Best little market in town. I live down the road and it's become my go-to spot for morning coffee and TacoDeli breakfast tacos. They have a great a selection of beer and wine, funky snacks and gifts, and I love that they source local sandwiches (Fricanos) and pastries (Misty Morning Bakery - best zuchini bread I've ever had!). We recently spent a weekend in Austin. On the advice of a local, we went to Thom's to check out the local beer selection. Being from New Orleans, we take our alcohol seriously. The lovely young man working there steered us towards some promising local brews. But...we had a problem: we wanted to buy a lot, but didn't want to leave cold beer in our motel room for several days. Guess what? This wonderful guy let us pay for our items, then he put them aside for us to pick up, on our way out if town! So we rolled up several days later, and had a ton of ice cold beer ready to take home. Thom's Market is fantastic. Bill and Beth Thom own and operate this great little neighborhood grocery. They are incredibly helpful and friendly and they are working really hard to make their customers happy. I love the suggestion book they keep at the front. When they first opened they didn't stock my wife's favorite beer, so I suggested it. A few weeks later it appeared on the shelf. Thom's is everything that Whole Foods at 6th and Lamar isn't: easy to navigate, staffed by nice people, convenient and truly Austin weird in the best possible way. -------------------------------- UPDATE: A pint of conventional (non-organic) half and half at Thom's is priced at $2.95. Or, you can go to Whole Foods and pay $3.50. Looks like the national chain can't compete with the little guy. Perhaps the ac bill for the WF's moronic "beer alley" is bleeding over into their prices. read more

I love this place! The chicks that work there are funny and cool and will help you pick a good wine. BTW- they have an awesome selection. I found a lovely white (which I normally don't drink) that has a clean crisp flavor with a hint of jalapeno! Yes I said jalapeno!! They also keep Beanitos Black Bean chips in stock. I am totally addicted to these chips as they are so yummy and corn-free. Also they are a local product so you know they are fresh! You can also get some exotic scented candles or gifts which is surprising for such a tiny store. I love this place and go often. read more

One time I went in right after attending someone's going away party that I ended up breaking up with. The woman at Thom's held me while I cried and was very understanding and way cool. Great variety of allergy-friendly and health conscious items, my pup is always welcomed with ear scratches and a treat and the staff is friendly and helpful. So I was reading a few reviews here and can't help but to wonder where some people think they are when they walk into this market. This is NOT your 7-11! They stock a great deal of things from local producers and an assortment of products from here in Texas as well as responsible and good products and producers from around the country. Frankly I think if you're purchasing beer here that you could get a discount price at HEB on -- you're missing the point -- spring for the good stuff and get your dollars' worth! I haven't had any problems finding the price on products here -- granted though -- some of these people who work there are far too nice! They talk with you and offer you samples and make suggestions when you're perplexed about a beer, wine, cheese, cracker -- whatever. That drives me nuts because I'm so used to the impersonal -- ring 'em and sling 'em -- treatment I get at the big box places and super sized "convenience" chain stores! (read -- irony) Anyway I live nearby and it is convenient. I find the quality of the products to be high and the price is reasonable -- the service is friendly and professional and they are all rather tolerant of the less informed of us who have been known to wander in on our way to a party and say --"What kind a wine do I like?" Great selection of high quality local food stuffs at decent prices. They have an amazing range of products with a lot of different brands and sources that I'm not familiar with (which is a good thing) :). Great beer and wine selection, and they're right on your way home from Barton and Zilker for a quick stop. I suggest you stop by at least once to at least check it out, and maybe get some crazy good ice cream during the hot months. read more

