A day with friends in Berkeley and our first stop was Eight Grams Matcha. As in its name, this spot has various matcha drink offerings. The shop is modern, bright, clean, with a wall display of tea cups. Their menu consists of eight drinks that are in four categories, bold & intense, creamy & elevated, creamy & smooth, and bright & refreshing. They also had three seasonal drinks that incorporated lychee and pink guava. You order on tablets and you pickup your order when your number is called and texted to you. There are many tables in the shop for you to enjoy your drink. I ordered the Golden Banana Matcha. When ordering, you select your level of sweetness, ice, and milk type. Came with a friend on a weekday, we found meter parking around the corner from the shop. There were 3 devices to input your order. There was also a order guide above the devices to tell the customer a little bit about each drink. There was also another display of the different kinds of matcha blends that you could choose for your matcha drink. I decided to try the Einspanner with kuro blend since I like my matcha to have more depth. I had it 75% sweetened since that was recommended. After ordering and paying, we only waited a few minutes before our drinks were ready. I feel the matcha did have depth to it. The house cream that was on top was a little too rich for me. Now that school is out and Berkeley is a bit empty I finally got a chance to visit Eight Grams! I got the guava series matcha latte with vanilla foam and it was so good. Refreshing and handwhisked, plus matcha sprinkle on top all combined perfectly in my mouth. I got my mom the coconut water and matcha and she said it was so refreshing. The parking can be difficult but nearby streets and paid parking are available, I recommend coming early in a Sunday so that you don't have to pay for parking. We went at 10am and it wasn't too busy but an hour later the crowd started trickling in. Workers are really nice, they have kiosks but I did not see any bathrooms. My husband went to Eight Grams Matcha three times within about a month or so. We don't even live close by, so it's worth the drive for us. One feature uniquely distinct to Eight Grams is they offer four different blends of matcha -- kiso (house blend), sabai (bright blend), haku (balanced blend), and kuro (reserve blend). I ordered the Lychee Guava Refresher with the kuro (reserve blend) which was about $1.25 extra. This matcha blend is on the floral side and has a more delicate, tea forward flavor. I was so excited to try this matcha that I made a special trip to Berkeley and was super impressed by the beautiful interior and the pretty pink marketing. The menu looks very interesting and self-order system allows different types of matcha to be selected (but lacked description to differentiate). I ordered the seasonal lychee guava refresher less sweet - it was beautifully presented and quickly made - but it was incredibly unbalanced and too sweet - if it weren't so green, I wouldn't even know there was matcha in it! The matcha flavor actually comes through with the drinks here. The recommended (75%) sweet was perfect for me. The regular matcha was my favorite. The lychee had a strong lychee and matcha flavor - if you like lychee you would enjoy. The banana matcha was a little too artificial for my liking. There was a bit of astringency due to the banana strings likely being mixed into the banana "sauce" or syrup. The drinks came out quickly. I ordered the regular sugar just because I didn't know how sweet their drinks got and I would say it was pretty well balanced. When you walk in there's multiple kiosks to order from but it's a pretty popular spot so if you're here to study I think it would be a bit hard to find a spot to set up. Before purchasing, I noticed there four green tea powder blends: Kiso (good for creaminess), Sabi (brightest of the bunch), Haku (slightly higher on the umami side), and Kuro (the most aromatic). Since I'm deeply crazy for umami, I chose the Haku Blend! And when I ordered the Haku Blend Lychee Matchacano, noticed the deep dark jade dew shade towards the top. Swirl the contents, sip, and oishii!! The umami of the Haku Blend that meets the half sweetness of lychee juice, it's heaven and earth made manifest. I saw eight grams matcha on an instagram reel and decided to try them. If you do visit this place, parking can be east but sometimes it's not. But given it is downtown Berkeley it definitely wasn't easy to find parking so just keep that in mind. First impression when I walked in, it was very simple. They had like a photo area set up on the left corner where they kind of make you feel like you're in japan I guess was the goal for this. We didn't take photos cause there was a bunch of college kids who spent over 30 minutes just to get the right photo. I personally think the place is a little bit tight. As much as I would like for this to be a sit down cafe where you do homework and what, I just don't think it's feasible for that since there's so many people going in and out and everyone is moving around you since it's a tight space. You order on a kiosk, and it was pretty self explanatory. We ordered the Lavander matcha, banana matcha and matcha pudding. I wasn't a big fan of the pudding, there was something about the texture I did not like. The taste was okay as well. Their drinks is where it's really at though. My boyfriend loves banana and he fell in love with the banana matcha and ever since he decided to try banana matcha every where else we would go. I ordered the Lavender matcha and also enjoyed the drink. It was too sweet at all. I would like for it to have more lavender since matcha can be very overpowering. Eight Grams has been on my radar, as I've been curious to try the matcha in East Bay and compare to the matcha scene popping off in San Francisco. I got the strawberry guava matcha for something a lil tangy but also sweet. While I opted for less sweet, since I figured the guava would be pretty sweet already, I still found the drink a bit too sweet even after blending the fruit puree with the matcha. The matcha itself was definitely high quality though, so I'm not deterred at all from coming again. I'd just opt for a non-sweet or even less sweet drink next time. They offer three matcha blends: the Kiso house blend, Sabi bright blend, and Haku balanced blend. The Kiso house blend comes at no extra charge, while Sabi (+$0.25) and Haku (+$0.50) are available for a small upcharge. I ordered the honeycomb matcha with the Haku blend. My friends tried the banana matcha, a regular matcha latte, and the hojicha. As someone who regularly makes matcha at home, I personally found the matcha here to be quite subtle. The Haku blend in the honeycomb matcha was super mild and I could barely taste the matcha. I asked if it was possible to add extra matcha shots but they weren't able to do so. The matcha latte with the Sabi blend and oat milk just tasted like milk with no matcha. We asked if it could be remade with regular milk but that also wasn't an option.
