I was filling my car up at a near by gas station when I mistakenly left the key on while filling up. Upon completion of fueling my cars battery died. I walked up the street to thrifty and asked for a jump start and they did not hesitate to grab one of their rental cars and drive to the gas station and give me a jump start. When I went to tip the gentleman for his help he declined even when I was persistent that he accept my tip for saving my butt. It was very kind of them to help me out! read more

It is not a good idea to rent here. Several reasons for that. Their office is far away from the airport. Unlike other major rentals whose shuttles keep going to the airport continuously, they send their shuttle only on demand. And because they are far away, it takes a while to arrive. Their systems are very primitive i.e. very little automation. YouYp need about one hour each for check-in and check-out. Their staff is a bit too relaxed, taking time out for chatting although there is a long line of customers. They can quickly become very rude if you point out this fact to them. read more

if I could give this place zero stars, I would. Right now I am on the phone with Bank of America, disputing the additional $140 they charged my account. First of all, the car was filthy -- stained seats, dirt all over the back and front seats, and when I opened the arm rest in the backseat, a cup full of cookie crumbs fell out. It was also scratched and dented on all four sides. I had to actually argue with the sales associate to put it in the file so I wouldn't be blamed for the damage. He kept telling me "don't worry about that". Returning the car was an absolute nightmare. Despite my giving my flight information to the sales associate when we picked up the car, and letting them know my outgoing flight left at 6:00 am, the place was closed, the gate was locked, and there was nowhere to drop the car when I showed up to return the car at 4:30am. I called the office, it was closed. Called Thrifty's sales office, that too was closed. Finally I called their 24 hour automotive help number and was told that I'd have to leave the car at the airport with the keys locked inside and incur a $75 charge. That is ridiculous. Booked through Expedia as I have on many occasions in sju. First time with thrifty. Amount due was 50$ more than quoted with no ad-ons or extras. Rep said that these were local taxes because thrifty is a franchise. Expedia agreement clearly states all mandatory fees and taxes are included in rate quote. Thrifty refused to speak to Expedia rep. Made a new reservation through Expedia at Alamo. The rate there was exactly what was quoted. Beware of thrifty!!! read more

The one at the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport avoid this rental place , I had a reservation for a small sub on December 23 at 10:00pm i was there around 10:15pm because i was waiting for my luggage , when i show up to the counter there were 2 people in front of me the first one got his car the second and me didn't because the guy at the counter said that he closed at 10:00 and basically he didn't care if we wanted to continue with the rentals we had to go back the next day , the guy in front of me left and I ask would you provide me a ride to my place tonight and come back here tomorrow to get the vehicle he said no im closed but another guy continue working with the first customer the other guy wasn't doing anything and he didn't care , I end up going with budget avoid this company I should of known better after seeing all the bad reviews avoid this place bad customer service and experience. read more

We went here because we got tired of paying 18 dollars for every taxi ride! The customer service desk was whatever, but they do have some polite employees. Luis brought our car out and he gave us great directions on how to get back to the hotel. I asked him for radio stations that play hip hop music and he said they were all mixed. Then he took time to set a couple different radio stations in the car for me. Small things like that make a huge difference. On the ride to the airport the shuttlw driver was really friendly and polite! read more

Don't rent here unless you want to be ripped off. I rented a small Chevrolet SUV on 1/20/19. Inside was fine, but there was lots of scratches, dents, and prior repairs on vehicle, which was noted and the lot attendant wrote them all down on the condition slip (in Spanish). I turn the car in 3 days later in same condition early in the morning due to my flight, and leave the keys in the box as they told me. Then, never sending a receipt or letting me know anything, they charge me 4x the agreed upon price due to "damage"....which they tell me only a week later after I call to find out what happened. They said they would call me back with details, but no, "Wanda" never calls, so I go through another 30 minutes on hold routine, talk to a "manager", who wants nothing to do with this, and puts me on a 15 minute hold for Wanda, who finally comes on and says they had to replace the back bumper, huh? Still don't have any details, which were promised (again). Thought that Thrifty would not rip you off, but I guess lesson learned. read more

