Let me say this up front, if you're not paying attention, could drive right by and never know, except for the cars in the parking lot. Upon arrival there was a great aroma coming from this little roadside joint (cafe). Once inside was met and greeted by a wonderful gal that was quick with a hello then to get an order. Small interior, don't think about bringing the whole team. Couple spots outside with seating if the weathers good. Buildings a bit dated but didn't detract from my hunger. Looks like a small owner business taking care of locals. Tried the chicken bacon ranch (without ranch) sandwich and onion rings. You get a cookie if you order the combo, homemade believe or not, drink too. Sandwich was full of goodness and quite large. Veggies are fresh crisp and bright with color. Not sure what they did to the onion rings, or it being a long time since indulging, but they are cooked and seasoned perfectly. Not bad for $15. Have tried both lunch and breakfast here based solely on the reviews posted. This is the main purpose of why I'm leaving a review. We really need to start being more honest and upfront when reviewing because people come here for the purpose of choosing where they spend their hard earned money and valuable time. They have options and reviews strongly influence the choices. We can do better than all the fluffy reviews that can't possibly be legit or helpful to anyone--the owners/management, or those counting on what they may actually experience. Overpriced. Without a doubt. I know pretty much all businesses are struggling over inflated costs on every front in the past 3-4 years, 2020-2024. All Americans are struggling buying groceries and gas and paying insane taxes. It impacts businesses and especially small businesses. However, my review is both old and new. It's overdue. Having tried this place 5 years ago more than once and again more recently, I can say from experience they've been consistently overpriced for the little you get in return. Skimpy sandwiches and sides. Overcooked dry, tasteless food. We can be honest here and admit that our sandwiches made at home are more filling. And we should, at the very least, receive equivalent when dining out. We are paying three times what our's cost and asked to tip counter/register help on top of it. We should feel satisfied when leaving, in general. Bland. The food is bland and slow arriving. I wish I could say it's the friendly, upbeat and helpful service that would keep me returning...but I can't. Remember, this review is about honesty. The employees appear to not want to be bothered by customers placing orders. Crack a smile. Lift your head. Make eye contact. Ask if you can help, offer any Specials information or changes or additions to the menu, without having to be asked. That's service. Even if you don't mean it, try to make customers believe you're glad they came by. It's really unfortunate because there are so few good places in the area, or in general these days, to grab a bite, a cup of coffee, to sit in a clean, comfortable or cozy space with a friend or two, or with family, or even just on your own and to feel it's worth the drive and extra expense to dine out. You won't find that here either. The dining area needs a good thorough cleaning/scrubbing that appears far more overdue than my review. Seriously folks. It needs cleaning. And if the customer's seating areas need cleaning this badly what must the kitchen areas, where the food is prepared, look like that customers are not able to see? It matters. Service, efficiency, and customer care matters. Food that makes you say, wow! or yum! or so glad I drove here! Or I don't mind paying a little extra for good portions and tasty food and good service! ...matters. All of these things matter. They are what gives a business repeat, loyal, honest customers. They keep tables and registers full. And we know those things matter too. Don't let such an opportunity of being a place worth driving to, worth choosing over others, worth remembering and coming back again and again slip through your fingers, owners/staff. The opportunity for being great is a few meaningful adjustments away. More than any of these, customers want to feel like the business actually cares what they think about their experience there, and it shows. Hope you get your passion for this back. It will show. A seemingly unsuspecting place sitting off the side of a street in Powhatan, VA, The Cafe at Maidens is proof that looks can be deceiving. The decor is old and dilapidated, but don't let that fool you; this place purposefully has this appearance in order to establish the mood it wants to set. The service is friendly and approachable. The young girl at the counter cracked jokes and made some quality recommendations. I ended up getting one of the sandwiches she jokingly suggested, and it was delicious. Everything was reasonably priced. That segues this review into talking about the food. Honestly? Some of the best pancakes I have ever had. The batter is made in-house. These flap jacks were the perfect combination of flaky and soft. The flavors of these pancakes (PANCAKES, PEOPLE!) hits you in waves. They added cinnamon into the batter, but it's neither overwhelming nor underwhelming. The hash browns were the second highlight of my friend's meal. Everything about The Big Breakfast screams one word: QUALITY. As for my sandwich, I got the Elvis. If you love strange sandwiches, then this banana, bacon and peanut butter sandwich is sure to impress you. I might return just to try another sandwich just like this one! Love, love, love this hidden gem! I will drive 45 minutes to get here if I am craving a good sandwich. If there is a sandwich shop comparable in the Richmond area, I have yet to find it. I usually get the Powhatan Club (pictured) which is stacked with meat and cheese. It's so large I can only eat half of it and then save the other half for later. Getting a combo is the best way to go, where you can pick three items to accommodate your sandwich. Service is always friendly and quick. Stopped by here while working in the area. It was recommended to me by a local farmer. It is a little sandwich shop like you would find in a city and the sandwich selection is vast. It was the best Reuben I've ever had! The lemonade was on point also. Will most certainly stop here again. They also sell local grown and processed sunflower oil. It is the best! read more

A small but quaint local place to have breakfast or lunch. Came here with my wife and father in law, and we all really enjoyed our sandwiches. My father in law got a Philly cheese steak, my wife got the rachel, and I got the the roast beef sandwich that had horseradish mayo on it. We all 3 passed around each sandwich for a taste, and I must say, all 3 were quite good. You can combo your meal with fries or you can choose a combo style that lets you get a small side (or bag of chips), A drink and a cookie. I chose the latter and my family chose the former. After driving by for years I finally decided to stop in as a test. So glad that I did. I had the Powhatan Club sandwich, fries (seasoned) and iced tea. Great fresh sandwich and the fries were hot, crisp and light. The tea is self serve so refills are a go which is a nice bonus. I sat at the bar and watched a tennis match on the flat screen.
