I remember back when the Tiki was a cool place to hang out and listen to a mostly decent DJ's setlist and dance with affordable drinks. Those days are long since past. This place isn't even retro hip anymore, it's just plain gross. Thank goodness it's so dark inside, you almost can't see how badly it needs a facelift. Mid Century is in and somehow this period original building is still a dim and dank den where most of the original charm has been pulled out. I love this place, but it needs some TLC. We were here celebrating a friends birthday. It's a gay bar. Although I'm straight, birthday girl isn't, so here we are lol. The drinks here are SUPER expensive. I mean good lord, I know you have to make a living and stay operational but when your top shelf vodka is Tito's for $10 we have a problem. Anywhere else that's like $4.50 and nowhere near top shelf. They don't even have Ketel One which anywhere else is like $5.50. What in the world?? I mean is Tito's really your high end top shelf? Wow! The bar tenders, all of them, are rude. We were here on Friday January 10th from like 9-11pm. There was 1 guy and 2 girls. No customer service skills at all. My girlfriends and I stopped in for a girls night on a Monday. The bar is decorated beautifully and it seems like a great place to drink and dance. However our experience was not great. We came in and sat at the bar. The bartender took my card to start a tab, made us our first round (four kamikazes) and the second we finished our shots she told us we needed to pay and get out. I ended up closing out on my card and we all left. It wasn't like we were there late or were intoxicated. So the reason for this bartenders behavior was beyond me. Not sure what was going on but I won't be going there for girls night again any time soon. read more

I always come to this bar when I'm in town. Always really great music and I tend to run into someone I know. Modesto isn't so big! The drinks are a great price, the bartenders are always very friendly and helpful and know how to handle a large crowd. Sometimes the crowd is a little ghetto, but I wouldn't place the fault on Tiki. they're doing a good job of keeping the Tiki fun alive at this old joint. this part of Modesto is sketchy, so it can seems a bit daunting with the door security with metal detector wand, but it's all good vibes, even from the security gal. inside there was laughter and good music, a pretty lively scene for after midnight on a sunday night, but not too obnoxious to relax with a Mai Tai. as a traveler just passing through after a long solo drive, it was nice to find a bunch of happy people having fun. the drinks are pretty good - the Mai Tai could be a bit stronger, but it did come in a pint glass - which was welcome because i was thirsty! the Jungle Bird was tasty and strong - recommended! read more

Be careful going to this bar. They give the name Tiki a really bad reputation since every Tiki has an outstanding reputation except this one. Do not tip the bartenders because they are corrupted. So this Halloween I came to the front door where they check Ids and literally was one of the first to get my id checked and I was with a group of my friends all starting off our night great until the bouncer at the front (Looks Mexican, not to tall and rude as can be) starts to check my id and looking at it funny, then puts it in the lights and ask the other security guards if it looks fake and no matter what they say he decides it is. And I was shocked and didn't understand how that can be! It had everything he said it didn't and didn't even wanna give it back to me. Man, I was furious because I needed my Id, so I called the police and they arrived around 30 minutes later thank god because it was HALLOWEEN. And they ran it and confirmed it was real but this "Bouncer" insisted it was fake to a POLICE OFFICER and wanted to still keep it. At least they police gave it back to me but the bouncer didn't let me in when my friends and I were there the night before and he checked my id!!! And he said I was banned from there? How am I banned if I did nothing wrong? I been here many many times and now im banned?! Horrible BOUNCER not the first complaint about him either they need to retrain him on how to check ids when kids under 21 get in with them anyways. P.s: One of the other bouncers( He's a white fella with a beard) came up to me while I was waiting for the police and apologized because he has seen me there many times and waited with me. Although it's a rather small place, its unbelievably quaint and cozy and the fire-pit adds such great ambiance as well as character to it.. The music was bumpin and the drinks are really affordable and as stated by others, nice and strong.. Is there even a thing as "too strong" as far as an adult beverage goes??? NEVER!!! lol.. Although I'm straight, I prefer to club in gay establishments because the people there are so friendly and open and the Tiki didn't disappoint.. So I go to any place anywhere that I can find that says "Tiki" on it. Mostly because I love the vintage 1960s tiki subculture. I love the mai tais, tiki mugs, bamboo, Witco fountains, bongos, hula girls, Don Ho, all that stuff. We were in Modesto for a film festival and passed the Tiki Cocktail Lounge, so I made our group stop for a quick mai tai. I've been to a lot of tiki joints over the years. And I've been to a handful of gay clubs. But I've never been to a gay tiki joint. This place was definitely that. Inside it was pretty dim. It wasn't terribly packed, but the crowd that was there was pretty rowdy. They were also very friendly. It was loud, and the music at that particular moment was like a club-house type of thing. We all ordered mai tais. And I'm pretty sure it was all rum with a splash of pineapple juice on top. I love my booze, I think it was probably the only time I wasn't able to finish my drink. This is an alright place. Went in for a drink on a Thursday night and it was packed for a bachelorette party. Wasn't overly crowded but took awhile to get my drink. Seems like they were friends of the bartenders and some regulars. Both bartenders made eye contact with me but seemed to be busier helping their friends. I waited about 10-15 minutes and had to move a few times to be noticed before I was asked what I wanted to drink. Music was a bit too loud where you couldn't even hear the person next to you. We arrived in Modesto from Dallas late- 8 pm. This bar sits surrounded by a motel (Tiki Motel). We thought about staying at the motel, then walking over to bar- lol- my husband goes to the motel window, presents his Texas ID, and the motel manager says, "you don't wanna stay here or any motel on McHenry. There's lots of drugs, we do family relocation, and the police are here all the time." He suggested places out on Hwy 99- which we did find! Thank you! After in our hotel we went back to the bar. We had been traveling all day and needed a few drinks before calling it a night. We parked out back. Parking is tiny. Based upon our prior research- this is the "best gay bar" in Modesto. It looked kinda "dive bar"- but we do "dive bar well" First in you are "hard carded" for ID- then metal detector run over you. That's wild! Only in REALLY BAD dive bars have we ever seen this. We took a seat at the bar. The chairs/stools are something right outta "Pier one imports" - the padding's on the bar edges terribly worn out. The seating in back is red and worn- inside is TINY! This place is small! We had a few drinks and crowd began to pickup. Most seemed like your typical "Jr college rural" crowd. The bar is definitely "dive bar quality". If this is "the best in Modesto"- I'm terrified at what the other looks like. There were some local street "urchins" from the tiki hotel wandering around- so I guess the metal detector makes sense.
