My friends haven't been on a hike for awhile and this trail definitely, how do you say, owned them? Definitely not for the faint of heart. The trail starts off pretty light, nice and easy. So I thought, smooth sailing from here. Then BAM! Long slippery dirt slope with crooked rocks and a rope for you to glide down with. It's just THAT hardcore. Watch out for poison oak! How does the saying go? Leaves of three, let it be? Chyeah, sounds good. We passed by this cave with beer and some kegs. Where's the party at? Jumped a couple of streams and boulders. More hiking through thorns, bushes, shrubs, and SNAKES! Yep, saw some snakes in one of the rock pathways we walked through. Fullbred kingsnakes slithering around. Might wanna watch out for them, yeah? Got to the slip and slide waterfall. DON"T WIMP OUT. You got here this far, so go on the damn thing. It's very fun and not as scary as you'd think. Just sit on the smooth rocks and the current will wash you down into the bank below. Kinda rough on the butt, but hey, they're cheeky for a reason. Use them. Careful not to relax there for so long because the hike back is harder because it's all uphill and there's no paved trail. We got lost for a couple of minutes until we found a way back. Hint: Just head towards the sides of the mountains. If you're going deeper into the heart of it, then plan on camping there at night. You ain't making it back by dinner time, buddy. Cliffnotes: -Leave EARLY because you'll want to spend time at the waterfall -4 hour trail (to and from) -Pack lightly BUT bring plenty of water -Wear sunscreen or you'll come out as brown as the dirt -Shrubs of poison oak, so watch out -Use the ropes left there by other hikers. This was an incredible hike! I highly recommend it, but make sure to come well prepared! I went on a Saturday in July. It was going to be a high of 78 so we knew it was going to be a hot day. We left for the trail at around 6am. The hike is about an hour drive east of the San Diego area. Parking here can get pretty bad since they don't have a parking lot. You just try and find parking along a dirt road. Since this was a spur of the moment thing for me, I did not bring the proper shoes unfortunately... Big mistake! at one point I slipped and pretty much slid down a good 30 feet before I finally got my grip again. You need a good amount of water (~1 gallon), hiking shoes with a lot of grip and it's a good idea to bring snacks such as granola bars, sandwich and what not. I would also recommend bringing an ice chest with ice cold Gatorade in it so when you get back from the hike you can replenish some electrolytes. The hike itself is beautiful, but since it was summer time the falls had barely any water. It was nonetheless beautiful and an exciting hike to get their. The hike back up was extremely tiring. Like I said make sure you bring enough water!! People sometimes get injured or too dehydrated on this hike. During our visit a sheriff helicopter went along the hiking route to see if anyone was in need of rescuing. The hardest point during the hike is when you have to walk along this one part to get to a rope or tree and climb down. If you slip it's probably around a 15 foot drop. Probably wont be that fun if you fell off of that. This is the most dangerous part so just be careful around this area. This is where shoes with good grip come into play. **If you go during summer, make sure to watch out for rattlesnakes! My group encountered one right next to the trail. A guy in front of us threw a rock at it which is definitely not the smartest thing to do since you'll just be making the snake more mad. If you encounter one, just slowly pass by with extreme caution. ENJOY! read more

This was the hardest hike I've ever done. I literally felt like i I was going to die on certain parts. It was not so much physically challenging (although dont get me wrong, its far from an easy hike), but for me it was primarily a mental issue. It starts off nice and smooth and quickly shifts into an evil monster. Haha. The elevation is high and you have to hike down dirt and rocks with nothing on either side of you to protect you if you fall. This is where my mind started telling me you're going to fall, you're going to die. It was the weirdest thing. With this added anxiety, my heart rate was increased and I was having trouble breathing. What really irks me is that my friends were probably thinking I was out of shape or something, not realizing that I was seriously fearing for my life. Then we got to the rope which is something I feared when reading reviews but it actually ended up being a piece of cake. Once you get to the three falls its a beautiful sight. Make sure you go after a rain fall to ensure a good water flow. The hike back up was just as bad for me. After calming my nerves I got to the steep area where once again theres nothing on either sides of you to protect you in case you slip or fall backwards. I literally crawled during this part and my friend held my hand a few times to pull me up. Ahhh! Even with all this said I would like to try it again one day. I will prepare myself better mentally, rock my hiking boots ( I wore sketchers the first time), and have a good size breakfast( no breakfast last time). Do NOT let these reviews get in your head! The boyfriend almost backed out thinking that it might be too difficult -- yes, it was hard -- but anyone of average fitness level would be able to complete this hike. Maybe not in the fastest amount of time, but with frequent breaks and lots of water, you will be FINE. We began the hike around 9:30am and it was already warm. The drive to the trailhead is at least 20-30 min of winding paved and gravel roads -- a scenic venture through the mountains as long as you don't get carsickness. There are no port-a-pots, bathrooms, or water fountains, so come prepared! We went through about 1.5 liters of water each and completed the ~4.5 mile hike in about 3 hours including a brief dip in the pool and break on the rocks. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER - on a one-way hike, what you slide/climb/swing down, you must hike up. Getting there was a bit challenging at times (mainly finding and staying on the correct trail), but we got to the top fall (just a trickle of water and chest-deep pool (with a silt bottom)) in good spirits and with plenty of energy left. It's coming BACK that's the workout. Again, staying on the main trail is TOUGH. We used my workout tracker to back track after a couple wrong turns. Still, it's not too bad other than dodging the poison oak, ivy, and sumac, until you get back up the rope/tree root section. From here on out, it's miserable. All uphill on all fours, dirt in your mouth, in your shoes, and everywhere else. It's a struggle trying to find footing while climbing up the dirt slide -- I found that my fingertips seemed to have more cling than my shoes did... THEN, when you finally get past that hellish section, it's pretty much uphill (hands on knees, heart pounding in your ears, wondering what's sunburn and what's backpack chafe) until you get to your wonderful modern transportation vehicle where you can (hopefully) blast the A/C and speed home to a pool, a shower (scrub with dish soap to lessen the chances of poison ivy rashes), ICE WATER, and a snack or meal. Again, anyone of average fitness level would be FINE (but miserable) completing this hike. Sure, I might do it again, but not anytime soon, and not unless we got enough rain for a real waterfall. read more