It's day after Thanksgiving. I have a car reserved for my family vacation. Our flight is late getting into the airport. I go to pick up the car. Thrifty has conveniently canceled my reservation without any notice leaving me completely stranded because I arrived two hours after my original pickup time. No apologizes. Why didn't they try to call me to see if I was still coming? Why didn't they charge my credit card - I made the reservation with it after all. No explanation. I see cars on the lot. Why can't I get of those? It's been reserved. Oh, you mean like mine? Like the one you rented out from under me you cheap shite? This place is poorly operated and treats its customers like trash. Thrifty car rental airport location in San Juan Puerto Rico. The car rental experience was average. However one week into my vacation I find that the rental has a flat tire. I called the San Juan office where I rented the car to see if they can make arrangements to have road service come out and change the tire. After speaking to a very surly Rep. he basically told me it's my problem. Thrifty do's nothing to help as far as road assistance. So if your rental breaks down your basically screwed. So here on may lovely vacation I find myself spending beach time changing a tire and dealing with its repair. Perhaps I should bill them for my time. read more

I rented the car and purchased insurance through carrentals.com. The shuttle was quick, the driver was charismatic, and the ride was fine. The guy who inspected our rental was amusing. Everything else was sub par. First off, I was informed that the insurance I had purchased through the website was worthless, since Thrifty doesn't accept it. So I had to buy more insurance. Second, when they found out I'd be driving on toll roads, I had to buy their easy pass. Their easy pass service costs around $2/day. Since I would only be going through two $1 tolls, I tried to decline. To decline the service costs $2.50/day! To opt out of a pointless service costs more than to buy the pointless service. Make sense? No? We're on the same page. Third, while they were inspecting the car, my boyfriend was taking picture of everything. Good thing, too, because when we returned the car, they wanted to charge us for a dent in the bumper! My boyfriend practically had to shake the guy to get him to look up from the fee form and look at the time stamped picture. Additionally, I bought the stupid insurance! The insurance that was supposed to cover the dent anyway! What are you trying to charge me for?! When I got back to Chicago, I got in touch with carrentals.com to refund the "worthless" insurance. They asked to see the invoice from Thrifty. I had only received a paper receipt, so I called the office at 3pm. No answer, no voicemail, eventually disconnected. I called national, and they told me the San Juan location operates independently, and there was nothing she could do but give me the number I'd already called. What? You just looked me up using my confirmation number, but you can't email me my invoice? This car was supposed to cost $195, but I've already been charged $283. I'm obsessively monitoring my bank account to see what else they try to charge me for. read more

I wish I could give zero stars to this place. I don't even know how they're still in business. Upon arrival, it took nearly an hour to get my rental car. This is on top of the 15 minutes it takes to get from the airport to this location with the shuttle. When I got to the counter, three people were working and only one person was in front of me. The people working were bantering in Spanish, horsing around and clearly didn't care at all that there were customers in front of them. I know island time is a little bit different than New York time, but seriously, this was ridiculous. When I finally got my ugly Ford Fusion, the car had long scratches all the way around. At least the attendant was nice enough to mark them down on the contract in advance. Anyway, having a car was probably the only positive experience of renting with Thrifty. At least it didn't break down, which surprised me since the car had over 170000 miles on it. What a load of garbage. The worst part of the experience was when I returned the rental. We were in a bit of a rush for our flight due to the horrible traffic in PR. The guy checking things in didn't care to help us at all until he was done SLOWLY checking another car in (the guy who had that one was clearly annoyed at the poor service.) When I asked again if he could get someone else to help check me in, he yelled at me telling me that I'm not his boss and that he's the boss and that he would help me when he was ready to help. The whole interaction really surprised me because I had been so kind to the team throughout my entire transaction. Our car had a leaking tire to start off with, they don't open early so if you have a 7am flight you just have to leave it the day before. I left personal items in the car called at least 10 times when I got someone they just gave me the run around.so my id and credit cards had to be reported stolen since they aren't lost and have not been returned by thrifty! When I made it to the LMM airport counter, they added a fee because I was picking up my car at the airport and they wanted to charge me $7 per day for a toll service even if I didn't use it. The customer support here is terrible, it took us 2 hours to get our car. The first reason was how long they took with each customer. A lot of outdated practices, paperwork, etc. The second reason was that they tried to give me a Fusion when I had reserved a Taurus. I talked to the customer service person behind the desk and he told me that they were in the same size class. I said that they weren't and asked for proof that they were. He did not even looked at me and just stated "it's in the web site". Of course, that is BS. The Fusion is a standard car and the Taurus is a full size car via the Thrifty website. All of the employees are overworked and most do not care at all for the customers, they just want to end their shift and get out of there. Just rent somewhere else and avoid all this trouble. The other reviews state frustrations about insurance and the toll tag. There are valid reasons why they ask what they ask for: 1. Proof of Insurance - The roads in PR are full of maniacs so the probability to get into a fender bender are very real (like I did). 2. Toll Tag - Yes, some are cashless now so save yourself from being frustrated and just get it. read more

