Great place for on the beach camping. Dry camping but you can fill up with water when you pull in. Beach is beautiful. Cell service was not fabulous for working remotely but I made due.

What did I do to deserve staying in pure bliss and paradise aka camp on the beach?!?! Thornhill Broome is one of the few areas you can legally reserve and camp directly on the beach. I had my eye on this for quite a while and thought I'd have to wait until next summer/fall since all of the Friday and Saturday nights were booked well in advance. However, when I realized I had a random Monday off, I jumped on the opportunity to reserve a beach side camping spot finally! SOOO worth it!!! Coming in HIGH off a Buffalo Bills shutting out the New England Patriots win, I drove up to Thornhill Broome and arrived shortly after the check in window opened (2:00pm) and starting setting up campsite #60. The young man at the check-in/ranger station was very friendly and helpful in regards to the campsite and parking regulations. One car is included in the reservation price, additionally cars (three total) are $12 each, if we are just having visitors then there is free parking until 10pm. Very helpful since I had one of each :) It was comical setting up my tent by myself due to the wind but eventually I got it up and staked down - with rocks. The tent stakes did not do much since I was trying to stick them in sand, hah. I put up my tiki torches and prepped my campfire. YES - you can have a campfire here! It seems pretty rare to be allowed to have a campfire in Southern California these days but alas when you're next to the ocean, all is well! When camp was all set up I sat down near the ocean in my camping chair and just relaxed while reading my magazine. It was AMAZING! My friends came up around 5pm and we took a walk along the beach and watched the sunset about 6/6:30pm. My cousins joined us around 7pm and we cooked pie iron pizzas, roasted s'mores, and had a great time near the camp fire enjoying the great outdoors, the magnificent stars, and each other's company. A great night indeed. The waves throughout the night were so relaxing. In the morning we woke up and watched the sunrise come over the mountains before taking down camp and making our way over to Point Mugu to spend the day hiking. This is a fantastic experience and I still can't believe there is the ocean in front of the campsite and beautiful breathtaking mountains on the backside. Oh and while we were gazing into the ocean we saw two seals!!! Such a great experience, we were able to have a campfire, set up our tent (or RV if we had one), and just experience the joys of beach camping. I'm glad to say I was able to check this item off my Bucket List and I look forward to coming back again and again!!!

It is truly a real let down after traveling such a l-o-n-g distance from Nor Cal to So Cal and all the other State Park Campgrounds like McGrath, Sycamore, Leo Carrillo, Malibu close at 10 PM SHARP! So, what do you do? Ya wing it and camp overnight at this campground using stinky, outhouse type pit toilets! There are no showers, so you must bring your solar shower with you, okay? Please make sure you guy line your tent down otherwise, your tent will be blown into the Pacific Ocean.

This campground is unbelievable! Right on the sand on a stretch of beautiful beach up between Malibu and Ventura. Each spot is equipped with a pit for fires and a table, and they're spaced pretty far apart so you have a sense of privacy even if you have neighbors. The port-a-potties were surprisingly clean and hassle-free, which you don't find at every primitive campsite. It felt like being somewhere so far away even though it was just an hour and a half drive from home. Also, one of the cheapest campsites available -- for arguably some of the best views! It does get kind of windy sometimes, but as long as you're aware and prepared, you should be fine (we just had to hold up our tent during a difficult hour-long wind storm, but besides that, we were fine).

I love that there is a camping option on the beach here in LA. Even better that it's dog friendly. The only bummer is that the PCH is right there so you constantly hear and see the cars whizzing by. Each camp site comes with a fire pit and bench table. We were able to fit 3 cars at one campsite. A lot of people had trailers. The bathrooms are port-a-potties and decently maintained. Our site didn't have a trash can which I found to be strange. Overall this is a nice beach camping option if you don't feel like traveling that far from La. But there's probably better option if you go further north up the coast.

Great place to stay laid back but watch out for state patrol they like to mess with hippies. Definitely will go back but don't forget to bring all the provisions you will need if you plan on staying overnight.

