I booked the rental online and got several notifications in the days ahead to check in and skip the line but after trying with all of my different credit cards it wouldn't process the transaction and would just tell me I need to go to customer service. I had a great experience with Thrifty! They've been my go-to rental spot for the last 3 years when I make my annual trip to PHX. I was only in town for 2 days, and picked up a sleek little kia. I was waiting in a huge line, and saw their "skip the line" QR code, snapped that, bing bang boom, I said peace out line, and cut through the queue on my way to my car. This also helped avoid those pesky upsell questions, and I was in my car quickly. Getting out of the garage was alittle bit of a wait, but I was happy. The car got around great, and when I headed back to the airport, I stopped at the shell to fill up. I am reviewing my bill am happy to see for the days it was only $81. Extremely Disappointed - Hidden Fees and Overcharging I booked a car through Thrifty for three days at what I thought was a reasonable price of $214. However, I was shocked to discover I was later charged an additional $413, bringing my total to over $600 for a short rental. Among the unexplained charges was a mysterious $175 fee that no one at the desk could clearly justify. I returned the car in perfect condition, on time, and with a full tank--yet still ended up being hit with excessive and vague charges. This feels like nothing short of a scam. What started as an affordable rental turned into a costly mistake. Transparency is key in any business, and unfortunately, Thrifty has failed on that front. What should've been a simple 15 min process took a nearly a hour and some change. Staff was nearly useless and did not care and often times there be only 1 person working the counter with a line of nearly 50 people with the manger often times coming out the office to look at the lines from her door and then go back in with no additional help what's so ever. Never rent from Thrifty. They asked if both my husband and I would be driving. Proceeded to add me as additional driver. Never said there was a charge for a spouse to drive. I actually never did end up driving the car. Customer service at corporate said only way to waive charge is if both my husband and I have a AAA card attached to the rental agreement. I have AAA, but we aren't both signed up. We were never told of a charge, nor asked if we had AAA. Very few if any rental agencies charge for spouses. I'm sure they could care less that they lost a customer, but just beware if you ever use this company. read more

C-R-I-M-I-N-A-L It's really hard to keep from spew a long string of negative explitives about this franchise. (So I totally get why other have left such messages that Yelp does not recommend that you read. But this Thrifty has been taking advantage of people for many years and the Yelp score shows how cosistently horrible they are and have been for so many years. Their normal scam is to try to charge customers more than their reservation price even though the reservation says clearly, "ALL TAXES AND FEES INCLUDED." They claim that 3rd party vendors' amounts are approximations. In calling vendors, they will tell you that they are, by law, required to post only what they are given from Thrifty, nothing more, nothing less. So if fees aren't included, it is because Thrifty has chosen to list the reservations this way, i.e., scam customers. But this is nothing compared to what happened to me this last week. I signed a contract for $100+, and when I returned everthing normal and in good condition, I was billed $312... ...for absolutely no reason. (Hey, this sounds just like some other reviews here going back years!) They stated that their system showed that everything was "normal" at $312 and were totally unwilling to change until I could find my original signed agreement. What would have happened had I not had the extra time to find the original, argue with them and prove to them what I signed. Most customers won't have this time at the airport and will be left to deal with the 800 number customer assistance which is even worse! Why couldn't they produce a copy of what I actually signed vs some trumped up contract? When I proved they were wrong they changed my price back with no apologies nor admission of goof up on their part. Another scam is their car return process, charging full day vs hourly rates. They will attempt to get away with as much as they can. A special note to folks who have chosen work at this branch: do yourself a favor and don't soil your reputation by enabling such business. Sales managers are not incentivized to coach you to act ethically. Accept unethical sales practices at your reputation's own peril. read more

Thrifty added a $250 cleaning fee to my final bill without providing a single photo, inspection report, or itemized explanation. My receipt shows the car was returned with fuel at 100% out and 100% in, and there was no spill, damage, or unusual mess. Thrifty's own public policy says extra cleaning charges range from $50 to $250, depending on the circumstances, yet they imposed the maximum amount without supplying any proof. This looks arbitrary, excessive, and unsupported. I am formally disputing the charge and would urge customers to review post-return charges very carefully. read more

I booked a car through Hopper for $96, which they accepted--but when I arrived, they refused to honor the rate. I was charged far more than agreed, and despite submitting multiple claims, it took them over a week and a half to respond to a single email. They are now claiming that the $96 rate was honored, but I have the itemized receipt and did the math--it's clear that I was overcharged. Terrible customer service and experience. It all comes down to the poor decisions made by corporate that set the employees at this rental station up for failure. I landed in Phoenix at about 9:45 and it took us about 45 minutes in line to be assisted. The line was long when we arrived and just grew longer and longer. They only had 2 people working the counter and they were both off at 12am. We asked what happens when they got off, if someone comes in to replace them or they close? And the worker said they just close! The worker said "I'm sure someone at the other counters (referring to the other car rental companies) will assist them! Even if there are 30+ people in line, which is likely what happened Friday before Labor Day. We finished at the counter at 10:45pm and there was so many people in line. Absolutely no way they were getting through that line before 12am. When we went down to get the car, there were atleast 20 people standing around waiting. Turns out they didn't have any cars available! The workers were quoting everyone a minimum of 2-3 hour wait, in hopes that someone would return a car and then they could hand it over to someone new! Ridiculous. They had a ton of electric cars available still and we were lucky to snag one of the Teslas. We didn't want an EV because we were driving far distances within the state, but we really had no choice. At this point it was 11pm. We had a 2.5 hour drive to our hotel and had to be up the next morning to drive 4 hours to the next city. We took the Tesla and left but having an EV was such a hassle throughout our trip. Corporate really needs to figure their sh*t out. How do you take a reservation without actually having cars available!?! And the poor workers at the front lines have to deal with the angry and frustrated customers when it's not even their fault! TERRIBLE business model. He gave us a good car and we were about to leave when this bum walks up to us and says you can not use this car. I said, "why can't we use this car we got upgraded to this car from the manager of thrifty". The guy then says, "You can't use it and you have to use another car". An absolutely horrific experience, and if only we knew in hindsight. We were lucky enough to be second in line, but honestly, where we stood in line made no difference because these thieves get every last one of us. The process took about 10 minutes and cost us our sanity, money, and credit. Absolutely awful what they do to customers. I believe it was Damian that assisted us. I could be making that up. Older black gentleman. Calling him a gentleman is very kind - especially when you assist in fraud. He asked us if we wanted the additional insurance and my husband, clear as day, declined. That didn't matter since they have an agenda. We got our brochure receipt and were pointed in where to pick up a car. Fast forward a week after our honeymoon and we realized multiple charges that were not permitted - one being additional insurance. Multiple calls to customer service and we got no where so we reported it as a fraudulent charge to our CC company. Fast forward four months and they had the nerve to put us in collections!!! When I called their collections customer service department, I finally got everything settled. Granted, it took me two months and multiple follow-up calls, along with an email. If there is one thing you can get from this review, it's DO NOT RENT WITH THRIFTY. It may be thrifty to start, but it will cost you EVERYTHING in the end. We will never recommend anyone we know to do business with Thrifty and Hertz...ever. I hope their business falls apart with the dollars they steal from innocent families. read more

