Might be the worst restaurant meals I've ever had. We asked for a recommendation from the hotel we were staying at and without recommendation the hotel manager said Timber Charlies. I order the baby back ribs with a baked potato and onion rings. The onion rings were the only thing eatable, every else was overcooked and dry. The BQ sauce had a horrible aftertaste. The wait was INCREDIBLY long; over an hour. Covid-+9 guidelines have them at 50% capacity. Every employee wore gloves and masks. When we were finally seated, 2 waitresses completely ignores us and focused on tables that were seated AFTER us. I finally grabbed a waitress and we were served. Angie was great. TC's is a bit more of a bar than a restaurant but is very family friendly nevertheless. Food is pretty much what you'd expect- bar food. They added a page of European foods (German etc) to the menu but its not very veg friendly. The pasty is a bit too dry, even for a pasty. They also offer a 5 lb. ox burger for any one who wants to have an upset stomach in the middle of nowhere U.P. Service is kinda slow but not too bad. Price is fine. Terrible from the start. I, along with my husband, mother-in-law, and two other women, met my father-in-law and his friend (so a party of 7) for dinner on a Saturday night in October. My father-in-law and his friend had been seated at the bar and put our name in for a table as they saw the restaurant becoming busy. We were the second party out of three pages of parties waiting to be seated. Our party was passed over and did not get seated until after all three pages of parties had already been seated- we waited for a table for over an hour. When asked why we had not yet been seated, the hostess indicated that they did not have any available tables large enough to accommodate us. When we noticed two open tables that could be pushed together to accommodate us, the hostess sat two parties of four or less at them. Who we presumed to be the "lead" waitress informed us that they cannot push two smaller tables together to accommodate us- we could only be seated at a single table large enough for our party. Meaning, had the larger parties not left, we could have been waiting all night for a table. Once we were finally seated, we placed drink orders. After receiving our drinks, our server took our food orders. My husband and I both ordered the French onion soup to come out before our meals. The soup took approximately 45 minutes to arrive. The soup was lukewarm, consisted of huge chunks of under-cooked onion (inedible without being cut first), croutons, and a barely melted square of cheese. Definitely the worst French onion soup I have ever had. The reviewers saying it was "divine" or the best they've ever had must have never had good French onion. The salads that we received next were actually really good- field greens mixed with lettuce- though the cherry tomatoes were a little soft and overripe. The ranch dressing tasted house made. My entree came out first. Then my husband's. Then my father-in-law's. Each entree came out one-by-one. My husband and I were finished with our entree's before my mother-in-law even received hers. Had we waited for all seven members of our party to receive their food before we began eating, our food would have been cold. My steak tips entree was blah. I ordered the tips medium-rare, but they came out medium-well to well done. No seasoning whatsoever on the steak; it was flavorless. With my steak tips came sauteed onions and mushrooms, but the mushrooms were still raw and the onions could have also been cooked longer. My husband's steak (Wagyu), which he ordered medium-rare, was cooked perfectly on one half, and was rare on the half. The mashed potatoes were terrible, worst than the worst box-mix potatoes I've ever had. I'm not sure if it was the gravy or the potatoes themselves, but they were bad. One of the ladies in my party ordered some sort of sandwich that was supposed to come with bacon and guacamole on it. She received a sandwich with two slices of bacon and what looked to be a teaspoon of guacamole smeared on. However, she did say the bread was delicious. My mother-in-law's macaroni and cheese came out cold. By the time we all received our food, we had been at the restaurant for two hours- one hour waiting for a table and one hour+ waiting to receive our food. The service from our waitress was slow. By the time we were finally seated, it appeared she was only waiting on our table and two others (4 top or less). When one person was out of their drink, they had to ask her for another, and she would not ask the rest of the table if they needed more to drink- so we had to order drinks one-by-one. After receiving our checks, we asked to talk to a manager. There wasn't one available. What kind of manager is not at their restaurant on a Saturday night? We spoke with the "lead" waitress again about our poor service and terrible food. She apologized profusely and agreed to take the equivalent of 25% off of our bills. My in-laws and their friends have been eating at Timber Charlies at least once a year for 25 years as they both own cabins in Newberry. Needless to say, we will not be back. read more

I had the fish basket - 3 very large pieces , with fries and my friend had a Mushroom, Swiss, Bacon burger - with a lot more on it and onion rings. Spent the night in Newberry while visiting the UP. The restaurant was recommended by the owner of the motel we were staying in and it was only about a 15 walk from our room. I had my heart set in fried perch and was a bit disappointed when the waitress (who was the owner's daughter) informed me the were out of perch but had a bluegill substitute it had been years since I had enjoined the tasty panfish. Turned out, I was the real winner as the bluegill was lightly fried and had a clean and delicate taste. The sides of Mac 'n cheese and cole slaw were both excellent. This local gem is highly-rated, and for good reason. We stopped in for dinner while on our tour of the UP. No pretense here, and the food is delicious. The place was packed and the hostess said we might have to wait a little longer than normal due to the rush. The servers were working their butts off and ours was over to our table in about 3 mins, apologizing. I wish service where I live was this nice! I had the fish platter and my wife had the pastie. Both were delicious. Best of all, 6 out of 8 of the taps were craft beer, and Michigan craft beer at that. Bell's, Keweenaw, New Belgium, and one I didn't recognize. I was shocked, but considering there's---what, 100 breweries?---in Michigan, I shouldn't be surprised. Michiganders know good beer. Our meal came to $40! The value and quality here is great. My wife and I took a quick vacation to the UP, and found Timber Charlie's on TA after a long drive up from Lansing. Long story short, we ended up eating dinner there twice and breakfast once. I ordered steak twice and both times it was prepared perfectly. Thick, juicy and well seasoned without being overwhelming. My wife ordered a chicken salad one night and the pot roast the second. Again, everything was flavorful and well-prepared. I also enjoyed their nice beer selection. We had breakfast one morning, and the omelette were very good. The menu is basic, but has the typical eggs and bacon offerings. I love that this place is unfussy, but has such good food. I told our server that I'd love to transplant the restaurant to Lansing. It's the kind of place you can go to, get a beer and a basket of fries, or sit down to a delicious meal that can go up against any other restaurant. The next time we're in Newberry, Timber Charlie's will be our choice for dinner. read more

It was nothing but fat and no way near medium, no seasonings, it had to be sent back. The butter wouldn't even melt on my baked potato. The waitress was upset about her tip and had the audacity to go off on my family and ask what kind of tip was that. The kids menu - which establishments never seem to publish - consisted of: hot dog & fries; chicken tenders & fries; grilled cheese & fries; and mac & cheese with garlic bread. My 5-year-old daughter got the hot dog and it was huge. My 8-year-old son (who has a big appetite) enjoyed his mac & cheese but didn't finish it because the portion was large. My family and I went for lunch. It took approx. an hour (54 minutes per the waitress) for us to get our food. One meat entree was still partially frozen and partially cooked. The waitress and cook (owner?) were very rude. I have never been treated with such horrible service nor seen anyone treated so horribly. They made it seem like my family and I were inconveniencing them. We still ended up paying full price for the food. My family was so upset that nobody could eat their food after how we were treated. Fish and chips for my hubby, and a pastie, gravy and coleslaw for me. We were both all set to dig in when our plates were set in front of us. A cute mini, metal fry basket full of fries came with the fish, but the small pieces of fish were greasy mush. My pastie was tasty, until I started to bite into pieces of gristle.