I'm gonna go ahead and 5-star this one. Kinda far and off-road to get to, but it is definitely worth it. I would say the parking is kinda limited, but really you just park on the side of the road as far as you can go. The trailhead is clearly marked, and most of the way is pretty easy to follow. As a pretty frequent hiker, I have to say that this hike includes all your favorites--steep decline with scary gravel/sand slide, foresty-rocky-areas, rope-facilitated climb, decent waterfall with pools at the bottom where you can potentially dip into, and in general a good view of the path you came from. I would say it's a little more intense because of the steep decline/ascent when you come back, so be careful. We didnt go up to the top waterfall, but I heard it's even nicer over there. read more

Amazing hike. Bring: A camelback or similar backpack so your hands can be free. This is a must! I brought 1.5 liters of water and that was enough in 75 degree weather. I always bring snacks as well. I would recommend wearing long pants or at a minimum ankle pants. There are some scratchy parts where the trail is overgrown. Familiarize yourself with poison oak- it's down by the river. You can avoid it if you know what to look for. If you want to swim bring a suit and a light towel. You will want the towel to change (since there are lots of people) but also because the water is super chilly. Maybe toilet paper - there are no bathrooms. Bring sunscreen. I wore my normal workout shoes (they are trail running shoes) and they worked fine. Directions: Take Boulder creek road to get to the trailhead. The road is mostly gravel. I didn't have any issues with my Honda Civic. There is a gate with the trailhead. Park around there. Google maps has "three sisters trailhead" as a search option, we used that to map. Timing: Best time is in Spring due to water flow and temperature. Go as early as possible. We got there at 9 and beat the rush. Temp was about 75 degrees, probably the hottest I would ever do this hike!! It took us 3.5 hours to do the 4.5 mile hike to the upper falls. That timing includes a swim and snack break. Difficulty: I would rank it 4.5 out of 5 because of: the need to scale up the rocks to get to the falls, the crazy sand trap area that is 90 degrees and requires lots of strength (and climbing on your hands and knees basically), and just the fact that you go down first and going up after hiking already is tough. If you are in shape you won't have issues but it will still be challenging in a good way. The hardest part is going back up the sand area. Very rewarding hike overall. Dogs: We read the reviews and still decided to bring our pup. She is scrappy and likes rock climbing with us and is small enough that we can carry her during the tough spots. She made it just fine. We went in 75 degree weather and made sure she drank enough water. It would be really challenging to bring a medium or larger dog that you can't carry or that can't jump over the rocks. You might make it up to the lower falls but there's no way you could make it up to the upper falls without carrying your dog. Be smart about your decision! Babies: No. It would be very hard with a backpack carrier (so many opportunities to fall). And a toddler or kid up to the age of maybe 10 would really struggle doing this hike. I saw a 12 year old who made it to the upper falls. Again, just be smart. -1 star for dumb people. We literally walked by right after someone spray painted /tagged a rock on the trail. We also picked up after others- we grabbed a bunch of thrown water bottles etc. Lots of people without basic trail etiquette I.e. blaring music on the trail. We also saw a lot of people without water, on the ground exhausted, terrified of heights and frozen, etc. Please prepare yourself and respect others! read more

