I live nearby Thom's Market and walk there. Thom's is EVERYTHING a convenience store should be: clean, convenient, eclectic in wide-ranging inventory, upscale indulgences and downscale necessities with an ambiance that is sweet to enter, a staff that's comfortable answering questions and amiable to your lingering... you'll find a pleasantly navigable experience even knowing you paid a slight premium for your convenience; upon leaving you'll want to return, again and again. AND I found out that Bill, the owner, is carrying on a family tradition, where even the type font of Thom's conveys his integrity to your experience of quality products and good customer service. read more

If you just need to run in and grab a six pack of Lonestar tall boys you might want to try the convenience store down the street. But if you are looking for lavender lemonade, some pirate's booty, or some bottles of Steamworks Third Eye Pale Ale, then this is the spot. It's much more than a convenience store and you are actually happy to browse the aisle rather than hurriedly scanning crammed rows for beef jerky, Gatorade, and cashews. The store offers a wonderful selection of frozen food, fresh food, pastas, rice, chips, snacks, beer and wine. You can even probably take home one of the pinatas dangling from the ceiling if you ask. I joined Yelp just to say what a disappointment Thom's is considering the location to the Zilker neighborhood and the quality it strives for. Thom's Market prices are obscene, a good dollar or two higher in many cases than places selling comparable food. Their highest crimes comes when they sell grossly overpriced food that they neglect to ensure is fresh and still shelf worthy. I've been burned by them too many times and will never go back. Oddly the wine prices are more on par with other places with a similar stock. I know they have to pay premiums for the food they stock and to be fair, much of it is great, but they've blown a great opportunity to bring in many more customers by attempting to get such high returns for each item. I also find the proprietor kind of aloof and a little unfriendly (seems to have the Californian in Austin vibe), but perhaps I just looked continually stunned at the tallying of the goods going in my bag each time I visit. Thom, reach out to your neighbors (many of us up the hill from you feel this way) and build a great community grocery store at reasonable prices or continue bilking us for what you can and we'll just take the not so long trip to the other more fairly run games in town. read more

Couldn't ask for more from a neighborhood market! Great, thoughtful selections of natural and import food and beverages. Fantastic beer and wine selection. And most any convenience store staple I could want. The inventory strikes an ideal balance between epicurean novelty and convenience market practicality. What really makes the store great, however, is the people. Owner Bill and his wife are friendly and personable, and have assembled a staff that's also friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. When he's around, Bill is always happy to explain the generations-old history and inspiration behind the store. Thom's is the type of place you feel good about patronizing. The staff always make you feel welcome, and you feel you're in a place that's uniquely Austin. Yes, you may pay a tiny bit more, but not more than you might expect at any similar independent shop in a prime location with all the convenience-store advantages. Problems cited by a few giving low ratings don't seem to jibe with my experience. I've never noticed any confusion on pricing, and never been charged differently for the same item, as one reviewer suggests. The clerks are ALL first-rate and I've never been ignored on any of my almost daily visits. The service is friendly and casual - Austin style. Thom's is a model of independent business that helps Austin maintain it's unique character. If you want to "just say no" to the cookie-cutter chain stores, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better alternative. read more

Yes! An Austin-born establishment worth going back to again and again! I'm a little surprised at Jason D's review! My experiences at Thom's Market have been completely the opposite! During the first few months, there were empty shelves and a request list. Out of my four requests, three are now on the shelves, including Sriracha sauce and Alfredo sauce! Need an easy and quick dinner idea? Talk to Beth for a fresh and easy idea! She's guided me on my way to Organic Turkey Bleu Cheese Mini Burgers on tasty baked Cibatta rolls and a LOVELY Chipotle Pesto Pasta with Garlic toast. The beer and wine selection grow larger and better with every visit. Bill and Beth (and their lovely dog Moses) have been fantastic about filling requests and coming up with great dinner and snack ideas. FIVE STARS! TO SUM IT UP: 1. Cook an entire delicious meal with ingredients from the store (and with Beth's guidance if you need it!) 2. Great selection of food and beverages at awesome prices 3. Personal service and friendly attitudes (Moses is blind, but he sure will hear your "hello" and wag his tail.) 4. Thom's market has recently become my new corner store and I couldn't be happier with my experiences here. In my experience, everyone is super friendly and helpful. I usually stop by after work around 6 or later in the evening, so I can't speak to the friendliness of the daytime staff, but everyone who is there in the evening makes it a great shopping experience. Also, the store is always very clean and well organized. There was one instance in which I was dissatisfied with a product I had purchased a few days before and they graciously accepted the return with no hassle at all. They're happy to help you look around for whatever you need, and in the one rare instance they didn't have what I was looking for, they suggested the closest retailer they thought might have it. They stock lots of great products that you'd normally have to go to Whole Foods or another specialty store to find. The prices are sometimes a dollar or so higher than you would find at Whole Foods, but the convenience and overall better shopping experience is definitely worth a buck in my opinion. Also, when you shop here you're supporting a local Austin business that in turn supports other local Austin business by stocking their products. And yes, I realize Whole Foods started in Austin, but it's not really the same thing when we're talking about a small, local grocer vs. a corporation with stores spread across multiple continents. They also give great recommendations. I can be a bit of a wine snob at times and generally stick to what I know unless I'm at a restaurant, but I ventured out here once on a recommendation from the cute girl who works at the counter (Megan, I think? I'm terrible with names) and ended up with a surprisingly delicious sauvignon blanc that was very reasonably priced. The condition of the store, great staff and high quality products make this place absolutely wonderful!! read more

