I have found my next favorite restaurant on Walton Way... Timbuktu Cafe is a real diamond in the rough, a man from Mali and his wife from the Ivory Coast operate this establishment. We were greeted with a smile we noted that it was our first time visiting and the woman at the cashier was soooo patient and friendly, we order the Dibi Lamb and Jerk Chicken all of it was served hot and it was really delicious, be prepared to wait, this is not fast food! The dining area was clean and well maintained with your choice of booth or table. The ambiance was dinner dim but not to dark, I can't say enough on how my wife and enjoy the staff and the food. I look forward to visiting again to try different authentic African foods. read more

A hidden gem in Augusta. I have been living in CA for the last year and get to try different foods daily. I was craving something different while I was home and decided to give them a shot. All of the meats were tender and falls off the bone, the rice was delicious and flavored well. The customer service was spot on and they were very friendly and eager to serve their food you could tell. It does take a "while" to get your food after you order, but they are literally in the kitchen preparing and making it after you order. So don't expect quick, chain food fast service. It's quality food made to order and it is worth the wait. I would highly recommend this place and encourage you to get out and try something new :-) read more

I love this place. I had a Nigerian friend visit in August and he's always looking for African food when he gets out of his little town. Oddly enough I hadn't eaten here before he came. Short story, the food is delicious. He was pleased though he made sure I knew Nigerian jollof rice is better. There wasn't a bad item we ordered. Absolutely delicious. In addition to jollof rice we also had egusi soup. I was introduced to bitter lemon and a malt beverage. The only gripe I had is it takes a while to get your food. We live super close and decided to try something different for take out.... HOLY MOLY this was so delicious!!! we didn't really know what to order and I can't even remember what we got but it was a beef dish and every bit of it tasted like comfort food, home cookin- African style. We were so satisfied and there was plenty of food! This is the best African food spot in Augusta! Everything is on-point but my personal favorite is the dibi lamb with jollof rice! You cannot go wrong with that! Stopped by here the other day and ordered the egusi stew with the cassava fufu. The stew was very hearty albeit a tiny bit oily, but it was definitely as good as any I've had in bigger cities. The thing I like a lot about egusi stew is the nutty flavor from the egusi combined with both seafood and meat- I feel like it would be perfect to have frequently when the weather gets colder. The cassava fufu was like a very sticky/gummy mashed potato that went very well with the stew, and it was also served with some sort of African chili oil that added a nice kick to the meal. One thing I will note is that the waiting time can definitely be long (about 40 min+) so if ordering ahead is an option, I recommend you do so. I also wish the portions were a bit bigger but otherwise no real complaints. I would definitely return in the future to try out the other options and am glad there is a real African food spot in Augusta. read more

Pleasantly surprised. Not much to see from the outside (store front restaurant in a shopping plaza) but once inside it was a different vibe with colorful walls and exotic decor. Very small sign outside so you have to really pay attention or you will miss it but once you get inside it great. Place was clean and well decorated with african carvings and dashiki cloth. The food is made fresh to order so the cashier giving us a heads up the wait time was appreciated. We waited 45 mins for our food and it was great. Everything tasted authentic. Let's get one thing straight right now!!!! There is no way in hell anyone can cook food well from many countries of Africa!!! No way!!! Having said that the food is just ok. Nothing special. Here is another business that could be an amazing place if the owner would focus on a smaller menu and hire/train another cook to cut down the hour and a half wait that customers have to endure. Originally from Mali I happened to be here for the EYBL Nationals. I found by pure hasard this place and it feels like home. As the food is cooked to order, the waiting time might be longer than any restaurant but the wait is worthy. Dishes are really well presented. I order Dibi lamb with alloko (grilled lamb with sweet plantains and it is was so good. Some of my kids took beef maffe ( traditional dish with rice and peanut butter sauce) and they didn't leave a grain of rice. I took as a beverage Ginger juice and my friend took bissap juice(hibiscus juice) both homemade. We planned to come back with some of her teammates later this week. This place is a TRUE west African restaurant. Highly recommended to food lovers who want to discover African food. read more

This place is underrated. Not only is the staff friendly and welcoming but the food? Wow. I have had their food three times now and have not been disappointed. Super flavorful and amazing food. I don't know the name of it but that spicy sauce is superb. Definitely not for the faint of heart but my god does it add a great kick to everything you dip into it! Being Puerto Rican I am VERY fond of ripe plantains so finding some here was great. If you haven't tried any I highly recommend that you do. They'll add a nice mild sweetness to your meal that pairs with any savory dish nicely. Picking a dish to solely recommend is hard because everything has been so great but, if I HAD to pick something, I would ask you try they jerk chicken first to introduce yourself to their cuisine. Absolutely mind blowing place... This restaurant has the potential to be one of the next big spots in Augusta! They just opened and staff is limited, but the awesome service and delicious food is definitely worth the wait. The staff is from Africa and will gladly explain the different items on the menu to you for a better understanding. They are the nicest and most passionately patient of individuals. I ordered the #7 and was asked if I wanted to try it in authentic form with my fingers and water (and so I did), and it was a truly eye opening experience, that I enjoyed. They give you water in a bowl (you can go wash your hands first, please do lol) and then they tell you to pull a piece of the fufu and dip/scoop it into the bowl of soup. Soooo soooo sooo delicious! Now this soup has okra in it and if you don't like or are not accustomed to the okra slime this is not for you, but you're definitely missing out on it. The beef was tender, the chicken seasoned just right, and whatever else goes in it was flavorful and delicious! The tea was a Hibiscus blend and so yummy and satisfying, I would have loved to take a gallon home with me, it was that delicious. I can't emphasize the deliciousness and yumminess of this restaurant enough, y'all please go check this place out, it's worth every bit of the time and the wait for the food and friendly service read more

