Yes, Time Out Market is definitely touristy, but it's still worth it! We came here 2 times during our 3-day stay in Lisbon. The great thing is that if you're with a group, each person can find something they like. Also, it's casual so if you don't want to spend 2 hours at a sit-down dinner, this is a good option as well. The hours are also super accommodating (open till 2 a.m. on weekends and midnight on week nights!). Yes, it gets crowded and hard to find a seat, but it's worth it. Also, the staff is really good about cleaning up trays, etc. right away. I tried a number of different stalls within Time Out - see details below: - Manteigaria - this was my first pasteis de nata in Portugal. I enjoyed it! The tarts are fresh out of the oven so still warm! Be sure to sprinkle some cinnamon on top! I really can't say whether this place was THE best one I had but it was certainly tasty. - Henrique sa Pessoa - I didn't know it at the time but apparently this chef is a Michelin winner - and it makes sense! Everything I ordered here was delicious. I'm not HUGE on pork but we got the suckling pig and it was more than I could have imagined - crispy skin, excellent flavor, etc. Also had the octopus salad (tender octopus and huge!) Also had the suckling pig sandwich (twist on the bifana sandwich) and it was tasty as well. I don't think you can go wrong at this stall! - Marlene Vieira - Others in my group had the octopus from here and it was so tender! They have a daily special here (e.g. octopus on Monday) for a really reasonable price (I think around 10 euros). - Also tried the pad thai from Asian Lab, mainly because I was craving thai/Asian on the last day. It was good but not anything super special. - Sangria - There is a booth in the middle where they make sangria to order... delish! Most of the stalls also serve beer/wine as well, for a reasonable price. - A Vida Portuguesa - this a store in a few cities in Portugal and they have sort of a mini store in the middle of the food hall. They have a bunch of great higher end/classy gifts such as fancy chocolate bars, cookbooks, soaps, etc. that make for great gifts. I missed this the first time I visited but saw it the 2nd time. Time Out Market is a destination. One of the top two or three tourist attractions in Lisbon, it's a 75,000 square foot Mecca for a melange of different types and styles of Portuguese food, wines, cheese, desserts and other treats. The food looks, smells and taste great. Local musicians entertain. The giant food hall seats close to 800 people, yet it's difficult to find seating so a good strategy is to do a lap and check out what's available,. Decide what you want to eat, get some wine, get your seats, then go back and order while others in your party defend your seats. For those wanting a more serene dining experience, there are bar style dining counters along the outer ring of food court, where one can sit quietly and enjoy similar types of food and wine as the main hall. Every big city should have one of these multi restaurant dining experiences. They should be legislated for in the public interest. This market place, which is near the sea, is attached to an old spectacular fish, vegetable & fruit market. If you arrive by cruise ship it's under 10 minutes taxi ride and if you are fit you'll walk it in under 30 minutes along the sea front. It was big, noisy, vibrant and crammed with happy diners with seats were at a premium. The seating isn't comfortable so get any notion of relaxed dining out of your head and it's canteen style with long wooden tables and chairs, and staff who push bins around clearing food and plates away. We were five hungry diners. We sat next to four young Japanese girls who each managed to turn crimson-faced on about two sips of alcohol. They had ham & cheese tapas and spent as much time photographing the shaved Iberian style black ham & thinly sliced cheese as they did eating it. They also had cubes of quince with the meat & cheese plate, a few dried thin sliced toasted baguette style bread and a scattering of salted peanuts. I thought the peanuts odd with ham and cheese, so a new one on me and it was clear from the finger pointing, fork prodding chatter that they had no idea what the quince was. As a snapshot there's places here selling fillet of beef and other steak, chicken, sardines, Thai food, fresh and cooked oysters, tuna, salmon, pizzas, one place is dedicated to soups, another to chocolate to drink and eat. There are tapas type hams and cheeses, and places specialising in cakes and ice creams and on and on. There's also a few bars and not enough toilet facilities to cope with the huge human traffic. The drive for retail space should never compromise adequate toilet facilities so one star off. I had superb food; after an explore I chose Alexandre Silva restaurant (at one of the corners) for main & dessert. I had a salted cod soup with chick peas, some bread & cherry tomatoes on the side (€5) from the dedicated soup seller then from A Silva I had seared fresh tuna with polenta and a seriously flavour packed ginger dressing (€10) and a crisp toffee coated roast banana in a creamy foam (€4). Everything I had was perfectly cooked and delicious. Among my companions choices were burgers, salted cod and another tuna from different vendors. Almost all the dining is pay up front and get a buzzer to go back when your food is ready. I hope to repeat the experience again and I note from their advertising that Time Out dining is soon to open in Miami, Boston, Prague and a few other places. read more

