It was easy to find the bakery and parking on a Friday morning! What can I say - I'm a fan of anything mochi ! Strawberry guava and black sesame were my favorite ! While we were in Berkeley, Phillip L. and I looked up Third Culture Bakery and stopped by. The lady in front of us chatted us up and raved about how much she loved this bakery... so we had high expectations! Their display is gorgeous... especially since they have a ton of flavors! - Mochi muffin ($3.95): we had the butter mochi and ube mochi. Both were mm mm good! - Mochi brownie ($3.95): I don't eat chocolate, but my Phil really liked this - Butter mochi donuts ($3 / $3.25): strawberry and cream, Vietnamese coffee, mango passionfruit, black sesame, and guava cheesecake My favorite flavors for the donuts were strawberry and cream and guava cheesecakes. They're not as QQ as I'm used to (mochi-wise), but I thought the items were all so yummy! read more

A cute bakery in more industrial, artsy part of town. This reminds of something you would find in SF's Mission district. The interior was very industrial but chic. All of the mochi donuts and muffins were displayed behind a glass. They were on the pricier side ($3 each). There wasn't any indoor seating but out in front there was a long bench and a couple of pink stools! We came Friday around noon so there was no line when we got there! [ Jasmine Green Tea Mochi Donut ] The tea flavor was very strong and the frosting wasn't super sweet! I highly recommend this donut for someone who is looking for something less sugary. [ Mango Passionfruit Mochi Donut ] To be honest I chose this donut because I wanted one with yellow (my favorite color) frosting! It was very delicious and a lot sweeter than the jasmine mochi donut. read more

I finally got to try the famous third Culture Bakery and I must say it was super good . I have never tried mochi donuts and they are better then normal donuts . Regular donuts can get greasy at times but the mochi donuts felt satisfying . The place is cute small , it's more a to go type of place . Staff was nice . Love love loved everything! I came by on a Saturday around 10:30 and there was no line! I was a little overwhelmed by the number of flavors and varieties I had to stand there for a moment to admire. I got a thai tea and churro custard cake, a jasmine milk tea, sesame, mango passion fruit, and strawberry guava donut to bring home as well as a matcha latte. I would say the highlight would definitely be their Thai tea custard cake! So moist and so flavorful! read more

Definetly worth the 45 minute drive! I tried the ube muffin, a thai coffee donut and a matcha latte with oat milk. I had originally meant to save half of each sweet for later, but at one point I looked down and it was all gone. So needless to say I will return. Also I like to give them kudos for the hand sanitizer station. Super cute and thoughtful! read more

Truthfully it's too difficult not to give them the full five stars rating, I was very very close to buy "one of every flavor" -- but was able to display some self control and only chose the bare minimum I would settle for. Their donuts all have the same base dough... it is the topping glaze that varies in flavors - believe me, you'd think it's just a glaze but don't be fooled! The thai tea is one of my faves as with the strawberry cream! The muffins however is flavored dough! Totally recommend the ube and black sesame! As far as the drinks go, got the lychee cold brew and it was interesting... not bad, but not gonna be my choice anymore. My cousin got the burnt caramel matcha latte and it was freakin deelish that I was sad that I had made the wrong choice of drink... Now, these marvelous mochi goods are definitely pricey compared to regular donuts and muffins but I think it's nice way to support a local business that gives back to the community and as a treat to myself! read more

3.8 stars-we found parking right in front, yay! I have been wanting to come here for the past few months, the place is really nice-I wish they have a place to sit down to relax. Afterall, we did pay $4+ per donut! Luckily, we came right before the crowd. There was only one person in front of us, and when we will done- it was about 12 people in line in just minutes. I bought six pastry and a drink for $28 Including tips. Sadly, I wasn't crazy about the drink, looked great making it but the drink tasted awful- ok I'm not a huge matcha tea fan. I don't understand why there isn't a menu with the price, I was a bit embarrassed to ask about the price-I don't want to sound cheap for asking?? So I just order a few, and wow! Feel like I'm in LA buying Blue Star donut again, another rip off place for $4 donuts. But knowing me, I had to try everything once! The donuts here were different, chewy and sweet- I can see why people love it! It just not my cup of tea. read more

I'm not much of a mochi gal. I find them to be oddly chewy or extremely gummy (there's a difference), so when I landed on this mochi donut from Academic Coffee, I had to locate its source. Finally made my way out to Berkeley and tried some other flavors, and they did not disappoint. Also, a helpful tip I received from the worker... mochi is dependent on the external temperature. On colder days, mochi may tend to be more harder, and deemed not good. The solution? Pop it into the microwave and warm it up for a couple of seconds:). I grabbed the passion fruit donut, matcha muffin, and churro donut. All three were deeeelish! read more

i really have to fight myself to not gatekeep this bay area gem. if you come here and you've never had a mochi pastry before, start with your OG mochi muffin before branching out to your other flavors! Texture for the other flavors can be a little different, so keep this in mind. read more

