The Rum shack is part of The Spot. This is a 21+ exclusive area so if your in Galveston and see a long line at the Spot, rest assure thats for the 21 and under area. There are 3 or 4 other bars that make up this place. We like coming to Rum Shack because its the best place to see the ocean and get a nice breeze going through. They also have a small little fire pit going on in the bar which is nice as that Sea Breeze can be quite chilly. Drinks are about average for the area about $11. I had the Mojito this time around because those large fish bowl drinks usually will lay me out. I rated this a 4 because I ordered the Shrimp Po boy and wanted Mayo instead of the spicy sauce but got a plain po boy. I'm not one to argue and figured on a Saturday that the waiter was already going through it and it wasn't even night time yet. The downside of this place is that parking will raise your blood pressure and you will actually need a drink after dealing with finding parking. Don't even bother parking next to the restaurant, your better off going to that parking garage thats so narrow your anxiety kicks in as the soccer mom in her giant suburban flies out of the parking spot on the ramp and then proceeds to have a hard time getting by you without almost hitting you. At least the parking is validated.... I usually try to hit it up a few times a year and hope to be back after tourist season. read more

Coming in the experience was off to a bad start, we're greeted by Ozzy and we ask for a table for 6. We're immediately told we can't be accommodated but one of the other venues can, at this time there was 3 tables with 6+ people on them and were told it can't be done because policy. When pressed for a reason he insisted it's policy. We ask if we can put a table together and we're told "no" again but not told the reason. We all decided to sit at the bar when one of the customers came and told us they were leaving and we could grab their table and add it to ours, so we did so. Ozzy comes around and takes our orders, when he comes to me he asks what I want and I ask for a rum punch. At no time was I told that I was cut off before this, but with the biggest smile on his face Ozzy says, " you can't have that, you're being aggressive. Do you want a glass of water or should I get a manager?" I said, "nah, that's fine I don't want you to spit in it" but my wife asked for a manager Tyler came and explained that they "can't have tables moved because they can cause a fire hazard and people in the corner can't get out" and I wasn't being served because I was " being aggressive and it could mean I was previously intoxicated" despite having to go through a bouncer and being carded. The 6 top next to us was leaving at this point And we asked Tyler, tthey we're all sitting here in the corner, can we do the same? We were told it was still a hazardous but he'd let us. And my wife asked if I could order a drink, to which she was told, " he seems to not be intoxicated, so it will be ok" I refused to be served anything after that, my family orderd some food and drinks and they seemed to enjoy it. But for me the night was spoiled. The bartender had to serve us because Ozzy was feeling "concerned" but she spentost of her free time texting and not really serving us. Before we left we saw Ozzy sit another 5 top. When my aunt asked him he said "yup, and they hit the magic number! And they" pointing to another table "are also 5 because they hit the magic number" Before I left I spoke to RJ who was very accommodating and told him all of this. We went to the Rum Shack Saturday evening to see a friend who started working there. We got there before his shift started and witnessed probably the worst service in the restaurant/bar industry the we have ever seen. The bar wasn't slammed busy, although there were a good amount of people there. We waited a few minutes to take our drink order. What we witnessed came afterwards. We saw three different tables sit with two people per table. The first table for about 30 minutes without being acknowledged. The second two tables also sat for an extended period. We watched this and more importantly, we watched the staff seeing that they were there and seemingly had a back and forth as to which one of them would greet the three tables. It wasn't just servers and bar tenders as it appeared managers were in the mix of people ignoring the tables. There was even a table that had been there before our arrival. Finally one of the customers got up and asked a server for attention. It was jaw dropping how the lack of concern every employee had. read more

Found a shard of sharp glass the size of a dime in my fish tacos. Our server spent 10-15 minutes on a slow Monday (07/29) trying to find the manager to remedy the situation. The only reason I am not leaving 1 star review is because the food was good, and our server was really nice and professional. My girlfriend ordered the chicken nachos and I ordered the fish tacos. After taking my first bite I noticed something very hard and sharp in my mouth, only to discover a large shard of glass. I was very lucky to have not cut anything in my mouth or to have not swallowed it. Not sure why there was even any glass in the kitchen. After serving 10 years in restaurants, I know kitchen prep should only have metal or plastic containers for that reason. Pretty careless on prep or kitchen side to have not deep cleaned or tossed any containers that could have been compromised by a glass-breaking accident. That could have been fatal if I swallowed it. I count this as a blessing, and the restaurant should too that nothing worse happened. I think back of the house staff could take this as an opportunity to properly retrain staff and probably not stock any glass in the kitchen and prep areas. To be honest, I would have wanted to go back, but this incident would shake up anyone. read more

The wait staff and management are excellent, professional and very attentive. The ambience is perfect. However, I may personally not go back because my two favorite menu items are no longer available, the frozen Mojito and the fish and shrimp combo. Also the food and drink portions have become quite smaller. I guess that is happening most places though. Also, from what I recall, most of the tropical drinks used to be served in a jumbo mug. Now they are served in more of a smaller cylinder mug. In any case this review is not to deter anyone from going. The food still tastes decent and the ambience and service are great. read more