3.5 to be exact. We've been talking about doing this hike for quite some time now. We just had to find out what all the talk was about and if it was truly as difficult as people say. I did have concerns about heat so we decided to come early. Started the hike about 6:20 AM parking lot only had one car. There are two portable bathrooms available no water. Luckily the falls had water when we came today not sure how it will be in the summer months. Which I would avoid due to heat exhaustion. There are a few things we wish we knew before hand going in. I hope this review helps for your first trip. I have to advise anyone that gets car sick, please do not come here or take medicine. The last 7 miles is a windy and rocky dirt road. Even the paved road prior is pretty windy and narrow lanes. Drive slowly you may have to stop to let cars pass. Do not take your nice car here. Also no reception at all even on the drive in. You will have a small bit at the opening of the trail. But most importantly bring a good amount of water! It gets really hot and you will need it for the way back. Don't skimp on water! I also suggest good shoes with heavy traction and good grip. Hiking boots or shoes is highly recommended. The trail is not a maintained trail and some parts are very narrow. You will have to climb over several rocks and boulders. It's very rocky. I didn't use gloves but if you prefer them bring it. You might want for for the rope portion. I prefer gripping the rocks with my hands. Just feels more secure. Clothing, I wore dry fit exercise leggings, Capris could work. There is poison oak here and other thorny brush, I preferred to protect my legs. I also slid down some boulders as well. Some wore shorts but I wouldn't recommend it. Starting off you'll follow the trail to a wood post only marked with numbers go left of that post. Follow the trail to the green arrow on a rock pointing left that is help direct you back out. Go right of that arrow over a few boulders. Then just follow the trail into the falls. You'll start to hear the falls when you get a mile or so in and then eventually see the first one. It's not a set path, some people took different routes to get down. Just be careful, there are ribbons scattered here and there to help guide you. And 2-3 painted arrows but no signs. We felt like we were guessing most of the time. The first fall is at the bottom, there is a large space for you to sit and relax. But if you want to see the other two keep going right. Follow that path up to the second and third fall. You'll encounter the first blue rope tied to a tree. Yes the rope is still there. You'll need that rope to help pull your way up. Using the rocks as footing. At the top of the first set of ropes you'll encounter white ones which will get you to the last fall. That is the tough one. It's a steep and slippery incline. We found another route to the right. It's easier than the ropes but still very rocky, steep and requires some work. Luckily we were first to arrive and had the opportunity to enjoy the top of the falls alone. But everyone is friendly, we stayed at the falls for about 45 minutes met new friends. Some had music playing and some went swimming. The hike back is worse than coming down I feel, it's mainly a uphill incline. Especially the last section getting back to the parking lot it's a huge incline hike. Save some water for the hike back especially since it will be much hotter at that time. Overall it was a tough hike, I would not recommend for a beginner or someone that is not active. Intermediate to experienced. Took about an hour in and out. The falls were not what I expected but it was still a nice sight. And something I can check off my bucket list. The treck here through the roads is not something I want to do again. But I have to say it is definitely worth doing at least once. Especially when the falls are flowing with water. Please head the warmings, do not come during extreme heat, bring lots of water, sun protection, proper clothing and good hiking shoes. Don't bring your pets, it's not a good trail for them. My large group of inexperienced hikers somehow thought it'd be a good idea to come during the peak of summer last year, and MAN were we in for a surprise! The hike down to the falls is not bad, but there is definitely a lot going on. Climbing over boulders, stepping around thin ledges, and sliding down sandy gravel all in extreme heat was all pretty intense. Alas, you reach the 3 waterfalls. When we went, the water level was not very high, so there was a very limited area which was safe to dive off the cliffs into. Unfortunately one of our friends got hurt from jumping out too far into the shallower area and fractured his foot in several places. Lesson learned: if you're gonna jump into shallow water.. try to jump into the deepest part? We must've waded in the water for 1-2 hours dreading the hike back to the car. The hike back is uphill so it's wayy more rough, and there is a part where you actually need to use a rope to climb up the steep incline. We saw groups get helicoptered out at least 5+ times throughout our trek. This is not to scare anyone off, just fair warning to come prepared (lots of water and rest) and have a good time! I've heard and read reviews that this hike is a tough one. I've been on many "tough" hikes so I thought I definitely have to see for myself. Getting there: Use your GPS, it takes you right to it. Had no problems finding it. I recommend going EARLY. We got there around 7:45 and there were only about 8 cars parked so we got close parking. One review said to bring an Adventure Pass which we forgo. We didn't get a ticket nor see any cars with Adventure Passes in them. Not sure if you really need one or not. The hike to the falls: Um....I'm not sure exactly what to say here. Was it a hike? Yup. Was is extremely difficult. NO. Do you NEED the ropes that are in place? No. The first place with a rope, or sting, I would call it, had a line of screeching girls trying to use it. My friend and I went to the right of the "string" and just walked down in the soft dirt. The second rope I also wondered why it was there but realized on the way back it would be helpful in getting up. You don't really need it to go down. When I read there were ropes, I was really excited. But the climb that people are using the ropes for is disappointing. Can you use them, yes. Are they super helpful? Eh, I"m gonna say no. They are more of a convenience for people who aren't used to getting dirty. We hiked along the right and up to get to the top of the falls. It took us just an hour to reach the falls. We sat and relaxed and had some snacks. Watched a few people try and use some lower rocks to reach the top of the falls which was very entertaining. I must say that so far the ONLY challenging part of the hike was that I have had a chest cold for 10 days now so my lung capacity isn't great. I was breathing hard. BUT the elevation change always gets me on hikes like this. The hike itself isn't hard. Not at all. I'm assuming the people that are saying it's "hard" are the ones that call the path around Lake Miramar a "hike". It's beautiful and there was a ton of water. I'm hoping to go back after the next rain to see the difference. This would be disappointing to hike to the top if there weren't waterfalls. On our way back we heard there is another body of water if you follow the water back past the waterfall. I hope to make it there next time. The way back: Pretty easy. We left to go back around 10:15am and it was 85 out. It was hot and it seemed like the majority of people were hiking TO the falls at this time. It was only getting hotter. Hike earlier people, it'll be much more comfortable. The elevation on the way back is no joke. There is a constant steep climb where you could almost be on all fours. Easy, just tiring with the elevation. Again, I was out of breath. Elevation hikes suck. LOL. Took us about an hour and 15 minutes to hike back. We read the average was between 3 and 4 hours. So I'm sticking with my original statement that this hike isn't as hard as everyone says it is. With that being said. I am not an expert hiker. I was involved with a hiking group in L.A where we always went off the beaten path on some pretty wild hikes. I've only been hiking for the last 6 years. Would I take my 73 year old mother on this hike no? But anyone who is active could do this with no problem. They may just be out of breath a little. :) Dogs: We saw about 4 dogs hiking to the falls as we were hiking out. A small 15 pound or so dog, an Italian Greyhound, a black lab and another mix around 40 pounds. This isn't a hike for a dog. I say that only because there are so many rocks and the potential for them to get hurt or want to jump. It was also getting REALLY hot. I hate that people take their dogs hiking in the heat. It's a bad idea. START EARLY if you are taking your dog. Do not start late morning after 10am. My vote: two thumbs up. Would love to do this one again. On a scale of 1 to 10 on difficulty (without taking in to consideration elevation) I give it a 5. Really, it's not that bad. There were ton of people who looked like they were weekend types, let's try something new, we can do this. And you know what? They probably did just fine. What you should bring: A backpack, water (lots of water), snacks, gloves, good shoes (you don't need hiking boots. I wore my hiking shoes for the grip since I knew we would be rock scrambling, but tennis shoes are fine) and a camera. read more