TL;DR: amazing baked good selection, great Mochi Muffin, little pricey Although a little far from my location, Third Culture has appeared on my radar as a spot that's worth the distance. I was impressed with the variety in treats they had and the freshness of their goods. You're really getting what you pay for with these baked goods and I'm excited to return in the future to try even more options! I got a Mochi Muffin and Match Mochi Doughnut. MOCHI MUFFIN (5/5) - Small in size, little high in price, but REALLY DENSE WITH FLAVOR - Their main baked good for great reason - Probably really good paired with a drink (tea or coffe) MATCHA MOCHI DOUGHNUT (4/5) - Really subtle glaze that makes the entire doughnut - Similar material to the muffin - So many different flavors to choose from I can tell all of the staff is really friendly and helpful. Although the prices of the baked goods are a bit higher than I'm used to, you know that you're getting them for cheaper than you can buy them at other coffee shops in the area. For me, it's pretty far, but I'm excited to make the journey to come back and try more options on another weekend morning! read more

Saw an IG post of these glorious wheels so the first thing I had to do was of course make an early morning drive from south bay to here. I have to say I do like these a little bit more than the MoDo donuts. I came here with my brother and I think I went a little overboard because we got way too much for two dudes. Honestly, the donuts were relatively all the same. It just depends on what frosting you got. We should have stopped with 2 each but we got greedy. Out of all the flavors we got, I really like the pumpkin spice. Everything else was good but not all that different from one another. Also, it was a bit expensive so keep that in mind. I don't remember how much, it was one of those just get it and pay for it later kind of moments. I was told about a special waffle they make but totally forgot about it when I arrived so I think next time I'll get that. My uncle who went later that day said it was exquisite and hearing that from a fobby Asian means a lot! read more

With mochi muffins taking over the Bay Area, I had to drop by to check out Third Culture's bakery. Beautiful open space where you can see the crew making all of the muffins for the entire bay area! There isn't much in terms of seating inside, but there is plenty of outside seating. The counter is simple and presents all of the tasty treats. You will need to ask about the matcha drinks that are available. The staff is extremely friendly and the drinks are made to order. Matcha is made the traditional way with a bowl and small whisk. I ordered a matcha latte, which was spectacular: a perfect matcha flavor and light rice milk with a bit of sweetness from honey. The mochi waffle I ordered was a bit of a wait, but very much worth it! Lightly crunchy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside with amazing cream and chocolate on top. I cannot recommend the waffle enough! Definitely check out Third Culture Bakery before lines are out the door. read more

I'm a big fan of traditional mochi desserts so I was excited to stop by Saturday. I tried an assortment to share w hubby - 2 custard cakes and 4 donuts appx $20 I really enjoyed the custard cakes over the donuts. The consistency of the cakes were soft on the inside and muffin firm on the outside. They were mildly sweet. Both Ube and Matcha custard cakes were yummy I didn't care much for the donuts. They were soft on top and a little too chewy bottoms. I had chocolate, ube coconut, mango and blueberry Of those flavors the ube and mango complimented the donut best. ONE WORD: DELICIOUS!!! I have been wanting to try this place for the longest time after seeing all their posts on Instagram and glad I finally made a trip! Showed up around 2pm on a Sunday and they had a lot of stuff in stock! I'm glad because I was worried they were gonna sell out or something after reading reviews saying they had lots of lines. Staff was super friendly and sweet. Got 4 Mochi donuts: Strawberries and Cream, Ube, Dark Chocolate and Guava Cheesecake and 2 Ube Mochi muffins! SO GOOD! I love that the donuts are buttery and the flavors go so well too! The muffins were THICC. I also got their Banana Bread Pudding for my BF and he LOVED IT!!! He said it didn't taste much like Banana tho... still good he inhaled that bread pudding on the car ride back home. Spent about $30 on 7 items and it was TOTALLY worth it. There's probably always a line for this place as everybody takes their time ooh-ing and aah-ing and taking pictures of the Instagram-worthy desserts when they get inside the small store. Mochi and custard makes everything better! Third Culture mochi donuts have fun flavors like black sesame, yuzu lemon, jasmine milk tea and strawberry guava. Don't miss getting a couple of the delicious custard cakes too! When I went, they had ube and churro flavored custard cakes. The only disappointing thing at Third Culture for me was the Matcha Latte. Tried this for the first time and I was definitely very impress with how wide the variety of their menu was. Not to mention, I was also very happy and satisfied with their services, everyone was so welcoming & very accommodating. They also helped me & my family to pick out the good goods by walking us through the best ones on the menu. I love, loveee how their goods are bake (& not fried). The mochi texture is definitely unique and filling. Also, The flavors they offer aren't that common so there's a thrill and a bit of an adventure. You'll get a chance to try out something you haven't tried before. Plus, The store was aesthetically pleasing. I walked out of the store with smile on my face, a happy tummy + a whole day made. Wow. I came to Third Culture on a Friday morning, about 20 minutes after they opened their doors. No wait and a perfect Instagrammable shot of all the goodies. I originally ordered the Ube Custard Cake and Jasmine Milk Tea Donut. The nice gentleman also recommended the Black Sesame Donut as they mill their own sesame in-house. There was no wrong choice. The sesame comes through very strongly where as with the Milk Tea Donut, the jasmine hits first before the milk tea does. Lastly, I ordered a match latte with soy milk. Not too sweet and the matcha is prevalent. Heads up: They DO NOT accept cash. They have an explanation near the register as to why they choose to be credit only and how it helps maintain cleanliness. read more