This is a secret gem in LA! This was our second year tent camping and it's been a great time both years! This camp site is literally right in front of the ocean. It really doesn't get closer than that. Because of the prime location, make sure you reserve a camp spot well in advanced, especially if you want to camp on a weekend in the summer. We reserved our camp site one year in advanced to get a full weekend in June. A couple of things to be aware of: -no showers, but there is an open public overhead faucet for rinsing off near the check in booth -there are small faucets along the camp sites for cleaning dishes and rinsing off your feet -there are only chemical toilets -there are a LOT of rocks on the beach so be careful. Our friend fractured her toe because of the rocks -a beautiful hike we did that's only about 2 miles down the street is called Mugu Peak (definitely recommend it for a great workout and great views but it is extremely steep) Overall, amazing time and beautiful views! Happy Camping!

Excellent beach side location depending where you're coming from. Minutes from Ventura county line on PCH in the county of Los Angeles. State beach offering outdoor camping on asphalt with sand just yards away. This property is a extension of Point Mugu State park. It's very primitive with limited services and 8 guest per site. A few designated spaces allow for regular vehicles to pop up tents but for the majority, it's for travel trailers and RV's. Amenities - Very little overflow parking if you bring a second vehicle. Spaces have picnic tables and fire pits. Be warned, it's gets very windy. Cold showers courtesy of the State of California and blue toilets. It's the basics and I don't recall seeing waste tanks to drain your holding tanks when ready to depart. Bring your sled equipment and climb this massive huge sand dune across PCH, it draws a lot of people both traveling and beach enthusiasts. I like traveling the extra distance to have a section of beach all to ourselves. It really is remote with few in between. FYI - There is safe parking along guardrail with parallel parking since state park doesn't allow public vehicles. Pura vida :)^

    Chainlink fence = Highway

We have camped on the beach many many times over the years. This was our first trip to point mugu 11/09/21, we stopped for two nights on our long road trip through several states. This is by far the worst beach camping in California. It's basically on the Highway, yet they charge $35 a night with no amenities except a Porto potty. A chainlink fence separates the Highway from the campground. Not only that, people drive up and parked along the chainlink fence and camped for free. I wish we had done that instead. We have now seen every inch of California coast that is accessible, including out 4x4 trails. This place should be charging 10-15 a night at most. Yes you're very close to the water but there are many campgrounds in California like that. The only reason this place got two instead of one star is because the dolphins going by in the morning. I wish we only had one night stay instead of two. The Highway wakes you up all night and when you do finally fall asleep someone(maybe a park ranger) starts driving through the campground with a vehicle that sounds like a bucket being dragged through the campground at 5am. Then back at 530. The lights from the road with light your camp up like a spot light repeatedly all night and all morning. Unless you have a trailer I suggest going elsewhere and even then there are so many better spots in California. I would rather be farther from the water than camp here. The other negative review was right also, bathrooms are gross and used by everyone and their momma.

Not only did I turn 30 this year but I also camped on the beach for the very first time :) Woot! Woot!

An old roommate of mine used to say that he loved Los Angeles because of the obtainable diversity. He would say that within a couple of hours he could be in the desert, the forest, in front of the ocean, or on top of a mountain. If he knew about this campground then, there is no doubt camping on the beach would have made its way into his argument. Just about 30 miles north of Santa Monica you can find this little pocket of earth, that if given the chance, will transport your entire being into a different reality. It's kind of difficult to dwell on all of life's problems when the door to your humble little tent faces the majesty of picturesque clouds and commanding waves. There's something calming about knowing that wherever you are, however you might feel, those waves are always there, rising and crashing onto the rocks. Whether you're looking for the next spiritual experience or simply need a spot for a night of debauchery, here are some bullet points that will help you on your way.. HELL TO THE YEAH: - You get to camp right on the sand! - There is a fire ring and table in each spot. - You're close to Neptune's Net which is a must for lunch/dinner. LOGISTICS: - $35 for a camp spot - CASH. NOTE: They're known to hike it up to $45 as demand in the summer rises. - This is for 1 vehicle. Each additional vehicle is $10 extra per night. Maximum of 3 vehicles per camp spot. - If you come at a time after an attendant is present, simply grab one of the envelopes near the entrance, drive in to find your perfect spot, fill out the envelope by jotting down your licence plate and camp spot number, then return it to the drop box from where you initially obtained the envelope. - Check in time is at 2pm and check out time is at 12pm. - The entrance is closed between 10pm - 9am. RESERVATIONS: - If you're planning on coming during the weekend then I highly, HIGHLY recommend you make a reservation as most of the summer weekends fill up quickly! You can do so here: http://www.reserveamerica.com or by phone: 1-800-444-7275 (NOTE: There is an $8 service fee per reservation). - You need to make your reservations at least 3 days in advance. If not, then you just have to show up at the campground early the day you are planning on staying because it defaults to first come, first served. - If you're coming during the week, a reservation might not be necessary as I've come here twice in the spring during the weekday and there have been more than enough available spots. It just depends on how much you want to chance it, I guess. - If you get here and they are at capacity, don't freak out because Leo Cabrillo is just 7 miles south so you can check them out too. And if you just need a spot to crash and have given up the dream of sleeping on the sand, then check out Sycamore Campground which is a mile or two south and right across the street from Thornhill. However, this is in no way beach camping but they do have flush toilets. THINGS TO BE AWARE OF: - I cannot stress this enough but GUYLINE your tent! If not, this will happen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsNlBmdnIp0 - Only porta potties on site (bring a headlamp as the area is not properly lit). - The camp spots are pretty close together but the past two times I've been there, most people seem to be in RVs which has made for very few neighboring tents on the sand. - There are tons of rocks between you and the water so you'll have to do a bit of climbing to get to the sea. - It is definitely not necessary but if you happen to have a small rake, it might be helpful in clearing out a spot for your tent. - It gets windy and chilly so make sure to bring a small blanket for the campfire.. and don't forget your beer ;)