I absolutely love this place. I was hesitant at first thinking it was going to be a shi-shi snooty shop full of stuff I don't need and can't afford. Oh contrare! They always have what I need ... that one thing I'm missing for dinner, an afterschool snack for my kids, a GREAT bottle of wine, or a last minute bday gift. Two of the employees rock my world.. Megan and Mark. Mark will hook you up with the perfect wine in seconds flat. Megan is like customer service on crack. She knows your name, knows your kids names, remembers your last conversation, runs across the store to grab something for you... and on and on. I swear she once waived at me as I was DRIVING BY on Barton Springs. Good folks, good service, good selection, good location. Couldn't be better.... It IS pricey and it IS a specific selection...but when your only other option for something that resembles a convenience store/mini market is the disgusting Valero across the street, the extra cost is worth it. Only in Austin! Is this a convenience store or is it a grocery store? It is bigger than a convenience store, but smaller than your typical grocery store. Think of it as a fancy bodega, with an emphasis on the "fancy." The first aisle if you walk straight into the store when I was there offered high-percentage cacao dark chocolate. There were candles with unique scents on display. My partner and I were looking for beer and snacks before heading to someone's house. The "chips" aisle is all gourmet flavors and popcorn. Awesome clean, organized local business. A little pricey, accepts credit cards. Small private parking lot, but not too busy and you're probably not doing all your grocery shopping here. read more

I am hooked on the Black and White cookies this store sells. They are THE BEST! They bring them in from New York so they are completely different than what this home grown Texan is used to. This is my neighborhood store! Very, very friendly and helpful staff who remember your name each time. Beer selection is fantastic! Some beers are a little pricey here, but you're paying for selection and convenience. The store also has a very extensive collection of random finds, which has come in handy more than a few times after forgetting a key ingredient at the grocery store. Like someone else below, I've had rude interractions from the people behind the counter (I don't know if it's the owners or their employees) most every time I've been in Thoms. I live in the Zilker area and stop occasionally to pick up something for convenience and I don't recall ever being greeted or treated politely. There have been times the person behind the counter was on their cell phone with what was clearly a personal call and stay on the call the entire time I'm inside and while checking me out without ever acknowledging me (other than to get paid). The last time I was there, the lady (maybe the one someone below described as "spacey", or maybe another spacey employee) was eating a sandwich behind the counter and talking with their mouth open while I was checking out. I don't know her name but she's the one who's been on her cell phone other times I've been there. When I asked an older lady behind the counter for a sack to hold my things once, she actually laughed at me and said they're only for people spending more than $25 (I think I spent around $10 if that matters). I assumed she was making a joke, but she wasn't. I had several other things in my car that I was going to have to carry into my house later and a sack for the few things I bought at Thoms would've been nice, but these people aren't interested in doing what's nice. Of course their prices are terrible and their products aren't exactly local or high quality (sometime's they're smaller brand items that could be considered boutique, but even most of those are in HEB too which seems to be lost on a lot of other reviewers). Regardless, their prices and selection are fine when I need convenience, but their service is so pitiful and employees are so rude that it's only a place of last resort. read more