After salivating at all the pictures I finally get to try this place! Going into Berkeley was not in my foreseeable future as I dread parking. However, in light of the COVID 19 lockdown (praying it is over soon), I used UberEats for the first time and had free delivery! Although still paid for the service charge and tip lol. It made it a costly treat. But, I tried it, and I am an avid mochi lover. LOVE! For delivery you can only get 1/2 dozen mochi muffins (assorted or original) $24 or $48 dozen, 1/2 dozen donuts (assorted) $18, dozen $36 and a few drink items. Price point was on the higher side but, again, I Love Mochi and wanted to support small business. My order arrived in great time (under an hour). I got 1/2 dozen asst muffins, 1/2 dozen asst donuts. The donuts were pretty good. I didn't know what to expect. I think I needed more chewiness to it. I liked the ube coconut, strawberry I think, maybe guava, and the passion fruit with cocoa nibs. I had no idea what the flavors were. The black sesame was too much for me, didn't like it at all. The muffins to my surprise I liked the most. My daughter too. These had more of the mochi chewiness we were longing for. My favorite was the original. The ube and churro was also good. Black sesame, heavens no! Matcha was okay too. Overall pretty solid 3.5 but rounded to 4. If we could pick the specific flavors it would've been better, but it was delivery. Price point was a bit on the higher side too. I'm glad we tried it but it's something we won't get on the daily as it's out of the way and pricy. But do try at least once if you love mochi. It's in my blood! read more

I tried this bakery out for the first time and it was pretty decent. The store was decorated beautifully! However, I do think that the donuts and the muffins were quite pricey and were not really worth $3 and up. I also got the lychee soda but I didn't realize I was supposed to mix it in the beginning so I just had a huge sip of lychee purée and then the remaining 4/5 of the cup was basically just carbonated water. Ended up throwing it out after drinking just half. I got the pumpkin matcha latte as well and it was just grainy and kind of just average. They also charged an extra dollar because they used oat milk which I think they should state on their menu (the menu just says it's $4.75 "with a milk of your choice.") However, one thing that I really really enjoyed from this bakery was the original mochi muffin (forgot to take a picture). I think it tasted the best out of all seven pastries that I purchased, highly recommend. Overall, a cute bakery but I would really only come back for the muffins. read more

Established in 2017.

Chef Sam and Wenter dated for 9 months before starting the bakery officially in April 2017 with just the Mochi Muffin - it was a 2 man show for the first 8 months, doing everything themselves from baking, dishwashing, delivering, invoicing, everything! The bakery quickly grew to a team of 18+ full timers servicing over 60+ wholesale accounts throughout the Bay Area with their own Retail location in West Berkeley where they showcase the full Third Culture experience. The bakery exists because of love and hopes to share that love one Mochi Muffin at a time.

It depends. You can be lucky and have no wait, as happened to me, but moments later the line was out the door.

There are definitely donuts during the week. There is free street parking and you can definitely find a spot, if not in front then on neighboring streets.

I found some at Boba Guys. And their muffins (matcha, mochi and another one) were also served at Teance Fine Teas in Berkeley.

Yes according to their Instagram 10-4pm.

Does anyone know how much anything costs? There is no amount on anything on the menu nor does it mention the price of the baked goods.

Mochi donuts are $3.00-3.25 (depends on if it's regular or seasonal flavor) and the mochi muffins and custard cakes are $3.75.

The line moved really slow because there was only one employee handling everything. She was taking orders, giving samples, answering questions, and ringing people up all at once. She was super friendly and doing her best, but it felt like a lot for one person during a rush and the shop could definitely use more help. The space is really small and tight so it was hard to even see the flavors until we got close to the front. When we finally got up there, a lot of the tubs were already empty which was confusing since most ice cream shops restock. Some flavors I wanted weren't available anymore, and if they're out it would make more sense to just remove them from display. The dirty containers didn't make sense to display. I sampled the jasmine green tea and knew right away I wanted it. It was creamy with a smooth tea flavor that wasn't overpowering. I got a small with half jasmine green tea and half avocado. The avocado was surprisingly really good, super creamy and tasted like a fresh avocado smoothie. Both flavors weren't overly sweet which I liked. My husband wanted cookies and cream but it was sold out so he got chocolate chip instead, which was solid and creamy with good texture. Overall the ice cream itself was good, not the best I've had but definitely not bad. I like that the flavors lean more natural and not overly sweet. I could see myself coming back if I'm in the area, but the experience would be a lot better with faster service and more consistency with what's actually available.

These were names of our favorite characters (Mr Humphreys and Mrs Slocombe) from one of our British comedies,"Are You Being Served". ) How could we not stop by.
