The market has revised their layout in the last couple of years to make room for more items. Pantry goods are arranged primarily by country - they carry South and Central American items in addition to Mexican. They recently expanded the fresh vegetable selection and added a small choice of fresh meat cuts. Store is cleaner than it used to be. Fresh pastries are now in a case near the front across from the cash register; you ask for a tray and tongs and can get your own choices by the piece. Caveat: I have seen a couple of flies perusing the pastries. That happens at other markets too though. I usually have one or two particular things on my list, and usually bring home several more interesting ingredients. The staff is often rushed, but is friendly and answers my questions. read more

Great store for Latin America food, plenty of options for Brazilian needs. The store doesn't look very clean, and you need to be careful about the grains, unfortunately I've found a bug once at the Brazilian corn flour (flokão/cuscuz). When I went to checkout, there was no one at the registers. After waiting 10 minutes and calling out to the guy cooking multiple times (who wasn't wearing a mask and initially ignored me), I eventually got his attention and he went and got the other employees. Also, when I eventually found the employees, the majority weren't wearing masks or social distancing. I won't be returning. read more

I usually go here to get nopales. There are plenty of authentic Mexican and Latin American products. On the other hand, Mexican food sold there still missing flavor for my taste. Custom service is average at the resister. But when it comes from other kitchen and groceries staff. They are very positive and proactive. read more

God, this place reminds me of Brooklyn. I'd like to offer a little disclaimer for this review. Namely, my 4 star rating might be a little high. Maybe it should be a three but, to be fair, I recognize my personal bias and will put it on the line (feel free to skip the next paragraph if you want to just get a straight review): There is nothing I hate more than how our country completely lacks independent businesses. It is alarming how much of what I see lining the streets is a chain. Be it a small chain like Johnny Carino's or a big chain like CVS, we don't seem to remember that not all that long ago you had more locally owned, family run, VARIED businesses. Now we want convenience. We want cheap. And so we have these cookie cutter places that dot every street in America. And that is NOT for me. I'd rather pay a little more and get the experience of shopping somewhere unique than save a few pennies and walk into a store that is the same no matter where it happened to land. Anyway... This is a small grocer with Mexican products. But it's more than that. It's the type of place you'd find in any of the borough of New York City - it has a cooler with soda (standard coke and pepsi products and some you've never seen before), a selection of candy that no other store has ever sold, phone cards, lotto tickets, spices you'll need to make grandma's flautas, prayer candles, and a hot food counter. Yay! We're talking true to form bodega, people. And while I can't imagine doing all of my grocery shopping here, I do love it for when I'm cooking up something Mexican because I know I can get exactly what the recipe calls for. Along with packaged products to buy, there are two hot cuisines you can buy: Mexican and Tunisian. I haven't tried the Tunisian yet but am looking forward to it. The Mexican is great - not anything like Taco Bell or some other cumin-filled fried stuff. You actually taste the flavor of the ingredients here. This is a fun place to experience, whether or not you're planning on cooking up a Mexican feast. Chances are, once you've walked around a bit you'll decide that a Mexican feast is exactly what's in order! read more

This place is revolutionizing food in Ann Arbor. It used to be you had to drive to Detroit to get a decent taco. I'll admit it, I've gotten in my girlfriend's car and driven 40 plus miles for a taco. I think it may be safe to say those days are over. Real talk: these are not the best tacos in Michigan. They are, however, the best tacos in Ann Arbor and are very very delicious. They use delicious authentic corn tortillas, liberally apply onions and cilantro, and give you a nice lime wedge. The meats are, for the most part, delicious. The chipotle chicken slays, and I don't even really like chicken. I really really really want to give this place five stars, but cannot because of one major flaw: the Al Pastor is not spit-cooked. The Al Pastor flavor is right on completely delicious, but the taco suffers from the meat's texture. I often get too fatty of bites, which is basically because the meat hasn't been roasting on a spit all day a la shawarma style meat. The moment they put in a spit I will add on the fifth star, and recommend the al pastor to all of my snobby taco friends. Until then, I will still be coming here four days a week for amazing tacos. read more

I am so happy to have found La Libertad! They have delicious hot meals - posole, tacos, other goodies to eat in or take out, and a great little grocery store as well. I had just posted a question on Yelp talk about where to find the Puerto Rican beverage Malta when it occurred to me to call Libertad, and of course they have it. Their grocery area is terrific, carrying several brands, at least, of just about any Mexican product you can imagine, even the soaps not usually found here. I promise to go back and do a better listing of items, but if you are looking for something hispanic, they very well may have it. read more

I love it when I come across tiny, authentic specialty groceries like this one. I had driven past this place on Liberty on my way home from work waaay too many times before I finally discovered it. Nothing like needing to pick up some tortillas to make for a party of hungry friends to make you look up at the "Tienda la Libertad" sign and wonder if, hey, maybe I don't have to go to Kroger and buy the crappy, dry, not-so-fresh tortillas. Growing up in southern California and Portland, Oregon and being nearly half Mexican, I can attest that this place and the items inside of it are the real deal. Spicy queso for all those wonderful Mexican dishes that are so much better with it (enchiladas, chile relleno), authentic spices you can't find anywhere else...and yes, fresh flour and corn tortillas! They carry yellow and white corn tortillas, and they come in fresh on Tuesdays after 3pm. Pick up a fresh pack of 40-50 tortillas for less than $3, and trust me, you will tell the difference! read more

