We were traveling on I-40 heading to Asheville and someone said we had to try this place for lunch. We had a large group with us so we decided to try it and so glad we did! I ordered the Philly Steak Sandwich (Thin sliced steak grilled with onions, peppers and white American cheese. Served on a toasted hogie roll with a pickle spear). My sandwich was very good and definitely recommend this sandwich!!! It had great flavor! My wife ordered the Ruben (Tasty corn beef on Rye bread with swiss cheese and sauerkraut and our special sauce. Served grilled with a pickle). My said her sandwich was very good! We have driven past this place a lot as it is just off of the freeway. We finally gave it a try. It was busy, but there were still a lot of seats available. The interior was not fancy. Just a country restaurant. The food was basic, but very good. We were a party of four, and each had pretty much something different. There were no complaints about any of the dishes. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted great. Portion sizes were appropriate. The staff were great and we were tended to constantly. My friend and I went there last Friday for a meal and found that the place was great. We ordered salt and pepper catfish with baked potato, coleslaw, and some rolls on the side. Both of us devoured the meal because it was so tasty and delicious. The catfish was prepared wonderfully, the baked potato was perfect and they even made a special sour cream sauce to go on it. The coleslaw was as well very good. The service was great and it was so good that the next day while we were traveling to Lenore, we stopped in to have another meal there before we went onto our concert. This time I had a BLT, which was loaded with bacon and was delicious. Their onion rings I had on the side were delicious as well. My partner decided to order the salt and pepper catfish again and enjoyed it again for the second time. Anytime I'm in the Morganton area, I will certainly want to go there to have a bite to eat. Not sure what some of these reviewers are talking about with low scores. This place is excellent and a true hidden gem. Maybe they're getting something irregular, but I've enjoyed their BBQ the most, but also enjoyed their sandwiches like the Reuben and the chicken parm. I'll add a pic of the BBQ on a return visit, and as someone that has done 19/20 of the NC Historic BBQ trail spots, this one can hang at least with their BBQ. I went with my friend to Timberwoods for supper. Over priced for not so great food. For seniors on a budget was too expensive. Their salads were nothing to brag about and they were priced more or the same as an upscale restaurant like Longhorn Steakhouse. Very disappointed. Not going to return. She said she would have to see. She left and never came back. We discussed leaving and going somewhere else but a very nice waitress heard us talking and told us they were definitely serving lunch. I wish I could give a minus 10 for a review. My fish and fries were not cooked all the way. I sent them back and tried the country fried steak..which was burnt around the edges. The gravy was so thick it was hard to swallow along with the mashed potatoes which where not completely mashed or cooked. My husband got the prime rib. There was nothing prime about it. And he noticed the skin on the baked potato wasn't washed all the way. The cats wouldn't even eat what he brought home. Hubby is now sick on his stomach as am I. It seems like the regulars like it but then if you grow up going somewhere and the food slowly gets worse..you get use to it I guess. But if you want to save your stomachs I would recommend avoiding this place. I really got sick going into the bathroom. The food was ok for this type of restaurant. However one of the waitstaff made very sure that I knew that I was not welcome. She went out of her way to "mean mug" me. There was only 6 customers in the restaurant. She was not my waiter but she brought me my receipt and forcefully placed it on the table opposite me, glared at me and walked away without saying anything. This small place next to the Rainbow Inn just off I-40. A restaurant has been here since the '50's, and has been under new ownership since 2001. They are open for all three meals, and usually are pretty busy. They do BBQ here, Lexington style - it is moist, tender, no smokiness, with some nice brown bits in the chop. The sauce is typical Lexington, more sweetness than most of this style, and no heat. They offer both kinds of slaw, and I like both of these. The hush puppies here are special, light & crunchy, with no sweetness. The star at this place though is the fabulous Fried Chicken, it is worth the trip up here. They only serve the breast - wow, I wish they would offer dark meat as well. It is fried crispy with a light coating, a little greasy, as it should be, and moist and tender - this is killer fried chicken, southern style.The veggies are also very nice - cabbage, fried okra, turnip greens, & excellent fried squash. They also serve a good tasting Country Style Steak, but it is a little on the tough side. The menu contains the usual suspects on the sandwich side, but the Hot Dog here is not one I'd order again - the chili is on the sweet side. read more