I had high hopes based on reviews, but was totally unimpressed by the food. There are so many choices, it boggles the mind. However, if you are not a fish lover, you will have limited options here. Prices are also rather high for what equates to Portuguese street food. After being ignored at a sandwich shop while others stepped in front of me, Neapolitan-style, right in front of the vendor's eyes, we picked a quieter place serving local sausage plates. The Chorizo (€10) Plate, coming with one whole chorizo sausage, a side of fries, and a small side salad was very tasty. Unfortunately, the Mixed Local Sausage Plate (€11) was not what I expected. The sausage came sliced and was a mix of chorizo, a sickeningly sweet and mushy chicken and bread sausage, and what I soon realized was an equally mushy and disgusting blood sausage. I ate the chorizo and left the rest, losing my appetite after eating the cooked hemoglobin. Anthony Bordain is probably rolling over in his grave, but blood sausage is not a taste I will ever acquire ... sorry Tony! A great idea, but I found that the choices were rather limited and pretty much what you find at most Portuguese restaurants - Portuguese steak with an egg on top and fish, primarily bacalhau (aka "bacalau" - dried, salted cod cooked in a variety of ways). There are also a couple of overpriced sandwich shops, a single pizzeria, and a croquette shop, but everything else is fish and meat. The giant, adjacent market next door is outstanding with fresh fruits and veggie stands, meat shops, cheese purveyors, and other delightful Portuguese food options. Great spot for a wide variety of authentic Portuguese dishes (and a few American favorites, too). You'll have a myriad of options for the whole family from salads to turkey burgers to more ethnic dishes. Really wish I got to spend more time here! My brother heard that Manteigaria had better pasteis de nata (Portuguese egg custard tarts) than the famous Pasteis de Belem, and the closest location to us was at Time Out Market. We saw Manteigaria right after getting off the metro and walking towards the market. You don't actually have to go inside the market to order, as they have a take-out counter, where you can also see them making the pasteis. Lucky for us, no line at all. We split a pastel just to taste, since we wanted to actually grab some food in the area, and it has such a smooth texture, flaky crust, warm and delicate. Didn't need the cinnamon or powdered sugar at all. We entered the market and I didn't realize it was a food hall! I think I expected to see an actual market, but the majority of the shops and things were closed when we went, so we spent most of our time walking around and checking out the menus of the restaurants and bars. It was packed, as suspected, but they give you these buzzers that go off when your order is ready, so you can find a seat in the meantime and if you're with someone else, they can hold down a spot while you pick up your meal(s). I chose a light meal at Sea Me, which, of course, was a seafood restaurant, because I saw stingray on the menu and I had never had it before. They had a menu with some Portuguese-inspired dishes and some that were internationally-inspired. The Japanese-inspired wafu stingray salad was pretty tasty with the sesame flavors, light in terms of heaviness in the belly, but also light in portion, so I thought it was kind of expensive for what I got, but that seemed to be the case for a lot of the meals at the market in general. Great place to stop and get a variety of food. I went twice for lunch on a recent trip to Lisbon and everyone in my party was able to get what they wanted. Pretty cool food hall with a large variety of food options. I prefer to walk cities and find holes in the wall which this is definitely not. It was packed with tons of people having a great time. You'll pay for the popularity as well, it turned out to be one of our more expensive meals/drinks of the trip. We ha some different risottos that were a little mild on flavor, a great charcuterie board, and a few drinks. Everything was good, but we'd had better meals off the beaten path while visiting. You may actually hear more English here than any other language meaning that it's popular with travelers/tourists. And my favorite the custard tart place situated right near the entrance, the place is always busy selling only tarts and coffee. This market is a bunch of high-quality food vendors under one roof. Such good stuff! I had a delicious cod cake, cod risotto, green salad, seared scallops, wine... It's easy to get carried away trying a bit of everything. There's so many options, how could you not? It can get expensive since these options are not cheap, relatively speaking by Portuguese standards. All the food seems high quality. I wish I had more room in my stomach for all the goodness. My only qualm is that it's kind of a high-stress setting. It's like a bougie mall food court where you pay for something, scrounge for a seat, run back to get it when the buzzer goes off, then come back to find another seat if the one you had gets taken. I agree, you really need to come to Time Out Market if you're visiting Lisbon. It is a unique experience. However, here are some things to know. You will pay close to restaurant prices but will have to fight for a seat in this popular hectic food court atmosphere. If you come during peak hours, you will spend more time trying to find a seat than eating. This is because the visitors outnumber the seats. There are lots of long tables with chairs lined up along them so it's a free for all seating. If you are uncomfortable around crowds, you might be a little stressed. I'm fine with crowds so found the experience fun. My tip advice is to visit