While I was in Lisbon, I was determined to try out Time Out Market. Located by the Cais do Sodre and Hop On Off Bus Stop is was conveniently located which made it easy to get to. Inside there are various restaurants to try as well as retail shops. As you can imagine, it was very crowded and somewhat touristy but for me it was not too bad. The selection of food was so vast, I looked up the food vendors online. Upon my arrival, I decided to try Henrique Sa Pessoa's restaurant and order the Prego de porco preto alentejano. While I did not enjoy my sandwich (did not even finish it) the house chips were great. Somewhat disappointing. But, I honestly think I just ordered the wrong thing because the other dishes I saw looked great. Regardless, I do not regret going and would go again for the experience. Pros: Selection of food, atmosphere Cons: Crowded, hard to get a table Bonus: If you go upstairs you will can enjoy a great view of the entire market. Time Out Market was very organized, clean, and modern. There's a section for fresh produce as a nod to the Mercado Ribeira, but the main attraction is the large square with restaurants and food stalls along the perimeter, and several smaller stores and communal eating tables in the center court. It's actually a bit overwhelming and a map might be helpful if one doesn't exist. I also thought the food was rather overpriced compared to the rest of Lisbon. But I appreciated the aesthetics of the overall interior design (every stall had a sign in the same color scheme), and it was nice to have a variety of places for food and drink in a fun atmosphere. We visited Manteigaria for pasteis de nata, the Conserveira de Lisboa for canned fish, A Vida Portuguesa to look at the soaps, and the Alexandre Silva kitchen for the pork belly. It was great to be able to cross a couple of places off our list in one spot. That said, it was more than 10 euros for what I consider a deconstructed split pea and ham soup. Delicious, but I could have gotten a larger portion of an equally delicious meal elsewhere. A decent one stop shop for first timers, but I wouldn't return unless it was for a specific item at the market. read more

This place is amazing. If you are into seafood, then you could come here for several days straight and not be disappointed. It consists of large communal tables (both high top and regular) We came during the World Cup and the place had large screens all about to watch games. It was always packed so I would come here early (6ish) to get decent seats and enjoy your meal. Assign someone to get the food while most of your party sits down (or be prepared to lose your seats) The 2 times I went, I ate at the following places (also ate at the solo sushi joint which was nothing great so don't waste your time there). However, I think for touristy reasons, the price here is definitely higher than normal with smaller portions. Came here wanting to find good seafood and only bought a seafood soup in the end. I can't say enough great things about Time Out. I haven't even made it to the market part yet but I'm hooked!! This is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. It's a huge market that has lots of places to eat. I've gone to two different places so far and the first time I had pork cheeks with mashed potato and the send time I had a meet sandwich with egg. Easily one of my favorite places in Lisbon, Time Out Market is full of energy, culture, and just plain great food. I was in town for only four nights but couldn't resist coming here a second time after our first great experience. Residing close to the Tagus waterfront right in downtown, Time Out Market is host to so many food and drink vendors it will have your head spinning. My first time there I probably spent 20 minutes walking around the courtyard browsing my options, with each storefront looking more appetizing than the last. They've got pad thai, ramen, seafood, pasta, steaks, hamburgers, custard treats, gelato, a beer bar, and the most amazing sangria you will ever have in your life at Cinco located in the center of the courtyard. Even better than the food is just the incredible atmosphere. The place is packed with locals and tourists both, and it makes finding a table very difficult (easily the biggest complaint that can be made about this otherwise fantastic spot). However, the people you will meet and the vibrant shops make this place a new experience every time. The first time I was here I ended up chatting with a group of girls from Liverpool on vacation - they were the ones who brought me onto the sangria. The next night, it was a stag party from Ireland that came by our table, and we became instant friends (with plans for a sitcom, stay tuned)! For people watching, people meeting, people loving, I'd say it's hard to find a better spot in Lisbon. I can't say it strongly enough, please don't pass this place up! read more