I give this place one star because I think you have to rate them with something so I guess that's the only option..I'm a college student and in the middle of moving to another area of Austin and I'm at the very last tiny part of the semester.I'm still waiting on my loans for this summer so at this point I'm actually very grateful for the food stamp card that has kept me alive.Me and a friend went there (because it IS the only thing even half way grocery in the area) just to grab a handful of items for a pizza we were making.Mozzarella cheese,mushrooms, and an onion.Simple enough right?..So apparently there was a misunderstanding about how broke I was as I intended to use my Food Stamp card which is at this point accepted by most gas stations,WalGreen's,CVS, and tons of other random places.Although skeptical we entered anyway on the faint hope that we wouldn't have to drive all the way back to get real money.When I walked in I was immediately struck by the strange combination of odors that always defines a "hip" organic selling store. I'm not sure what private joke the idiotic employees were engaged in but they had all their arms together like a cheerleading squad and raised them all together with a triumphant shout of "GOOOO TEEEAM!!"...I immediately felt nauseous...In the midst of all their moronic glee they seemed to have not noticed that we had been standing there for almost two minutes before one chick, still giggling, turned to me and asked if she could help me with anything..I asked very plainly if they accepted SNAP benefits as I feel it doesn't sound quite as embarrassing as Food Stamps(don't ask me why).She looked at me like I had just asked her the barometric pressure on the surface of Venus(apparently it's 92 times that of Earth)..but suffice to say she looked confused, as if this question had never been uttered within these dingy walls..Poor people?..huh?....What are those?...She asked her "boss" I guess who was still busy giggling and grabassing with the troop if they supported the Food Stamp program.."No...no.." she replied still laughing...It's frustrating enough to have to buy food with government assistance but at this point it was pretty embarrassing to even still be standing there..My friend emphasized this by saying loudly "Better go get my wallet!" so that everyone knew that she wasn't the one needing the help..So we drive all the way back to her place, and drive all the way back to Thom's because it's still the closest place in the area if we didn't want to fight traffic.So I'm looking at the prices at this point...Their actual "cheese" section was practically nonexistant..A few small assorted slabs of extremely expensive exotic cheese..We kept searching for Mozzarella...Nowhere to be found..They were out of stock of the simplest varieties of cheese and even the ones we did find were crazy high.I glanced around at some other things..Produce..We still needed an onion..All the prices on the produce were outrageous but the one that caught my eye was 2.95 a piece for small avocados...89 cents at most at HEBs...We found a package of mushrooms for 4.95..(1.89 at HEB)......I wandered over to the beverage section just out of curiosity and saw that they had a well stocked cooler full of different beer selections...Now without even really looking i could tell that a lot of those beers would sell for not all that much in single form but yet couldn't help but notice that the sign on the door said 10.95 for a mixed six pack...So that's automatically charging a flat rate because you picked them out yourself or what?...Seemed ridiculous to me..So back over to the continuing search for affordable cheese....Every option was out of our monetary reach so in desperation my friend asked me how much the crappy fake STRING cheese package I picked up was....5.95....for fake terrible cheese at a hip organic store...we threw down our overpriced items and walked out...The main thing that irritates me about places like this and all the morons who've given it 5 stars is that it caters to the idea that because a place is "hip" and "local" they can somehow get a pass on having a tiny selection and ridiculous prices..It caters to snobs who actually get a lot of satisfaction from just spending money period..The biggest real American addiction and the one that's really screwed us over in the end...spending.Paying more for something because it makes you feel better about yourself because you're in a comfortable enough position to where it doesn't really effect anything if you pay triple the price for extremely common items....This is not a new trend nor is it limited to this one particularly insufferable store (see Sprouts,Central Market,Whole Foods), but it just seemed like this place was taking it to a whole other level.Screw Thom's...Give me Tom Thumb's..... read more

Absolutely love this place! My husband, dog, and I stop here almost every day. They have a great selection of drinks, wine, beer, cheese, snacks, dinner prep, etc. It's almost like combing whole foods with a convenience/corner store. If you need anything and don't feel like traveling all the way to the grocery store definitely go here. They also have some prepared lunch food if you need something good on the run. Cute market with a variety if products including local goods. As a transplant from NY, I was especially excited to find fresh Black & White cookies that were moist and delicious! From their Barton Springs location, to the beautiful wood check-out counter, to their quirky selection of items such as Wine Wipes (for every red wine lover, instantly takes off that purple stain), Thom's Market is an awesome alternative to your typical convenience store. It could be compared to a small, very small Whole Foods. Thom's has a pretty good selection of frozen foods, organic pasta, Kombucha, and don't let me forget the wine and beer selections. For every Austin lover, you'll find your Austin staples such as Taco Deli tacos. The staff is wonderful; it is nice to check-out at a small store and have some interaction with the person behind the counter which is more than just, "credit or debit." Thom's is where I head to pick up my monthly Voluspa candle (otherwise I'd have to brave Anthropologie to buy it), and for fun items such as firework snappers. Two things keep it from a 5-Star for me, the prices, which I understand organic is just pricier, and the selection of ready-made items such as sandwiches. Completely recommend! After shopping at Thom's, you'll no-doubt leave that warm satisfaction you often get from shopping at a farmer's market, or Whole Foods. read more

We don't have a good market in the hood unless you go to Whole Foods or 7/11. I have tried too many times to want to make Thoms work and it just doesn't. I don't know who works or runs it, but its just not friendly. I know I have gone in looking like a mom of a 4 year old, but that shouldn't mean anything. 7/11 doesnt' care what I look like so I guess I will go there or just drive over the bridge to Whole Foods. read more

I have to say. This is one of the nicest markets I've seen so far in Austin. Such a nice collection of local products. I love the organic and natural selection too. Staff was super friendly and they seamed to know what they were selling. Loved the coffee and love the beer selection. Only thing is the store is very jumbled.