I really enjoyed this hike! Beautiful views! The waterfalls were dried when we went, but there's still water at the top- which was clean enough for swimming! "Hardest hike in San Diego" I hold this statement true. I may have underestimated it toward the beginning because it's a lot easier there, then back. Lots of steep hills, rock climbing, some parts where you use ropes actually makes climbing a lot easier. Getting up to the falls wasn't too hard once you get to the bottom of the first hill. Coming back up the last hills were extremely difficult considering the heat. My tips for you- be prepared. Bring a TON of water. I mean a ton! Stay hydrated but CONSERVE for the hike back. I'm serious. Leave really early in the morning or late afternoon in the summer. Bring more than 2 people, for safety, as there is nearly no cell service. Don't bring your pets! Know your limits! Overall, gorgeous hike. I would do this again! read more

Great hike that was a little tough for some friends and I that don't typically exercise, but we still made it. It was pretty hard to find the trail at times and we spent some time climbing and walking around in atypical trails on the way to the falls. On the way back we actually got "lost" and headed up a trail that ended up being a short cut. I would recommend paying attention to where everyone else is headed and paying attention to how you came down at the beginning. If you don't, you run the risk of making a wrong turn and heading the wrong direction, as I know we and atleast one other hiker that I spoke to did. Tips: 1. As the ranger said, and we agreed with on the way back, you should bring 3 liters of water or more per person on the trip (during the summer). We also had half-frozen Gatorades which were a delicious supplement. 2. Esteban's tip was a great hit, we kept a cooler full of ice and watermelon in the car as a "reward" for making it back only thing we wished we had more of was water! 3. Instead of taking the first set of ropes down, there is a sandy trail that is much easier to the far right of the ropes. It should be fairly obvious. The only downside is your shoes will need to be emptied at the bottom. Coming up, the ropes are easier. 4. Carry a backpack if you don't have a Camelbak and put your water in there as you'll need your hands. 5. Come early to avoid the summer heat. 6. We'll come back in the fall/winter months hopefully when there are actually falls (none on our trip) maybe ya'll want to wait till then as it's just green ponds and trickles right now. read more