This place has something for everybody. Be it for meals, snacks (Petiscos), desserts or just some drinks. It's all packed in a nicely built food hall only a few years ago by the Time Out magazine. Food-wise there's lots of choices. Many offer Petiscos and Seafood, but there's also Meat, Pizza, Burgers etc. We came around 1pm and the place was - naturally - packed. But you still will manage to get some seats without waiting too long. If you're a big group though you should avoid peak hours. There's a lot of good food around, but also some mediocre choices. Prices vary very much, so be sure to check out all stalls before. Some stalls also offer some limited bar-like seats directly at their stall. Some bigger sit-down restaurants are to be found in the back on the very left (coming from the main entrance). The first time we came here we ordered some mussels and fried Calamari from the "Monte Mar" stall and Suckling Pig with Sweet Potatoe Puree from the "HENRIQUE SÁ PESSOA" stall. The mussels were ok, nothing groundbreaking but fresh enough. The Calamari were a big let-down. Lukewarm and not crispy at all. The Calamari itself were fine and tender, but I don't know what dough they used....tasted not great at all. So the Monte Mar stall was a bit of a mixed bag. A lot better was the Suckling Pig. Crispy, crunchy and tender meat. Lots of good flavours! Nice pairing with the Puree. A really good choice. We also got some wine of one of the drinks stalls in the middle. A bit pricey for a place like this I gotta say. We came back the next two days for the "Marisqueria Azul" Restaurant in the back. Absolutely fantastic place! But you can read more of that in my review about said place. All in all a fun upscale Food Court. A bit hit'n'miss, but surely packed with fun and atmosphere. I was extremely hyped to try TOM's offerings, but our experience was nothing to rave about. I had an utter blast at Copenhagen's street food setup - so maybe it was a case of expectation v. reality mismatch. Definitely worth a gander when you're in Lisbon and a great option if you're travelling with a group of very dissimilar tastes, but obviously not the best spot for an intimate supper. The TOM is a large, industrial food hall stocked with every kind of foodstuff you could imagine. There's a quieter concourse devoted to seafood (with bar seating at each designated stall) and a large atrium with dozens of vendors and free-for-all communal seating. A dancefloor was setup in the central part of the market. It was absolutely popping on the Wednesday night we visited. Grabbing some space here is definitely one of the biggest drawbacks; at peak hours you have to be downright predatory about swooping in on free seats. Be prepared to wait if you've got a large group in tow. The seating is also elbow-to-elbow with neighbouring strangers/new friends, so be prepared to share your space. We sat right up next to a couple on a date and, try as we may to give them their space, heard every word of their dinner. As always, being a food hall, it can get quite loud between the hundreds of patrons (and chefs!) so just a FYI to the hearing impaired. My friend and I opted to try some of the sushi and ceviche from one of the seafood stalls; after our lifechanging experience at a Lisbon ceviche joint, we were eager for more sour-and-savoury fish. In the end, our food was 'aight - nothing bad, but nothing to write home about. We did have close to a 30 min wait for our food, which felt rather tedious given the turnaround we saw at other stalls. My poke bowl was amply-sized, but a little thin on the mixings. Price point was somewhat high for being a seat-yourself food hall. I was also extremely curious about trying the bolo humido (moist cake) at one of the Portuguese fusion stalls. It consisted of salted caramel foam, dense brownies, and several dabs of lime jelly. A very interesting combination, and ran only 3 Euros. I enjoyed this much more than my poke bowl... given that there's over two dozen vendors, it's kind of difficult to tell what will be a miss and what will be a slam dunk. If I'm back, I think I would opt to sample a bunch of tapas-esque plates instead of going in on one large dish. Definitely a lively and tasty hotspot, so would be totally willing to give it another try (or more)! read more

Anytime I travel I love coming to the food markets because they always have the best food! No exception on this trip! The most difficult part was deciding what I wanted to eat. But they had it all! Tons of oysters, crab, Bacalhau, you name it! They have a beer hall type seating in the center of the market. Long tables that reminded me of Oktoberfest in Munich. Every table was filled with groups of friends sharing amazing bottles of Portuguese wine. They have a fruit and vegetable market in the back after you pass through the chaos of the restaurants. The whole venue smells of amazingly fried and fresh food items. Everything looks to be of great quality. Found this spot courtesy of Yelp! It was my first night in Lisbon ALL ALONE as my sister wasn't flying in until the next day. I was nervous being out by myself but I was determined to not hole up in my AirBnB alone. I turned to Yelp to help me find a place for dinner and lo, and behold... this spot popped up. I knew I'd run into some friendly tourists/expats/etc First impressions: This place is HUGE! It takes up a full warehouse sized building. It's brightly lit and spacious with plenty of seating. It's a bit chaotic at first being that there's so many vendors and the open seating area is first come, first serve and isn't designated according to which vendors are nearest by the table. It was a wonderful hodgepodge of different foods and a great mix of locals and tourists enjoying an evening out... I felt right at home. The vibe is hip, cool, fun with lots of people mixing and mingling. By lucky chance, I ran into a friend I knew back when I lived in California (I now reside in NYC) and she joined me for dinner. Food: I had the cod at Alexandre De Silva. It was good but the fish had waaayyyy too many bones and was a chore to eat. The skin was crisp, the fish was flaky tender... a bit over salted... but otherwise good. I'd have rather had a deboned filet though... easier to eat and less of a mess. My friend had the Bacalau (also from De Silva). I usually like Bacalau prepared the Caribbean way (a la my friend's mom who is Indian-Guyanese and prepares it special when we come over for dinner)... but this stuff was waaaay too salty and though it was a cut of fish (I think cut is called a supreme or a torn cut) it still had a LOT of bones in it. I would not recommend this dish. I also had the sangria from O Bar de Odete... it was DELICIOUS. I had two that night at dinner and again when I brought my sister back to visit after she landed. This place also has a Santini's Gelato spot (they have several of them throughout the city) which was perfect for dessert. All in all, I would highly recommend! read more

