If you're a traveler, and or a Foodie, the name "Time Out" probably rings a bell, and the logo almost certainly looks familiar to you. Those two things certainly had my antennas up. Alas, the Time Out Market is brought to you by the same Time Out Group that publishes all the popular magazines and guidebooks on travel, food, and happenings in major cities. I really find their magazines on NYC informative, and is one of my go-tos when I'm there, because they're so au courant with the theatre and restaurant scene. I particularly like this concept because all the spots here have been selected by the editors of Time Out, and many are opened by top chefs from Lisbon. It isn't filled with your typical pop-up food stalls opened by any all comers who just want to "play chef". This massive food hall has about 30 plus stalls. You can have an entire meal here. Get some appetizers from one place, relax, get an entree or two to share, relax, and definitely get a dessert to share. It's a Foodie's Dine Around Dream. Only problem is that some of the super popular stalls will draw lines that will likely stall the perfect symphonic flow of your dinner. Take the popular Alexandre Silva kiosk, for example. Hubby sat for literally an hour as I went to get our entree of cod! It was definitely an amazing experience, as it was certainly popular with tourists and locals alike. We suspect though, that it leans more heavily towards the tourists, because as Hubby sat and waited for an hour while I stood in line for our entree, he noticed neighboring seats turning over with 3 different parties, all tourists - from England, Japan, and the U.S. It was still fun though, as this place was definitely bustling! The produce market part is fairly small, and we weren't at all impressed with the freshness and quality. It does close at around 2pm, so if you have a desire to take a gander, come earlier, rather than later. Time Out Market is definitely not an experience to miss out on, but we prefer traditional sit-down, order off the menu meals as opposed to standing in long lines for each course. It might be good for a bite at lunch, but on our second visit here, lunch actually seemed busier than dinner. I judge that by how easily it was to grab a seat for two. If you're a late diner, the Market is is open until Midnight. However, I would take some caution, as the Market doesn't seem to be located in the best part of town at night. Taxis are easily available though, just right outside the Market, and we took that back to our hotel after dinner at around 10:30pm. If you can't make it to Lisbon, no worries. The Time Out folks have similar venues planned for NYC, Miami, Chicago and Boston. I'm excited about the one in NYC! The choices (all of them from top quality restaurants) so abundant that it can be overwhelming. A few visits is definitely necessary. Amazing that no matter what time you visit it is busy and can be difficult to find a seat. So no doubt a popular spot for locals also. I've had a few dishes. Octopus Salad (ordered every time I visit) and Fried Hake from Monte Mar. The seafood and vegetable Tempura as well Foie Gras Burger from Marlene Vieira were excellent. This timeout market is enormous omg I love it. I wish I had enough time to try every restaurant. Everything looks delicious, we came here twice and it was for the pasteis de nata, which were amazing. Definitely worth checking out while in Lisbon! It is a fun, festive environment and a great way to try a lot of different local cuisines - as well as American foods like hamburgers. This is not "food court" food, the food stalls are run by local chefs and restauranteurs. The building itself is very cool, it is located the historic Mercado da Ribeira, a traditional market hall built in the 1890s. This was actually recommended to me by a local so even though there are a lot of toursits there, the locals like to go there as well. You definitely need to be in the right frame of mind, this is not where you go if you are looking for a relaxed dining experience but if you want to try a variety of foods and drinks, this is a lot of fun! read more

If you come to Lisbon, you must go here. For the price, this is some of the best food you have and the choices are amazing. I have been to a few Food Halls in the US and this blows those out of the water. It has some of Portugal's greatest food hits. Miguel Castro e Silva Rice dish - I initially came in for the Arroz de Polvo but this was no longer available. I had this rice dice instead. It was very good but the issue is there wasn't many shrimp in the dish. Bacalhau à Brás - This is a dish Portugal is famous for. This is the only place I tried it but it taste delicious. Manteigaria Pasteis de Nata - This is must try! I never had it before in my life and it became one of the best treats I have ever had. It is the perfect morning snack to