HOORAY! Finally I've found a place in Ann Arbor that sells Tapatio and Valentina sauce! Yes! Yes! Yes! I just poked my head in to take a look around and see if they sold Tapatio (yes, I'm serious) and was happy to find so many Mexican and Latin American food products and spices that Ann Arbor's other grocery stores lack. This store is great! Anytime I want to make Mexican or Dominican food, I try to come here because they carry all the items I need and at good prices. This is definitely the best place to come to for Latin American, Caribbean, etc. food ingredients in Ann Arbor. Only downside is that the kitchen is currently undergoing a renovation so you can't come here for tacos, which are really REALLY good, at the moment. Don't know when it's reopening. read more

I like this place too, and they have some relatively obscure Mexican spices (epazote and chiles). They carry my favorite tortillas ever El Milagro which are much better than the other 'local' competition and are alway sfresh. They aslo have Queso Fresco at much better prices than any other stores in town as well as the Cotijo cheese and real Salvadoran sour cream (runnier than regular sour cream and better). It's easy to walk out with a great meal for under $10 but that's the credit limit. If they sold tacos and tamales at the counter instead of phone cards, I think they'd make a fortune! read more

La Tienda changed ownership recently (past 3 months). Under new ownership, the tacos are still delicious. Meaty & fresh. They now have vegetarian options which I am sooo thankful for. They continue serving traditional Mexican fare like tripe (cow stomach) and beef tongue for those wanting an adventure. Still for those of us wanting a quieter experience, there's carne asada, chorizo (sasuage), chipotle chicken, and braised pork... YUM. $1.50 tacos+ Mariachi music in the background. I come here quite oftern, actually, as it is the only place I know of that sells queso-fresca and queso-blanca, firm cheeses that lend themselves well to being fried or barbequed. The store: Convenient location within Ann Arbor. Offers a wide selection of essential Latin-American comestibles and household provisions. Produce is limited, but cheap, although not always fresh. Excellent prices for select domestic and imported beers. Also available: pinatas, flags, CD's, and phone-cards. The cafe: Tacos $1.50, standard corn tortilla, cilantro, lime, and onion with variety of options including: Al Pastor, Lengua, Pollo, Asada. Flavorful, filling, and authentic. A daily hot-bar is also available for $8.50. Menudo is also served in the colder months. The staff: Friendly, warm and amiable. Overall: As good as it gets in Ann Arbor for Latin-American groceries. Call in your order (mine is usually the cheese enchilada dinner) for carry out, arrive, shop for missing ingredients at home, and head back out into the world. Easy and conveniently off Liberty and Stadium. The parking lot, which it shares with numerous eateries (Pilar's, Faz) has seen its better days. Huge craters abound. Be careful. Delivery trucks for adjacent businesses add to the controlled confusion. Friendly people work inside and a super fast kitchen that opens at 11am does a brisk carry out. The only place for what I call "miracles," the tortilla brand Los Milagros, made in MI, come in three flavors: white corn, yellow corn and even as crispy tostadas. The aisles in the small store are labelled according to country: Mexico, Peru, Brasil etc. Just looking at the variety of spices, salsas and even votive candles can prove interesting while waiting for your carry out order. Latin American cleaning products (Fabuloso etc) also available. A very small produce area offers tropical and North American products. Fun place overall. Decent food, too! read more

Seems to be the only place in Ann Arbor where one can buy epazote, dried chilis, achiote, and a few other odds and ends necessary to make a proper Mexican meal. The exclusivity comes at a price which you'll quickly recognize if you frequently buy these same items elsewhere in the county. Fortunately, looking over the stock, I was pleased to see there was nothing "missing" from what any good Mexican grocer would normally carry, except perhaps a greater assortment of "fresh" chilies. This is not a very large place, so you aren't going to get a large selection, but there are some perks. Good produce which was surprising. I was very impressed with their dried goods - they have a very unique and affordable selection in the back against the wall. Most of what you are looking for, even if it isn't just Latin based goods you're needing. Prices reasonable. Good staff. Taco King is located here so you can grab some delicious food along with your groceries and they will ring it all up together. You don't have to do it separately. You can buy cds here from what I remember, which is cool. Awesome baked goods. You might miss this as it is tucked away in a corner but it's near Faz's Hello Pizza on Liberty. read more

Their food is delicious. However, their sucky customer service disgusts me. I work at a busy hospital, and I have a 30 minute lunch. I usually order about an hour and a half in advance of when I go to lunch. The first two times I ordered from them, they were about 15 minutes late, that's half my lunch. I was upset. Today, I ordered from them for the last time. Not only did they give our food (a few coworkers ordered with me) away to someone else, they blamed us for their mistake, and refused to take personal responsibility for their actions. The delivery driver lied and said that I had gotten my food, when she gave it to the wrong person. They offered no form of recourse, other than remaking our food and bringing it back. When they did, they got our order wrong. I ordered the Quesadilla special, and I only received the Quesadilla. I ordered two supreme fish tacos on flour tortillas with hot sauce. They sent Verde sauce, and put them on corn tortillas. When I called about the order mess up, I was threatened with a camera (whatever that means). They should've offered us some kind of discount, or at the least, they could've offered us free delivery. Needless to say, I will NEVER order from them again. Their customer service is HORRIBLE. No matter how delicious their food is, that doesn't make up for their crappy customer service! You've been warned!! read more