This hike was absolutely beautiful! Started around 1, which, in my opinion, was the most perfect time to start because of how strenuous and much of a climb the way back is. *You do not want to be on your way back during the peak times of heat in the day (~12 PM - 3:00 PM). This was a mistake we encountered many people making trekking our way to the falls. There were numerous couples who did not pack sufficient water, (one particular lady who did not look like she would make it, luckily someone in my group had an excess of water and shared a bottle) an older woman who was bleeding from her wrist up from a fall, & I noticed larger dogs on the trail were having trouble crossing streams etc. However much water you just packed for this hike- pack 2 more bottles. Bring plenty of snacks as well and come well energized! Gorgeous panoramics of the mountains, beautiful boulders for climbing, serene falls to relax by. Highly recommend 3 sisters for the experienced hiker! 3 year olds can do this. I've seen it...but this is in no way a leisurely hike. read more

I am an active hiker. I have done hikes like Cowels Mountain, Iron Mountain , MT Woodson, The C, and other hikes around California;yet, this has to be one of the most challenging hikes I have done so far. You will need hiking shoes (I highly recommend it). When you start the course of the trail, you will be going down hill at first. The first mile seems simple and you will have the mine set of thinking that this is going to be simple, but you will end up on top of a mountain top and there is going to be tons of lose gravel and sand. Thank goodness for high socks and hiking shoes (it was my first time wearing hiking shoes btw, I usually wear my Nike free runs) because I was able to stand while traveling downward. The journey down was a tad scary because there is other hikers trying to figure out the easiest way to get down. I notice some hikers who wore regular shoes like converse and they ended up slipping a lot and falling down the sand. Once you finally manage your way out of the sandy region, you will now face giant rocks and water. There will be a rope to help you get down, but I manage to get down by using my arms and butt to slide down. Once your on a flatter area you will hear the water stream and see more giant boulders. After going down hill, you're going to pretty much rock climb and leap from one rock to another to get yourself to the 3sisters waterfall. This part was the fun part. I did not know I will end up rock climbing to get to get to the final designation, but it was worth it. I wasn't able to go in the water once I finally made it to the very top of the waterfall because the pond was only up to my knees. I'm assuming the best time to hike 3 sisters is after the rain. It took me a good hour and half to get to the falls, and spent another hour enjoying the view and the sound of the relaxing waterfall. The journey back to the car wasn't going to be easy. I honestly felt like I spent the whole time back rock climbing. My clothes were super tainted from the sand. But I'm glad I did this hike because it was challenging and I conquer my fear of falling (since I felt like I was going to fall a majority of the time). Things I recommend doing: always bring plenty of water, get yourself a good pair of hiking shoes (I cannot emphasize enough how important this is), bring snacks because this is a pretty long hike. Also, BEWARE of posing oak, there is tons of them!! Overall, this was a fun challenging hike. It was roughly 6.5ish miles and 107 floors according to my Fitbit. I'm glad I spend my valentine day doing this, and I'm still sore from it. read more