have with your coffee. This is the food market that other food markets around the world dream of. From traditional Portuguese meals to fresh seafood, and bites from around the world. The market boasts 40 ready-to-eat food booths, several which even include Michelin star chefs. That's the caliber of how wonderful this food is. There's a huge picnic seating area in the middle, so you can buy many different foods from different food stands to make your full meal. I think we tried about four different food stands because we were seriously floored by the options. There were a lot of wine and cocktail booths, so we started with some local wine and started browsing for food. I wish I remembered the food I got, but I remember that I chose a seafood dish, a side dish and also got an amazing dessert at another stand. We also tried a lot of each others' dishes, so it ended up being a big smorgasboard of trying new foods. This market is super upscale and much nicer than I expected. It's very classy, new and high quality. Whatever you do, do NOT miss out in coming here if you're in Lisbon. It's a great way to get a (literal) taste of the culture and makes for the BEST night. Time Out Market is like Quincy market of Boston or the Ferry building market in San Francisco. Some pop-up stores and a huge area with lot of food vendors. It was lively and fun and it was nice trying different food places. We got some great wine and vegetarian tartar from Tartar-ia, amazing ice cream and chocolate torte at Santini's. It is touristy but I was a tourist here and I would recommend going to this market at least once when you are in Lisbon. read more

I didn't have the chance to eat much at Time Out Market, but if you are looking for a place with several eating and drinking options, as well as great shops, this would be it. Along with more noted stalls, like Manteigaria and Henrique Sa Passoa, there are several others to explore. I mostly enjoyed the ginja shop right outside the market. I wanted to try O Prego and am sad I did not have time for it. Time Out is big, with plenty of seating and wi-fi, which is great. I also popped into the farmers market next door (Mercado da Ribeira) to get a feel for that, which seems great if you live in Lisbon. Time Out is in a great location, which makes access easy. I ended my 2017 on a high note. Time Out Lisbon is my ultimate happy place. Curated by Time Out in 2014, this is #2 most visited place in Lisbon. The market hall features 24 restaurants run by the best of the best chefs in Portugal, each restaurant has its own theme. I managed to eat in 8 or so places in two nights but still I wish that I could come back. There are currently only 1 place like this - three places to open in 2018 and 2019 Miami, Chicago and Boston. You know that I'll be going to these places too but no place like this one in Portugal. If you are like me and like seafood, start from the Silva's, there are two, one after another, then move onto the other stalls and get sampling menu. I loved anything with cod and octopus, and I tried different variation of it just to get a feel on different methods of preparing cod. Cod is an Atlantic fish often seen in Norway cuisine. I was really delighted to find that in Portugal, they too served lots of cod dishes. Sadly Alexandre Silva was shutting down early on New Year Eve, but I did have the pleasure of eating in several other stalls where they too served Cod. The burger restaurant was quite amazing too, and so was the pizza stall. So you can get dishes to please everyone here. To do this place properly (yes this is a bit like the Barcelona, Madrid or Malaga food halls like most of the Spanish places would have), you need to figure out how to get a table. Best to find a table, get the seats, then start walking around and order. Don't be getting the food first without seats. Come around 7 to get better seating and don't be afraid of bussing your own table space as not everyone puts their dishes away when done. Get their wine too. At $3 to $4 a glass or $10 a bottle, it's a steal. Don't be like me, show up too late for Silva's Cod. It's really the highlight of the evening. I did get it at Sea Me, also very very good. This trendy food hall off Lisbon's coast offers a wide variety of restaurants and gourmet. From traditional Portuguese fare--seafood, pastries--to selections of global cuisine--ranging from Italian pizzas to American style burgers--this is a great option for groups who may be seeking a variety of different food styles. I stopped by both during lunch hours (12-2) and early dinner (6-7) on both weekends and weekdays, and it was always bustling. It may be difficult to find a place to sit during peak hours, but if you roam around for awhile you're bound to be lucky enough to catch a group as they're just leaving. Seating might be near impossible for larger groups in