My Son Ben and I played this course on Fathers day. There are 3 nine hole courses we started with the Mackay and finished with the Stewart. We got paired with a Father & Son fro, New Jersey, Jim & Jimmy. It was so windy, gusting to 30 degrees. Just not fun to play in those conditions. It's a good course for Calabash. I especially liked all the choices you had on the tee box. There were some tricky blind shots and a fair amount of water that comes into play. You get the GPS enabled carts and there is one bathroom on each side. read more

Lovely afternoon at Thistle. Course is in good condition. 3- 9 holes. We were the last group out on MacKay and finished on Cameron. Saw 2 alligators. You do round at clubhouse before starting 2nd 9. Green were short and fast. It was a delightful round and we would play again. Clubhouse is old world charm. Friendly staff. read more

This is the most beautiful course that I won't visit again! Let me explain. I played Thistle yesterday (11/8) as part of a group of 24 older men from Charlotte who were on a three day outing of golf, food and fun. This was our final stop and as it turned out the club we played the day before called the pro to tell him we played very slow the day before and that he should stay on us. Interestingly, that course, which we played for the first time, in the rain, cart path only (did I mention that we range in age from 65-82) NEVER said a word to us while we were playing. And yes, it was slow going. Cart path only, in the rain on a new course is tough. So, first of all he should never have called this guy to disparage us, but secondly, and more importantly, the pro at Thistle should have handled this differently. Instead of berating our outing leader (who did a great job) he might have mentioned that he heard we had some problems on the last course and how can he help to make the experience better. From the moment we arrived the entire staff were treating us like second class patrons. Yelling at us about where to put our clubs, speed up getting on the carts and pushing us along to get us out. On the course they were watching us at every turn. On this day it was sunny, off path and we finished in about 4 hours and 20 minutes. Given our ages and the fact that many of us had never played this course and actually wanted to take some time to look around and enjoy the experience, I think we did pretty well. Snack bar staff were very nice and the food and their service was as we would expect. Pro shop staff and the outside help missed the mark. But don't worry - Thistle is off our list for this annual outing. read more

Sweet day out on the course! Lots of water and very scenic holes here. Great service, cheap sammiches - $5 gets you a cold sammich and a bag of chips! Conditions were a little mushy today because of recent rains which made the plays more difficult but I can see how great the conditions would be on a regular basis. Greens were pretty quick here! Challenging and pretty course, definitely play this if you are in the area. This is a 27 hole course. read more

It's a really spectacular course. Wow. Perfect condition. Beautiful hole after beautiful hole. Challenging but doable from Blues. Clubhouse is like country club. However- they have a weird set up that if you are the first out and finish your 9 earlier than 10, you need to wait for the 2nd 9 until 10. I get the first tee time where I go so that I can play at a normal pace and get back home to have a full day of work or hanging w fam. Waiting for an hour + between the 9 makes this a 6 hour day door to door and screws up the momentum after the 1st 9. Maybe they do it to max out on the # of groups - however despite the amazing course I can't play here again. read more

Really nice layout. Great greens that run true and fast, probably don't break as much as you read. Played the Stewart and McKay. The other nine was closed. Course was not really busy later in the day so we were able to play at a fast pace with no one in front or behind us. read more

Thistle has a very nice brand new club house. It's so nice that I wouldn't mind living in the bathroom full of granite and LCD screens....old school yet modern:) There are 3 9 hole courses here. We played Steward and McKay. While the course may eventually look more like Tidewater, it still look somewhat like Glen Dornoch when we played. The houses along the fairways are bigger than the ones in Tidewater, it's a pretty decent sight as well. Overall, I still like Glen Dornoch more for this particular trip. However, Thistle had the best and most consistent greens of them all. We hit the bar in the club house afterward. We got a few pints of Belgian white. We were surprised by the bill when I closed the tab. 3 bucks a pint! read more