This place popped up on the suggestion list while I was looking for some lunch. I've only ever had this kind of food during the annual Arts in the Heart festival in downtown Augusta so I knew I had to go and check it out. It's a small place in a strip mall on Walton Way and so new they don't have a permanent sign up yet. We went in and were told we could sit anywhere we liked. They have menus on the table and also on the screen up by the register for takeout orders. The server came to our table and took our order. I only mention that because it might be confusing to determine where you order. I ordered the #7, beef with fufu and sauce and couldn't decide between the okra or palm sauce so she actually made me a small dish of both. I liked them both. The palm has sort of an umami flavor that is slightly reminiscent of fish sauce, but very good. The okra sauce is a little thicker from the okra in it. They also have a little bowl of spicy pepper sauce you can add or dip things into. What I did (and not sure if it's entirely correct) is tore off a piece of the fufu, which was like a warm dough, and used it to scoop the meat and sauce to eat. My husband ordered #4, djolof rice and asked to try the beef and chicken. He raved about the rice and I was fortunate enough to be able to taste it before he ate it all. It's hard to describe because it looks like Spanish rice but the flavor is so deep and complex. It's a drier rice and very fragrant but has so much flavor. It really is the star of the dish. They also had the most incredible plantains. They were perfectly caramelized on the outside and soft and sweet on the inside. read more

The food I tried at Timbuktu Cafe was good and bad. Per the counter workers recommendation, I tried what was called peanut soup. Wow, great flavor and the meat fell right off of the bone. The portion isn't gigantic but it is a thick sauce to pour over rice and was filling. I also tried their purple hibiscus beverage and very much enjoyed the sweet concoction. I've had this dish twice now and it was delicious both times. On the other hand, I found the ginger beverage to be a bit too strong for my personal liking and would recommend sharing it with a few people or mixing it with something else. Lastly, they had something of a sweet grained soupy pudding that I would not recommend, the flavor was fine but if you have a thing for textures it may be hard to enjoy. Possibly another thing to share for the experience. From the exterior, this is just another shop in a strip mall and you'd easily pass right by it. That being said, the inside has vibrant color scheming and the decorations were quite attractive. I've only ordered out so I can't speak to experiences dining in or the noise levels but there appeared to be plenty of space in the large room with private short walled booths. Everything seemed well cared for and clean, so no issues to address there. The food does take a while to prepare, and you will probably have to wait. That being said the folks working there were incredibly pleasant and I will gladly return when the craving hits. Parking should never be an issue as they have a lot right in front of the building. The menu is posted online with prices included, though I didn't see the dessert my friend ordered and you'll have to click on the beverage text to expand the menu. If you're interested in trying something fun but different give Timbuktu Cafe a try. You can bet I'll order the peanut soup and hibiscus beverage again. read more

It was so juicy, tender, and full of delicious flavor... it was eye opening for me to West African cuisine. Everything is well worth the wait. Had my first experience at a West African (Senegal, Ghana, Mali, Ivory Coast) style restaurant, Timbuktu Cafe, in Augusta, GA. All I can say is WOW!!! The meals (yes, we went TWICE and got extra to bring back) were truly DELICIOUS. It is a small Mom & Pop style establishment without fancy pretense but the decor is attractive, the owners are welcoming, and it is very clean. We had the Djollof Rice with Chicken, the Thiebu Djen with Snapper Fish, the Dibbi Lamb, Fufu and the Beef w Okra Sauce. Everything is cooked fresh to order, so be patient- there is a wait time involved (40-60 minutes). Just sit back and relax because it's meant to be a home like experience chatting with friends or family beforehand. You can also call ahead an hour for takeout. Prices are under $20. I was heading to Target for mindless spending, and caught the sign for Timbuktu Cafe out of the corner of my eye. So so so glad I did! It's a gem and a welcome addition to the area in my book. Super friendly people work here and were more than happy to answer questions, make suggestions AND brought a few samples. Love all of this. I was on a pescatarian kick and I was pleased to find quite a few options. I ended up with poisson braise and it was delicious. Succulent, perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked whole fish. I had mine with fried plantains because that's my jam and they definitely hit the spot. I could literally eat them by the pound. All of this was served up with some delectable sauce and a generous portion of salad. One of the sauces had a bit of heat, which I adore. The cucumber salad was a serious plus to cool off my mouth. I love spicy and the burn was totally worth it because it was a flavorful heat, not just fire. I'm a fan. Timbuktu Cafe also has tasty natural drinks; and I loved the ginger drink. Spicy, hint of lemon...so perfect. I've even gone back to pick up a bottle when I was stuffed up and miserable with a cold. Perfect remedy. This place is a delicious delight. read more