busy hours, however. I tried a couple different stalls, and I personally loved the pizza the most! They have many types of cuisines and fusion foods, it got pretty crowded and hard to find seats when we went on Sunday afternoon. It's a touristy place as I didn't spot any local there, and I could only find 1-2 option of authentic Portuguese foods, but overall the food quality was very good, they even had cooking lessons in the central court. I came here for my first meal in Lisbon, for one of my last, and a few others in between. This food hall has little shops set up around the perimeter, each run by a top chef or shop from somewhere around Portugal. This means that you can eat some of the best food from around the country in a single, centralized location. Plus you can get dessert, a pastry to take home, or even locally made products as gifts or souvenirs. Multiple people with different tastes? No problem. What is a problem is seating. This place is popular, and you have to wait aggressively to get a table. See someone nearing the end of their meal? There are probably three other groups already eyeing their spot. This place alone was worth our trip to Lisbon. We ended up spending like 3-4 hours here. We ate at Marisqueria Azul while our kiddo napped in the stroller and had razor clams (amazing!), barnacles (first time!!), boiled shrimp and my husband had a crab dish. It was pricey but well worth the experience. My husband tried some wine inside afterwards and I finally got to try a pastel de nata. When busy, it can be a challenge to find a seat at one of the long tables, but the staff always clears the plates and trays quickly, so don't let this stop you from exploring the amazing food options here. I started by ordering the 5-snack tasting menu from Marlene Vieira. For just 17 Euros, we got a tasting of the stuffed mushrooms with quail egg and cured ham, the hamburger slider with foie gras and onions, a chickpea cod salad, sliced octopus with peppers/onions, and mussels with tomato and onions! Of all these various dishes, the tender octopus was my favorite--the bold Mediterranean flavors complemented the distinctive taste of the octopus so well! From another stall specializing in chicken, I ordered a classic Portuguese snack, the empada, a small doughy tart/pie filled with hot shredded chicken. The crust on this pie was so flaky and crispy, and the chicken was so savory and tasty. Finally, we also got a salad with cured Iberian ham, fig, and cheese over greens. The sweetness and earthiness of the figs paired so nicely with the salty flavors of the ham and cheese, and the croutons gave the salad a nice crunch! There were so many delicious-looking things at this market that I wish I simply could have tried more! This is a wonderful spot if your indecisive about what to eat. There are plenty of stalls with a variety to choose from. From pizzas to burgers to pastas, seafood etc. if you are craving it, they will most likely have it. During my visit, I had the seafood skewer from Sea Me, the squid ink pasta from Joao Rodrigues and the Portuguese ceviche from Alexandre Silva. The dish that stood out the most was the squid ink pasta. This dish was cooked so perfectly. The creamy prawn sauce that was tossed in the noodles was just the right amount. I ate this in conjunction with the seafood skewer and it was the best combination! I ended my lunch with the El Camino cocktail at the Time Out bar. The only food we truly enjoyed. Marlene Viera: The women there seem to not want to do business with you. They have had such negative aura and tone. But given the ratings we tried there signature octopus dish for 16€ and avocado crab for 6€. Skip the avocado crab one. It sounds great but is not worth ordering. It tastes like canned cat food. The octopus was good but not outstanding and overpriced. I'd skip Marlene viera. Miguel Castro e Silva: We tried the codfish for 10€. Ok deal but too greasy and oily. The taste was ok. I couldn't really describe the taste. Slightly sweet. Wouldn't order it again. Manteigaria: Same as the ones in town and the one that has amazing reviews on yelp and google. They taste the best when the JUST come out. The custard is too sweet but the crunch outside is amazing. The codfish cakes at any place there are also not recommended. We went here twice during our visit to Lisbon and tried everything from an octopus hotdog, to crispy pork belly, to yummy pastries. There's something here for everyone, even the pickiest of eaters. 