The finest golf experience I've had on the NC/SC coast. This facility and its course bled class. Magnificent condition and challenging layout with beautiful views. Pace of play was surprisingly good. Don't see it as a "resort" course which is a good thing and appeared to attract folks who understand the game and it's ethics. Every 10 min starting times helps too. Outstanding clubhouse and pub. Although it's a nice course our experience with the staff members was horrible to say the least. Not only that they start their 27 holes so that fast play is not only frowned upon, it's impossible. My fiancé and I booked the first tee time at 7:30 a.m., and we finished in 90 minutes. Another twosome who teed off at the same time on another nine finished at the same time. Both Of our twosome groups were forced to wait over 40 minutes while the starter push two threesomes in front of us and two groups ahead of the other twosome on a different nine. The other twosome wasn't happy either. We typically book the first tee time because we play quickly and don't want to be held up by playing behind threesomes or foursomes. With the USGA making a concerted effort to step up the speed of play, The Thistle is doing everything they can to make it as slow as possible. Not only that, they don't seem to care if their guests are happy or not. My playing partner and I play golf in the Brunswick County area every weekend, but we won't be going back to The Thistle. read more

BEWARE ---"THISTLE RAIN CHECK POLICY". My group was scheduled to play March 11, 2017, but due to Snow, Sleet, and Wind they closed the course. We were issued 31 Rain Checks for this event. This year we were scheduled on Monday, March 12th, with 25 Rain Checks (6 could not make it this year), and the forecast for the day was a 100% chance of Rain. When I arrived at the course asked Bill working the counter what was their Rain Check Policy. I was told 5 holes or less you'll get 18 holes. If it was 6 to 12 holes you would get 9 holes. Anything over 12 holes would be nothing, which many would consider fair. The lead groups only got to the 4th hole, and we all returned to the Club House, due to 25+ mile an hour winds and heavy rain. When I asked for 25 new Rain Checks, we were informed they wouldn't issue a new Rain Check on a Rain Check. I was told we had a year to use them, which would have been fine if we lived in the area. However, this was an annual golf trip where everyone lives at least 11 hours away. After discussing to several Pro's and General Managers at our other courses for the trip, they felt this policy was unfair in this instance. They at minimum issued the old rain check, which would expire by the end of the week. They stated we could come back between 4:00 and 5:00 PM for the remainder of the week and they would ATTEMPT to get us out on the course. I informed them that would be extremely difficult and/or impossible for the entire group, because: 1. Having all afternoon Tee Times of 12:30 to 1:15 at other courses, plus travel time. 2. Mostly Seniors between 62 to 75 years old. 3. Night encroaching around 7:00PM, and with their estimate time getting out, only gives 2-3 hours to play 18 holes. Six guys managed to rush around and barely get 9 holes in before night fell. At $82.00 X 25 =$2050.00 not a bad RIP OFF on mostly SENIORS. BOTTOM LINE IS WE DIDN'T GET WHAT WE PAID FOR. When we first drove in to the course, I used the wrong lane. The gentleman at the gate politely said to me "The next time you come back, and you will want to come back, please use the other lane." He was not wrong about wanting to come back! This place is beautiful. The staff is very friendly and more than willing to help. The pro shop has a great selection. It is a challenging but fun course. The greens were faster than I'm used to, but once you figure it out they are great. There is lots of sand and water which can frustrate you if you are a slicer or hooker. Yes! We most definitely will play this course again. Worth the cost!!! read more

The Pub restaurant at the Thistle Golf, Sunset Beach, NC, - had lunch there a few months ago & the meal was impressive. Went back for their breakast with high hopes. Only one other table was seated. Waitress took our order & us brought our coffee. Never came back to check for refills. Had to wave her down 3x for more coffee. Still only us & one more table in dining room. 30 minutes later our breakfast was served. Waiting for hens to lay eggs??? Omg! The home fries were from canned potatoes. I asked the waitress if they had a new chef, yes, the chef, Sal, responsible for the delicious lunch had left to be replaced by a cook who took 30 minutes to scramble eggs & open a can of boiled potatoes to make homefries. Now I knew why there was only one other table in the Pub. 0 Stars! Have to give 1 star to post, but it's really 0. read more

Had friends in from out of town. I have been raving about how nice The Thistle is. When we were talking about where to play, there was no doubt where the guys wanted to play. I must admit I was a little nervous that I had over hyped the course and we just got crushed with a hurricane. With the exception of a few downed trees you would never know the course just went thru the storm. There were no cart restrictions or anything. The course was immaculate and manicured to a T as usual. They were absolutely blown away. And this group of guys have played some nice courses. Great course! Nice greens. What I don't understand is why they don't load your clubs on a cart until it's time to tee. Bag guy acted like this is normal operations. It Is Not!! People like to putt and get organized in the cart before being rushed off to the tee.Other than that, it was great! read more