First off, I don't think people over exaggerate this hike. I've done this hike many times over the past three years, and have taken many friends to tour this hike. If you are a beginner hiker, I would not recommend this as your first hike, as I have taken fit, athletic friends who really had a tough time getting through this hike on the steep way back. Inexperienced hikers (if climbing to the top third fall) can take up to maybe 6 hours if you're really out of shape. Experienced hikers can do this hike in 3 hours, if you miss the crowds and don't wander above to the third fall. But honestly, climb up past that last waterfall if you're experienced. It's worth it. Bring a lunch and chill in the water, if it's nice enough. There's also some really sweet ponds and small cute waterfalls way up towards Devil's Punchbowl. The ropes are currently back up, which now doesn't give it as much of a challenge as going on this hike without the ropes. So that's helpful. If you want to miss crowds on a weekend, I'd plan on getting there maybe around 6 or 7 in the morning...but you'll run into crowds on the way back up. And to the hikers starting this trek at 16:10 with sandals, a pink Coach bag, and no water...I don't even know what to say to you...except, how much of a last minute notice were you dragged onto this hike just to most likely break your ankle? Honestly, save the rescuers the trouble, and wear proper hiking attire to this hike, and bring water. Watch for rattlesnakes in the summer, and watch for mountain lions if you do want to trek past three sisters towards devil's punchbowl. It's always fun to come back to this hike, as you can always take a new side route and find new little things each time. Definitely recommend going after a rainfall, but don't run on the rock face of the falls, especially with wet shoes. I've seen so many people forget safety and barely miss falling all the way down. Last, but not least: seriously girl with the sandals, pink coach bag, and no water...I don't know if I'm a wimp, or if you honestly didn't know what you were getting yourself into. Great challenging hike! Like many others have reviewed, the last few miles (~8) to the start of the hike was a unpaved, narrow, dirt road, so choose your transportation wisely! TIPS: 1. Hike a week or two after it rains: I went a day after it rained and it was very dangerous to hike to the third waterfall (too slippery) 2. Bring at least 1 Liter: even in 50 degrees weather the trek back was pretty exhausting. Also it helps to bring Gatorade. 3. Wear hiking shoes: it really makes a difference during the winter time since crossing the stream in running shoes will potentially leave you with wet socks :( 4. Follow the arrows: if you hike on the left side of the stream, there will be red/white arrows sprayed painted onto some rocks guiding you to the waterfalls. 5. Follow the pink ribbons: if you hike on the right side of the stream, there will be pink ribbons tied onto tree branches guiding you to the waterfalls. NOTES: 1. Hiked it today for the first time. My boyfriend and I decided to just share a 1 Liter water bottle and ALMOST DiED LOL jk. But SERIOUSLY, bring enough water for yourself! Each person should have their own supply and not rely on others for water because you may be short of water towards the end. Haha. Love him (boyfriend). Bring small snacks... we had bananas and cold sandwiches. Have a cooler in car with extra water for after hike. You will get dirty, bring extra clothes and baby wipes to clean yourself after hike. Don't bring kids or dogs on the hike. Use the ropes provided to climb down and back up. Follow the arrows and you'll find your way! Anyway, go as early as possible, it got 90 degrees around 10:30AM/11. Don't bring kids on this hike or dogs. Use the ropes provided to climb down and back up. I came here Memorial Day and the update is that the falls are pretty dry because of the drought this year :( The falls were more like trickles. We saw a snake in the top sister falls and another snake as we were climbing the rocks to get to the falls. It is my firm belief that anyone can do this hike if they take their time and if they go early. My group got there around 10am and there were plenty of people already there. The hike to the falls is pretty much decline, so it wasn't too bad. I actually slid on my butt a lot... Be sure to watch out for poison oak...there was SO much at certain parts of the hike. Preparing: -I wore a backpack and had tons of water which made my shoulders hurt! I would recommend getting a camelback. -Having enough water is no joke. It gets super hot and the hike back is all incline. The worst parts of the hike also have no shade for you to rest under! -Gloves! They will make a world of difference with the rope and just grabbing hot rock overall. Make sure to bring a good hat too. The sun beaming down on you can make anyone feel faint! -Sunblock. Don't forget to reapply! -Food. Eat a good breakfast before you come too. You will need all the energy you have... Don't think about doing the hike high or drunk either. It's really easy to slip. I saw quite a few people with scrapes on their legs so having a small first aid kit is not a bad idea either. Like everybody said, this hike is HARD. Not for the faint of heart! I'm not an avid hiker. But I like hiking. I've gone hiking on several trails around Southern California and this has to be one of the more difficult hikes. However it wasn't anything impossible. I'm not the most fit person in terms of cardio, but it was still very doable. Rope-climbing is fun. The waterfall was definitely worth it. The most difficult part of the hike is coming back up, after enjoying all the scenery. Don't push yourself though. If you're exhausted, just stop. It's not worth risking your life. I doubt you'd reach that level though. This isn't the Timberline Trail. read more