3/5 for ambiance. Time Out is completely chaotic. The lines, lack of seating, and random pigeons are stressful. Just be prepared to feel a bit claustrophobic. Additional tip: in the morning, there's also a fresh produce market that sells fruits and veggies. We truly loved this place!! There was 3 of us, so we each tried different places. In Los Angeles, we are generally plant based. But we are vacationing so we decided to eat some meat while in Portugal. My boyfriend had the sirloin burger as pictured from The Fishmonger's nail and it was insanely good. I only took a few bites but I did not feel guilty about it. The bread was perfect and so was the steak. I had the Tuna on a bed of sweet potatoes. It was the best! I loved it so much and the sweet potato was a perfect combo for me. My bf loved the fish but didnt like the sweetness to eat it together.. so depends on your palate... but I thought it was great. They also had a good sashimi spot and the coffee and pastries was perfect. It's a great curation of restaurants no wonder why it is a must visit while in Lisbon and we hope to come back soon to try the other places inside. read more

When in Lisbon, Time Out market is a box most tourists check. While it was exciting to be surrounded by the sites and smells of Portuguese food, it didn't quite live up to expectations. My bf went to the "Croqueteria" and got a meal that came with three croquettes. They were disappointedly dry. I ordered some shrimp and scallop tagliatelle, which was just ok. It came with about 4 shrimp and 3 scallops plus the noodles were kind of soggy. Dishes could be cheaper too. My conclusion? I had heard so much about Lisbon's famous Time-Out Market and so our group of 4 headed there for a late lunch our very first full day in Town, after our walking tour got over in the Praça do Comércio (Commercial Square). It was supposed to be an easy 20 min walk and just as we left the Square, down came a thunderstorm and so we hurriedly found shelter underneath the awning of a building and saw a group of men sheltering under their truck too! So a good 40 mins later than planned, with squelching shoes and damp clothes we finally got to the Time-Out Market and it was buzzing! So many folks and really hard to find a chair, let alone even table space! Finally my brother snagged a spot and then we got one chair and so 2 people guarded our space while another 2 went to get food. The following is a list of food places and the menu items we got: Cozhina Da Felicidade - Octopus and sweet potatoes stew - Cod stew I chose this place cause of two things - a short order line and cause it was seafood. My octopus stew was okay, but my friend Mark's Cod Stew in milk with olive oil salt really blew me away. It was also the dish majority of the folks in line before my were ordering and yeah, I should have listened to the herd in this case. Recommend the cod before the octopus at this place. Bettina Corallo - Chocolate "Brownie" - Chocolate hazelnut OMG! Holy Deliciousness! The chocolate was expensive but worth every bite. The cocoa quality was so fresh and creamy and not at all heavy. My brother deemed it to be the equivalent of crack and yeah, I'd definitely be coming back very frequently if I was a Lisbon local. We tried a couple of other things too, but I can't recall names of the shop or the dishes. My brother got this fish soup that came in a hollowed our bread roll and it was terribly salty - not getting that again. Our friend Megan got a beef burger that had her standing in line for 45 mins and which she demolished in 45 seconds cause it was that good. My brother also got this amazing coffee and chocolate mousse cake at one of the patisserie places. I really like how there is an Info Board (in Portuguese & English) next to each shop, describing what makes them unique. For next time, I discovered I need to try the Pastel de Nata here as they use cinnamon as well as also check out Manteigaria Silva and try their salad with Jambon and Cured queijo da Serra cheese. So this review is written after I'd also find to LX Factory and for me - Time Out wasn't as great as LX. Time out is strictly food, while LX is food and artsy shops. Also the struggle to find seating at Time-Out vs so many empty seating spaces at LX!!! Yeah no contest on that front! Fun places to hang out and pig out! It's basically a food court with great, quality food. Some of the stalls are owned by high end/ well known chefs. I had some thick cuts of salmon sashimi from one stall and ceviche from another. Both were very high quality. The raw fish was melt-in-your-mouth yummy. I loved my visit to Time Out Market! I'm giving 4 stars because, compared to other options, the food here can be quite expensive, but everything I had was wonderful. Here's what I ordered: Scallops with mango chutney from Sea Me Bacalhau à brás and a glass of white wine from Chef Miguel Castro e Silva The Bacalhau à brás is one of Portugal's signature dishes, or so I was told from our tour guide, and it was fantastic. Matchstick potatoes cooked with eggs and salted cod to make a creamy, savory dream. Topped with olives and with a side salad. The scallops were lovely, not the best I've had, but a nice appetizer to start our meal.