I guess this is where I went wrong. This is my first time with Thrifty. The name says it all on the product just not the price. We thought we were getting a great deal on a car by booking way in advance. When we arrived for the car they said they were not available and we would need to pay for the upgrade for a car to get us through the mountains. So with not much else to do and it being midnight we paid. We got a Ford Explorer. Picture this ... coming home on a 4 hour drive with your stereo stuck on a Bible station that doesn't not come in clearly from antelope canyon and Grand Canyon. If you can only imagine how droopy that made our eyes on a long road trip after a long day of hiking. We turned the car off and back on and did everything we thought to make it work but nothing. Just a blank screen that won't control anything. Time to return the car.. we get told by the parking lot guy that they have had so many complaints on this with the explorers and have had sooo many recalls. He points us to management and so we travel up the escalator to talk to the absolutely unhelpful manager that asks us if we called roadside assistance? Really? In the middle of nowhere? Did we call roadside assistance? We just wanted the "upgrade" money back. Apparently you need to call roadside assistance for that... who knows? NEVER EVER EVER USE THRIFTY! I have 100% learned my lesson on not only using this company but also paying to drive vehicles with recalls. I definitely don't think it's legal to still rent out a vehicle with a recall. read more

I made the mistake of renting from Thrifty. I initially booked online for a rental car for about $719. Before booking I called them and asked if the SUV I was considering had 4 wheel drive; they said it did, and I continued with my booking. When I arrived at the airport to pick it up, they told me it was not 4 wheel drive. They offered to upgrade me, but with the amount extra they wanted I refused. However, they did offer an upgrade to something with all wheel drive for a smaller increase, so I took that. They told me this upgrade was an extra $25/day. Fine. They didnt have an AWD SUV themselves, but they were able to get one from another rental car company on site and rent that to me. I never dealt with another rental car company through getting the AWD vehicle. After 2 weeks I returned it (had no problems along the way) and Thrifty emailed me a bill. They charged me an extra $1851 (this was in addition to the $719 I already had paid)! Of this, the upgrade was $375 and taxes and fees were around $475. The rest came from Thrifty provided insurance and premium roadside assistance, both of which I refused, and overinflated taxes. The tax rate listed was 15.6%, but based on legitimate charges, they taxed me at a rate of 39%. I called them as soon as I discovered this and they said they'd refund the amount to me, but they never did. I will never rent from these people again. Here's a tip - don't rent from anybody at the Phoenix airport rental car center. I had to pay between $300-400 in fees just because my car came from there. There has to be another place nearby you can rent from. read more

I had a pretty bad experience in Orlando airport where we waited for an hour and then the clerk was telling us the car we reserved was not available and tried to push us into a pricier vehicle, but at the end, we still got the car we reserved. I then had a stellar experience in San Diego when there was no line at all and the friendly clerk told me I could choose one of the 7 minivans on the lot. So, I thought, maybe Orlando was a fluke and seeing that the price was very good, we booked it again. We arrived to the counter around 8 PM, a long line of people. I say, OK, this is the repeat of Orlando, we need to be patient and prepare for 1-1.5 hour wait. Boy, was I wrong. I had no idea what we were in for. There were only 2 clerks handling what seemed like 50 people and the line was moving super slow. Then, I started hearing they had no cars. Even if you reserved and prepaid, which is what we did. Two hours later, we finally get to the counter. They tell us, there are no cars, but the cars are trickling in one by one from the returns, so we need to get a waitlist number and then it would be 15 minutes per person on the list, so our numbers (two families) were ironically 6, 7, I figured, another 1-1.5 hours. 2 hours pass, no updates. Then, someone else who was in line said he heads there was a utility van available. WE went to the counter again and asked for it because we had no choice at that point, two families, 8 people, 8 luggage pieces. The van had no room in the back for luggage, and the seats would not drop so somehow, we were able to fit the luggage between the seats. Good thing that I bought a hotel in Phoenix and right by the airport! We were told to return the next morning and exchange the van for the 2 minivans we reserved. When we returned, we had to wait another 2 hours till we finally were able to get the cars we got. They were trying to put each family in Chevy Blazer. I am never renting with them again and I have already contacted a consumer advocate who deals with travel disasters. read more