THE WORST CAR RENTAL LOCATION EVER! After a pretty long flight, with a layover (w/ 2 kids), we were exhausted and just wanted to get to our hotel fast. We were picked up by their shuttle service and dropped off at their location. When we arrived there were only 2 people in front of us, yet only 2 agents working, and we waited 45 mins to get served! (By this time the kids are antsy and running all over the place.) I gave the guy (A TOTAL JERK, who could care less about customer service) my reservation number from my online booking for a $14 /day compact rental that I booked before we left for our trip. If you're under 25 you have to pay a $20 fee each day on top of the rate which was already applied to the reservation beforehand. When I gave him my ID and credit card to process the rental, the guy asks for a copy of my insurance, I didn't have it so I had to call my insurance co. to fax a copy of my policy over (this took another 20 min.) THEN he hits me with a receipt totaling $535. WTH!? I showed him my copy of the rental details displaying the $14 + $20 fee per day charge and the total was $204. I asked him, how did my total almost triple in price? He said the reservation that was placed for me was an estimate on prices and that these were the rates. REALLY!? I have the details in front of me on my phone and he isn't going to honor the prices that I booked. Nowhere on my document did it say anything about "these rates are an estimate." I ended up moving off to the side and calling my agency and they agreed with me! The prices on the receipt should be honored. This jerk rolls his eyes and says "These are our rates and we can't change them." I told him to cancel our reservation and that I wasn't signing the receipt, to refund the purchase on my card. He said "Ok, since today is Friday and it's after 5 the main office is closed for the weekend so the money should be back on the card by Tuesday the next week at the latest. THIS PART REALLY JUST TOOK IT OVER THE TOP. He charged my card, without even telling me the total beforehand, and I won't get my money back until my vacation is half over!?!?!? BS! I asked for the manager, he wasn't there and this jag off said I could call on Monday and speak with him. I SPENT 2 1/2 HOURS IN THIS HELL HOLE DEALING WITH THESE UNBELIEVABLE PEOPLE! I can't believe this is how they run their business. I ended up going a few doors down to Enterprise and they gave me a great price. Landed outside rush hour window; around 10AM...waited over 30mins for Thrifty shuttle. Other rental companies had frequent shuttles driving around, local office phone number was out of service (unable to even leave a message "mailbox full" was the recording I got). Called 800 number and they were also unable to reach local office. When driver showed up, no apology, not even a greeting. Thrifty outlet did not even have a water fountain to get a glass of water. Transactions take forever, staff lacked motivation or basic manners; no welcome at all. Had to ask for a map, not even offered one. Very poor impression! Upon returning the car, only 1 clerk at desk and he seemed lost, very slow service...he said he needed to get a signature apparently from a manager but he had gone on break (it was not even 12N or "cafecito" time). My husband was held at gunpoint (2 guns, one at his head) outside of this establishment when returning the car. The gunman took his phone and the car 15 minutes prior to it opening at 5:45am. There was a security guard who turned a blind eye. No one there was even nice to him after it happened. Instead of a few kind words, they scolded him for getting there 15 minutes early and said he should have known better. But the real trouble is they immediately charged our credit card $26,400 for the entire car instead of giving us the proper paperwork to process the insurance claim. Then they have been uncooperative in giving us the needed paper work to file the claim. Our credit card doesn't even have that much credit on it but they manipulated the weekly rental approval to allow the charge. They have hung up on us and everyone you speak to is rude. I have rented from Thrifty Car Rental in the states before and have had great service. When I called the main customer service headquarters to report them, I was told that they aren't really a part of Thrifty Car Rental, they are a franchise and they can't really do anything about it. Worst car rental facility ever!!!!!! Have rented from Thrifty in other locations with reasonable service but not here!! It takes 45 minutes to well over an hour just to rent a car and another 45 minutes or more to return the vehicle. They rent cars they don't have you won't find this out until after you finally get to the front of the line and spend 15-20 minutes with an agent. After that's done you have to wait for a car to be returned for you to get a rental car. They charge your credit card $500 extra when you rent even with an insurance card! In order to get that back you can't quick return the vehicle. You must go inside and wait the 45 minutes to return your car. After waiting an hour for a shuttle, that we had to run down as it zoomed past us, we waited another hour and a half to have them "try to find" a reservation we already paid for. The line was out the door you would think someone who have announced that to the line instead of us waiting for HOURS. I guess there is a reason why Thrifty Puerto Rico has earned 2 stars. I recently rented from Thrifty while on vacation last week. To begin my list of complains, the car broke down 10 minutes away from the airport with my 3 kids (ranging from 2 - 8 years of age) inside. I specifically told Road Assistance that I was with the kids. Tow truck shows up and explains that he could fit us all in his tow truck to take us back to Thrifty location. Hmmm, so kind of him but no THANKS! I called the store and was told by the rep that they will send a driver with my new car, a bigger one for the inconvenience... Really?... And had the driver go back in the tow truck so I could be on my way to "enjoy my vacation". Tow truck ask me "are you sure they are going to pay for the extra time its going to take?" Guess no Mr. Tow because I then received a call from Thrifty asking how I felt about staying behind at the scene so my husband can go with the tow truck. And I wish I was joking when I say she seriously asked me that. To make matters worst the driver who picked us up was instructed to take us back to Thirty's location for the exchange. No worries I just came to PR to hang in San Juan with the Thrifty crew. At the location we were given a car that was dirty. Not even the coffee stains on the cup holders had been cleaned from the previous customer and the car smelled. Third car seemed to be the charm and we finally took off at 2:30p from 11:00 when the fiasco started. Finally made it to our lunch location just to find out the car beeper didnt work. Needless to say I took the chance of the car been stolen because I was not going to drag the kids back to Thrifty. Now that we have return the car the charges to our credit card are wrong and I get an email stating that there solution was to refund the $10 gas charge because they "appreciate my business". Called number on the email and Mr. Jaime Adrover, who I hope its just a self-proclaimed manager, has hung up on me 5 times. The poorly trainer employee continues to tell me I dont want to fight as if I was his wife and hang up. Customer service at its best. With all that been said just know you are taking a chance by going with them. With so many competitors down the same street such as Payless, Avis, Hertz, Adamo, anyone at that, I bet you are better off going with someone else. read more

