Long overdue review. The Book Bin is one of our local indie bookstores. Located in a strip nearby Sunset Foods among other local restaurants with plenty of parking. When you walk in, you are welcomed and greeting by the staff. Starting with best sellers, to journals, stationary and gifts. They even have a turtle in a tank named Hardcover Jay. They carry a wide variety of books, from historical, romance, young adult, cookbooks, and also have a section for staff recommendations. The ladies at the register let me know that they also take phone orders, and preorders that you can pay for ahead of time and they will let you know when your items are in for you to pick up. While the prices are higher than Amazon, and various other book retailers, supporting a local bookstore and interacting with the passionate staff gives the homey feel that all book lovers enjoy. read more

I will never understand why people go to big box bookstores when The Book Bin is right here in our neighborhood. Small and cozy, The Book Bin is the perfect local bookstore. They carry a wide variety of books, journals, stationery and gifts. The staff are kind and helpful, greeting customers warmly and offering assistance. And keeping money in our local community? Overall, this ticks all the boxes! Browsing is fun and easy - I found some books by local authors that I otherwise would have never discovered! - and the kids' section is vibrant (with an electric train running on tracks above). I love the recommendations from staff, especially because you start to recognize with whom you share reading preferences. While it's cozy and has the best sellers, their collection isn't deep with older, i.e. books published a couple years ago. Their she are only about a third filled. The staff know a lot about current American books, but I haven't been there when a staff member was on duty who knew about international or older books, which I prefer. I could be an outlier. I went there twice when their credit card payment system was not working. Their solution was to write down customer' credit card information and process the transaction later. Not a safe way to operate. Now I bring cash in case. They do offer free gift wrapping, which is a plus. They have many autho readings. read more

My sister and I stopped by to get a few books for our kids while we are traveling for our mother's funeral. The store team offered to wrap the sets individually and delivered them next door to us while we continued on with our errands we had to do. Incomparable book selection, knowledgeable staff and quaint cozy private book store ambiance

Surprised it's been nearly a year since my last review. This is my go to bookstore and I've been here many times in the last year. Throughout the pandemic they've remained open, initially taking phone or on line orders and leaving your purchases on a bench outside the store. Once things opened up they provided gloves. As mentioned previously, they are friendly and helpful. They try to accommodate your needs as best they can. Today they helped me search the store for a book their computer said they had in stock. Though we were unable to find it Allie offered to order it for me. read more

This is a terrific independent bookstore in the heart of Northbrook. A nice selection of books that has an old school bookstore vibe inside. What makes them stand out is their knowledge of books. Ask for recommendations on a topic and they'll rattle off titles. It's clear that everyone who works at the store are avid readers passionate about books. This is how bookstores used to be before large chains and Amazon took over. While I understand the convenience of those (and use them myself), you owe it to yourself to stop in and experience a real independent bookstore. I feel very lucky to have this quaint independent book store in my community. Usually late at night after finishing my latest read, I hop onto theirs website ready to order my next book or to look through their recommendations. Once I place my order online, if they have it in stock, I receive an email the next day that it's ready to be picked up. If they don't have it in stock, it's just a matter of days to get the book in my hands and joyfully read away. Hooray for Book Bin! This small, independent book store is next to my favorite post office. They have a small selection but will special order anything you want. I special ordered a book (that I also could not find at the chain stores) and it only took 3 days for it to come in. They called me promptly. The employees are lovely. They are very knowledgeable and will make recommendations if you need. The children's book section takes up about 1/5 of the store. If you need a gift for a child, this is your place! They have a frequent buyer card as well, but that isn't the point. The point is buying from people who care and love books. read more

I L-O-V-E locally owned small businesses!!! Book Bin is definitely one of those places you go for the personal touch when it comes to selecting a book as a gift or just for a personal recommendation. Think about it, you could go onto Amazon or Itunes and order a book based on the likes of millions....OR, you can stroll into Book Bin and speak to the locals about what is buzzing in the literature world. The staff is amazing, always very knowledgeable, and as stated by others, if they don't have it or don't know it, they will look it up and they will CUSTOM order it for you. I can handle the Borders Bookstores of the world disappearing, but Book Bin has a place in the hearts of the people of Northbrook!!! This is a great place for kids and adults alike. I bring my four year old and one year old here every other week. The staff is very helpful, and always turns on the locomotive train for the boys. If every store had a children's nook like this, moms may be able to shop in peace. :) For adults, they host book clubs, authors, and carry a solid selection (in a relatively small space). I started a book club 2 months ago and searched for a local independent book store to get our books from. I was very pleased with Book Bin and planned to make it our place for not only book club books but also my regular stock up spot. (I have a book problem.) Last month, however, I over-ordered for our book club. I ordered 5 and only two of us bought from the Book Bin. I was disappointed but I didn't think it would be a big deal. When I called the store back to inform them I spoke to a very rude lady that gave me quite a speech about over-ordering and made me feel like I'd bankrupt them with my three extra books. I guess I should have been more careful with ordering but I honestly did not know it was such a hardship. I will find another independent book store as I won't be returning here after being talked down to in such a rude manner. read more

This cozy little book shop is one of my favorite small retail stores in Northbrook. I was introduced to it by my former neighbor. As you might expect, their offerings are somewhat limited in comparison to those giant chain bookstores. If you are looking for a popular best seller or quality books and games for children, you will find those at the Book Bin. By contrast, they don't have very many books on computers or technology. I used to buy gift books for my neighbor for her birthday, and each time they would give me a reward card that they would punch based on how much I spent. After awhile I accumulated several of those cards, and they were nice enough to aggregate them and give me a free credit on my next purchase. Recently, my neighbor moved away (to Iowa, of all places). I know she misses the Book Bin. One day she sent me an email message and told me to go to the store and ask them to give me my gift. I thought, this is a crazy thing, they'll never believe me! But I went in, and sure enough they did remember my neighbor buying a book for me. After a bit of searching, they found a little specially wrapped package with my name on it and gave it to me. If you enjoy good books or have a friend who does, you will have a pleasant experience shopping at the Book Bin. read more

A great find of a vanishing breed - an independent book seller. I went in with 3 books in mind - they had two of them and immediately offered to order the 3rd. Left spending a lot more than I expected (but really, can you ever plan on how much you'll spend at a bookstore?) but very satisfied. These people love books and it shows. Were they a little thin in a couple of my favorite subjects (math/science/computers, newage, spec fic) sure, but they had a lot of other good selections (cooking, gardening, games, recent non-fiction) so there's nothing for me to complain about! Another Northbrook legendary spot. This store has been around since I can remember, so that means it's at least 30 years running. Located in the Sunset Foods shopping center, it is the only independent bookstore in Northbrook. Run by some older ladies who are very librarian like and quick to admonish youngsters. But the scene here is very conducive to reading and book lovers. A small bookshop like this is a vanishing breed in the suburbs or the city, and carries a wide assortment of books in a homey atmosphere. read more

I came here looking for a specific book, asking the clerk to find the title in her search engine. She could not. I found it myself on Google, asked her if they had it, and if not, could they order it. She could not. I then turned to another clerk, who barely could be bothered, and she informed me they could have it for me the next day. No apology for the ineptitude of the first clerk and with an attitude of her own. Instead of shopping there I went to Barnes & Noble and spent my money there. I won't be back.