The BEST for fall/winter camping (if you aren't a pussy and can handle the high chance of rain and wind). I haven't camped here in the summer/spring yet, but I'm assuming it's crowded and a completely different experience than what we had. We camped here in September and we were the only ones in the campground for the entire weekend, it was awesome. You basically just pay online and then print your form and drive in (as with all State Parks), and when we drove in there wasn't even anyone in the ranger booth. We really didn't see a single person until we left on Sunday. The campground isn't remote...you're right across from PCH (noise level minimum), but it was still cool having the place to ourselves...we def got wild. You park in your spot basically right up against the sand and then each camp spot basically goes from your car all the way to the water, pretty righteous. We picked a camp site right in the middle and then chose a random spot about 30 feet from the waves in some previous camper's satanic rock circle to pitch our tent, but eventually we moved it closer to where the picnic table and fire pit were. This campground is pretty primitive as far as amenities go, no showers or any of that unnecessary crap, just some acceptable toilets and running water, so make sure you bring drinking water. It started sprinkling pretty late in the afternoon on our first day, so we were able to enjoy the beach for awhile, and even when it was sprinkling on us, our fire kept ablaze (and so did we...HA!). You can have dogs here by the way, huge plus...and keep in mind there is not much water activity to be done here (swimming, surfing, paddle boarding), you'll want to go more north for that, the beach here is half rocks and half sand, so just prepare to bring yourselves some entertainment. Our entertainment came in the form of the shroom tea we made over our campfire, thus leading Thornhill Broome to be affectionately renamed Thornhill Shroom by us ever after. I back this place 100% and will absolutely return.

    Sunset time and high tide.

This is a cool spot to camp on the beach - make your reservations in advance because they get fully booked. Things you should know about camping here in no particular order: -Parking for one car is included in the reservation. Any car over that is $12. If you are camping there and have people meeting you there for the day, they can park outside on the highway, but note that parking is only until 10 pm. -The toilets are port-a-potties with toilet paper so thin, I'd probably call it half-ply. -There is running water, but out of a hose spigot across the way from each port-a-potty shed (EXCEPT the one near life tower #9). There is also an outlet for drinking water (potable) located near the camp host's site. -Camp as close to the road as possible, because if there is a particularly large swell, the water could rise. When I was there, in fact, all of the camping sites to the right of the entrance were closed due to flooding. -You can bring your dogs! (However this also means that the sand is possibly not the cleanest....) -You can buy firewood on site at the host's RV. $7. -This beach can get WINDY which means 2 things: (1) pitch your tent when it's not windy (2) it can be difficult to get your fire going. -RE: pitching your tent in the wind, there are a lot of smallish rocks on the beach - build up a pile INSIDE your tent at each corner to secure otherwise your tent will blow away. Since you're camping on sand, you can't stake it down using a traditional method. -There are better beaches for playing about 30 minutes north and also other RV camping options. -The majority of campers here were actually in RVs - one had a TV satellite dish and large flat screen going. A lot of them had generators which can get noisy.