I live fairly close to Thom's Market, and 9 times out of 10 I choose to go here rather than to the closer gas station mini mart. The reason is simple: Thom's, to me, exemplifies what a local business should be. The people there are friendly, helpful, and super welcoming. Thom's, moreso than any other store I've seen, seems to do a great job of supporting and creating cross-ties with other local businesses, such as Tacodeli and SOAP. (Get there early to get those breakfast tacos, by the way!) All and all, Thom's is a clean, convenient place to stop along Barton Springs Road when you're looking for a snack or some staples. read more

I love Thom's! I meet my trainer for grueling workouts three times a week around Zilker park (if you see a red faced, sweating, still rather plump 40 year old brunette grimacing as she runs around Zilker park in between thousands and thousands and thousands of burpees, sit ups and squats- that's most likely me. Just keep driving, no need to call the paramedics). Thom's is my favorite place to stop for a post workout tofu and ginger curry sandwich and enormous bottle of Smart Water. I will likely still be panting when I enter Thom's, but no one has ever made fun of me yet. They have a great selection of local sandwiches and treats and organic canned and frozen goods. I have been shopping at Tom's Market since the doors first opened. I have also shopped there almost daily as I used to live in Pecan Grove RV Park. Thom's Market is one of the best things to happen to Austin. It provides not only a superb, eclectic shopping experience, visiting Tom's can also end up being a fun community experience. This is my new go to stop and shop! I randomly stopped here to grab a bottle of water on my way to work. 30 minutes later I realized I was going to be late to work. I was walking up and down the isles looking at all the cool stuff Thom's Market had to offer. They have everything take and bake pizza or cook your pizza there, coffee, chips, candy, fresh fruit and veggie selection, huge beer and wine selection. They have so many little grab and go items from lux laundry soap to candles to catchy coffee mugs even a super cute Thom's Market trucker hat. It's a great place to grab a hostess gift on the way to a party or stop in for breakfast taco & coffee. The staff is super friendly and can help you pick out a good beer or bottle of wine. I appreciate that they have local options from local companies alongside plenty of breakfast items for when I want to make brunch on the weekends but don't want to get in my car and drive to H-E-B. Do you remember a time when going to the grocery store didn't require a GPS to find your car and a power assisted cart to get around. (Ok, I'm lazy! Sue me!). ... It was a simpler time before Nintari 64 bit game boxes when we used to have old fashioned fun with a blown out tire... We used to go down to the sip and serve to get a fresh jerked soda pop with our sweetums and stare into each others eyes not talking because there was really nothing else to say. Well, we're now in the 21st century and life just moves faster. Don't tell the good people at Thom's though, because they still treat you with the old timey service complete with putting your purchases in brown paper bags and thanking you for coming in. They have an eclectic collection of goods both locally sourced or from elsewhere in the nation. For example: Thom's was the only place in town (in Texas?) you could get McClures Pickles (New York / Detroit exports) until other stores caught on. Now you can get them at Central Market. Another example is that they fly in cookies fresh. FLY IN COOKIES. Go check out the store. There'll definitely be something that piques your interest, guaranteed. read more

They have everything you could possibly need. Things I pop in for are usually Taco Deli breakfast tacos with spicy green doña sauce on the side, black and white cookies, farm-stand vegetables, fresh eggs, kombucha, Stumptown coffee, Harmless Harvest raw pink coconut water (IMO the best!), Deschutes craft beer and whatever else catches my fancy. Even though my purchases are usually food related, they do carry a variety of items including for people heading in the direction of Barton Springs or someone looking for a little last minute fun gift. I love coming to Thom's Market. There's something old-world about it, but with a hipster vibe and content. You can get profane socks or lunch, a cup of joe or some wine, fresh fruit or ice cream. The grocery store itself always has a variety of fresh fruits, dairy, veggies, snacks, etc to choose from. We also love their wine/beer selection! A fine place for unwelcoming customer service and subtle hints of passive aggressive judging. Nothing makes me feel more warm than a store clerk following me around, peeking behind corners to see what I'm doing. When I went to the front of the store to purchase my item, I politely asked, "How's your night going?" The clerk looked at me blankly and then stated the total cost of my items, completely disregarding my attempt at small talk. I'll stick with Royal Blue, or basically anywhere else that has non-condescending staff. Definitely lost a regular customer. read more

Thom's to the rescue when I'd rather drive salty reeds under my fingernails than fight the ACL cluster to get back to the store. They sell whole beans only but have a giant coffee grinder in the store...AWESOME! I bought the Thom's brand (the cheapest of the incredibly expensive choices) and no regrets! Their brand really as good (if not better than) than the salesperson said it was! We recently spent a weekend in Austin. On the advice of a local, we went to Thom's to check out the local beer selection. Being from New Orleans, we take our alcohol seriously. The lovely young man working there steered us towards some promising local brews. But...we had a problem: we wanted to buy a lot, but didn't want to leave cold beer in our motel room for several days. Guess what? This wonderful guy let us pay for our items, then he put them aside for us to pick up, on our way out if town! So we rolled up several days later, and had a ton of ice cold beer ready to take home.