Caveats: - bring lots of water - start early in the day, as there are no marked trails and you may get lost and need some extra time - Not good for dogs This hike is so worth it because you can see the waterfall early on in the hike. It's stunning and motivated me to do the hike. Its doable, but I would say if you're not in shape, expect to take breaks. When I read previous reviews saying "hardest hike in San Diego" I thought it was an exaggeration, but I would gladly agree! This is a tough and strenuous hike! But not impossible. With the right equipment and planning, you can do it too! First of all, pick a day where it's not too hot. Most of the hike is out in the open sun and IT GETS HOT! To drive to the trailhead is an adventure in itself. I brought my small SUV/crossover and it handled the terrain just fine. You'll be on a windy dirt road for about 10 miles. Parking is limited, go early. The beginning of the hike is easy, then you start your descent. We brought gloves, although they are not essential they really helped us hold ropes and get over rocks. The ropes are thin! And not really secure (they are just tied to branches which look like they can snap). Use caution! I'm sure they are fine but just be aware. It'd be nice if they were more secured into the rocks. After you descend down you start your climb up the falls. The trail goes in and out, but just follow the water, and expect to climb over and around rocks. Once you get to the pools it is very slippery!!!! So if you do decide to take your shoes off and get in, don't slip and fall. The hike back seemed like forever, probably because it was hotter and we were tired. But all in all, it's definitely not for the faint of heart. Last words of advice: bring plenty of water, especially on the hot day, wear appropriate footwear, your Nike gym shoes don't have the traction for the loose gravel on this hike. I am a big fan of hiking and not sure why I haven't been yelping them! This was by far the hardest hike I've done in San Diego. Just a warning that there is a long dirt road to get there, might be good to go in an SUV! There is no trashcans or bathrooms either. Please don't litter! The hike itself starts out pretty easy and it's really easy going down. There are silver spray painted arrows so look out for those! They are there for the way back. It's easy to get to the falls but coming back we got lost and it was a little scary. Definitely wear pants and hiking boots! I made the mistake of wearing capri workout pants and I got cut up a lot on my legs. I don't have hiking boots but will be investing in some after today. Also there is poison ivy. You are in the woods a lot! It's not your average hike. Come prepared. Bring a backpack, sunscreen, LOTS of water, and snacks. It's easy to get really dehydrated. It wasn't that warm today and I can only imagine it when it's really hot out. I wouldn't recommend bringing a dog at all. My friend brought her 7lb Yorkie and it was such a hassle. I saw people with bigger dogs and I'm really not sure how they did it. I wouldn't bring children either as it is really intense and you have to rock climb and literally climb boulders. We didn't make it to the top waterfall but the second one was amazing! I will be back to dominate the top falls for sure! read more

BRING WATER! 5 BOTTLES PER PERSON AT THE LEAST! amazing hike, pretty intense at certain areas where you have to use the rope they provide however du-able. I don't suggest to bring animals. I took my friend on this hike" she's never been hiking before" and she loved it! I wouldn't suggest this for old/ extreme out of shape people. You need a sense of balance. The BEST hike I've found in San Diego so far and that's saying a lot since I'm a Hawaii native. Bring lots of water and don't go in the middle of summer (that's just torture in the heat!). It's a solid workout and the trail is constantly changing so it never gets boring. We hiked the day after it rained and the water was flowing! Don't forget to bring a swimsuit so you can jump in. I think it's dog friendly since we there were a number of groups with their furry friends. Don't forget a dog bowl for them too so they can drink water :) The drive to the hike is long but worth it. Best hike for experienced hikers who are looking for a workout. Be prepared for light rock climbing and as you go up the stream at the end, keep an eye out for trail markings. They'll show you the easier way up stream but if you miss them, no worries, you'll get to the waterfall no matter what. read more

OMG...I LOVED this hike! We got there at 8am on a Saturday and finished the hike at 1:30pm. It was perfect cos it's not too hot. So, beware that the road to the entrance of the hike is SUPER bumpy and your car will come out of there dusty. You're supposed to get a parking permit to park there, but we've always gone w/o a permit and never gotten a ticket *knock on wood* In any case, this hike isn't for the faint of heart. There's a lot of steep areas where sometimes you use a rope to get down or up and scaling rocks. There's no real marked trails, but you can usually tell where you're going. The view of the falls is BEAUTIFUL. Def worth it to come see. read more

Loved this hike, but it was harder than I thought it would be. I wore my Nike shoes and really wished I had listened to the previous yelpers to get hiking boots. Apparently there used to be a rope to help you down a very slippery and steep hill. I almost turned around. But there were so many people struggling with it, we all pulled together to help one another concur the hill. Watch out for snakes! I almost stepped on a rattler. It didn't bother us, but scared the hell out of me. The waterfall is pretty great. A nice rest spot, incredible scene. It was wonderful to take it all in. The way back is a little more tough, being you are going uphill most the way. I suggest lots of water, snacks and proper shoes!!! Enjoy! And be safe! read more

First Yelp review and I had to do this because of a HUGE misconception... I was freaked out thinking I couldn't take my car here because of the "rocky, bumpy" road reviews and how low my car sits. Most reviewers say highly recommend SUV/truck. Absolutely not necessary! It was a gravel road! Obviously I'm not flying down this road like a truck can but it was still doable. So no worries...bring whatever car you have:) The hike: BEAUTIFUL! We started at about8am (get there early!). It was all down hill...the steep part was kind of scary at first but just slide crouched down...it's kind of fun! Took some awesome photos at the upper falls. The way up is what's rough. By that time the sun is over the hills so it gets hot! That's when you need the water. Well worth it. Ps: I would not recommend small dogs and/or dresses on this hike...yes I said dress, a teenager definitely had one on. Not ok Happy Hiking! :) read more

