I was beyond disappointed, more like mortified, I ordered the "Seafood Gumbo". The food was atrocious the shrimp had a gamey taste and had bits of shells in the food, the side that came with it was a tasteless, bland white rice and a couple packs of saltine crackers. If you can get past the overbearing scent of dirty ashtrays and stale cigarette smoke, rampant political cultism and outdated furniture and presidents, this place serves a fairly decent burger. Service was spotty, we waited 10 minutes at the door before our presence was acknowledged and then we were rather unceremoniously directed to find the table at the back of the restaurant near the bar where we were joined by our former president looking particularly stiff and unbalanced. Not particular attention was paid to who was seated first as we watched two other later arriving parties orders get taken first. Eat here pretty often to-go. Their food is decent but the portions aren't always consistent. Their hamburgers are good but they skimp on the fries. Came to visit and saw that the reviews were low so my expectations were not high already. Took 15 mins to get any drinks, and then 45 mins to get a food ORDERED, not even out. AVOID! We ate here because the wait at the other restaurants in town were an hour or more. Nothing good about this place other than the big screens playing the Astros game. The elderly lady working told us to wait for a table but others who came in said you just seat yourself. Everyone ended up waiting even though there were a bunch of empty tables. We were told they were short staffed but locals told us they are always short staffed. We waited 15 minutes for water and when the food came it was not very good. They were completely unaware of who they sat first and three groups were served before us yet seated after us. Oh well...at least we know where not to go when we come back to Crystal Beach. The locals we met said the workers get very grouchy, especially the waitress. A group of 7 teens waited patiently to be seated and the same elderly lady told them she couldn't seat them and then ignored them and moved on to another group. They were stunned and quietly left the restaurant. The young girl bussing the tables was also not allowed to get menus for us...weird. My boyfriend, his parent and I came because all the popular spots were packed and had long wait times. We came here due to it being less packed (three cars in parking lot). We had a great server so no complaints there. We had ordered drinks and they honestly all sucked. I got a sweet tea and wasn't sweet and tasted old, boyfriend ordered water and it tasted straight from tap, bf mom got a coke and she said it tasted weird and watered down, and bf dad got a unsweetened tea and had no complaints. We got our food order in and it looked good until you eat it and it lacks seasoning/flavor. Bf got steak finger basket and it was tough to bite into and I ordered the chicken tenders and the batter was unseasoned and some tenders were too salty, the only thing saving those baskets was the gravy. Bf mom asked for medium and got medium well on her ribeye and bf dad got a chicken and sausage gumbo and has no complaints. Our appetizer was the cheese sticks and honestly I've had better and the cheese was odd. Now the WORST part was my bf mom going to get her salad from salad bar and it had limited options and GNATS all over the veggies. Lol), anyway I went to Crystal Beach and while I was boot scooten around I went to Tiki Bar&Grill for some lunch and to visit my buddy who tends bar there. I got the Philly Cheesesteak with sweet potato fries. It was amazing and even came with some aju sauce to dip the sandwich in. The service was amazing, my friend did a great job, of course. Only thing that bugged me was one of the waitresses was wearing a Trump hoodie. While I won't get into my personal political beliefs here; I will say that regardless of how casual the atmosphere may be in the restaurant and/or the community, wait staff are most times the 1st person one encounters when you come inside the restaurant. With that in mind, a restaurant which deals with the public ALL the time, is not the place for the staff to express or show off their political views. People come to restaurants and food trucks to enjoy the food and the atmosphere, not have the staff's political views flung in their face. Anyways, if you are ever in the area, do stop by and enjoy a good meal with a couple of drinks! I disregarded the "Karen" reviews that were triggerd because there are Trump signs there. So on Spring Break we decided to hit the restaraunt for lunch and we were not disappointed. Immediatly we were greeted witha smile and were seated. We ordered the Chicken Tenders with gravy which was a huge portion and very very good, this coming from my college student who is a chicken tenders expert....we also got a kids Cheeseburger, Grilled Chicken Sandwich and I ordered the Fried Catfish with baked potato (they have a salad bar in which can load up your potato yourself. I would recommend all of it. All in all It was a great lunch for 4 for under $65 including tip. When visiting the area, I would definetly eat there again. Here on a Sunday at 1105am, yeaye, they're open. This our 3rd attempt at food today, so believe me, this just being open is a plus. The server is friendly and the food smells good. I shouldn't have to be so excited about this, but I am. Prices are crazy here, and there's signs everywhere that says "due to food cost, all items are $2.00 more. Ridiculous, but we're here. I'm not happy with an $11. Burger served with chips, but again, we're here. There's a small salad bar, that's cool. I'm really having a problem wrapping my head around the smoking here in bolivar. I like the tiki bar, I like the food, but the allowing of smoking in a restaurant is just so frustrating to me. I understand ...the local customers are the ones that they cater to, especially the ones they know by name, which is most. Local businesses make it obvious who they are going to assist and who is going to get the barest of service, and the locals here do seem to take precedence over tourists or even frequent visitors like us. We've been coming to Bolivar peninsula a couple of times a month for a year and a half and have been very loyal to the local businesses despite prices despite obvious prejudice against tourists, but we're trying. The tiki bar has really good food and depending on who is taking care of you good service. But I just cannot get past the smoking and the obvious bending of rules about no smoking in the dining room. If you're not going to enforce posted rules then why post them at all. They enforced the $2.00 upcharge, so why not the no smoking in the dining room. I'm really hoping as we continue to frequent the local businesses people recognize us as familiar faces and treat us different. I try to always give good reviews, but sometimes have to chose between that and honesty. I'll start out with the positives - our server was great. She was attentive and though busy, didn't make us feel rushed or imposing. Tables and silverware were clean and bussers were quick. The food was overpriced, under portioned, and bland. 3 out of six plates were lukewarm and one was cold. My advice to the managers/owners - if you want to serve small portions you have to make your food exceptional. If you want to serve mediocre food you need to give big portions.