I don't feel like giving any stars... The worst customer experience EVER.. It really ruined our vacation mood..we rented a car and had a flat tire.. I changed it to spare tire ns returned the car.. the folks replaced it... Then there was this employee who gave us the keys.. And said return the car at 4 pm.. While the actual rental was at 12:00pm.. When I returned the car these guys charged me an extra day.. Even when I said one of your employee mentioned the 4 pm time and I had the time in writing from him on the sheet... They said they don't care what the employee and when asked about the employee they said he was not working that day.. They kept arguing and disrespecting .. And started questioning back to us... When asked for supervisor assistance.. He went inside and came out saying supervisor was on break... When insisted on talking to a supervisor.. The guy who was arguing said he is the supervisor which clearly he was not... Later on he again said the supervisor is on a break and will come after an hour.. We waited for hour and left... Luckily the shuttle driver was very polite and thoughtful.. He listened to us and cheered us.. He deserves all possible stars.. But thrifty definitely lost a customer for life.. this would be a good rental location for the highly informed consumer, looking for the cheapest rate. know the hidden fees that may apply, and know all the terms and conditions. i would rent with another company if i did it again. someone else in the group setup the rental car and found the cheapest rate possible with as little research as possible. the hidden insurance fee, slow customer service, and inconvenient location are why i'm giving the low marks. My issues: 1. BE AWARE, the Puerto Rico Thrifty location requires written proof of rental coverage in your personal automobile insurance. meaning, you need to bring a printout of your insurance policy and current card to avoid the rental insurance cost. therefore, the rate we were quoted was not the rate we were charged. 2. our car was fine throughout our trip, but while we waited to get our car on the first day two cars came in that had maintenance/repair issues with their rental. 3. our flight arrived late and we missed the closing time. other companies located right at the airport were still open. we had to take a taxi to our hotel that night, then back to the airport in the morning to get the thrifty shuttle (our taxi driver couldn't find the thrifty location and we weren't able to find it using the best of our internet searching capabilities). 4. the offsite location is a bane. it's difficult to find the location and get the car back there. we are all savvy map users and had a bit of difficulty getting back to the location. take a gps point while you're there or be good at remembering the location. there is a tricky exit to get there and many one-way streets around here that will trip you up. add extra time to get to the airport for finding the location and for the shuttle you'll need to take. read more