the restaurants in the outer loop of the time market. This place is one big open area with kiosks but a lot of people don't know that there is an outer loop on the other side of the kiosks with more restaurants which allow bar stool seating and you can sit and order directly in front of the chef. These places have some incredible seafood. I ended up trying Bacalhau from Alexandre Silva, which was a great dish. The cod was big and it rested on a bed of deliciously cooked spinach. The perfect introduction to Portuguese food and drink, TOM should be the first stop on your visit to Lisbon. Glad we made our way here just ours after our flight arrived on a rainy Sunday in November! Take a lap when you first walk in to get an idea about your options. We especially enjoyed the cod cakes in the NE corner, sardine toast and a cheese plate with pumpkin jam from a place on the north wall, and one of the best examples of pastel de nata on the southern wall near the restrooms. We actually came here twice during our week and also liked a meat and cheese plate from one of the shops on the western wall and wish we had space in our stomachs to have more seafood. The community tables can make it challenging to find a spot to sit during busy times, but great community experience. Neat Super Bock taps in the middle, along with some port and cocktail options, but you can also always get a Super Bock draft at most of the restaurants. Take a moment to walk upstairs to take in a view of the whole space. Bring your appetite and go home happy! read more

We went to 2 different places and got 3 types of risotto (squid ink/seafood/duck), fries, and an avocado crab meat appetizer. The portions were generous and each entree was was under 15 euros. My favorites had to be the seafood risotto with seared cod and the pastel de natas from Manteigaria. If you want to sample a lot of different foods, this is a must-try! Mercado de Ribera from the outside almost blends in with the neighborhood. Inside, high ceilings, large wood tables fill the middle of the mercado. A large number of food stalls sell everything from gourmet hamburgers, pizza, Portuguese food, gelato, and sushi. It's almost overwhelming. We ultimately settled on a Portuguese stall and had beautifully prepared bacalau (cod fish) on chickpea mash, chickpeas, drizzled with olive oil and a sardine salad. Still a little hungry we had a couple slices of pizza, and washed it down with gelato. Prices were reasonable and the environment was very relaxed. Located at a great spot in Lisbon it's the market place where one seems to want to go. Unlike many other market place (especially in Spain) this one actually has both high quality restaurant quality meals but also, on the outer side, they sell fresh uncooked seafood more for locals. I would definitely recommend trying out some of the food from the renowned chefs' stalls, coz when else are you going to get amazing food at such a cheap price?! Alexandre Silva's: The pork belly with bok choy and pea puree was stellar. The pork was so well cooked and went perfectly with the vegetable and the puree. Just skin was crispy and felt hard to cut at times, but totally worth it! Croqueteria: Absolutely loved the goat cheese with caramelized red onion as well as the traditional beef & pork. The chicken one was good too, but not as noteworthy. Principais: Roasted codfish with chickpea puree, spinach and cornbread crumble. My oh my, this was delicious, I think I found a few bones in the fish, but that doesn't really matter when your food is so so good. I don't have the words for this. However, this place have multiple stations for dining, drinking and people watching. It's an international, trendy place where everybody meet for the first time or not... But, every restaurant here was high quality (many of them are well-known restaurants) and moderately priced. Would it be weird to say that Time Out Market may have been my favorite part of our Lisbon trip? Because I quite liked Lisbon and it still stands out in my mind as one of the highlights. Part cafeteria, part high end restaurant, part bar, all amazing. The long and short of it: 1. Variety. The sheer quantity of different food options at TOM may put some people in an indecision coma. The food is served cafeteria style, trays and all. Each stall specializes in some form of cuisine, and there is an absolute ton to choose from. Over a few visits we had croquettes, pizza, tacos, sardines, steak, fries, pho, pad thai and a few other things that I'm sure I'm forgetting. It was all tasty and just listing off all that makes me want to go back. A perfect place if you're hungry but can't quite put your finger on that 1 particular dish you're craving. 2. Seating. The one knock (and kind of a big one) on TOM is the seating system. Like the food, the seating is cafeteria style, so first come first served. The issue with this is that it's very popular, and many large groups are always around. It was common to see 1 person occupying 5-6 seats with coats in them while the rest of their group got their food, and it made it extremely difficult to find a seat (me and my fiancee ended up sharing a stool because we couldn't get a second one). The market was good enough that this wasn't the biggest issue in the world, but on busy days I'm not sure you would ever get to sit down. Just be aware. 3. Booze. Back to good things! Like booze! Many of the food vendors had drink menus at their stalls, the typical wine and beer selections. For a better drink, pick one of the dedicated beer or wine bars at the center of the market, they have a much larger variety at basically the same price. 4. Price.