Great practice for an EXPERIENCED, trained hiker, we've been preparing for a Grand Canyon Hike. Lots of sliding down hills and bouldering involved. Water is a must. Passed a rattler within 5 inches. He tried to strike and was late on the rattle. NOT a good trail for dogs. It is too hot for them without dog boot/shoes and not enough shaded for your pooch. Three Sisters Falls is an 8 in difficulty, when compared to Mission Trails hardest trail at a 5. Iron Mountain Trail would be a 4. Mount Woodson Trail would be a 5. GPS showed we covered 2.04 miles from the car to the middle waterfall one way, mind you that took us just under 2 hours. The terrain is really rough and the trip back up causes heat exhaustion in a lot of people. I think people forget about the altitude. The most challenging hike I have encountered in my life so far- a good challenge for avid hikers, but absolutely not recomended for a family hike. You should be fit, unafraid of heights, and capable of climbing, crawling, and sliding. The hike begins at the top of valley and dips down to the bottom of the three sisters' falls in a series if steep slopes and rocky terrain. There are rooes to help you on a couple of the steeper slopes, but don't expect them to be there as it wasn't there for us the first time round (note this is an "unofficial" trail). The trail isn't always well marked, so navigating your way to the actual falls can be a tricky task- make sure you have a savvy leader. Easist way to make it to the falls is to follow the cleared trail down to the valley and follow the dry creek until you see the first pool. View is a typical Cali dry desert scene on the way down. Disappointed upon arriving at nearly dry pool and no falls. The waterfall doesn't exist during the summer, but seemingly not too impressive nonetheless. For me it was a difficult 5-hour hike for a disappointing end reward. Perhaps I may give it a 4 when I see the actual falls next time. read more

I'm not going to repeat too much of what has already been said in previous posts. All I'm going to add is "The Three Sisters" is a wonderful natural resource in our county that is worth seeing. Just be warned that this is not a leisurely walk to the neighborhood pool: It's a hike in the back-country and needs to be treated as such. If you do that you will be fine. You're major enemy here is the sun and dehydration. I did the hike in late April and it was still hot. The falls are in a remote box canyon with little breeze, little cover (especially on the upper trail), and unrelenting sun. Plenty of water is a must (I had three liters and drank them all). Appropriate attire for a hike is recommended also, including sensible shoes with a grip (some of the trail is extremely steep and is made up of loose sandy material). A hat and gloves aren't a bad idea either. One guy lost his footing on the steep part of the trail and slid down thirty or so feet before he could get stopped. He threw his hands down trying to stop his slide and got a nasty road burn on both of his palms for his trouble. That had to hurt. Gloves would have saved him from that (and better shoes would have probably prevented the slide altogether). As a reference I recommend Jerry Schad's "Afoot and Afield in San Diego County." His directions to the falls are spot on. So prepare appropriately, be smart, and enjoy one of SD's natural wonders. You'll be glad you did. Addendum 4/16/13 I did the hike again this year and it was just as fun, but a little less hot, which was nice. The falls were not running as high as last year, thanks to this years dryer winter, but they were still running well enough. Wildflowers were in abundance, as was the ubiquitous poison oak. Beware of that and bring plenty of water. The crowds seem to be larger than last year due to new Cedar Creek regulations. Because of that there are now volunteers from the forest service present at the trailhead checking to see that folks have water and are otherwise equipped for the surprisingly challenging hike. Expect to see them there on weekends. Addendum 3/21/16 After doing the falls this year, I noticed larger crowds than in years past. Obviously word is getting out on social media about this place and the trail condition (trash on the trail, etc) is a testament to that. Word has it (from a reputable source) that a permitting process similar to that being used at Cedar Creek Falls is being seriously considered by the NFS for Three Sisters as well. We'll see what happens. Please be smart out there people or we are going to lose free access to this trail too. read more

From my understanding this hike used to be harder. It's not a bad hike, good views and once you get to the falls you can pick a spot which suites what the party is looking for. There is a nice spot to jump off on the top of the falls!! I enjoyed this jump for sure! read more

Love this hike, I have to say one of the best hikes I have done! Since the beginning I knew it will be great I went out with my bf and some fam. The drive is long and makes you think if you are going the right way, but just keep driving its worth it. Had so much fun rock climbing and hiking back up. Make sure you come early and bring plenty of water good hiking shoes and a snack or lunch. But just keep climbing to the 1st sister, you get a better view! read more

I think people over exaggerate about this hike. If you are in any kind of shape it is absolutely doable. We were down and back in 3 hours, and that's with pausing to sit near the falls and have a rest and snack. Being smart about it is essential of course. Good shoes, hiking shoes are best as there are a lot of slippery areas and rock hopping. Plenty of water since it is much more exhausting hiking back. I went earlier on a Sunday and ran into a lot of people on my way back. Glad I didn't have to wait behind them going down. Weekday hiking would be more enjoyable. I love the steep parts and crawling over rocks, made it more interesting! If you don't like hiking though, I wouldn't recommend it. And please don't do it in flip flops, I did pass someone doing just that. I can see why people have to get air lifted out of there occasionally. read more