I rented a car from the thrifty located at the airport in San Juan. I normally don't rent with thrifty but found them on Priceline. I am very disappointed in my experience and will not be renting from thrifty again. I will also tell all of my contacts via social media to do the same. First of all the car was pretty banged up. It was a Nissan Versa with a big dent on one side. A cracked rear light cover, multiple deep dark scratches. I rent regularly from enterprise and have never received such a subpar vehicle. A rental car should look better than my own car. I had to spend my vacation driving around in a vehicle that was clearly in an accident and never repaired. Secondly I had to pay $5 a day for 5 days for tolls even though I told the representatives we would only go through tolls on one day. The last thing that really is just unacceptable is that when reserving the car I stated the car would be returned at 4. We checked out of our hotel and proceeded on to the airport which normally takes 15 min. Unfortunately there was some type of accident or something on the road we were on and there were several blockades and multiple police officers in the street. Traffic was bumper to bumper and at a standstill. It was a very nerve wrecking experience especially bc we were very close to missing our flight. An hour or so later we finally arrive to return the car. I explain the ordeal to the Thrifty representative and he does not care. No compassion no nothing. I was frazzled and stressed and about to miss my flight and he said he had to charge me $7 for being late. Seriously? Thrifty can't do without $7? What ever happened to customer service. I wasn't late bc I was at the beach. I was sitting in traffic. He did not care and I was horrified. I also couldn't stay to fight it bc we literally had to run to catch our flight. I called today to try to get the charge reversed and was told they couldn't help me and to call back when a supervisor is available. So now Thrifty wants me to play phone tag all day. Never again. This past Thursday my husband and I had to fly in to San Juan puerto rico due to a family death. We had a reservation for a rental car. Upon arrival there was a lady and a gentleman working at the counter and there were only 4 customers ahead of us in line. We waited over an hour to get up to the counter, once at the counter I was informed in a very rude way (as if I was a bother)by the gentleman working that they did not have any cars available and that I had 16 people ahead of me. I explained my situation and he stared at me blankly and said you could wait however long for a car to come in or you could look somewhere else. I gave him my number as i was desperate to get to the funeral. I walked over to Alamo where very friendly and understanding staff greeted me and made sure i was in a car within 20 minutes. Almost 3 hours later I received a call from a lady telling me they now had a car. Needless to say thanks to careless employees I will never use this rental company, nor will I ever recommend renting from them. It seems to me they way overbooked and didn't not even care the problems that it would cause their potential customers by not having cars available. We have been there three times and used thrifty every time, probably because we knew what to expect after the first visit. I always reserve on their website before going. I did do my homework and knew they would try to have me use their ins. so I had my card. We do see the same employees each year. The second year we reserved we had to wait about an hour or an hour and a half to get our car. I'm not sure why, since we saw people that arrived after us getting cars sooner. An employee noticed our wait and got us a new car and apologized for our wait. I guess I wanted to put out there that 3/3 times things were just ok. Time wise, you have to plan ahead. If the rental place only opens at 6 am, and you are pressed for time, maybe pick a rental agent at the airport. Last years visit was ok but months after returning home I noticed a $2.40 charge on my credit card. I called card company and they said call Thrifty to see what it was for before putting a stop to the charge. I called and was told to contact someone in the office.I called three times and never got a response so charge was taken off and they were blocked from making any more. that seemed shady since the person I spoke with told me when to call back and get someone to look it over. It was affordable though and my only other advise, look at map they provide on what exit to take for the drop off. If you don't you will have fun trying to find it! read more

I rented a car from them in December 2014. The entire process and experience was not bad. Getting the GPS to get me there was an issue to return the car, but that is not really their fault. The reason for the 1 star is that I just noticed on my credit card statement for February that they charged me $5. I normally don't scrutinize my statements that closely but I'm glad I did this time since the $5 could have slipped my radar. I disputed with AmEx and immediately it was taken care and closed within a day. They obviously backed down quickly when they were questioned this charge. When I got to the counter, they said they had no cars available, even though I made a reservation, and I would have to wait ANOTHER 40 minutes. I didn't have a nice experience with Thrifty at San Juan Airport. I booked the car rental service originally from Expedia. The total cost is 99.35 with taxes and fees included. However, I ended up paying 170.74. I asked what are the additional charges. The guy just kept saying it's "standard fee". I feel rigged. I will never rent a car from this place!!! They also lied and said I had to buy an electronic pass because the toll road don't accept cash and it's a 35 penalty if I get a ticket. read more

Worst car rental experience start to finish. We waited for 30 minutes for the shuttle to pick us up from the airport. When we returned the car we were there for 45 minutes waiting to get checked in. Finally as we settled Thrifty told my grandmother they released the hold on her credit card but unfortunately the hold was still on that afternoon as we were checking into our hotel. She called the bank and they said all Thrifty had to do was give them a call and the hold would be released immediately. We called Thrifty customer service who told us to call the branch in San Juan. The first woman my grandmother spoke to hung up on her. I called back and asked to speak to the manager, I was passed to a man named Andrew and explained the situation. He downright refused to call our bank. He told me there was nothing he could too and said it wasn't his fault the credit card didn't work!!! I've never had this problem when renting cars before.