Really ?? Apparently, the people that left good reviews are used to eating unpalatable food. We stopped in after looking at the reviews here. 4/16/2022, We had a problem finding the restaurant, as there is no signage at the entry that you can see until you pull into the parking lot. The place on the outside looked like an old DMV or an old clinic. The outside does not have a restaurant appeal. We had already came from a distance and thought we would give it a try. OK, thats no problem. So, we get inside, the waitresses were all poking about, not in to much of a hurry. We wanted some flounder and shrimp. They just had seperate orders, no seafood plate combos. The fish was really thin and smelled really fishy not like fresh flounder normally smells. It was also, over cooked and you could not cut it with your fork; you had to use your knife. The hush puppies where burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. The french fries were the frozen kind like most places, BUT!! They tasted just like an open box in a freezer with other open products. The taste was bad. The wife had a baked patato. The baked potato comes out in foil. When she cut into it, you could tell it had been reheated a few times. It had a brownish color inside, not what you find in a baked patato. She could not eat it. The shrimp was "ok; and the fried okra was "ok". The bill was like 34 bucks. We couldn't eat half of what was there, because of how bad it was. They should have paid us to eat there, and here comes the really bad part. Have you ever felt so bloated that you thought you would explode??? Well, let me tell you; a lot of restaurants will put baking soda in the tea or in other stuff they serve, to make you feel full and to make you feel like you got more for your money. It makes you feel like "wow" that place really fills you up?? In reality you have not eaten much at all. I was so miserable for about 4 hours after eating there, "bloated". I always look forward to coming here when I arrive back home to visit family. It doesn't look like much but it has the best home cooking and friendly faces! I love breakfast, usually stick with livermush (since you cannot get it many places) but all of the southern cooked food is delicious. For dinner they offer a great family style option where you can pick the meat and veggies and serve your self! If you are looking for fancy... this isn't your place. If you are looking for southern comfort food with witty and friendly waitresses that will sit right down and chat with you while taking your order... this is your place! Never any problems here. Food is pretty consistent and I would say it's more similar to what you would get at home. The decor is dated but I come for the food not decor. Others have rated low and it probably deserves closer to three stars. The reason I give it four is that I travel a LOT and appreciate eating at a place where it taste like home cooking. I pulled out my trusty Yelp app and began my search. After finding this place and reading the reviews, we got off at an exit that we would not have otherwise. My general opinion-just stay on the express way. This restaurant was part of a hotel and there were quite a few cars outside and quite a few locals inside. This is a small town greasy diner written all over it. Based on the the reviews I definitely had to get the chicken dinner special. It was unmemorable. The chicken. Not even close to KFC (and that bar is not too high) The corn and green beans, straight out of can. The biscuits, ready made. The mashed potatoes tasted kind of real but were pretty soupy. The coleslaw was the only thing that was good. It must have been a knock-off KFC recipe because that is what it tasted like to me, and that is a good thing to me. My boyfriend had the BBQ and it really was not too bad but pretty wet/mushy as well. Overall, for a mom and pop restaurant at a random exit off the express way. The old hotel off of Bethel road exit on 40 couldn't be better! Preachers couldn't figure out why people were leaving service early but they soon discovered it was for Timberwoods of course! Get there ASAP on Sunday's for lunch that is out of this world with fried chicken, Mashed potatoes and so much more. During the week, try out the specials as well as the menu items. Stopped here while traveling. Staff was friendly on arrival. I ordered a ham plate with mashed potatoes and squash, my husband ordered a BLT, and our friend ordered a chicken salad sandwich. After ordering, it took 30 minutes for our food. The ticket showed what time the order was out in , and it came out 30 minutes later. The place wasn't extremely busy, nothing we ordered should have taken that long, no explanation was offered as to why it took that long or an apology for taking so long. So maybe it's normal at this restaurant to take an extremely long time to get food. My food wasn't piping hot when it finally came either. It wasn't bad. Not really worth the wait though, so we won't be going back. I did give 2 stars because food didn't taste bad and wasn't ice cold when we got it, so could've been worse. read more

I will tolerate a restaurant with poor service but great food. And even one with marginal food and great service. Unfortunately Timberwoods got neither of these right. We went on a Sunday afternoon and our order was taken and salads served promptly. It was all downhill from there. It took nearly 15 minutes to receive our entrees. The beef tips (which were ordered medium) came out as barely reheated leftover shoe leather. They seriously seemed to be leftover. The gravy (not a mushroom in sight) was cold, not tepid or room temperature, but cold. The other sides were barely warm and the potato looked like it had been cooking/sitting all day. The waitress never bothered to ask if everything was okay after we'd received our food. Although there were very few people in the restaurant (understandably so). We could have flagged her over but there was so much wrong we'd need to send it all back and I was pretty hungry. Only family style dinning in town (Sunday Afternoon Only). Real good "Down Home" food, sandwiches,vegetable plates, some sea food, a daily special and rotations of dessert. Now for the atmosphere, it serves an older clientele (mostly retired) But in the evenings go later than the "Early birds" and you can get in 5:00 PM to 6:00PM forget it.