Where we pitched our tents. Gotta put rocks in them or the tents will fly away

Came here for a two night stay. Site #16 I believe, right next to the restroom and a ways down the strip of campsites. I really enjoyed this spot for multiple reasons. 1) On-the-sand camping. The site is literally on the sand and you have a whole section all the way up to the water. Although there are no type of walls to divide between you and your neighbor, there's ample space between sites. 2) The location. When you camp here, it's just the beach and the mountains that border it. And PCH. Pretty secluded and I love it. Feels real special and like you're somewhat far from civilization. I guess that's what makes this campsite somewhat primitive. There's not much around this campground as far as stores, buildings and homes go. You have to go about 8 miles or more to get to the nearest grocery store. So pack accordingly! And also, the bathrooms are port a potties & water comes out of a spigot. Thankfully, our site was close to both of these! 3) the memories spent here! I had such a blast at this site with my cousins & friends. It was more primitive than we anticipated but we made due and had a great time. The night sky is priceless and so worth camping under. I don't think I've ever seen so many stars in the sky in SoCal. And saw several shooting stars too! Also spotted dolphins and sea lions here!! Some things to be aware of: It can get hella windy here. And cold. It can be hard to get your fire to stay burning if you don't block the wind from blowing it out at first. You can purchase firewood from the camp host. The fire pit for my site was practically filled to the brim with sand and ash, for some weird reason. So we had to scoop it out with our hands and that was no fun. Maybe bring a shovel in case this inconsiderate thing happens to you. The table is pretty worn out so bring a table cloth and maybe seat cloths too, I got several splinters from sitting on it. It gets dark at night so bring enough lighting to be able to navigate your way around the campground. Careful where you step barefoot, there's some debris in the sand that can puncture your foot. This happened to us and it was not very pleasant. Always wear footwear when walking around the site, especially where the firepit and table are. Toilets were meh. I mean, they are port a potties afterall so mentally prepare yourself for that. No showers either. Overall, I love this place and would recommend going! It's a great getaway that is not too far from home.

In regards to service it was horrible as the ranger Graceyn was extremely rude even laughing at our predicament and saying we were lying about our reservation, it was hard to even begin talking to her as before anything she didn't want to even talk to us and had to be convinced by another ranger to talk to us which was very weird behavior? I've never experienced such ungrounded rudeness before to the point where the other ranger seemed almost apologetic in the stead of Graceyn's behavior. I understand everyone has a bad day or long shift but this was beyond that so i highly do not recommend this place for the horrible communication and service experience. Very disappointing with the whole predicament but silver lining, we were able to transfer to another campground which was the best part of the service there so i'm thankful we at least were able to get that.

There's something about being right by the ocean that instantly slows everything down! The sound of the waves, the open sky, and just being able to step away from everything for a bit. The campsites are right along the beach, which makes the whole experience feel really unique. Waking up and seeing and hearing the ocean just steps away was one of my favorite parts. There's a good amount of space between sites, so you don't feel like you're on top of other campers, which we really appreciated. It also felt very safe. State park rangers were patrolling about every hour during the weekend, and we noticed highway patrol driving through a handful of times throughout the day, which added an extra level of comfort. A few helpful things to know: check in is at 2 PM and checkout is at 12 PM. The camp host sells firewood on site, which is super convenient. The gates close at 8 PM, so if you leave the campground, make sure you're back before then you can leave anytime, but you won't be able to re enter after closing. It can get a bit windy, especially at night, and the highway nearby does get a little noisy in the morning, but it's manageable and didn't take away from the overall experience for us. The bathrooms are porta potties, but they were cleaned often and didn't smell bad, which we appreciated. We spent our time walking along the shoreline, watching the sunset (which is absolutely killer here), and just enjoying a slower pace together. It felt like one of those trips where the little moments meant the most. Overall, this campground made my birthday feel extra special, and it's definitely a spot we'd come back to for another quiet coastal escape. Another simple trip that turned into a beautiful little memory for us.

Thornhill Broome is right on the sand. You park directly at your site and set up camp just steps from the ocean, with the PCH right behind you. The views, the breeze, and the sound of the waves crashing at night make the whole experience unforgettable. The pricing is very affordable, but keep in mind: there's no shade no lights no sinks only porta‑potties It's a very simple, rugged, beach‑front campground -- so come fully prepared. They do sell firewood on site, which is convenient. The closest stores are in Malibu, about a 20‑minute drive away. If you're looking for a true beach‑camping experience with unbeatable ocean access, this spot is hard to beat.
