This gym offers much more than Muay Thai, with programs for both adults and kids. More importantly, it's a family, not just a gym. Emilio is humble, relatable, and has a huge heart for fitness and for kids. I've seen firsthand how he goes above and beyond, hosting Parents' Night Out events and ensuring every child can participate, regardless of a family's financial situation. The only reason I no longer attend is because our schedules no longer aligned. If you're looking for a gym that truly cares about its members and community, this is it.

The owner was super nice on the phone and said I could stop by. When I got there, he was very welcoming and invited me to join the others upstairs that were training. Since I wanted to get a solo workout, he let me work out on the 1st floor (variety of bags & mat space). he put some music on and let me get my workout in. There were variety of folks here from fighters that were training for upcoming fights to people of all ages, men & women getting their training in. Everyone was super nice & welcoming. Next time I'm in town I'm definitely stopping by for a workout! Also, since I didn't bring any gear from home, they had everything available for purchase, gloves & wraps at very good prices and great quality. This gym is truly a gem. I travel across the country & have visited many gyms. This gym is definitely a special vibe. Thank you to all the coaches & athletes for welcoming me!

It had been years since I started any kind of physical activity and to be honest it terrified me to start again. I decided to bite the bullet and start training again. The trainers and students here are awesome. They are incredibly supportive and nobody has an ego. Everyone wants to help each other and it has been a blast getting back into shape. You can train at your own pace and everyone wants to see you succeed The trainers are very hands on and make sure that everyone understands the techniques being taught. They make training fun and are incredibly knowledgeable in their craft. The hour flies by. The facility is also great. A huge facility with plenty of mat space and they keep it clean. I have trained before in different facilities and this location is one of the best. Last but not least, the schedule of classes is great. I work very long hours and having classes in the evening makes it where I could train every day. The schedule is very accommodating. I would recommend this place for anyone whether your a beginner or an expert.

I searched through multiple listings and visited half a dozen locations comparing facilities, price, and schedule before ending up at Kong's in Lorton. Master Kim was super welcoming and the price point is better than anywhere else in the area. No restrictions on the number of days you can train.....after a ten year break, I was too ambitious and tried four days a week until my 40 year old knees said slow down a little ha ha. I've trained now at Kong's for over a year with it becoming a regular part of the family's weekly routine. The atmosphere is disciplined but supportive and encouraging. My oldest daughter started as a white belt a few months after I returned to training and that has been the best part of our experience here. She has earned her green belt and we take classes together as often as possible in the family time slot. My military commitment don't always allow for a lot of quality time with my kids so training with them at Kong's has been amazing. If your looking for a competitive place to train for yourself or to take classes with your kids, I highly recommend Kong's TaeKwonDo.

As instructors you are to ensure the safety of children that are in your care. You failed to do that as mentioned, I saw no activity from the instructors when my son was choking. This happened repeatedly and you should be ashamed of yourselves for calling yourself an instructor. At the start of class, your main concern was to get your liability form signed so you can negligently not take care of those who signed their rights over within your martial school. Animal control should be called for your aggressive dogs that you have open to the public. As you clearly said, "don't get too close" that enough tells you they're not safe to be around the public. The schedule you mentioned is only good for your school as you can maximize profits and not have to entertain different scheduling. So what if I pay the same price for my son attending your school half the time? Right? It's all about money first. My son was not safe and I would never ever not for 1 million years, bring my son back to your school. Your school should be closed to negligence. Parents please be aware and watch these instructors very carefully as I believe their actions speak for themselves. See if they are engaged or they hang out my the clock and focus on a countdown timer. As far as instructions, and from AI, from a child psychologist's view, young kids thrive on clear, consistent guidance but don't always need constant hand-holding. In martial arts, they might need frequent reminders early on to master steps or focus, especially if they're under ten. Structured repetition builds muscle memory, so gentle cues help without overwhelming them. As they grow confidence, ease up to encourage independence. I guess the instructors Ego's are more important than what's good for young children.

My son has been taking martial arts classes at this Dojo for over 6 years and he simply loves it there and looks forward to every class. It provides structure and stability that can be so helpful toward personal growth. I have no doubt that these classes have helped tremendously with my son's development, and I credit Potomac Kempo with helping him to develop a strong moral compass, greater self-discipline, strong conflict resolution skills, and a high degree of empathy and respect for others. I was a member for nearly two years with both of my children, and Sensei Gary is a good instructor but also very pushy constantly trying to upsell expensive equipment and special events at a substantial added cost. As long as you go along with it and keep shelling out more money, he is supportive of your training, but he does not like to take no for an answer. And be warned: if you ever decide to stop attending, he will charge you for an extra month after you've left as a penalty for leaving. Potomac Kempo's rates are already far higher than most other martial arts in the area, over $200 per month per person, and this school is clearly more interested in taking your money than in your personal well-being. Took my 5- and 8-year-old to Six Blades Jiu Jitsu Nova for a free trial. The environment is…read moreno-nonsense and clearly built around serious training-- which as an Army veteran is something I personally respect and felt at home in, especially given the military-style banter. That said, I didn't find the tone ideal for younger kids. There was language and phrasing ("kick his ass!") that I didn't feel was appropriate for children, and I was disappointed by comments made toward boys being beaten by girls ("You'll walk home if you lose to a girl")--not exactly the message I want either of my kids internalizing. The instructors are absolutely skilled and committed, but they treat the kids like mini adults, which may work for some families, but not ours. We ended up going with another gym that's more youth-focused, closer to home, and offers more affordable memberships with military and family discounts. I think Six Blades would be great for adult students or older teens looking for high-level instruction, but it just wasn't the right fit for our young kids. Edited for further context: For further context, what the owner describes as "jovial" banter included quotes from coaches during the kids' training session: * "Kick his ass!" * "Whoop his ass!" * "You better not lose to a girl!" * "If you lose to a girl, you're walking home!" * "Pay attention, dammit!" "Banter" implies the kids could respond with witty comebacks--but what would they realistically say to grown men in a position of authority? They simply complied. That said, I truly appreciate the owner's openness to constructive feedback. It makes me feel more confident in my decision as a parent. For now, we'll stick with the more "budget" and kid-friendly option -- at least until my children are old enough to clap back at demeaning and misogynistic comments with confidence and humor that comes with maturity.

My daughter has a few school friends who regularly attend the same classes as her, but I have noticed that she has also become friendly with other children which is especially nice to see in this COVID age. The thing I like most is the flexibility of the classes. I had assumed we would have to come a specific set of days every week, but you can choose which days work best for your child. This is especially helpful for those of us with other children or prior engagements, or simply to allow the child the independence to pick when they'd like to come. My daughter started in mid-March and she got her white belt in April. It is now early May and she's gotten two tips on her belt already. These achievements give my daughter a sense of pride and also motivation to keep doing her best! They also offer summer camp, after school care, and always have something special going on (like bring a friend week, mother's appreciation month right now, and father's month coming up in June). Overall I'm really grateful to have my daughter in this academy and look forward to the years to come.