This place is absolutely delicious , they also have great customer service! There's plenty of free parking! It's an ocean view restaurant and bar, there's actually 2 adult bars , and the kid friendly bar with Restaurant. It's pretty neat because once you enter it they see you with kids they guide you to the correct place. Once you enter the restaurant part of it you take a few steps, you look at the menu and make like to order after you order you find a chair and we were able to get an ocean view seat. We went on a Tuesday evening around 6pm and it was packed but not overwhelming. There's plenty of seating and a lot of staff working. They have a huge drink selection they look awesome! They also have delicious shakes for kids and adults my kids had the Nutella and Oreo shakes and you can upgrade to the kids menu for $2.99 more. We also ordered a sampler it literally had wings, onion rings , fried pickles, mozzarella sticks andbacon wrapped fried shrimp ! It was amazing ! Shrimp cocktail was also sooo good. And the sweet and spicy burger was unbelievably delicious ! Literally mouthwatering perfection it had bacon bits and fried jalapeños with cheese ! So good and huge! Overall, clean crowded place. Been here many times so I somewhat already knew what to expect. But this time was different. First of all the food was pretty good. Had the blackened snapper, which was good. My only complaint on the food was that the hush puppies didn't have any flavor and was just big spongy ball of cornmeal. Other than that, the rest was delicious. My biggest complaint was the service. First it took forever to get our server to take our order. We came later in the day so the big crowd was pretty much gone. The only REAL service was the bus boy who came around quite a bit just to ask if we were okay or needed him to take anything off the table. The server came around once after taking our order then one other time before I asked for the check. I was more impressed by the bus boy because he had a visible disability and was noticeably busting his ass making sure empty cups, bottles or plates were cleared. I was so impressed that I made sure to give him a 20 dollar tip for wasting no time in taking my plate when I was done. I watched the servers chatting amongst themselves and other customers. Cheap frozen mojito was OK, but I went back to my standard (Tito's rocks) after the first one. I still rate this place as inexpensive for a bar because I think my vodka was only $8. I had been waiting all week for their bacon wrapped shrimp and unfortunately this time around it wasn't very tasty! The 1st time, WOW my taste buds went insane, hence the reason I was pumped for them, but it might have just been an off day!? Sad...... but it happens. When your urinals are shaped like giant succulent red lips of succulence, then you know that you're winning in life. (Sorry, no pictures available.) The Rum Shack tries to be a nightclub, a tourist destination, and a local dive bar -- and actually succeeds more often than it doesn't. With a fantastic assortment of rums to choose from, as well as great cocktails and even better frozen mojitos, along with an attentive waitstaff and bartenders who don't skimp on the alcohol, the Rum Shack is one of those bustling places that makes you want to get there early, and then stay for an extra drink. First of all, the frozen mojitos are fantastic. If you're there to sample, then move in order of sweetness. So start with the classic frozen mojito, move on to the passion fruit, and then finish off with the mango. A 12oz costs the same as a 20oz by volume, so there is an incentive to order more of the 12oz concoctions. However, the star of the show might be the rum punch, which packs in enough fruit juices to hide that shot of Bacardi 151 mixed in with the Bacardi Rock Coconut and Myers. The one negative I would say is that there is an inefficient system for food delivery, which can be both slow and haphazard, in contrast to the excellence alcohol delivery system in place. You wouldn't think that asking for chips and salsa would be an ordeal, but it sure turned into one. The frozen mojitos on the other hand came instantly, and so the spotty food service is really not enough to detract from the overall very positive experience. In the end, with a great beachfront view, great prices, and a great drink selection, the Rum Shack is an extremely welcome addition to the paucity of scenic hangout places for a mundane Houston population hungry for scenery. It's a wonder Galveston took so long for it to pop up! read more

Cute bar right beside the beach on top of several other bars within the building, it's a small place that has the Caribbean feel and serving awesome Mojitos, we were able to grab a seat facing the beach, they have a lot of cocktails and told they were famous for their Mojitos which isn't s lie, the mango mojito was so refreshing and just about right with the alcohol content....perfect day for a hot Labor Day weekend, the Mai tai was good as well, chicken nachos were huge but sadly there wasn't enough salsa and to get extra it was $1, I will definitely come back to this place especially on Sunday when they have $4 Frozen Mojitos read more

They have all the crowd pleasers, as well as more obscure rum I've never even heard of. The food here is subpar, so if you aren't drinking, you're kind of SOL. This was one of my favorite bars to just chill in Galveston! It is on the second floor of The Spot complex. It is open air, has a thatch roof, and has big, comfy chairs to lounge on. There is always a breeze rolling through as the sounds of reggae music fill the air. My fiancé and I actually came back here a second time during our visit to Galveston because we liked it so much. I went here when I was on vacation and all it was a good time. There is cool seating like swings, and interesting chairs. In each seating area they have awesome bar games you can play like Jenna, swing the ring, and did I mention there is a jukebox. The waitresses are nice and I was able to get my drink fairly fast. I don't have any complaints about the drinks and the place is comfortable enough to chill there for a few hours. Oh and the food was pretty good too. I went to graduate school in the Caribbean, so if there is a place called Rum Shack that is beach adjacent, I'm there. So this place was a must-see on our Galveston trip once we heard about it. The cloudy/gloomy weather kind of ruined the beachy part of things, but you definitely feel like you're in a beach side shack with the decor. They also have an indoor fire pit which was nice with the cold weather. Frozen mojitos were reasonably priced for happy hour, and our server was attentive, repeatedly asking us when we were running low if refills were needed. Nice little spot. read more