SO fun! Time Out Market is a great place to check out in Lisbon. It's right off the bike path so we stopped for Natas and drinks as part of our bike tour with Cycling Lisbon. Great hall with an almost overwhelming amount of options. I'd definitely recommend getting seafood when you're here. My favourite was the cod from Alexandre Silva, if you're looking for non-seafood try the suckling pig from Miguel Castro e Silva. Here is everything I've tried: Alexandre Silva Tried the cod with roasted potatoes and greens. The fish was tender, the sautéed greens were well seasoned, and the potatoes were cooked just right. Watch out for the bones in the fish. I would highly recommend this dish! Sea Me I got the scallops from here and while they tasted great I felt like they were overpriced for 3 small pieces. My friend got the octopus rice which was almost like a gumbo over rice. Also tasty but probably wouldn't be something I'd go for here. Miguel Castro e Silva My friend got the 24 hour suckling pig, which tasted incredible. The meat was incredibly tender and the sides complemented the meat really. Only in Lisbon for a couple to a few days? Some say it's touristy, but I say it's Theeee Place to Beee. Time Out brings food halls to another level. It's open late (which is convenient), the website says 12, but that's when they lock the doors and kick you out. No. Ha The vendors though start to shut door between 11 and 11:30, so don't miss the cutoff time. It can be overwhelming, but make sure to walk around to all the counters before making a decision. I find it a great preview of what some of Lisbons' best chefs have to offer. Why try and hit ALL the pricey chef ran restaurants, when you can literally enjoy something quicker and easier on the wallet, but not comprising in taste. After your order is taken, you are given a pager to alert you when your food is ready. There was plenty of seating midweek late night, but I have read that's not always the case, so maybe have a SS (seat saver) search out a good spot. The wine is also inexpensive compared to the US, so that's a pleasant plus. TIP: Google best dishes and maybe there's something you're leaning towards, and you'll at least have an idea of what you'd want so you can be most efficient when you get there. If you're a seafood lover, then you've literally landed on planet Fish. :) I chose Alex Silva's spot and enjoyed a Portuguese cheese board with various homemade jams. We tried the black risotto with scallops and wakame and also a seared local Lisboa fish with the tastiest corn porridge, tomato and cilantro. My tastebuds were tantalized! At first, I was totally unimpressed with the Time Out Market because I expected it to be more like the food markets in Madrid/Barcelona with the food on display. Stopped by for lunch. Many food stalls to choose from but I tried Alexandre Silva's cod with roasted potatoes (bacalhau "a lagareiro") for €13.5. Dish was extremely worth the value - cod was tender but watch out for the fishbones! How good is a place if I return to the same place for dinner the same day? For dinner, I tried the seabass tartare at tartar-ia. It immediately caught my eye because I've never seen seabass tartare before! The fish was tasty and fresh - I preferred the grape sauce over the beet sauce. Lastly, I tried the Portuguese steak topped with an egg from one of the popular shops but fell flat. The cashier that was taking my order didn't ask how I wanted my meat cooked. It was only when I got my receipt that I realized she was supposed to ask me for the doneness of the steak - overcooked for me and really salty. Definitely left the Time Out Market on a lower note. The Time Out Market was recommended to me by a friend who had recently visited Lisbon. She said her and her husband kept going back there throughout their trip, and I understand why! When my friend and I arrived in Lisbon for the day (the next day we were boarding a ship to leave), the weather was terrible, we had just flown for 14+ hours AND it was Thanksgiving. After checking into our hotel, we ended up taking an Uber straight to Time Out Market. It was the perfect place to go on a rainy day, because you could wander around and get different kinds of foods/drinks/treats without being outside. It also allowed us to not have to make a decision in advance about what kind of food we wanted (we were exhausted and probably couldn't have agreed on something). We ended up both getting Pad Thai at the asian booth and it was delicious and fresh. We obviously got some sangria at the center bar as well. The communal seating was kind of fun, and even though it was packed, we didn't have a problem finding a seat. We ended our visit here with a Portuguese Egg Custard tart from the bakery at the front.
